Astros Minor League Recaps

Wednesday's Games

The complete Astros MiLB playoff schedule can be found here.

REGULAR SEASON

Brooklyn over Tri-City 4-2
This was the final game of the regular season for the 'Cats with playoff games starting on Friday. Edgar Gonzalez threw a perfect first inning as a part of his rehab and was followed by three from Troy Scribner whose only hit allowed was a home run. He walked one and struck out five. Randall Fant got the loss as he was charged with three runs in the fifth inning without recording an out. Krishawn Holley allowed two of those to score, but followed with an uneventful sixth. Zach Dando and Chris Munnelly took it the rest of the way and allowed no further runs. The ValleyCats did all of their scoring in the first and second. Jack Mayfield scored on a ground out in the first and Ydarqui Marte singled in Ernesto Genoves in the second. Yonathan Mejia was two-for-five with a double and Jon Kemmer was three-for-three.

PLAYOFFS

Omaha over Oklahoma City 3-1
Asher Wojciechowski pitched the first eight innings and one batter into the ninth. Unfortunately that one batter in the ninth hit a home run off Wojo. He allowed three scattered runs on five hits, walked two and struck out five. Pat Urckfitz and Jose Cisnero finished off the ninth inning and allowed only one additional hit between them. Oklahoma City was held to five hits. Their only run came in the seventh as Che-Hsuan Lin walked, advanced to second on a Carlos Perez walk, advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on a fielding error. George Springer went two-for-three with a walk and a stolen base; and Brandon Laird walked twice.

Corpus over San Antonio 2-1 in 11 innings
Mike Foltynewicz got the start, pitching seven innings and allowing the only Missions run in the sixth when a little wildness on his part (HBP WP E) came back to haunt him. He allowed five hits and two walks while striking out six. He was followed by two scoreless innings each from Alex Sogard and Jonas Dufek who was awarded the win. The Hooks scored their first run in the seventh on an RBI single from Matt Duffy. Duffy was the hero again in the 11th as his sac fly drove in Domingo Santana (2x4 BB 2R) for the winning run. The Hooks were held to six hits, including a double from Preston Tucker, but walked seven times. Kike Hernandez and Erik Castro each walked twice.

Quad Cities over Cedar Rapids 2-1
Chris Devenski tossed the first five and allowed the only Kernels run in the second on two of only three hits that he allowed for the evening. He walked three and struck out one. In all, Cedar Rapids only managed four hits with the fourth one coming off Mitch Lambson in his third inning of work. Andrew Walter retired the final four batters of the game, striking out the side in the ninth. Quad Cities tied it up in the fourth on an RBI single from Rio Ruiz (2x2 BB RBI) scoring Carlos Correa (3x4 R) and then took the lead in the eighth as Teoscar Hernandez scored from third on a double play. Bobby Borchering wore the golden sombrero, striking out four times in the game.

Pulaski over Greeneville 5-3
Francis Ramirez got the start and allowed three runs on five hits over five innings. He walked three and struck out four. Things could have been much worse for Ramirez. In the fourth inning, he allowed a single, walk, single and bases-loaded walk before his team limited the damage to one additional run with a 9-3-5-6-4 triple play on the next batter. Kevin Ferguson recorded the first two outs in the sixth and then was followed by two and a third innings from Erick Gonzalez. Gonzalez allowed two additional runs across in the seventh. Ryan Connolly pitched a perfect ninth. Greeneville scored two in the first on a Chase McDonald (2x4 3RBI) home run. In the sixth, Brian Holberton hit a lead off double and was driven in by McDonald with a single for the final Astros run of the game.

Player of the Day: Matt Duffy got it done for Corpus, driving in both runs and keeping the game from going beyond 11 innings.

Pitchers of the Day: The whole Quad Cities crew (Chris Devenski, Mitch Lambson and Andrew Walter) get a little WTHB love today for their four-hitter. They kept the team in the game and allowed them to win it late.
