Astros Minor League Playoff Recap and Final Results

Saturday's Game

Quad Cities over South Bend 4-2
Quad Cities won the Midwest League crown by sweeping South Bend in three games. Josh Hader got the start and was in complete control from the start. In seven shutout innings, he allowed three scattered singles and struck out eight batters. He didn't allow his one walk until his final inning of work. And the River Bandits got to work early with two runs in the first and two in the second. In the first inning, Tony Kemp singled and came home on a Teoscar Hernandez sac bunt and two-base throwing error. Hernandez was then driven in by Danry Vasquez (1x3 BB RBI). Rio Ruiz (1x3 HR BB) led off the second with a solo home run. Jordan Scott then hit a one-out single and was driven in by a two-out Tony Kemp (3x4 2B RBI R) double. The Bandits threatened again in the fifth and the sixth, and had a runner in scoring position with one out in the eighth, but never got another run across. Mitch Lambson came in for Quad Cities in the eighth, struck out the first two batters, walked one and then got a ground out for the third out. Andrew Walter, who hadn't given up a run since joining the Bandits, came in for the ninth and proved he was mortal. He struck out the first batter, but a single and a home run later, the 4-0 lead became a 4-2 lead. After walking the next batter, Walter then settled in to get the final two outs on a pop up in foul territory and a fly out to center field.

Player of the Day: Tony Kemp was three-for-four, scored the first run and drove in the second. He hit .375 during the playoffs. Nicely done!

Pitcher of the Day: Seven shutout innings in a Championship Series game and he doesn't turn 20 until April. Just think about that while I congratulate Josh Hader as my final Pitcher of the Day for the 2013 season.

  1. ok now MILB season is over ...withdrawal then realization no Valley Cat's games, no former Gato games... but spring training and the draft are just around the corner. Congrats to all the former Gatos on their seasons.
