Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for August 5-6, 2018

Sunday's games first.

Fresno

The Grizzlies squandered a 5-0 lead and walked off with a 6-5 loss in ten innings in Memphis on Sunday.

A.J. Reed opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 1st inning. The Grizz got two runs in the 3rd when Jamie Ritchie ripped a double and two more in the 4th when Reed smacked a double. Reed went 3-5 on the day. Myles Straw finished 2-6, stole a couple of bases, and scored twice. Straw now has 56 steals.

Josh James turned in a bare minimum quality start... because he gave up a three-run homer. He allowed two other hits, walked one, and struck out seven. Dean Deetz allowed two runs on three hits in 1.1 innings, and Brendan McCurry allowed the winning run with two outs in the first extra frame. He allowed two hits and fanned four in 1.2 innings.

Fresno took their frustrations out with a little home run derby to start the work week; they sent four balls out in a 12-3 drubbing.

Those four home runs accounted for all of Fresno's offense. Kyle Tucker started things off by launching a two-run shot in the 3rd inning. Later in the 3rd, Yordan Alvarez smacked a three-run homer. A.J. Reed whacked a three-run homer in the 5th and Jack Mayfield capped off the onslaught with a grand slam in the 6th. Myles Straw, Little Tuck, Super Jack, and Reed all finished with two hits on the night. Tucker and Mayfield both scored three runs in this one.

For Reed, that was his 23rd homer of the season. Mayfield has a dozen, Tucker has 15, and Alvarez has six home runs since joining Fresno and 18 overall.

Kent Emanuel, making his first start since May 4, allowed one hit, walked one, and struck out five over five shutout innings. Riley Ferrell was the first man out of the Grizzlies bullpen and went two innings, allowing a run on two hits, walking two, and striking out three. Buddy Boshers and Ralph Garza Jr. pitched one inning apiece and they both allowed a run and struck out one in their inning. Boshers allowed a double and the one run on a groundout in the 8th. Garza allowed a double and the run on a single in the 9th.

Cy Sneed will start the series finale against Jake Woodford, who was Kyle Tucker's teammate at Plant High School in Tampa. First pitch is at 6:35.

Corpus Christi

The Hooks were swept out of Frisco with a 5-1 loss. A grand slam from Juremi Profar in the 2nd inning sent Corpus to its doom...

Corbin Martin went six innings and allowed five runs on seven hits, including the aforementioned grand slam, walked two, and struck out five. Ronel Blanco allowed a hit and got three groundball outs in the 7th and Erasmo Pinales struck out two in a 1-2-3 8th inning.

The Hooks' only run came in the 2nd on a sac fly from Stephen Wrenn. Carlos Correa and Randy César both finished 2-4.

Corpus had Monday off. They'll start a three-game series with Tulsa at 7:05. Ryan Hartman will start the first game and he'll face Justin DeFratus.

Buies Creek

The Carolina Stros wrapped up their series with Lynchburg in explosive fashion as they wiped out the Hillcats by a final of 17-2.

Carson LaRue allowed a hit, walked one, and fanned three in five shutout innings. Abdiel Saldaña tagged in for three innings and allowed a run on three hits and struck out one. Yohan Ramirez got the 9th and he allowed a run on two hits and walked two.

Buies Creek had Monday off. The final edition of the first Lone Star Series in North Carolina kicks off in Kinston at 7:00 Eastern.

Quad Cities

Peoria played some shambolic defense but they used a six-run 7th to top the Banditos 8-7. Colton Shaver smacked a two-run homer in the 9th to cut the deficit to one run, but they couldn't get the tying run across.

Alfredo Angarita opened the scoring with a sac fly in the 1st inning. Marty Costes, who scored on the sac fly, hit a blooper that fell in for an RBI single in the 2nd. Scott Schreiber reached on an error; he then stole second and advanced thanks to an error on the play, and scored on a wild pitch. Logan Mattix, who ended up drawing a walk and advanced to third on the wild pitch that scored Schreiber, also ended up scoring on a wild pitch. Ruben Castro singled, advanced to second on Shaver's base hit, and scored on a single from Chandler Taylor. Shaver's homer in the 9th gives him 11 on the season. Castro also finished with two hits; Costes and Mattix scored two runs apiece.

Leovanny Rodriguez allowed two runs on six hits (solo homer), walked one, and struck out four in 5.1 innings. Hansel Paulino and Tanner Duncan both threw 1.1 innings and they both bore the brunt of Peoria's assault. Paulino allowed five runs (two inherited runners charged to him) on four hits, walked one, and struck out two. Duncan struck out one and the one hit he allowed was a three-run homer to Luken Baker that resulted in Paulino getting charged with two runs.

The Banditos were stunned in the 9th on Monday as the Chiefs scored twice in the bottom half to walk off with a 3-2 win.

Shaver homered for the second straight game when he... led the game off with a homer. Scott Schreiber clubbed a solo shot in the 2nd inning. Shaver now has 12 home runs on the season, while Schreiber's blast was his second.

The two home runs constituted Quad Cities' offense as once again, they could not convert with runners in scoring position, going 0-10 in these situations.

Edgardo Sandoval allowed a run on five hits and fanned two over five shutout innings. Jairo Solís got through three scoreless innings, but he couldn't close it out. In 3.1 innings, he allowed two runs (the winning run was an inherited runner that was charged to him) on five hits, walked one, and struck out five. Brendan Feldmann couldn't get Solís out of trouble; he got the second out of the 9th but Schreiber couldn't come up with a sharply hit ground ball and it deflected off of him and into right field. Ugh.

Quad Cities has Tuesday off as they travel to Beloit to begin a series there on Wednesday.

Tri-City

The ValleyCats dropped the opener of their series with Connecticut by a final of 6-2. They scored twice in the 5th to tie but the Tigers scored the last four runs of the game.

Their two runs in the 5th came on an RBI single from Enmanuel Valdez and an RBI double from Carlos Machado. Machado finished 2-4 on Sunday.

Brett Daniels started things off by allowing two hits, walking one, and striking out five over three scoreless innings. Shawn Dubin came on for the 4th but only got two outs; he allowed a two-run triple, walked one, and struck out one. Luis de Paula allowed three runs (two inherited runners charged to him), a hit, walked six, and struck out two in 1.2 innings, and Jacob Billingsley pitched the last 2.2 innings. The one run that was charged to him came on a homer; he allowed one other hit, walked one, and struck out one.

Tri-City got a pair of three-run homers on Monday as they won 7-4.

Felipe Tejada allowed two runs on six hits and struck out six in five innings. Juan Pablo Lopez was the first man out of the ValleyCats bullpen and allowed a run on three hits, walked two, and struck out one in three innings. Tim Hardy allowed a run on two hits and struck out two in the 9th.

Ramiro Rodriguez scored the ValleyCats' first run on an error in the 3rd inning. Enmanuel Valdez whacked a three-run homer in the 7th to put them in front and Carlos Machado sealed the deal with a three-run homer in the 9th. Machado, Valdez, and Rodriguez all finished with two hits on the night; Valdez scored twice and Rodriguez came home three times and stole a base (7).

Tri-City and Connecticut will wrap up this series at 7:05 Eastern.

GCL Astros

The Palm Beach Stros nipped the Marlins 2-1 on Sunday as Yeuris Ramirez scored both runs for them. He scored on a Juan Paulino single in the 3rd and then whacked a solo homer in the 5th. Carlos Diaz finished 2-4 with a double.

Fredy Medina allowed a run on a wild pitch, a double, walked one, and struck out four in three innings of work. Jose Bravo came on for five scoreless, allowing three hits and striking out six. Jervic Chavz walked one in a scoreless 9th.

The GCL Astros blanked their complex mates, the Nationals, by a final of 3-0 on Monday. Four pitchers combined to allow two hits in the shutout.

Jayson Schroder allowed just one hit and struck out four over three scoreless innings. Carlos Sierra was the first man out of the bullpen and he walked one and struck out one in two innings. Miguel Figueroa walked two and struck out two in his three innings and Joey Gonzalez worked around a hit in the 9th to close it out, striking out two.

Sean Mendoza opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 6th and came around to score on a Hector Martinez single. Martinez ripped an RBI double in the 8th but got thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple. Deury Carrasco finished 2-2 with a double.

DSL Astros

The Academy fell 9-4 on Monday as they got buried by a five-run 8th from the Dodgers' Robinson team.

Javier Bermúdez homered to lead off the 2nd inning; that was his first career home run. Franny Cobos allowed a hit and struck out three in the first three innings.

We're caught up now.
