Astros Fall and Winter League Recaps

Results for October 28-30, 2016

How did Astros players in Arizona and Latin America fare over the weekend? Well, I have the answers.

ARIZONA FALL LEAGUE

The Glendale Desert Dogs dropped Friday's contest against Salt River by a score of 4-1, but they got the split with a 6-3 victory on Saturday.

On Friday, Ramon Laureano got the start in right field and went 1-4 out of the leadoff spot. Garrett Stubbs was behind the plate and finished 0-4 out of the #2 spot. David Paulino allowed a hit in a scoreless 6th inning.

Jason Martin started in left field on Saturday, and his one hit was a double. He also walked twice and scored three runs in the game. Laureano, who was in right field again, hit a sacrifice fly that turned into a double play in the 3rd inning and ripped a two-run single in the 7th inning.  Jacob Dorris allowed two hits in the 8th and struck out the side.

LIDOM

Andrew Aplin appeared for Licey on Friday and Saturday, going 1-7 with a couple of walks in the two games.

Mike Hauschild got the start for Escogido on Friday and allowed two runs on six hits, walked one, and struck out five in four innings of work.

Jordan Jankowski struck out one in a 1-2-3 6th inning on Friday for Gigantes, but he was tagged with the loss on Sunday after allowing three runs (two earned, one inherited runner charged to him) on two hits and walking one while failing to record an out in the top of the 9th against Toros.

Reymin Guduan appeared for Gigantes on Saturday against Escogido, and he got the second out of the fifth inning, allowing one hit in his outing.

LIGA MEXICANA DEL PACIFICO

Leo Heras finished 2-5 with a solo home run (2) and scored three runs on Friday and followed that up with another 2-5 performance with a stolen base (2) on Saturday. He did go 0-3 on Sunday, but he still turned in a solid weekend at the plate.

LIGA DE BEISBOL PROFESIONAL ROBERTO CLEMENTE

Santurce defeated Carolina 7-4 on Saturday. Evan Grills got the start for the Crabbers (that's the rough English translation for cangrejero) and got the win, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and striking out three in five innings. ROSTER MOVES/TRANSACTIONS

The only move I've seen over the last week was the assignment of 16-year old Venezuelan SS Sean Mendoza to the DSL Astros. Mendoza was signed in July at the start of the International signing period and will turn 17 on June 2nd of next year.

A PERSONAL NOTE

My work life over the past two years has been a roller coaster of epic proportions with some ups, but also some huge (yuge?) free falls as well. The last couple of months have been particularly taxing and exhausting. And the last couple of weeks in which I had one co-worker (deservedly) fired and his promoted replacement quit resulted in my getting dumped on from every direction and has left my head spinning. As much as I would like to put out a 2017 Houston Farm System Handbook, it simply isn't in the cards for me this year. The idea of writing it all up completely exhausts me at this point.

However, the good news is that I have already completed a ton of the research that I have done each of the last two years in preparation for writing the book and I will continue to pull that all together and share a lot of it with my readers at some point this winter. The main thing I need right now is a little breathing room. I'll still be writing, but it will be when I have the time and the energy to do so. I don't want to burn myself out because I love writing about the minor leagues and I don't want it to become something I have to do rather than something I want to do.

So I am asking my faithful, brilliant and extremely sexy readers to bear with me over the next few weeks as my output may be somewhat sporadic. Hopefully, I will be refreshed and rejuvenated in time for the 2017 season. Keep coming back for weekly farm reports, Dustin's winter league recaps and an occasional interview while I get some sleep and catch my breath.

Peace!
Jayne
