WATCH THIS SPACE
I plan to use "this space" to feature players who are currently flying below the radar, but who deserve a closer look.
RHP Valente Bellozo was signed by the Astros out of Mexico on July 3, 2017, but did not pitch his first professional game until almost a year later. In Bellozo's first season with the Dominican Summer League Astros in 2018, he had a 1.74 ERA and a 0.871 WHIP in 14 appearances (51.2 innings). Bellozo actually allowed all 10 of his runs for the season in only two appearances, going scoreless in the other 12 games. Fast forward to 2019 and it appears that Bellozo's success was not a fluke. He leap-frogged the GCL and made his first appearance this year in short season A Tri-City's opener. After six appearances, Bellozo has a 1.46 ERA and a 0.851 WHIP in 24.2 innings of work. He is 19 years old. Watch this space ...
FORMER ASTRO UPDATE
Originally drafted by the Braves in the 8th round in 2008, LHP Brett Oberholtzer came to the Astros via the July 2011 Braves trade that sent Oberholtzer, Paul Clemens, Jordan Schafer and Juan Abreu to Houston in exchange for Michael Bourn and cash. Oberholtzer was subsequently traded to the Phillies, along with Vince Velasquez, Mark Appel, Tom Eshelman and Harold Arauz for Jonathan Arauz and Ken Giles in December 2015. The well traveled Oberholtzer was later claimed off waivers by the Angels and signed with the Blue Jays and Rockies in free agency. He is currently playing for the Somerset Patriots in the independent Atlantic League. In his first 13 starts for the Patriots, Oberholtzer is 7-1 with a 3.45 ERA and a 1.329 WHIP in 73 innings.
