WATCH THIS SPACE

I plan to use "this space" to feature players who are currently flying below the radar, but who deserve a look.

Nivaldo Rodriguez - July 2018

RHP Nivaldo Rodriguez
Rodriguez signed with the Astros out of Venezuela in June 2016. Never considered a top prospect, Rodriguez has nonetheless continued a slow, steady and successful climb up the ladder. After compiling a 4-1 record with a 2.91 ERA and a 1.042 WHIP in 14 appearances (7 starts) for Tri-City in 2018 (13 BB:50 K in 55.2 IP), he has gotten off to a VERY good start with his first appearance at Quad Cities in 2019, allowing one hit, zero runs, one walk and striking out eight in his first five-inning start. He will be 22 later this month.

FORMER ASTRO UPDATE

Originally drafted by the Astros in the 8th round in 2013 out of Orange Lutheran High School (CA), OF Jason Martin was included in the January 2018 trade to the Pirates for RHP Gerrit Cole. After hitting .270/.343/.443/.786 in 580 minor league games, Martin made his major league debut Saturday and this happened ...

Congratulations!! Martin is the 49th player I've interviewed who has made his major league debut. Who will be #50?

PHOTO OF THE WEEK

And finally, in an homage (nice word for ripoff) to Astros County's musical selection, I plan to start bringing you random pictorial selections ...

ROSTER MOVES/TRANSACTIONS

I certainly don't need to inform my readers about the big weekend trade with Pittsburgh to obtain RHP Garrit Cole in exchange for RHP Joe MusgroveRHP Michael Feliz3B Colin Moran and OF Jason Martin. Baseball America has a very good post on what the Astros gained and what they lost from a talent perspective. And J.J. Cooper of BA weighs in with some additional thoughts on Moran. MLB Pipeline has updated their 2017 postseason prospect rankings to remove Moran (#5) and Martin (#15). RHP Jairo Solis has been slotted in at #21 and OF Ronnie Dawson has been added at #30.

19-year old Joe Musgrove - August 2012

What these various pundits don't weigh in on is what else the Astros fans are losing. If you are on twitter, you might have seen many tweets of praise for Joe Musgrove ...

Any fan who has ever had the opportunity to interact with Joe from the low minors all the way up to Houston will know what a special person he is, generous with his time and his heart. I first interviewed Joe when he was only 19 and I immediately fell in love with him. He was sweet and charming ... a gentle giant like my father. Every time I spoke with him from that point forward just cemented my impression of him as a really special person. He and his wonderful family will be missed. Best of luck to Joe, Michael, Colin and Jason as they continue their baseball journeys!

One additional note ... as of 1/14, the Astros 40-man roster stands at 38 with the addition of Cole and the subtraction of Musgrove, Feliz and Moran. I do not think it was a coincidence that Astros General Manager Luhnow's trade allows him much more flexibility to identify and patch holes where the team sees them as the season approaches. Had he given up top prospects not on the 40-man roster, Luhnow would still have had his hands tied with a full roster and much less room to maneuver.

The cumulative Astros offseason transaction list can be found here.

FALL AND WINTER LEAGUE UPDATES

Since most of the Astros minor leaguers are finished with winter ball, I'll only be including the active players here. For the final stats for players having participated in the Arizona Fall League, Venezuelan Winter League, Mexican Pacific Winter League and the Dominican Winter League, please visit my Farm Report from 1/1.

AUSTRALIAN BASEBALL LEAGUE (ABL)

MiLB.com is currently down for maintenance. Therefore, I cannot currently access the specifics of Ayarza's last four games, but it appears that he continues to have a good amount of success with the Bite. The ABL regular season will conclude on January 27th.

PUERTO RICAN WINTER LEAGUE (LBPRC)

Again, I can't access the boxscores for detailed information at this time, but Sierra lowered his ERA over three points in one appearance and Castro had his first and only at-bat (so far) of his winter campaign resulting in an RBI double.

NEWS AND LINKS

Baseball America gave us an early look at the Top 10 Astros prospect list as the Gerrit Cole trade loomed. Colin Moran's #9 ranking and (according to J.J. Cooper) Jason Martin's #19 ranking look to be in the upcoming BA Prospect Handbook as their press deadline came and went last week. Also according to Cooper, an Astros prospect will be gracing the cover. I will assume that player to be Forrest Whitley since they have him ranked as the top Astros prospect.

In case you missed it, I started a "Beyond the Top 30" series, looking at both those Astros players who are considered Top 30 prospects and others at each position who may not be top talents (or may grow to be), but will be interesting to watch nonetheless. So far we've looked at ...

Fresno home runs: Jack Mayfield (5, 19 season; solo in 2nd), Tony Kemp (10, solo in 6th), A.J. Reed (24, solo in 9th)

The Grizzlies got three solo shots.... but not much else on offense as they couldn't quite come back from an early 4-0 deficit. A.J. Reed went 2-4 on the night.

Dean Deetz went 2 innings and allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 4 hits, walked 3, and struck out 4. Jacob Dorris and Ashur Tolliver pitched 3 innings apiece; Dorris allowed a hit and fanned 3, while Tolliver allowed a run on 2 hits, walked 4, and struck out 3. CC home runs: Rico Noel (1, solo in 2nd), Dexture McCall (5, 9 season; solo in 5th), Arturo Michelena (1, 2-run in 7th), Jason Martin (10, 17 season; walk-off grand slam in 9th)

The Hooks scored 6 in the bottom of the 9th to steal one from right under the Drillers.

Framber Valdez went 4.1 innings and allowed 3 runs (1 inherited runner charged to him) on 5 hits, walked 2, and struck out 6. Cy Sneed was the first man out of the Corpus bullpen and went 3 innings, allowing 4 runs on 4 hits, walking 2, and striking out 4. Ryan Thompson allowed a hit and fanned 2 over 1.2 scoreless.

Both teams scored a run in the 2nd inning; Corpus got theirs on Rico Noel's first homer as a member of the Astros organization. Dex McCall launched a solo homer in the 5th, and Arturo Michelena hit a 2-run homer in the 7th that tied the game at 4. The Drillers got 3 in the 8th to re-take the lead.

Ryne Birk led off the bottom of the 9th with a single, which prompted Tulsa to make a pitching change. McCall greeted new Drillers pitcher Shea Spitzbarth with a single. Michelena went down on strikes, but Colin Walsh hit an RBI single to cut the Tulsa lead to 7-5. Tony Nuñez singled to load the bases for Kyle Tucker, who hit a sac fly to bring Corpus to within a run. Jamie Ritchie legged out an infield single to re-load the bases for Jason Martin, who sent the Whataburger Field crowd home in ecstasy with a walk-off grand slam while down to his last strike. Martin and McCall both finished with 3 hits on the evening.

Franklin Perez will take on Mitchell White in the series finale. First pitch is at 7:05.

Buies Creek 3, Salem 2

W- Elieser Hernandez (4-3, 5-3 season)
L- Matthew Gorst (0-1)

BC home runs: Jake Rogers (10, 16 season; solo in 4th)

The Carolina Stros got a run in the 9th to break a 2-2 tie.

Anthony Hermelyn hit a pair of RBI singles; he opened the scoring in the 2nd and drove in the go-ahead run in the 9th. Jake Rogers also went 2-3 and smacked a homer to begin the 4th. Taylor Jones went 2-4 with a double and scored what turned out to be the winning run.

Forrest Whitley went 4 innings and allowed 2 runs on 6 hits (solo homer), walked 3, and struck out 7. It was not his sharpest performance as he also uncorked 4 wild pitches. Erasmo Pinales worked around a hit to throw a scoreless 5th, striking out 1. Elieser Hernandez allowed 3 hits and struck out 1 over the final 4 innings.

Cionel Perez will start the series finale. He'll go up against former Aggie Matt Kent at 7:05 Eastern.

Quad Cities was off

The Banditos will begin a 4-game series in Cedar Rapids tonight at 6:35. Carlos Sanabria will take on Tyler Watson.

Tri-City 7, Lowell 2

W- Ben Smith (5-2)
L- Nick Duron (2-4)
S- Corbin Martin (1)

TC home runs: Jonathan Arauz (1, 2-run in 1st), Adrian Tovalin (4, 8 season; 2-run in 3rd)

The ValleyCats got back to the .500 mark thanks to a pair of 2-run blasts and a dominating outing from Corbin Martin to end the game.

Brandon Bielak allowed 2 runs on 4 hits and struck out 3 in 4 innings. Ben Smith worked around a couple of walks to throw a scoreless 5th, striking out 2. Martin shut things down for the final 4 innings, walking 1 and striking out 9 to record his first save as a pro.

J.J. Matijevic hit a one-out single in the 1st and Jonathan Arauz opened the scoring by launching a homer. Adrian Tovalin whacked a 2-run homer of his own in the 3rd inning. Tovalin scored on a wild pitch in the 6th and Kyle Davis added an RBI single not long after. Tovalin scored the last run of the evening in the 7th on another wild pitch that Colton Shaver stole 2nd on. Arauz (2-R HR, 2 R), Tovalin (2-R HR, 3 R), and Gabriel Bracamonte (3B, R) all finished with 2 hits on the night.

J.B. Bukauskas makes his Tri-City debut in the series finale. First pitch is at 6:35 Eastern.

Elizabethton 6, Greeneville 1

W- Edwar Colina (3-3)
L- Jheyson Caraballo (1-2)

Greeneville home runs: None.

The Twins scored twice... in three consecutive innings to take the opener.

Jheyson Caraballo and Gerardo Bojorquez pitched 4 innings apiece. Caraballo allowed 4 runs on 7 hits (2-run homer), walked 2, and struck out 5. Bojorquez allowed 2 runs on 5 hits and fanned 5.

Jose Benjamin spoiled the shutout with a pinch-hit RBI single in the 8th inning. Patrick Mathis went 2-4 with a double.

Hansel Paulino takes on Brusdar Graterol in game 2. First pitch is at 7:00 Eastern.

GCL Astros 4, GCL Nationals 0

W- Maikel Sepulveda (5-3)
L- Tomás Alastre (2-1)

GCL home runs: Juan Piñeda (2, 3 season; solo in 3rd)

The Palm Beach Stros shut out their complex mates on Wednesday, holding the Nationals to 4 hits.

Maikel Sepulveda allowed 3 hits and struck out 2 in 5 innings. Austin Kerns was the first man out of the GCLstros bullpen and went 3 innings, allowing a hit, walking 1, and striking out 1. Brendan Feldmann struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 9th to complete the shutout.

Carlos Machado went 2-4 and opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 1st inning. After Machado's single, Angel Tejeda scored on Trent Woodward's groundout. Juan Piñeda smacked a homer to start the 3rd. César Cortez walked to lead off the 4th, stole 2nd, then scored on two straight wild pitches. Piñeda finished 3-4 on the day.

DSL Astros Blue 16, DSL Braves 2

W- Jose Antonio Hernandez (3-2)
L- Luis De Jesus (2-4)

Blue home runs: None.

Team Blue only had one extra-base hit, but they still managed to score 16 runs thanks to 8 walks, 13 hits, and 5 Braves errors.

Antonio Pujols allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4 in 4 innings. Jose Antonio Hernandez was the first man out of the Blue team bullpen and went 3 innings, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits, walking 1, and striking out 2. Christopher Javier walked 1 and fanned 3 over the last 2 innings.

DSL Astros Orange 3, DSL Indians/Brewers 0

L- Henry Medina (3-4)
S- Cristofer Melendez (2)

Sean Mendoza went 3-5, while Carrasco and Jose Castillo both went 2-4. Carrasco had 2 steals, giving him 21 on the year.

Wender Oberto allowed 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4 in 3 innings. Fredy Medina tagged in for 4 no-hit innings, walking 2 and striking out 6. Cristofer Melendez allowed a hit and struck out 2 in the final 2 innings for the save.

Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Saturday, August 5, 2017

Iowa 6, Fresno 1

W- Felix Peña (2-1)
L- Rogelio Armenteros (5-1, 7-4 season)

Fresno home runs: None.

After the Grizzlies got on the board first, the I-Cubs swiftly seized control with 4 runs in the 5th.

Rogelio Armenteros wasn't bad in his 5+ innings, but he probably deserved a better ending to his evening than allowing a 2-run homer in the 6th to the last man he faced, which also put Iowa in the lead. The other 4 hits that Armenteros allowed were all singles; he also walked 2 and struck out 9. Ashur Tolliver (6th), Jordan Jankowski (7th), and Jumbo Diaz (8th) all threw an inning out of the bullpen. Tolliver and Jankowski both allowed 2 runs on 2 hits; Jankowski also walked and struck out a batter. Jumbo struck out 1 in a 1-2-3 inning.

Jack Mayfield scored Fresno's only run when Alejandro Garcia beat out a double play attempt in the 5th inning. The Grizzlies only had 4 hits in this game.

David Martinez will start the series finale, and he'll take on Eddie Butler at 1:08.

Frisco 4, Corpus Christi 1

W- Tyson Ross (1-0)
L- Alex Winkelman (1-6, 3-6 season)
S- Nick Gardewine (4)

CC home runs: None.

Hard to win a game when only two players in the lineup are the entire offense.

Ryne Birk went 2-3 with an RBI single in the 7th that accounted for the Hooks' only run. Jason Martin also had 2 hits and scored that one run. Together, they provided all of Corpus Christi's offensive production on Saturday.

Alex Winkelman and Akeem Bostick threw 4 innings apiece. Winkelman allowed 3 runs on 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3, while Bostick allowed 3 hits, walked 3, and struck out 4.

Yoanys Quiala starts the series finale. First pitch is at 7:05.

Buies Creek 7, Carolina 5

W- Ryan Hartman (2-3, 5-4 season)
L- Kodi Medeiros (4-9)
S- Sean Stutzman (3)

BC home runs: None.

The Carolina Stros only scored in one inning, but it turned out to be enough to get them the win.

Ryan Hartman went 5.1 innings and allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits, walked 3, and struck out 2. All three runs that were charged to him were inherited runners that scored. Carlos Sierra was the first man out of the Buies Creek bullpen and allowed 2 runs of his own on 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3 in 2.2 innings. Sean Stutzman threw a 1-2-3 9th to get the save, striking out 1.

All 7 Buies Creek runs came in the 4th inning. Stephen Wrenn and Yordan Alvarez both singled to start the inning and Jake Rogers followed with a 2-run triple to open the scoring. Rogers came home on a Randy César single. César moved over on Carmen Benedetti's single and scored on Rodrigo Ayarza's single. Ayarza's RBI single was the first of four such plays in a row; Myles Straw, Wrenn, and Alvarez all followed with RBI singles of their own.

Wrenn, Alvarez, and César all finished with 2 hits on the evening. Rogers' triple was Buies Creek's only extra-base hit of the game, so they essentially subjected the Mudcats to a thousand cuts in that huge 4th inning.

Hector Perez will face Conor Harber in the series finale. First pitch is at 2:00 Eastern.

Quad Cities 8, Beloit 2

W- Ronel Blanco (5-3, 5-4 season)
L- Matt Milburn (6-9)
S- Patrick Sandoval (1)

QC home runs: Daz Cameron (12, 2-run in 3rd)

The Banditos cruised to the victory on Saturday with a 5-run 3rd and an outstanding performance on the hill.

Ronel Blanco walked 3 and struck out 3 over 5 no-hit innings. The Snappers spoiled the no-hitter and the shutout with a couple of runs on 3 hits off Patrick Sandoval in the 9th. Sandoval struck out 6 in his 4 innings of work.

All 5 Quad Cities runs in the 3rd came with two outs. Chas McCormick led it off with a double. Osvaldo Duarte flew out and Ronnie Dawson struck out to jeopardize things a little. Chuckie Robinson came through with an RBI single to open the scoring, and then Troy Sieber ripped a double to bring him in. Abraham Toro-Hernandez followed with an RBI triple, and Daz Cameron landed the big blow by whacking a 2-run homer. Dawson walked to start the 5th, made his way to 3rd thanks to a couple of wild pitches, and came home on a single from Sieber. Dawson finished 2-3 and hit a 2-run single in the 6th. He's now on a 14-game hitting streak. Daz went 2-4 on the night, while Robinson (RBI, R) and Sieber (2B, 2 RBI, R) both finished 3-4.

Abdiel Saldaña takes on Xavier Altamirano at 1:15.

Aberdeen 3, Tri-City 2

W- Josh Keaton (1-2)
L- Tyler Ivey (0-3)
S- William Reed Hayes (4)

TC home runs: None.

The ValleyCats got 2 in the 6th to take the lead... only to see the Ironbirds regain control with a couple of their own in the 7th.

Those two runs came when Jake Meyers scored on a wild pitch and Bryan De La Cruz came home on a balk. Kyle Davis went 2-4 with a double.

Carlos Hiraldo went 5 innings and allowed a run on 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1. Tyler Ivey was the first man out of the bullpen and went 3 innings, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits, walking 1, and striking out 6. Diogenes Almengo struck out 1 in a scoreless 9th inning.

Matt Ruppenthal starts game 2. First pitch is at 5:00 Eastern.

Greeneville 7, Danville 4

W- Cole Watts (2-3)
L- Jesús Heredia (1-3)

Greeneville home runs: None.

The Appy Astros avoided the sweep behind a 5-run 6th inning that put them up 7-3.

Jose Benjamin opened the scoring with a 2-run single in the 1st inning. This was their only scoring play until that big 6th.

Frankeny Fernandez started things off by drawing a walk. He'd score the tying run on an error, and then Greeneville had the bases loaded, which they scored their other four runs off of. Joan Mauricio hit an RBI single, Wilson Amador added a sac fly, and Cody Bohanek and Gilberto Celestino chipped in with RBI singles of their own. Bohanek and Benjamin both finished with 2 hits on the evening, while Amador stole a couple of bases (13). Celestino extended his hitting streak to 8 games with that RBI single.

Hansel Paulino went 3 innings and allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, walked 2, and struck out 4. Willy Collado came on for 2 innings and allowed a run on a double, walked 2, and struck out 3. Cole Watts pitched the last 4 innings and allowed a run on a solo homer, 2 other hits, and struck out 4.

Greeneville will begin a 3-game series with Burlington at 6:00 Eastern.

GCL Cardinals 10, GCL Astros 5

W- Brian Pirela (2-3)
L- Tanner Duncan (1-2)

GCL home runs: Nathan Perry (2, solo in 5th)

Three big innings from the Cardinals doomed the Palm Beach Stros on Saturday.

Nathan Perry put the GCLstros on the board with a solo homer in the 5th inning. Carlos Machado hit an RBI single in the 6th and later pulled off a double steal with Wander Franco. An errant throw allowed Franco to come home with another run. Juan Piñeda ripped an RBI double in the 8th and Andres Santana hit an RBI single in the 9th. Santana and Enmanuel Valdez (2B, R, 2 SB) had 2 hits apiece.

Tanner Duncan went 4 innings and allowed 3 runs on 4 hits and struck out 4. Matt Merrill pitched the 5th but only got two outs; he allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 4 hits and walked 1. Diosward Gonzalez was next; he allowed 3 runs (3 earned) on 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2 in 2.1 innings. Chauncey Nuñez allowed a hit and struck out 2 in a scoreless 9th.

DSL Royals 4, DSL Astros Blue 2

W- Adriam Castillo (3-0)
L- Kilvio Peralta (0-1)
S- Adrian Alcantara (3)

Blue home runs: None.

Wilyer Abreu went 2-4 and his 2-run single in the 6th was the Blue team's only scoring play.

Kilvio Peralta allowed 2 runs on 2 hits in 2 innings. Freylin Garcia followed with 5 innings, allowing a run on 4 hits and striking out 5. Luis Garcia and Jervic Chavez pitched an inning apiece; Garcia allowed a run on 2 hits and walked 1 in the 8th, while Chavez worked around an error to throw a scoreless 9th.

DSL Pirates 7, DSL Astros Orange 1 in 8 innings

W- Noe Toribio (2-2)
L- Jesus Bernaez (1-4)

Orange home runs: None.

This game was called due to severe weather just before the 9th inning began.

Michael Garcia scored the Orange team's only run on a groundout in the 8th. Fildex Perfecto went 3-3.

Miguel Matos allowed a hit and struck out 6 over the last 4 innings of this game.

Results for Tuesday, August 1, 2017

Day games galore to start off a new month.

Omaha 9, Fresno 1

W- Jake Junis (3-5)
L- Kent Emanuel (1-1, 6-6 season)
S- Pedro Fernandez (1)

Fresno home runs: Tony Kemp (9, solo in 3rd)

Rough start to a new month for the Grizz.

Tony Kemp homered to lead off the 3rd for Fresno's only run; it was also their only extra-base hit of the day. Drew Ferguson pinch-hit for Kemp in the 8th and singled in his first AAA plate appearance.

Kent Emanuel... had a tough day, and I'll leave it at that. The one hit that Jacob Dorris allowed in his 2 innings was a solo homer to Cheslor Cuthbert in the 6th. Dorris struck out 1 in his outing. Ashur Tolliver worked around a hit to throw a scoreless 8th, striking out 1.

Fresno has Wednesday off. They'll begin a 4-game series in Iowa on Thursday.

San Antonio 7, Corpus Christi 3

W- Eric Lauer (3-2)
L- Framber Valdez (4-3, 6-6 season)

L- Conor Harber (2-7)
S- Sean Stutzman (1)

BC home runs: Anthony Hermelyn (2, solo in 4th), Stephen Wrenn (4, 7 season; 2-run in 7th)

The Mudcats managed to tie the game at 3, but Stephen Wrenn's 2-run homer in the 7th put Buies Creek back in front, and that blast proved to be the difference.

Forrest Whitley allowed 2 runs on a double, one other hit, walked 2, and struck out 7 in 3.2 innings. Erasmo Pinales was the first man out of the Astros bullpen and went 3.1 innings. He allowed a run on a strikeout that got away from Jake Rogers. As Rogers threw down to 1B to complete the out, the man on 3rd dashed home and scored. The Banditos outscored the Lugnuts 36-9 in taking 2 of 3 in this series; they scored in all but one inning and pounded out 15 hits on Friday.

Matijevic, and Papierski walked to load the bases for Connor MacDonald, who ripped a 2-run double. Payano tripled to lead off the 6th and scored on Arauz's double, and Matijevic capped off the evening with a solo shot in the 8th.

Payano finished a home run shy of the cycle; had he done so, he would have completed the cycle in order. Matijevic (solo HR, 3 R) and Papierski (2B, RBI) both finished 2-3 on the night.

Dallas Keuchel is scheduled to make his second rehab start with the ValleyCats tonight. I'm just going off what Todd Kalas said on the Astros broadcast last night.
