Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Saturday, May 10, 2014

You can't stop Tony Kemp, you can only hope to contain him.

Colorado Springs 8, Oklahoma City 2

W- Pedro Hernandez (2-0)
L- Rudy Owens (2-2)

OKC home runs: None.

The RedHawks scored 1 in the 1st and the 9th, but in between those runs, they gave up 8.

Austin Wates, in his first game since being activated from the DL, doubled to lead off the bottom of the 1st and scored one batter later, when Robbie Grossman ripped a double of his own. Grossman scored the other RedHawks run when he came home on a Jon Singleton double in the 9th. Wates and Grossman both finished 2-4 with a double and a run scored, and as mentioned earlier, Grossman drove Wates in for the 1st run of the game.

Rudy Owens went 5.1 innings and allowed 5 runs (4 earned, 2 inherited runners charged to him) on 11 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2. Chia-Jen Lo allowed both of the runners he inherited from Owens to score in the 6th. He went 2 innings and allowed 3 runs of his own (1 inherited runner charged to him) on 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1. Jason Stoffel finished it out by throwing 1.2 scoreless innings. He allowed an RBI single to Ryan Wheeler in the 8th which allowed the runner he inherited from Lo to score, and struck out 2.

Mike Foltynewicz (3-1, 4.20) will get the start today; what will he have in store for an encore after striking out a dozen in his last start? He'll take on Tyler Matzek (1-2, 4.83) at 2:05.

Corpus Christi 5, Frisco 1

W- Travis Ballew (1-0)
L- Joe Saunders (0-2)

CC home runs: Matt Duffy (5, solo in 1st)

The Hooks got on the board in this series with solid pitching and a nice night at the plate from Matt Duffy.

Andrew Aplin opened the scoring in the top of the 1st with an RBI groundout. One batter later, Duffy took Joe Saunders deep (5) to extend the lead to 2-0. René Garcia beat out an RBI infield single in the 4th, Aplin added another groundout in the 5th, and Jio Mier brought home Corpus Christi's final run of the night on a sac fly in the 7th. Duffy led the charge by going 3-4, while Delino DeShields (stolen base [7], run scored), Nolan Fontana, and Preston Tucker (run scored) had 2 hits apiece.

Tommy Shirley went 4 innings and allowed a run on 4 hits, walked 3 (he also hit Frisco C Pat Cantwell twice), and struck out 3. Shirley was knocked out by a high pitch count (91 (53 strikes) through 4). The bullpen came in and brought him home. Travis Ballew was the first man out of the bullpen and got the win; he threw 2 scoreless and allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3. Jorge De Leon punched out 3 over 2 perfect innings, and Pat Urckfitz worked around a pair of 2-out singles to close it out.

The Hooks will look for the split as Brady Rodgers (1-3, 2.72) will take the mound for the series finale to take on Jerad Eickhoff (2-2, 4.13) at 2:05.

Lancaster 12, High Desert 5

W- Kent Emanuel (1-0; 1-2 season)
L- Dylan Unsworth (2-3)
S- Lance McCullers (3)

Lancaster home runs: None.

The JetHawks clinched a winning roadtrip thanks to this 18-hit assault. Interestingly, in a game where both teams combined for 17 runs and 28 hits, no home runs were hit.

Everyone in the Lancaster starting 9+1 had a hit except for Ruben Sosa. The top 3 of the order had 12 of them.

- Tony Kemp was 4-5 with an RBI single in the 7th and scored 4 runs. He's on a 5-game hitting streak, and all 5 of them have been multi-hit games.

- Teoscar Hernandez finished 3-5 with a double, an RBI on a force attempt that resulted in an error in the 7th, and scored twice. He set a new season's-best (for himself) hitting streak with 9 games. In 6 of those 9, he's had multiple hits.

- Carlos Correa went 5-6 with a double and 6 RBI. All but one of his hits last night resulted in an RBI. The double came in the 5th and scored 2. He also added a 2-run single in the 6th. Correa has an 8-game hitting streak going on. In the previous 4 games, he had 1 hit in each game. If he had a hit on May 2 (his first game back; he went 0-3), this could have been a 14-game hitting streak.

Marc Wik, after a pretty fun week in Corpus, found himself a little closer to home in the California League. He hti a 2-out double in the 4th and came around to score on a Carlos Perdomo single. After Correa's 2-run double in the 5th, Bobby Borchering brought him home by clubbing a ground-rule double. Before Correa's 2-run single in the 6th, Perdomo scored on a wild pitch. Perdomo went on to add another RBI single in the 7th, and later in the inning, Correa capped off the scoring with an RBI single.

Kent Emanuel got his first win as a pro as he went 5 innings and gave up 2 runs on 5 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4. Lance McCullers finished it off, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits while walking 4 and striking out 4 in 4 innings.

Chris Devenski (1-4, 3.90) will take on Matt Anderson (3-2, 5.23) in the series finale at 1:05 Pacific.

Quad Cities 6, Beloit 2

W- Chris Lee (1-1)
L- Tyler Hollstegge (0-1)

QC home runs: None.

The Banditos were down 1-0, but they finished the game on a 6-1 run from the 6th-8th innings to sweep the Snappers out of the Quad Cities.

Brett Phillips led off the bottom of the 6th with a single. He made his way around the bases by stealing 2nd (5) and advancing to 3rd on a bunt single from Chan-Jong Moon. Phillips would score the tying run at the expense of Jack Mayfield grounding into a double play. After the twin killing, Conrad Gregor gave the River Bandits the lead with an RBI single. Beloit tied the game briefly with a run in the top of the 7th, but a 2-out rally in the bottom of the inning that started with a Thomas Lindauer walk culminated in a 2-run single for James Ramsay. Brian Holberton delivered some insurance with a 2-run double in the 8th. Ramsay (double, 2 walks, run scored), Holberton (2-run double), Gregor (RBI single, double), and Phillips (steal, double, 2 runs scored) all had 2-hit evenings.

Andrew Thurman went 4 innings and allowed a run on 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 4. Chris Lee tagged in and also threw 4 innings. He gave up a run on 4 hits and struck out 3. Zach Morton finished it off with a 1-2-3 9th, striking out 1.

The River Bandits have the day off; they'll be traveling to Appleton, Wisconsin (Dan Gulbransen's hometown) to begin a roadtrip that begins with 3 games against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Michael Feliz (1-1, 5.52) will face Preston Gainey (1-2, 2.59) in the opener tomorrow.
