Spring Training Update

When the Astros took a 4-0 lead in the first with a lot of help from Nationals' errors and timely two-out hitting, it looked like it might be a particularly good day for the Astros. And although the hitters did have a good day, the pitcher's didn't. Only Erik Bedard and Chia-Len Lo tossed scoreless frames. Jose Altuve had a particularly good day at the plate going 3-for-5 with a double while Justin Maxwell and Brandon Laird contributed a triple and home run, respectively.

I may be in the minority, but I'm not particularly concerned about Jordan Lyles and Dallas Keuchel, each of whom gave up three earned runs in Wednesday's loss. It's Spring Training. When all is said and done, none of the losses (or wins) count for anything. It's a time to work on things and make adjustments. If neither pitcher makes the opening day rotation, it is not the end of the world. They are both still young, they both still have options and they will only be a phone call away at AAA.
