For the first time this season, every Minor League affiliate of the Houston Astros is in action.
Let's play 2 in the Quad Cities!
Oklahoma City 12, Reno 8
W- Mike Foltynewicz (6-4)
L- Zeke Spruill (3-4)
S- Jason Stoffel (8)
OKC home runs: Kiké Hernandez (7, 8 season; solo in 9th)
The RedHawks won the series even though their pitchers had a relatively rough night.
If you asked Mike Foltynewicz, he'd most definitely say that this was far from his best outing. He slogged his way through 5.2 innings and allowed 6 runs (5 earned) on 7 hits (2-run homer), walked 5, and struck out 3. He was also called for a balk, uncorked a wild pitch, and hit a batter. Jorge De Leon was the first man out; he went 1.2 innings and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2. Jason Stoffel ended up getting the 5-out save; he allowed a hit and struck out 1.
It was a huge night for one Enrique Hernandez; He went 4-5 with 5 runs scored and finished a double shy of the cycle. Hernandez opened the scoring with an RBI triple in the 1st inning, and one batter later, he would score on a Marc Krauss single. Krauss, who finished 3-5 with 2 doubles and 3 runs scored, came home on a single from L.J. Hoes. In the 2nd, Krauss added a 2-run double to his ledger and came home on a Domingo Santana double. Santana came around to score on a single from Preston Tucker. Joe Sclafani, who also went 3-5, clubbed an RBI triple in the 5th. In the 6th, Santana had an RBI single and Hoes brought in another run on a groundout. Hernandez scored on an error in the 7th, and his blast was the final RedHawks run of the night. Domingo went 2-4 to extend his hitting streak to 8 games; this was also his 3rd straight multi-hit game. Gregorio Petit was 2-5, and Hoes added a steal (4).
OKC will begin the 2nd leg of their West Coast trip tonight in Tacoma. Brett Oberholtzer will take on James Carraway at 7:05.
Corpus Christi 4, Frisco 1
W- Brady Rodgers (2-9)
L- Alex "Chi-Chi" Gonzalez (1-2, 6-4 season)
S- David Rollins (1)
CC home runs: None.
The Hooks had a pair of 2-run innings, and Brady Rodgers and David Rollins stifled the Roughrider offense as they got in the win column for the 1st time in the 2nd half.
And finally, a nightmarish stretch came to an end for Rodgers, who snapped a personal 8-decision losing streak (including 6 straight) with 5 solid innings. His only blemish was a solo homer to Joey Gallo in the 2nd. He allowed 3 other hits, walked 1, and struck out 4. David Rollins completed the shutdown of the Frisco offense as he allowed 3 hits and struck out 6 over 4 scoreless.
Carlos Perdomo opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 3rd. One batter later, Jio Mier gave the Hooks the lead with a sac fly. Corpus got 2 more in the 4th on a couple of RBI singles from Ruben Sosa and Jonathan Meyer. All 12 Hooks hits were singles. Meyer went 3-4, while Sosa, Delino DeShields, and Telvin Nash each had 2 hits.
Mike Hauschild will get the start in game 3; he'll face Alec Asher at 7:10.
Lancaster 3, Lake Elsinore 2
W- Josh Hader (7-0)
L- Zach Eflin (5-4)
S- Zach Morton (1)
Lancaster home runs: Carlos Correa (6, solo in 1st)
On a night where their offense was held in check, Josh Hader and Zach Morton teamed up to shackle the Lake Elsinore offense.
Hader pitched 6 innings and gave up a run on 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3. Morton allowed a run (on a groundout), a hit, walked 2, and fanned 2 over 3 innings.
With Nolan Fontana heading to the DL in Corpus Christi, a certain 19-year-old was looking to state his case for promotion. And Carlos Correa's opening argument came in the form of a solo home run in the 1st, which opened up the scoring for Lancaster. Dan Gulbransen hit an RBI single in the 2nd, and Brandon Meredith added an RBI single of his own in the 5th. The Vanderbilt duo of Tony Kemp and Conrad Gregor had 2 hits apiece; Gregor's were both doubles. Rio Ruiz joined them in the 2-hit club.
In game 3 of this series, Chris Devenski will take on Colin Rea at 8:05.
Game 1: Quad Cities 2, Peoria 1
W- Edison Frias (4-3)
L- Jimmy Reed (3-3)
S- Frederick Tiburcio (4)
QC home runs: Chan-Jong Moon (2, solo in 3rd)
In the 1st game of this twinbill (with Jayne in attendance), Chan-Jong Moon was pretty much the entire offense. He had 2 of the 3 River Bandits hits, one of which was a homer. He also scored both of the runs and had a stolen base (25). The other hit belonged to Brett Booth, who drove Moon in with a single in the 6th.
Edison Frias tossed 6 shutout innings and allowed 5 hits, walked 2, and struck out 4. Frederick Tiburcio gave up a run on 2 hits and struck out 1, but he was still able to close it out. That was the first earned run that Tiburcio has surrendered this season.
What did game 2 have in store for Quad Cities?
Game 2: Peoria 1, Quad Cities 0
W- Chase Brookshire (2-3)
L- Evan Grills (2-3)
S- Steven Sabatino (2)
QC home runs: None.
The River Bandits had to settle for the split as they couldn't provide any run support for Evan Grills, who went the distance in the nightcap. Grills allowed an unearned run on 7 hits, walked 1, struck out 2, induced 11 groundouts, and got 1 flyball out. He faced 2 batters over the minimum.
Brett Phillips was 2-3 with a double. The other 3 hits belonged to Chan-Jong Moon, Ronnie Mitchell, and Catfish Elkins.
In game 3 of this series, Kevin Comer will face Blake McKnight. First pitch is at 6:00.
Lowell 8, Tri-City 7
W- Ellis Jimenez (1-1)
L- Derick Velazquez (0-1)
TC home runs: Marc Wik (1, 2 season; led off game)
The ValleyCats erased a 5-1 deficit and actually took a 7-6 lead... only to see the Spinners walk off with the win in the series opener.
Marc Wik finished 3-5 with 2 runs scored; he kicked off the game with a homer. That would be the only TC run until the 6th, when Ariel Ovando hit an RBI double. Then, in the 7th, the ValleyCats offense awoke and put up a 5-spot in the inning. A.J. Reed reached on an error that allowed Wik and Mott Hyde to score. He was credited with 1 RBI on the play, and he would come home himself when J.D. Davis ripped a double. Ricky Gingras followed that up with an RBI single, and Ovando capped off the scoring with an RBI groundout. Hyde finished 2-3.
Luis Ordosgoitti pitched 4 innings and allowed 3 runs on 4 hits (2-run homer), walked 2, and struck out 2. Raul Rivera allowed 2 runs (1 earned; on a double play and an error), 1 hit, walked 2, and struck out 1 in the 5th. Ryan Thompson pitched the 6th and allowed a run on a sac fly, a single, and walked 1. Blaine Sims went 2 innings and the only ding on his line was a solo homer to Franklin Guzman in the 7th, which was the only hit he allowed. It tied the game at 7. He walked 1 and struck out 3. Derick Velazquez got 1 out in the 9th, but a couple of ground balls found their way into the outfield, and that gave Lowell the win.
In game 2 of this series, Troy Scribner will take on Randy Perez. First pitch is at 4:05.
Elizabethton 6, Greeneville 4
W- Dereck Rodriguez (1-0)
L- Reymin Guduan (0-1)
S- C.K. Irby (1)
Greeneville home runs: None.
A 3-run 8th for Elizabethton condemned the Appy Astros to a 2nd consecutive loss.
Devonte German got the start; he went 4 innings and gave up a run on 5 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2. Reymin Guduan was all over the place in his 4 innings; he allowed just 2 hits, but he also allowed 5 runs (2 earned), walked 6, and struck out 4. In his 1st inning as a pro, Josh James struck out the side in order in the 9th.
Sean McMullen finished 3-5 with a couple of runs scored; he opened up the scoring with an RBI single in the 1st. Later in the inning, Jake Nottingham brought him home with a double. McMullen scored again on a wild pitch in the 8th, and later in that frame, Bryan Muniz grounded into a force out that scored Trent Woodward. Antonio Nuñez joined McMullen in the multi-hit club as he went 2-4 in his first game.
Greeneville will look to avoid the sweep as Gerardo Juarez takes on Chih-Wei Hu in the finale. First pitch is at 5:00.
GCL Astros 8, GCL Braves 4
W- Harold Arauz (1-0)
L- Francisco Gonzalez (0-1)
GCL home runs: Kristian Trompiz (1, 2-run in 4th)
The Kissimmee Stros started off their campaign on a winning note as they doubled up the Braves. The Braves briefly took the lead after they put up 3 in the 3rd, but the GCLstros finished the game on a 6-1 run.
Edwin Medina scored the first run of the season as he came home on a Jean Estrella groundout in the 1st. Dexture McCall's first career hit and RBI came in the form of a triple in the 2nd. Trompiz put the Astros on top for good with his homer in the 4th. In the 5th, Randy Cesar scored on a wild pitch. There were few, if any, U.S. debut jitters for Trompiz, who added an RBI double and scored on an error in the inning. McCall had few, if any, first-game jitters; he drove in the final run of the afternoon with a single and joined Trompiz, Cesar, and Medina in the 2-hit club.
R.J. Alaniz, making his season debut, went 4 innings and allowed 3 unearned runs on 6 hits and struck out 4. Harold Arauz, making his U.S. debut, threw 4 scoreless and allowed a hit, walked 3, and struck out 5. Juan Delis allowed a run on 2 hits in the 9th.
These two teams will go at it again; the only difference is a change of venue. They'll be at the Wide World of Sports complex at Disney World. This game is just about to kick off.
DSL Athletics 8, Astros Blue 4
W- Ivan Andueza (1-0)
L- Joselo Pinales (1-2)
Blue home runs: None.
The Blue team is on a 5-game slide after they got doubled up by the A's.
Connor MacDonald finished 2-4 with an RBI force out in the 3rd; an error allowed him to advance to 2nd, and he would eventually score on a wild pitch. Jose Benjamin hit a sac fly in the 8th, and Wander Franco went 3-4 with an RBI single in the 9th. Marcos Almonte went 2-5 with a run scored.
Joselo Pinales went 5 innings and allowed 3 runs on 5 hits, walked 1, and struck out 5. Gabriel Pirela got roughed up in his 2.1 innings, allowing 5 runs (4 earned, 1 inherited runner charged to him on a passed ball) on 7 hits, walking 1, and striking out 1. Ezequiel Madera struck out 2 over 1.2 perfect innings. A passed ball from Hayden Timberlake allowed the runner that Madera inherited from Pirela to score.
The Blue team will host the Dodgers at 9:30.
DSL Brewers 8, DSL Astros Orange 5
W- Jesus Brea (1-0)
L- Juan Cuevas (0-3)
Orange home runs: None.
The Orange team blew a 5-0 lead as the Brewers scored 4 in the 7th and 4 in the 8th.
Frankeny Fernandez went 2-5 and opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 3rd. Luis Vasquez hit a 2-run single in the 5th and came home on a double from Cristopher Luciano. Vasquez added an RBI single in the 7th. The three of them, in addition to Rodrigo Ayarza, had 2-hit games. Fernandez (9), Ayarza (7), and Andy Piñeda (5) had steals; Piñeda also scored 2 runs.
Cristhopher Santamaria cruised through this outing, but then the wheels started to fall off for him in the 7th. He went 6.1 innings and allowed 4 runs (2 inherited runners charged to him) on 5 hits (2-run homer) and struck out 6. Joel Belboder got the final 2 outs of the 7th, but not before he allowed the 2 runners he inherited from Santamaria to score on a 2-run double. He allowed one other hit. Juan Cuevas bore the brunt of the Brewers' 8th-inning; 3 of the 4 runs he allowed in the frame were earned, and he allowed 5 hits and struck out 2.
The Orange team is at the Angels complex for a game that'll start in a few minutes.
