Well, I've been AWOL, so I apologize for that. I haven't been completely consumed by the NFL just yet...
The Fresno Grizzlies won their first Pacific Coast League championship by topping the Round Rock Express 7-3 in the deciding game 5 at Chukchansi Park on Sunday afternoon. This is the first Minor League championship for the city of Fresno since 1987, when the Fresno Giants won the California League crown.
Fresno responded to a Round Rock rally that cut their lead to 1 run with a 3-run 7th that put them up 7-3. The Express scored first in the 1st, but Tyler White whacked a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 1st to put the Grizz on the board and in the lead. Tony Kemp, who finished 3-4 on his way to earning Playoff MVP honors, added a sac fly in the 2nd and hit an RBI single in the 4th. Alex Presley led off the 7th with a solo shot, and Robbie Grossman added some insurance with a 2-run double later in the frame.
Mark Appel went 5.2 innings and allowed 3 runs on 6 hits (2-run homer), walked 2, and struck out a career high-tying 10. Jordan Jankowski was called upon to get the final out of the 6th, and he did so, although he had to navigate out of possible trouble to do so. Jankowski ended up going 1.2 innings and allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3. Kevin Chapman got the final 2 outs of the 8th, striking out 1. James Hoyt finished off a magical season for the Fresno Grizzlies as he worked around a hit and struck out 2 to end it. Hoyt punched out Nomar Mazara for the final out of the series.
Next up is the AAA National Championship, which will take place tomorrow in El Paso at 7:05. The Grizzlies will take on the Columbus Clippers, the champions of the International League. This game will be televised on the NBC Sports Network.
NBC Sports is channel 649 on Comcast, 220 on DirecTV, 159 on Dish, and 1640 on AT&T U-Verse. These are the HD listings.
