Roster Moves - 10/13

As expected, the Astros are clearing more space on the 40-Man roster ahead of the Rule 5 draft in December.  The roster was at the full 40-Man complement (plus an additional four players on the 60-day DL that did not count against the 40) at the end of the season.  The first players outrighted were Blake King, Lance Pendleton and Xavier Cedeno, bringing the roster down to 37.

Yesterday, the Astros announced that three additional players were outrighted to OKC after passing through waivers - J.R. Towles, Jose Valdez and Alberto Arias.  Since Arias was on the 60-day DL, that only reduces the number by two, bringing the roster down to 35 and giving the Astros a little more wiggle room as they prepare to protect players from the Rule 5 draft.

Arias and Valdez can elect to become free agents and J. R. Towles will automatically become a free agent after the World Series.  The Astros can still attempt to re-sign them if they become free agents.

In Arizona Fall League action, Salt River won 10-5 over Scottsdale. Jay Austin got a start going 0-4 with an RBI (SF).  Kody Hinze went 1-4 with an RBI.

VENEZUELAN LEAGUE
Not many Astros saw action in the first day of the Venezuelan League.  Arcenio Leon (Zulia) had a rough first outing, pitching 0.0 innings, giving up 3H, 4ER and a walk in Zulia's loss to the Magallanes.  On the brighter side, Sergio Perez went 3.2 innings with 3H, 1ER, 0BB & 5SO in his start for Aragua in their win over Lara.  Oswaldo Navarro went 0-2 with a SO for Lara.

Happy Birthday - 10/13

RF Jonathan Gaston (25)
Originally from California, Gaston was drafted in the 7th round in 2008 out of the University of Arizona.  In his two seasons with Corpus Christi, he has been unable to duplicate his great 2009 season at Lancaster in which he hit 35 home runs and drove in 100.  This year, Gaston's numbers (.236 BA & 2.87 OBP) were hampered by a slow start and a terrible August.  But he did finish off the season on a high note, hitting .368 over the final 5 games.

3B David Flores (25)
Drafted out of Cal State Sacramento in the 18th round in 2008, Flores split his time in 2011 between Lancaster and Corpus Christi with mixed results.  At Lancaster, Flores hit .311 with a .371 OBP, but he hasn't been able to translate that success to Corpus yet, hitting .203 with a .264 OBP in that venue.  He ended the season with 21 doubles and 18 runs and a composite batting average of .251.

Arizona Fall League & Caribbean League Updates

The Salt River Rafters lost to the Suprise Saguaros 11-4 in Jason Castro's first action since suffering a ribcage injury in the instructional league in Florida.  It wasn't his best game, though, as he went 0-3 with a walk, allowed 2 stolen bases (caught one) and was charged with a passed ball.  Jacob Goebbert also had a rough night, going 0-4, but Kody Hinze had another strong night at the plate, going 2-4 with a double, 2 RBI's and 2 SO's.  Hinze is currently hitting .467.  Josh Zeid pitched one inning and gave up 3 hits, 2 runs and a walk.  Not a good day overall for Salt River.

In the Mexican Pacific league, Luis Durango went 1-6 with 2 SO's in a 10-7 loss to Navajoa.

The Venezuelan League starts today.
