The Astros' affiliates also found success against Arlington's farm clubs.
Fresno 8, Oklahoma City 5
W- Mike Hauschild (4-5)
L- Emmanuel De Leon (0-1)
S- James Hoyt (5)
Fresno home runs: A.J. Reed (12, 3-run in 1st), D.J. Fisher (2, 2-run in 1st)
The Grizzlies stormed out to a 5-0 lead after the first inning in this Triple-A version of a World Series rematch. It got a little close for comfort, but that's why it's important to get out to a good start; most of the time, it allows a team to withstand a not-so-great finish.
A.J. Reed kicked things off by whacking a three-run homer in the opening frame. Two batters later, D.J. Fisher launched a two-run homer. Jon Kemmer ripped an RBI double in the 5th. Kyle Tucker narrowly missed a leadoff homer in the 5th; he'd settle for a triple and scored on a Tyler White single. White made his way around the bases thanks to a couple of groundouts and scored Fresno's last run of the evening on an RBI single from Fisher, who finished 2-3 on the evening and also stole a base.
Mike Hauschild went 5.2 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits, walked two, and struck out six. Kent Emanuel got the last out of the 6th and pitched the 7th. He allowed a run on two hits, walked one, and struck out two. Brendan McCurry and James Hoyt pitched an inning apiece. McCurry allowed a run on two hits, walked one, and struck out two in the 8th, while Hoyt worked around a walk to close out the game, striking out one.
Trent Thornton gets the start in game two of this series. First pitch is at 7:05 Pacific.
Corpus Christi 11, Frisco 1
W- Ryan Hartman (5-2)
L- Ariel Jurado (2-2)
CC home runs: Alex De Goti 2 (5; solo in 2nd, 3-run in 7th), Josh Rojas (4, 5 season; 2-run in 2nd)
Forrest Whitley did not disappoint in his 2018 season debut and the Hooks romped to a win to take the latest installment of the Lone Star Series in the Texas League.
Whitley allowed an infield single and struck out five in his first four innings of the year. Now that he's back on the mound, he can finally start to put the suspension behind him. The kid made a dumb mistake... who hasn't made a dumb mistake when they were 20? If I'm being honest though, he should get better friends. Sidebar over.
Justin Ferrell worked around a couple of hits to throw a scoreless 5th, striking out one. Ryan Hartman finished it off by allowing a run on six hits, walking one, and striking out four in his four innings of work.
Corpus loaded the bases to begin the bottom of the 1st and got a couple of runs out of it, thanks to a Ryne Birk single and a sacrifice fly from Stephen Wrenn. Alex De Goti launched a solo shot in the 2nd inning, his first homer of the evening. Myles Straw followed with a single. He proceeded to steal second (35) and scored when Josh Rojas whacked a homer of his own. Straw singled with one out in the 4th and dashed home on a Taylor Jones triple. The Hooks salted this one away with five runs in the bottom of the 7th.
Randy César led things off with a single that extended his hitting streak to 30 games. Birk followed with a single and Wrenn ripped an RBI double to bring César home. Birk scored on a Chas McCormick single and De Goti capped off the onslaught by whacking a three-run home run.
Everyone in the lineup had a hit and everyone but Jamie Ritchie scored a run. Birk, Straw, and Rojas all finished with three hits on the night. De Goti's two hits both left the yard. Jones also finished with two hits.
Yoanys Quiala is listed as the probable starter for the first game of Corpus Christi's series against San Antonio, but he's been suspended for a few days. If he is reinstated, he'll face Cal Quantrill at 7:05.
Buies Creek 5, Down East 2
W- Hector Perez (2-2)
L- Walker Weickel (1-5)
S- Ronel Blanco (2)
BC home runs: J.J. Matijevic (5, 8 season; 2-run in 2nd)
The Carolina Stros made it 3-0 for the Houston Astros organization against the Arlington Rangers on Friday.
Hector Perez turned in a dominant outing as he allowed two runs on two hits (solo homer), walked three, and struck out a career-high 12 in 6.2 innings. Ronel Blanco turned in a nice outing of his own in relief as he struck out two over 2.1 perfect innings to earn the save.
J.J. Matijevic led off the game with a double, advanced to third on an error, and scored the game's first run on a sac fly from Osvaldo Duarte. Troy Sieber hit a leadoff single in the 2nd, advanced to third on a Kristian Trompiz double, and scored on a sac fly from Carlos Canelón. Two batters later, Matijevic smacked a two-run homer. Duarte scored the final Buies Creek run of the evening on a Ronnie Dawson sac fly in the 5th. Matijevic, Duarte, and Abraham Toro all had two hits on the evening.
Buies Creek and Down East will continue their series at 6:00 Eastern.
Peoria 5, Quad Cities 1
W- Johan Oviedo (2-5)
L- Parker Mushinski (2-1)
S- Thomas St. Clair (4)
QC home runs: None.
The Banditos dropped their fourth consecutive game, which is definitely not the way they were expecting to start the home stretch of the first half. They had their opportunities to score some runs, but they left 12 men on base.
Corey Julks' RBI single in the 5th was Quad Cities' only scoring play; Alfredo Angarita tried to score another run on the play, but he was thrown out at the plate.
Parker Mushinski went four innings and allowed three runs on three hits (two-run homer), walked one, and struck out two. Leovanny Rodriguez tagged in for three innings and allowed two runs on three hits, walked two, and struck out six. Brendan Feldmann struck out two in a 1-2-3 8th inning.
Patrick Sandoval will take on Alex Fagalde in game two of this series. First pitch is at 6:30.
DSL Athletics 1, DSL Astros 0
W- Manuel Manzanillo (1-0)
L- Jeremy Molero (0-1)
DSL home runs: None.
One run was scored in this game. Unfortunately, it belonged to the Athletics and it allowed them to walk off with the win.
Rolando Espinosa finished 2-4 on the day.
Wender Oberto allowed a hit, walked four, and struck out two over the first 3.2 innings. Heitor Tokar tagged in to throw 4.1 scoreless innings, allowing a hit and striking out four. The winning run scored via error with two outs in the bottom of the 9th off Jeremy Molero. He had a strikeout and a groundout in the inning.
The Academy is getting set to host the Braves later this morning.
