He signed with the Rockies as a free agent in November shortly after he did this.

RHP Philip Humber (31)
Originally drafted by the Mets in the first round in 2004, Humber was claimed by the Astros off waivers from the White Sox in November 2012. In 17 appearances (seven starts) with the Astros in 2013, Humber went 0-8 with a 7.90 ERA and a 1.738 WHIP, a far cry from the perfect game he threw for the White Sox on April 21, 2012. As manager of the Houston Astros for parts of 2007 and 2009 and all of 2008, he compiled a 170-170 record. Of all the things I could remember Cooper for, I actually most remember him for his freakishly large hands.

Happy Birthday - 12/19

Happy Birthday to ~

OF Brandon Meredith (24)
Drafted out of San Diego State in the sixth round in 2011, Meredith spent his third professional season at Lancaster in 2013. In 105 games, he hit .279/.399/.507 with 25 doubles, five triples, 16 home runs and 68 RBI. Meredith showed the biggest improvement from the prior season in OBP, walking 64 times and having the sixth highest OBP for Astros minor leaguers appearing in at least 100 games.

Tom Lawless (57)
In his fifth season working in the Astros minor league system, Lawless served as one of the Astros Development Specialists for infield development and was assigned to the Oklahoma City RedHawks team in 2013. Lawless is still remembered by many for his three-run home run for the Cardinals in Game 4 of the World Series in 1987 and his subsequent bat flip seen here 48 seconds in.

Former Astros with birthdays today ~

OF Walt "No Neck" Williams (70)
Where have all the good nicknames gone? No Neck signed with Houston as an amateur free agent prior to the 1963 season. In 10 games for the Colt .45's in 1964, Williams went hitless in nine at-bats. He went on to play several more seasons with the White Sox, Indians and Yankees with a .270/.310/.365 career batting line.

RHP Joe Slusarski (47)
Originally drafted by Oakland in the second round in 1988, Slusarski came to Houston as a free agent in May 1998. In 65 games pitched for the Astros in 1999, 2000 and 2001, he had a 4.57 ERA and a 1.379 WHIP.

Astros Roster Moves/Transactions

The Astros pulled a couple of moves yesterday that are far from earth-shattering. First off, RHP Collin McHugh was claimed off waivers from Colorado. The 26-year old has had very limited major league experience, appearing in 15 games for the Mets and the Rockies in 2012 and 2013 and putting up an 0-8 record with a 8.94 ERA and a 1.796 WHIP. In six seasons in the minors, he is 37-28 with a 3.34 ERA and a 1.264 WHIP. According to Alyson Footer's story, McHugh will be considered for a spot in the starting rotation.

The second move of the day was the trade of IF Ryan Jackson to San Diego for 1B/LF Jesus Guzman. The 29-year old right-handed hitter will be considered for a platoon situation with lefty Brett Wallace at first base or, according to Footer's story on the trade, will be given the opportunity to win the job outright in Spring Training. In three seasons for the Padres, Guzman hit .259/.326/.422. Jackson had been claimed by Houston off waivers from the Cardinals less than a month ago. It is my sincere hope that he didn't load up on Astros gear for his family for Christmas.

The Astros 40-man roster currently stands at 40.

Results for Tuesday, December 17

LIGA VENEZUELA BEISBOL PROFESIONAL

Margarita 8, Magallanes 2

The Islanders blew this game wide open by scoring 6 in the top of the 8th. Eric Berger walked more batters than he struck out, but he offset that by allowing only 2 hits and inducing 11 groundball outs. Only allowing 1 run really helps, as well.

LIGA MEXICANA DEL PACIFICO

Hermosillo 3, Guasave 1

Happy Birthday to ~

1B/LF/DH Chris Carter (27)
Originally drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 15th round in 2005, Carter came to the Astros, along with Brad Peacock and Max Stassi, in the February 2013 trade that sent Jed Lowrie and Fernando Rodriguez to Oakland. In 148 games for Houston in 2013, Carter hit .223/.320/.451 with 24 doubles, two triples and a team-leading 29 home runs and 82 RBI. He also had the ignominious distinction of striking out 212 times, landing third on the all-time season record list.

LHP Rudy Owens (26)
Originally drafted by the Pirates in the 28th round in 2006, Owens came to Houston in the 2012 trade that sent Wandy Rodriguez to Pittsburgh. Owens had surgery for a stress fracture in his foot and missed most of the 2013 season, making only four appearances with Oklahoma City in April. In the Dominican winter league, Owens went 3-2 with a 2.68 ERA and a 0.986 WHIP in 10 starts. He held batters to a .191 batting average.

RHP Edison Frias (23)
Frias was signed as a non-drafted free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 2011. Frias started and ended his 2013 season with the Tri-City team, but spent the majority of the season with the Rookie League Greeneville team. In a combined 12 appearances (10 starts) between the two venues, he was 4-3 with a 3.28 ERA and a 1.214 WHIP.

Former Astros with birthdays today ~

Originally drafted from the Angels in the minor league draft in 1961, White played in 100 games for the 1963 and 1964 Colt .45's and the 1965 Astros, hitting .264/.311/.321.

RHP Jim Clancy (58)
A fourth round pick by the Rangers in 1974, Clancy signed with Houston as a free agent in December 1988. In 96 games (36 starts) for Houston from 1989 to 1991, he had a 9-25 record with a 5.03 ERA and a 1.478 WHIP. His best years were for the Toronto Blue Jays for whom he pitched for 12 seasons and won his one All-Star nod in 1982.

RHP Willie Blair (48)
Drafted by the Blue Jays in the 11th round in 1986, Blair came to Houston in a December 1991 trade with the Indians. In 29 games (eight starts) pitched for the Astros in 1992, he was 5-7 with a 4.00 ERA and a 1.258 WHIP. Most recently, he was the bullpen coach for the San Diego Padres in 2013.

LIGA PARALELA (VENEZUELAN MINOR LEAGUE)

Results unknown

AUSTRALIAN BASEBALL LEAGUE

Sydney 2, Adelaide 1

Adelaide, despite being held to 1 hit, got a run in the 9th thanks to 2 groundouts. That one hit was a double from Josh Cakebread, who scored the run.

SS Joe Sclafani: 0-4, K

And there you have it (for now). There was only 1 game in Venezuela (one box score is not available), while Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico had a day off.

Astros Winter League Cumulative Stats

Due to problems with MLB.com's winter league page (currently only showing stats through 12/13), posting of the Astros cumulative winter stats will be delayed.

Astros Roster Moves/Transactions

It was announced yesterday that the Astros signed former Astro RHP Matt Albers to a one-year contract with a club option for 2015. Albers was drafted by Houston in the 23rd round in 2001 and played on the big league club in 2006 and 2007 before he was included in the trade with Baltimore that brought Miguel Tejada to Houston. Since then, Albers has also pitched for Boston, Arizona and most recently Cleveland in 2013. For the Indians, he was 3-1 with a 3.14 ERA and a 1.270 WHIP in 57 appearances. Much like recent team addition Chad Qualls, Albers is mainly a groundball pitcher, boasting a 2.65 GO/AO ratio in 2013 and allowing only two home runs in 63 innings pitched.

This latest addition brings the Astros 40-man roster to 39. I have updated my ongoing list of all of the offseason transactions to reflect this most recent addition.

Happy Birthday - 12/17

No future Astros, but one former Astro celebrates a birthday today ~

LHP Fernando Abad (28)
Abad was signed by the Astros as a NDFA out of the Dominican Republic in 2002. In 88 games for Houston from 2010 to 2012, he compiled a 1-11 record with a 5.10 ERA and a 1.559 WHIP. Abad signed as a free agent with the Nationals in November 2012 where he played until his recent trade to Oakland.

Caracas might have scored first, but it was all Tiburones in this one, as they put up a baker's dozen. All 13 of those runs were unanswered.

C Marlon Avea: 1-3, 2 R, BB

Bravos 13, Tampa Bay 2

Bravos scored the first 13 runs of the game as they absolutely mauled the Rays' Venezuelan contingent.

Bravos
RF Carlos Perdomo: 3-6, 2 R; This is the first time I've ever seen a box score that has him as a starting outfielder. Has this happened before? According to his Baseball-Reference page, Perdomo has made 1 appearance in right field; that occurred in 2009, when he was playing for the VSL Phillies.

11/14 Games

Bravos 11, Detroit 10

Perdomo also saw time in the outfield in this game; he started the game at 2nd, then shifted over to LF later on. As for the game, Bravos outlasted the Tigers in a shootout.

2B/LF Carlos Perdomo: 0-4, RBI, R, BB

Happy Birthday to ~

OF Bryan de la Cruz (17)
De la Cruz was a recent signing out of the Dominican Republic, having only signed in October 2013. Here is a brief look at de la Cruz from Baseball America.

Three former Astros celebrate today ~

A second round pick by the Astros in 1987, Hennis only got a cup of coffee in the major leagues, but he did it up right. He only got to pitch in three games (nine and two-thirds innings) in 1990, but he managed to keep his ERA perfect at 0.00 with a WHIP of 0.414.  Nice. Ken Hoffman of the Houston Chronicle talked to Hennis last year about his short but stellar career.

Originally drafted by the Reds in the third round in 1984, Jones came to Houston as a free agent in December 1991 and played in 54 games for the Astros in 1992, hitting .190/.271/.302.

OF Charles Gipson (41)
Drafted by Seattle in the 63rd round (no, that's not a typo) in 1991, Gipson signed with Houston as a free agent in January 2005. In 11 at-bats in 19 games, he hit .182/.250/.273. Frequently used as a pinch runner and a defensive replacement, Gipson is one of only a handful of non-pitchers with fewer career plate appearances (366) than games played (373).
