Astros Minor League Recaps

Sunday's Games

Oklahoma City over Memphis 3-2
Wade LeBlanc got the start and the win on the road in Memphis, allowing two runs on six hits with seven strikeouts. Jason Stoffel pitched a perfect eighth, striking out two. Josh Zeid got the save despite allowing a single and two walks as he struck out the side in the ninth. The RedHawks didn't get on the board until a fifth inning solo home run from Jose Martinez put them there. Che-Hsuan Lin then scored in the sixth on a fielding error and in the eighth on a sac bunt and throwing error. Aside from the Martinez home run, the only hits were singles from George Springer (SB) and Lin.

Frisco over Corpus Christi 11-10
Looks like a close game, right? Well, it didn't start out that way as Frisco pounced on Matt Heidenreich and Carlos Quevedo to the tune of 10 runs in the first two innings. Andrew Robinson provided three innings of scoreless relief before giving way to Pat Urckfitz who gave up one run on a solo homer in his two innings. Chia-Jen Lo and Jorge de Leon each provided a scoreless frame. The Hooks scored one in the fourth on an Erik Castro home run, but were trailing 11-1 going into the bottom of the sixth. Three doubles, two singles, a triple and a walk later, the Hooks had scored six runs. They continued to chip away at the Frisco lead with solo homers from Max Stassi and Kike Hernandez in the next two frames and an RBI single from Stassi in the ninth to bring the Hooks within one. It was definitely a roller coaster of a game, but the Hooks ultimately fell just short. There were too many good performances to recap them all so take a gander at the boxscore.

Bakersfield over Lancaster 10-7
This was another rough start for a pitching staff as Kyle Hallock and Cameron Lamb combined to allow ten runs (nine earned) on 14 hits over four innings. Mike Hauschild, after a very rough indoctrination into the California League his last time out, righted the ship and provided four scoreless innings, allowing only three singles and a walk while striking out four. The JetHawks put up four runs in the third on a two-run M.P. Cokinos double and a two-run Tyler Heineman (3x5 2R) home run, added one in the eighth on a Joe Sclafani (2x5 R) RBI single, and the final two on a Matt Duffy (2x4) two-run single in the ninth. Nolan Fontana was two-for-five and scored a run, and Delino DeShields swiped his 35th bag of the season (and his 15th so far in July).

Lake County over Quad Cities 7-3
Joe Bircher, in his first appearance since completing his rehab, got touched for six runs on nine hits and three walks. He struck out four. Jamaine Cotton then provided two scoreless innings before giving way to Gera Sanchez who allowed one run in his two innings of work. Luis Alvarez was two-for-four with a double and Bobby Borchering doubled as well.

Tri-City over Hudson Valley 9-3
Evan Grills gave up two runs (one earned) on nine hits and struck out three in his five innings. Kevin Comer (1.1IP 4H 1SO) gave up the final Hudson Valley run before giving way to scoreless relief from Andrew Walter and Charles Basford. The 'Cats hit the run column with solo home runs from Mike Martinez and Ernesto Genoves (2x3 BB 2R) in the fourth, added two more in the fifth on a Tony Kemp RBI single, and then put an exclamation point on the game with a five-run seventh, featuring a bases clearing double from Ronnie Mitchell (3x4).

Greeneville over Johnson City 7-4
Starter Chris Lee allowed three runs (one earned) on three singles and two walks and didn't make it out of the first inning, despite striking out two. He was followed by four and a third scoreless innings from Ryan Connolly (3H 1BB 4SO), two and two-thirds innings from Krishawn Holley (4H 1R 4SO) and Gonzalo Sanudo (1.1IP 1SO) brought up the rear for his fifth save. After solo home runs from Chase McDonald in the second and Jack Mayfield (2x3 BB) in the fifth, Greeneville trailed 3-2 going into the top of the seventh. With two outs in the frame, the Astros put up five as they walked four, and hit three singles (including RBI singles from Tyler White and McDonald) and one double, a Juan Santana (2x4) two-RBI double. Greeneville has now won 10 in a row.

DSL AL All-Stars over DSL NL All-Stars 3-1
Two Astros were picked for the All-Star squad, RHP Angel Heredia and 1B Hector Roa. Heredia came in for the bottom of the ninth and retired the only two batters he faced, one on a swinging strike out and one on a ground out. Roa only had one at bat and flew out to right field.

Player of the Day: Max Stassi is being ridiculous (and I mean that in a good way). Not only was he three-for-five with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored in Sunday's game, he has hit home runs in five straight games. That is ridiculous.

Pitcher of the Day: Although the JetHawks didn't win, Mike Hauschild had a very nice bounce back performance to give his team a chance.
