Checking in on the Astros minor league teams as they work to find postseason glory ...
STANDINGS/PLAYOFF INFO
OK, so I posted earlier this week and I was a little brain-dead from ole Harvey and I whiffed on what I wrote about Corpus Christi's chances to make the playoffs. Since San Antonio won both the first half and second half, the second place team for the season will face them in the Division Series. So, Corpus was eliminated from winning the second half, but they are still clinging to a shot at the postseason as they trail Midland by one-half game for the second place season record. They will play Frisco tonight (on the road) before returning to play four games against San Antonio (the team with the best record) at home on Saturday through Monday (with a double-header on Sunday) and they are currently on a five-game win streak. Midland hosts San Antonio for one final game on Friday (after losing the first three of the series to them) and then will hit the road to play Frisco for three over the long weekend; Midland is currently on a six game losing streak. So, yes, Corpus Christi is still in it and, yes, it's getting interesting.
Fresno was eliminated from the postseason on Thursday after getting swept by El Paso. They play their final four games tonight through Monday on the road in Salt Lake.
Buies Creek is making things a little close for comfort. When last I wrote, they were four games up with six games left to play. Well, they've lost two games since then and Down East (the second place team) has won three and are now only a game and a half out of first place. The two teams will be facing each other for a four-game series
Quad Cities, as I wrote earlier this week, has clinched and will start their postseason play next Wednesday. The only question remaining is who their first round opponent will be as Peoria (Cardinals) and Cedar Rapids (Twins) vie for that playoff berth. Quad Cities has four games remaining, one on the road in Peoria tonight, followed by three at home over the long weekend against Wisconsin.
Tri-City has already been eliminated from the wild card spot and is only one loss away from being eliminated in their division. They have seven games remaining with the final five against the first and second place teams in the division.
Greeneville (33-34) won a playoff berth on the final day of the season and will start the postseason tomorrow against Elizabethton (41-27). They will host the Twins for the first game of the three-game series before moving to Elizabethton for the final two games (if the third game is necessary) on Sunday and Monday.
The GCL has been eliminated from the postseason and will play their final game tomorrow while the DSL teams ended their seasons last week.
