Houston signed RHP Lance Pendleton to a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training. In addition, RHP Paul Clemens was added to the 40-man roster before tonight's deadline to protect players from the Rule 5 draft. Clemens was just listed (yesterday) as the #5 prospect in the Astros system by Baseball America. The story is here.
I'm somewhat surprised that Houston did not choose to protect Kody Hinze, particularly since he just participated in the Arizona Fall League. When the Rule 5 draft rolls around on December 8th, I will be particularly interested in Kody Hinze and, as to the AA level of the Rule 5 draft, RHP Dayan Diaz.
The 40-Man Roster now stands at 38 which gives the Astros some flexibility in picking up someone along the lines of Aneury Rodriguez or Wesley Wright, both Rule 5 picks from past seasons.
