Minor League Recaps

Monday's Results

DSL Cardinals over DSL Astros 3-1
Edwin Villarroel wasn't bad at all, but when your hitters only manage one run on three hits, you just about have to be perfect. And he wasn't. Luis Abad almost was perfect in his four innings as he allowed only one walk with four strikeouts. Hector Roa, in his first professional appearance, scored the Astros only run on a solo homer.

GCL Marlins over GCL Astros 3-2
Raul Rivera and Chia-Jen Lo handled the first three innings quite capably and still have a 0.00 ERA in common. Edison Frias managed the next five innings while allowing only one earned run and Ambiriox de Leon ended up with the loss as he gave up the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. No Astro had an extra base hit. No Astro had more than one hit. You can't win many games that way.

Greeneville over Bristol 6-5
Greeneville used six pitchers in this game. Daniel Minor got the start and allowed two runs on five hits over 4.1 innings thanks to Zachary Hardoin allowing his inherited runners to score. Jordan Jankowski allowed another two in his 1.2 innings before giving way to Zach Dando and Scott Zuloaga who broke the run trends.  Mike Hausman had the yin and yang of the pitching staff down pat and he gave up the final run in the ninth for a blown save, but was rewarded with a win as Greeneville scored in the bottom of the frame. Terrell Joyce was the hero of the night as he went three-for-five with a double and three RBIs, including the game winner.

Tri-City over Aberdeen 5-2
Juri Perez pitched a very strong 6.2 innings, but it was Travis Ballew that got the win in relief (his third) as he pitched a perfect 1.1 innings. Blake Ford already has his seventh save of the season. Jesse Wierzbicki (2x3) had the only extra base hit for Tri-City which happened to be solo home run. Jarrod McKinney was also two-for-three, and Joe Sclafani drove in two. Wierzbicki, McKinney and Austin Elkins all had stolen bases. Andrew Aplin had two and now has 13 for the season.

Corpus Christi over Tulsa 16-2
That had to leave a mark. Jose Cisnero (W, 7-6) was the beneficiary of the Hooks hitters' largesse. Cisnero allowed the only two Tulsa runs, while Henry Villar and Kevin Chapman provided scoreless relief. Obviously, in a 16-2 game, there will be a number of very good offensive performances. Primary among those was Andy Simunic's four-for-five, three run night; Jose Martinez' and Drew Locke's three RBI evenings; and great nights from Jon Singleton (2x3, 2RBI, 3BB, 3R) and Jay Fernandez (2x5, HR, 2RBI, 2R). Corpus actually had their own home run derby with Fernandez, Locke, Martinez and Jake Goebbert all hitting one out. Villar also had his 38th stolen base.

Lancaster over Stockton 8-5
David Martinez pitched much better than his final line might indicate as he had a shutout going in his first five innings. He gave up four runs in the sixth, but three of them were unearned thanks to two errors on Alex Todd on the same play. Kirk Clark got the win in relief after pitching a perfect two innings. Jose Trinidad made it a little too interesting as he loaded the bases in the ninth with no outs, but managed to get out of it with only one run allowed. Erik Castro started the scoring with a solo home run in the fifth, and then he put an exclamation point on it with a grand slam in the seventh. Kike Hernandez also shone with his four-for-four night, including a triple.
