Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Friday, June 14, and Saturday, June 15, 2019

Happy New York-Penn League Opening Weekend!

Friday's games first and they'll be a bit shorter than what you're accustomed to seeing. It'll be a short and sweet summary of the game, followed by standout performances from that game. Due to the sheer length of words every time I do one of these mega-recaps, I think I'll punt on stars going forward.

Reno 16, Round Rock 3

Uh... no comment. The Aces teed off on the Round Rock bullpen late to turn this one into a laugher.

Chas McCormick, A.J. Reed, and Jamie Ritchie all hit solo homers for the E-Train. José Urquidy had a bare minimum quality start, allowing three hits (solo homer), walking one, and striking out eight.

Springfield 4, Corpus Christi 2

A one-man show on offense wasn't enough for the Hooks.

Ronnie Dawson went 2-4 and ended up scoring both of Corpus Christi's runs on Friday. He scored on a Seth Beer sacrifice fly in the 1st and then led off the 3rd with a homer. That was Dawson's eighth home run of the season.

Fayetteville 6, Potomac 4

One swing of the bat turned the tide of this game.

Jake Adams clubbed a grand slam in the 5th inning to put the Woodpeckers in the lead. Shawn Dubin shined in relief as he allowed just two hits, walked one, and struck out eight in five innings of work.

Wisconsin 3, Quad Cities 2

The Banditos scored a run in the bottom of the 9th but their rally ended up falling short.

Trey Dawson drove in both Quad Cities runs with RBI singles. Freúdis Nova finished 4-4 with a double. Devin Conn was the first man out of the bullpen and he walked one and struck out two in three innings of work.

Vermont 2, Tri-City 0

The ValleyCats got blanked on NYPL Opening Day. Valente Bellozo was the lone bright spot as he allowed a run on a sac fly, a double, walked two, and struck out eight over 4.1 innings in relief.

DSL Dodgers Bautista 11, DSL Astros 4

This was a 5-4 game until the Dodgers blew it open with six in the 8th inning.

Jesús Liranzo led off the 2nd inning with a home run, his second of the season. Enmanuel Morillo ripped a two-run double in the 4th.

Now, on to Saturday.

Round Rock 14, Tacoma 0

W- Cy Sneed (5-6)
L- Anthony Misiewicz (2-4)

RR home runs: Kyle Tucker 2 (23; 3-run in 1st, solo in 6th), Josh Rojas (1, 9 season; solo in 4th), Chas McCormick (2, 6 season; 2-run in 6th)

The E-Train absolutely steamrolled the Rainiers in the opener of this series. Round Rock scored in every inning except the 7th. Aníbal Sierra was the only person in the lineup who didn't score a run, but he did hit an RBI single in the 3rd inning.

Meanwhile, on the mound, Cy Sneed allowed two hits, walked two, and struck out five over 6.2 shutout innings. Humberto Castellanos completed the shutout by throwing 2.1 perfect innings, striking out one.

Corbin Martin takes on Jon Niese in game two of this series. First pitch is at 6:05.

Springfield 6, Corpus Christi 3

W- Tommy Parsons (1-0)
L- Brett Adcock (1-7)
S- Seth Elledge (3)

CC home runs: Ronnie Dawson (9, solo in 3rd), Carlos Canelón (2, solo in 9th)

Both teams scored in three innings. However, the Cardinals scored two runs in each of the innings in which they scored.

Ronnie Dawson led off the 3rd with a homer and he also laced an RBI double in the 5th. Carlos Canelón led off the 9th with a home run. The two of them, along with Luis Santana and Granden Goetzman, all finished with two hits on the evening.

Brett Adcock pitched 3.2 innings and allowed four runs on five hits (solo homer), walked four, and struck out four. Layne Henderson was the first man out of the Corpus bullpen and the one hit he allowed in his 3.1 innings was a two-run homer. Henderson also walked one and struck out four. Tommy DeJuneas struck out one in a 1-2-3 8th.

Enoli Paredes will make his first Texas League start today. He'll face Austin Warner at 2:10.

Fayetteville 8, Potomac 0

W- Nivaldo Rodríguez (2-3, 5-4 season)
L- Nick Raquet (5-6)

Fayetteville home runs: Scott Schreiber (4, 7 season; solo in 4th)

The Woodpeckers delivered a beatdown to the P-Nats on Saturday night.

J.P. France started things off with four scoreless, allowing four hits, walking three, and striking out six. Willy Collado worked around a walk to throw a scoreless 5th, striking out two. Nivaldo Rodríguez finished things off by allowing a hit, walking two, and striking out seven over the final four innings.

Fayetteville kicked things off with four runs in the 2nd: Miguelangel Sierra hit an RBI single, Jacob Meyers followed with an RBI double, and the two of them scored on a single from Jake Adams. Scott Schreiber smacked a two-run double in the 5th and he came around to score on Scott Manea's single. Schreiber capped off the scoring by launching a homer on the first pitch of the 7th inning. He, Adams, Meyers, and Jonathan Arauz all had two hits on the night.

Jojanse Torres takes on Andrew Warner in the series finale. First pitch is at 1:00 Eastern.

Quad Cities 5, Wisconsin 0 in 6 innings

W- José Bravo (1-1, 3-2 season)
L- Scott Sunitsch (4-7)

QC home runs: None.

This game was called early due to rain.

José Bravo threw his first career complete game and shutout as he allowed just one hit and struck out seven over the six innings.

All five Quad Cities runs came in the 1st inning. David Hensley opened the scoring with an RBI infield single and then an errant pickoff throw allowed Michael Wielansky to score. Freúdis Nova, Orlando Marquez, and Carlos Machado all followed with RBI singles. Marquez and Austin Dennis had two hits apiece.

José Alberto Rivera gets the start in the series finale. He'll face Logan Gillaspie at 1:15.

Vermont 4, Tri-City 1

W- Michael Murray (1-0)
L- Juan Pablo Lopez (0-1)

TC home runs: None.

The ValleyCats were swept in their first series of the new season.

Juan Paulino's sac fly in the 2nd was the lone Tri-City scoring play.

Juan Pablo Lopez went five innings and allowed three runs on seven hits (solo and two-run homers), walked one, and struck out seven. Franny Cobos pitched the final two innings and allowed an unearned run on two hits, walked two, and struck out two.

Guadalupe Chavez was acquired from the Blue Jays for Scott Feldman in 2016 but abruptly retired before the 2017 season. He decided to come back last year and then was loaned to Quintana Roo in the Mexican League. Now, he's back in the Astros system and he'll make his first start for an Astros-affiliated team since August 29, 2016, as Tri-City gets set for their home opener with Staten Island. First pitch is at 6:00 Eastern.

DSL Astros and DSL Marlins was suspended

This game was suspended in the top of the 4th with the Astros leading 1-0. Andrés Monzón drew a bases-loaded walk to open the scoring and then play was halted.

The Astros and Marlins will resume play on Monday.
