The U.S. had to hope for a win by the previously winless Chinese Taipei over Puerto Rico on Sunday to stay alive. And then they had to beat the 6-1 home team of Panama to advance to the next round in the Baseball World Cup. Mission accomplished due to an extremely strong outing by Andy Van Hekken who pitched 8 innings, giving up only 5 hits and no runs.
I will post the schedule for the next round when it becomes available.
Next up:
Canada (6-1) vs. Australia (4-3) - 2:00 p.m.
U.S. (4-3) vs. Cuba (7-0) - 7:30 p.m.
Here's the story from Baseball America on yesterday's U.S. vs. Panama game plus info on how the standings work going into Round 2.
