ASTROS MILB STANDOUTS FOR THE WEEK

Abraham Toro - May 2018

Since I've been traveling, I won't be posting standouts for the week. HOWEVER, please let it be known that Abraham Toro was only hitting for a .217 average when I got to Myrtle Beach to watch the Buies Creek Astros on Friday so I decided to wait until he was in a better groove at the plate before I interviewed him. In his next three games, he hit .692/.733/.846 to raise his average to .266. I would like to claim responsibility for his almost 50 point jump in average, but I believe it's just that he's a really good player. I plan to interview him as soon as possible after I finish writing up my other interviews. Honestly, I love having the dilemma of which of the many really good players I should interview next. That wasn't a problem back in the early days!

FORMER ASTROS UPDATE

Elieser Hernández - August 2015

UPDATE: As I surmised in the below post, Hernández did indeed finally make it to the show three days later on May 10th. He allowed only two hits over two innings. His second appearance on Sunday wasn't quite as successful as he allowed one run in his only inning of work, but he has yet to walk a batter and his former Astros teammates are very excited for this baby-faced major leaguer.

[Original Post from May 7th] You may remember that RHP Elieser Hernández was claimed by the Marlins in the December 2017 Rule 5 draft despite never having pitching an inning above High A in the Astros system. After putting up some impressive numbers in Spring Training for the Marlins, Hernández was sidelined when his wisdom tooth surgery resulted in an infection. Following one rehab start in early April, Hernández was back on the shelf for a couple more weeks with a broken nail. He has now made three additional rehab appearances with mixed results and will likely be recalled by the Marlins soon. It will be interesting to see if the 23-year old Venezuelan can stick or if he will be offered back to the Astros.
