WTH 25-Man Roster - Catcher

As posted over the weekend, 3B Jonathan Meyer became the 15th player to be named to the WTH Roster.  Also receiving votes were Matt Duffy, Mike Kvasnicka, David Flores, Kyle Redinger and Fredwin Campusano.  For more on the WTH 25-Man Roster, go here.

Next, let's pick our second catcher.  Chris Wallace was overwhelmingly elected as our first catcher some weeks ago.  We are lucky in that the Astros have a number of minor league catchers who seem to be able to hit, a trait that has been sorely lacking in recent years.  But a good arm and the ability to block balls is just as important so I included the catcher's caught stealing percentage and the number of passed balls as well so you can look at the total package.

This list includes catchers who received votes the last time, plus those who didn't have enough appearances to qualify during the last go-round.  Jordan Comadena has the best OBP, but it was a small sample size.  Ben Heath definitely has the best power numbers with 22 doubles and ten home runs, but defensively he only managed a CS% of 19%.  Ryan McCurdy has a terrific .320 batting average (also a small sample size) and decent defensive numbers.  And I really like Ernesto Genoves.  He's only 20 and could turn out to be the whole package; he has the highest slugging percentage and OPS and one of the better CS%.  I'd like to see fewer passed balls but I think he is a player worth watching.

With all that said, here are the 2011 stats for the players.  Look them over and vote.

  1. Really think Roberto Pena deserves some consideration here. Great defensive tools, could make a solid 2nd catcher.

  2. Roberto Pena is definitely on my radar ... great CS% and not a lot of errors or passed balls considering how many games he played in. He also has shown a little pop in his bat. If he can cut down on the strikeouts, he could do well at the plate as well as behind it. And he's only 19 so there is time for him to develop!
