FRIDAY'S RESULTS
Lexington over Kannapolis 6-4
It wasn't a pretty win, but a win is a win. Kyle Hallock was awarded his first W despite giving up 11 hits and four runs; Carlos Quevedo was excellent in three innings of relief; and Jason Chowning got his third save while still preserving his 0.00 ERA. The story on this one was terrific offense from Delino Deshields (3x5), Zach Johnson (2x3 with 2RBI), Matt Duffy (2x5) and Alex Todd (2x4). Now if we can just talk about those three GIDP's ...
Oklahoma City over Nashville 2-1
Oklahoma City swept Nashville in the series thanks to a pitching gem by Henry Sosa (1.69 ERA) who only gave up four hits and one walk in seven innings to earn his first win of the season. Enerio del Rosario got the hold and Jose Valdez got his fourth save despite giving up a run in the 9th to make a close game even closer. J.B. Shuck and Jimmy Paredes both went 2x4, and Paredes and Justin Ruggiano each had a double. It's nice to see Paredes' bat heating up.
Lake Elsinore over Lancaster 2-1
This one was just a shame as Wes Musick had an extremely solid complete game outing, but still got pegged with the loss. He had no offensive support as the Lancaster crew was only able to muster three singles and a walk. Their only run was scored by Erik Castro, thanks to a fielding error and a well-placed ground out by Rafael Valenzuela.
GAME OF THE DAY
Corpus Christi over Frisco 6-0
What went right: Starting pitching, relief pitching, offensive power and action on the base paths. Corpus Christi needed this win badly, having lost their last five games. Brett Oberholtzer, who had struggled in his previous two starts, had no trouble in this one with a very strong performance. Kevin Chapman kept the door closed in relief. Jonathan Singleton got his first home run of the season and Brandon Barnes added two more for good measure. There were three stolen bases including Andy Simunic's steal of home.
Brett Oberholtzer (W, 1-0) - 7IP 3H 0R 0BB 8SO
Kevin Chapman - 2IP 3H 0R 0BB 3SO
Austin Wates - 2x4 R SB CS
Jonathan Singleton - 1x4 HR RBI SO R
Brandon Barnes - 2x4 2HR 2HR 2RBI 2R
Chris Wallace - 2x3 BB R SB
Andrew Simunic - 2x3 RBI R SB
What went wrong: One error (Thompson, fielding), one caught stealing (Wates) and one hit by pitch (Oberholtzer).
PITCHER OF THE DAY
Oberholtzer gets the nod. In his first two starts, Oberholtzer couldn't get past 4.1 innings in either. His ERA coming in to Friday's game was 9.35 - he lowered it to 5.17 in one outing. I also really like that he hasn't walked a batter since his first outing. I'm extremely hopeful that this excellent outing will lead to many, many more over the season.
PLAYER OF THE DAY
Brandon Barnes is in beast mode. He had two home runs last night and his current batting line after 13 games is .385/.407/.750/1.157. Case closed.
