All of the Astros' domestic affiliates were off on Monday. However, the Dominican Summer League club was in action and they topped the Royals 1 by a final score of 8-2 to record their first win of the 2018 season.
Jairo Lopez, Diosmerky Taveras, and Christian Mejias pitched three innings apiece. Lopez got the start and allowed an unearned run on a wild pitch, a single, and struck out five. Taveras allowed three hits and struck out two, and Mejias allowed an unearned run on a passed ball, two hits, walked one, and struck out five.
Rolando Espinosa walked to lead off the 2nd inning, advanced to third on a Carlos Hurtado double, and scored the Academy's first run on an Enmanuel Morillo groundout. Hurtado came home on a single from Luis Barajas. Espinosa hit an RBI single in the 3rd inning. Junior Marte singled to start the 5th, stole his way to third, and ended up scoring on an errant throw to third. Victor Mascai smacked a leadoff double in the 8th. He ended up scoring on a Morillo single. Marco van der Wijst ripped a two-run triple in the 9th and scored the final run of the day on a Javier Bermudez sac fly. Mascai and Marte both finished 2-4.
