Drafted by the White Sox out of the University of Hawaii in the 11th round in 2011, Walters came into the Astros organization as a part of the July 2012 trade with Chicago for Brett Myers. He made 13 starts for the White Sox in their low A affiliate with good success, compiling a 2.88 ERA and a 1.097 WHIP. He struggled somewhat in making the transition to High A, first for the White Sox and then for the Astros. In his final eight starts of the regular season for Lancaster, he was 3-3 with a 7.62 ERA and a 1.641 WHIP. In the post-season, Walters was 1-0 in two starts with a 2.70 ERA and a 1.600 WHIP.
