He appeared in 3 games in the 2005 World Series with a 1.69 ERA and a 0.938 WHIP. In December 2007 he was included in a trade with Arizona for Jose Valverde. After pitching for seven different teams in the ensuing years, he came full circle, signing with Houston as a free agent in December 2013. In 46 appearances this season, he is 1-3 with 13 saves, a 3.29 ERA and a 1.220 WHIP.

Three former Astros mark the day as well ~

RHP John Buzhardt (died June 15, 2008 at age 71)
Buzhardt came to Houston from the Orioles in September of 1967 and pitched in only one game in 1967 and an additional 39 games in 1968 at the end of his career. Buzhardt compiled a 4-4 record with a 3.09 ERA and a 1.281 WHIP.

RHP Brett Myers (34)
A first round pick by the Phillies in 1999, Meyers came to Houston as a free agent in January 2010 and pitched for the Astros until the July 2012 trade that sent him to the White Sox. In 102 games (66 starts), he was 21-26 with a 3.77 ERA and a 1.280 WHIP with 19 saves.

2B/SS Tyler Greene (30)
Greene was a first round draft pick by the Cardinals in 2005 and came to Houston in August 2012 in a trade with St. Louis for a PTBNL or cash. In 39 games for Houston in 2012, Greene hit .246/.278/.460. He was released by the Astros in March 2013 and signed as a free agent with the White Sox in April. He is currently playing for the AAA affiliate of the Padres.

Former Astros with birthdays today ~

He appeared in 3 games in the 2005 World Series with a 1.69 ERA and a 0.938 WHIP. In December 2007 he was included in a trade with Arizona for Jose Valverde. He is currently with Miami, his seventh team since leaving the Astros organization.

Happy Birthday - 8/17

2B/SS Tyler Greene (29)
One of our newest Astros, Greene was a first round draft pick by the Cardinals in 2005 and came to Houston on August 9th in a trade with St. Louis for a PTBNL or cash. In 77 games for St. Louis in 2012, Greene hit .218/.272/.358. In six games with Houston, he is hitting .350/.350/.600.

LHP Christopher Lee (20)
Drafted by Houston in the fourth round in 2011 and originally from Tampa, Florida, Lee was assigned from Greeneville to the GCL recently. He hasn't pitched in three weeks which leads me to believe there may be an injury involved. In five appearances (three starts) for Greeneville, Lee was 1-2 with a 11.42 ERA and a 2.538 WHIP.

OF Emilio King (23)
King was signed by the Astros as an NDFA out of the Dominican Republic prior to the 2006 season. King has struggled somewhat this season and has been unable to recreate his solid 2011 Lexington season when he hit .293/.332/.439. He is now with the Tri-City club and appears to be heating up. In his last 10 games, he is hitting .314/.314/.714. For the season, he is hitting .190/.246/.322.

Another Trade And A Waiver Claim

Jeff Luhnow has been a very busy boy. Remind me not to take any more naps until August 1st. After yesterday's 10-player Mega Trade, we will have four more new Astros to get to know, three from a trade and another player from a waiver claim.

Closer Brett Myers was traded to the Chicago White Sox for LHP Blair Walters, RHP Matt Heidenreich and a PTBNL.

Walters was listed by Baseball America as the 26th top prospect in the White Sox system going in to 2012. He is said to have a low 90's fastball with natural sink and a combo cutter/slider with late bite that baffles hitters. He was the Pioneer League Pitcher of the Year in 2011. He excelled in 13 starts for A-level team Kannapolis in the Sally League, but hasn't done as well since his promotion to the Hi-A Winston-Salem team. He will be assigned to Hi-A Lancaster.

Heidenreich started the season with the Hi-A Winston-Salem team where he did very nicely in 15 starts and was named to the Carolina League All-Star team. He was recently promoted to Birmingham in the Southern League and had one very good start, one pretty good start and one extremely forgettable start. He was ranked by Baseball America as the 27th top prospect in the White Sox system before the 2011 season, but fell off the 2012 list. He will report to Corpus Christi.

RHP Mark Hamburger was claimed off waivers from San Diego and will report to AAA Oklahoma City. Hamburger has struggled to be effective this season, but he was 7-4 with a 3.88 ERA and a 1.181 WHIP at AAA last season when he was in the Rangers organization.

Saving Brett Myers from Bad Juju

So, I'm on my computer doing this and that and the doorbell rings.  I glance out the front window and it's the UPS truck.  I rack my brain and I can't think of a thing that I've ordered recently so I open the door and look down and there's this largish package there.  Then it dawns on me that it's the Astros bobbleheads I pre-ordered as a season ticket holder this year.  (I love me a good bobblehead and I don't like standing in line to get them so I paid for them, sucker that I am.)

I really wanted to get the Brett Myers one out and I was having a terrible time getting it out of the box.  I finally got it out of the box and then I couldn't separate the plastic packaging.  It just didn't want to come apart.  I finally forced it apart and then I see something drop and I hear this click as something hits the floor.  It's Brett Myers' arm.  His right arm.  This cannot be a good omen.

I immediately get out the superglue because I'm trying to erase the bad juju of having Brett Myers' right arm fall off on my watch.  I put the dab of superglue on his arm, place it in his sleeve and count to 20 while the superglue takes.  Then I let the arm go and it's in place.  Phew.  It's all good.  I didn't break Brett Myers.  No harm. No foul.

And then I put it down.  Or I tried to.  A tiny speck of superglue had dropped on to my right ring finger and it was now attached to the base of Brett Myers.  Every household absolutely must have fingernail polish remover in their inventory.  I don't care if you're a guy and you've never painted your nails in your life.  Fingernail polish remover is the only thing that came between me and a very uncomfortable evening.

Brett is now happily ensconced on the Astros memorabilia shelf with the other bobbleheads and signed balls.  I think I'll wait until tomorrow to open the rest.

Yeah, Brett, I know how you feel!

Happy Birthday - 8/17

OF Emilio King (22)
Born in the Dominican Republic, King was acquired by the Astros as an NDFA prior to the 2006 season. For the season at Lexington, he is hitting .268. His production has tapered off this season, with a .346 BA before the All-Star break and a .204 BA after the break.

LHP Christopher Lee (19)
Drafted in the 4th Round in 2011 and originally from Tampa, FL, Lee is still trying to find his way for the Greeneville Astros. He is 1-3 with a 6.63 ERA and 1.91 WHIP in 10 starts.

It is also Brett Myer's 31st birthday today.
