Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for the weekend of July 19-21, 2019

Well, the birthday weekend is over. Back to your regularly scheduled recaps.

Round Rock

The E-Train made their final trip to New Orleans before the franchise moves to Wichita next season. Game one on Friday went the... Baby Cakes' way as they walked off with a 6-5 win in ten innings. At least I won't have to type that name out again next year.

Josh Rojas launched a two-run homer (19) in the 3rd and Jack Mayfield whacked a solo shot (15) in the 6th. Drew Ferguson went 2-4 and scored a run. Brendan McCurry and Reymin Guduan threw two scoreless innings apiece out of the bullpen; McCurry struck out four in a perfect outing, while Guduan allowed a hit and struck out one.

Saturday was a little more fun as the E-Train romped to a 13-0 victory.

Derek Fisher was the only player in the Round Rock lineup who didn't have a hit on Saturday but he did score twice. Carlos Correa hit a double and struck out three times as his rehab continued. Chas McCormick had himself a night as he launched two home runs (10) and drove in six. Kyle Tucker smacked a three-run homer (25) and Mayfield went deep for the second consecutive night when he sent one out for a two-run blast, his 16th home run of the season.

Brandon Bielak had a no-hitter going through six innings until Isan Díaz doubled to lead off the 7th. Bielak finished the inning without further incident; in seven innings, he allowed the one hit, walked two, and struck out seven. Dean Deetz struck out two over two perfect innings to complete the shutout.

Sunday's series finale was rained out. If necessary, it will be made up as part of a doubleheader on August 24 in Round Rock in the final series between these two teams.

Round Rock has Monday off. They'll begin a three-game series against Omaha on Tuesday.

Corpus Christi

The Hooks welcomed Springfield to Whataburger Field but the Cardinals have proven to be rather rude guests as they've taken two of the first three games of this series.

Corpus walked off with a 3-2 win in Friday's series opener. Osvaldo Duarte smacked a solo home run (11). Colton Shaver whacked a solo homer (13) in the 5th and played the hero with his walk-off RBI single in the 9th. Bryan Abreu shined out of the bullpen as he allowed two hits and struck out seven over four scoreless innings.

Springfield scored a run in each of the final three innings to break a 2-2 tie on Saturday as they went on to win 5-2. Granden Goetzman drove in both of the Hooks' runs in Saturday's game; he hit an RBI single in the 1st and then whacked a solo homer (15) in the 6th inning. Carlos Sanabria allowed a hit and struck out four in two scoreless innings of relief.

The Cardinals scored two in the top of the 9th to steal Sunday's game by a final score of 3-2. Seth Beer had an RBI single in the 4th and Ronnie Dawson broke a 1-1 tie with a solo shot (16) in the 8th. Dawson and Bryan de la Cruz both went 2-4 from the top of the order. Yohan Ramirez allowed two hits, walked three, and struck out four over five shutout innings.

Corpus Christi and Springfield will conclude this series tonight at 6:15 as Chad Donato goes up against Johan Oviedo.

Fayetteville

The Woodpeckers finished up a series in Lynchburg on Friday before they spent Saturday and Sunday in Potomac.

The Hillcats took the Friday finale by a final of 6-4 as they jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the first two innings. Corey Julks finished 4-5 with an RBI single and a solo homer (3).

Fayetteville and Potomac kicked off their series with a doubleheader on Saturday. The P-Nats walked off with a 4-3 victory in game one. That's the 13th time that the Woodpeckers have walked off with a loss this season. Come on. Scott Manea smacked a two-run homer (7) in the 5th and Ross Adolph hit an RBI single.

The Woodpeckers got even in game two as they scored four in the top of the 7th to snatch a 5-4 win. Jonathan Arauz hit an RBI single in the 1st. Chandler Taylor hit an RBI single in the 7th and then Arauz delivered the big hit as he whacked a three-run home run (8) to put Fayetteville in front. Shawn Dubin only managed to get two outs in the 1st but the bullpen picked him up and finished with 6.1 innings of one-run ball. Joey Gonzalez allowed two hits, one of which was a solo homer, walked one, and struck out four in 3.1 innings and Humberto Castellanos allowed one hit and fanned four over the final three innings.

The Nationals took another 4-3 game on Sunday; Fayetteville got a run in the 9th but the rally fell short. Miguelangel Sierra went 2-4 with a solo homer in the 6th and scored twice and Scott Schreiber led off the 9th with a homer that cut the deficit to one run.

Fayetteville and Potomac will wrap up this series tonight at 7:05 Eastern. Austin Hansen will take on Tim Cate.

Quad Cities

The Banditos dropped the finale of their series with Dayton by a score of 7-1 on Friday.

They also lost on Saturday, dropping the opener of their series with Bowling Green by a final of 3-2. Both of their runs came in the 8th; Ramiro Rodriguez hit a sac fly and Oscar Campos hit an RBI single. Layne Henderson allowed a hit and struck out seven over 3.1 scoreless innings.

Quad Cities got even on Sunday by walking off with a 4-3 victory. They got three in the 3rd on a two-run triple from Trey Dawson and he scored on Ramiro Rodriguez's sac fly. Alex Holderbach won it with a walk-off, opposite-field solo homer (3) in the bottom of the 9th. Two of Holderbach's three home runs have come in walk-off fashion.

Jonathan Bermúdez will start Quad Cities' series finale with the Hot Rods at 1:15.

Tri-City

The ValleyCats dropped their series finale with Lowell by a final of 6-5 on Friday. Blair Henley allowed two hits, walked two, and struck out five over three scoreless innings. Nate Perry hit a two-run double.

Tri-City opened up a series with Vermont on Saturday and they won the first game by a final of 8-5 in ten innings. Korey Lee went 3-4 with an RBI triple and a two-run single. Zach Biermann broke the tie in the first extra frame with a two-run single and Luis Santana added some insurance with an RBI single. Valente Bellozo got the win as he allowed a hit, walked one, and struck out three over the final three innings.

The Lake Monsters won 6-3 on Sunday. Lee singled, scored twice, and stole three bases.

Tri-City and Vermont will conclude their series at 7:05 Eastern.

GCL Astros

The Palm Beach 'Stros lost 5-1 to the Marlins on Friday but they rebounded to knock off the Nationals 6-1 on Saturday and stunned the Mets by scoring five runs in the final three innings to walk off with a 9-8 victory on Sunday.

On Saturday, Alex Palmer earned his first win as a pro as he allowed one hit and struck out six over three scoreless innings. Tyler Krabbe went 4-5 on Sunday; he launched a solo homer and then hit the game-tying RBI single in the 8th and won it with another RBI single in the 9th.

DSL Astros

The Dominican 'Stros split their two games with the Marlins, losing 8-2 on Saturday and winning 6-4 on Sunday. Freddy Guilamo and Ricardo Balogh had two hits apiece on Sunday; Edinson Batista allowed two hits, walked one, and struck out five over 3.1 scoreless innings.
