Astros Minor League Recaps

Thursday's Games

Oklahoma City over Iowa 9-8 in 12 innings
The RedHawks re-took first place in this extra inning affair as seven pitchers took the mound for the team despite starter Brad Peacock (2H 0BB 4SO) gifting the 'Hawks with a 6-1 lead when he left after six innings. The next three innings were a little dicey as Kevin Chapman, Josh Zeid, Alex Sogard and Rhiner Cruz gave up seven runs before Jose Valdez (2.2IP 1H 1BB 2SO) came in with one out and bases loaded in the ninth to stop the bleeding. Eric Berger pitched a scoreless 12th for the win. OKC put up one run in the second on a Brandon Laird (3x4 2BB 3R) home run and then added on five in the fourth with a Marc Krauss (2x4 BB R) RBI double, a Carlos Perez bases clearing double and a Robbie Grossman sac bunt scoring Perez. A Brett Wallace RBI triple and Justin Maxwell (2x5 R) RBI single in the seventh pushed two more across. Carlos Perez was the man of the hour with a walk-off RBI single in the 12th to give the 'Hawks the "W." Jake Elmore was two-for-five with a walk, stolen base and run scored. Andy Simunic and Jonathan Villar swiped bags as well with Villar pilfering two.

Corpus Christi over Frisco 7-1
Nick Tropeano (5IP 5H 0BB 3SO) got the start and the win as he allowed the only Frisco run on a solo home run before giving way to Bobby Doran (1H 0BB 3SO) for four scoreless frames. Kiké Hernandez' (2x4 BB) RBI single in the fifth is the only run that didn't score via the long ball on Thursday. Michael Burgess (2x5 2B) got the party started with a two-run homer in the second; Jon Singleton and Erik Castro (2x4 2B BB 2R) added solo shots in the third; and Singleton tacked on a two-run blast in the fourth for good measure. Jonathan Meyer was two-for-five with a double and a run scored.

Lake Elsinore over Lancaster 12-3
With three games left to play, Lancaster's magic number to win the first half is down to two thanks to an Inland Empire loss. Brady Rodgers struggled mightily, allowing seven runs on six hits in only one and two-thirds innings and Chris Devenski didn't fare any better, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits in only a third of an inning. The good news is that Tommy Shirley (2IP 4SO) and Cameron Lamb (2.2IP 3SO) both had perfect outings out of the 'pen. Lamb inherited bases loaded with one out in the sixth and induced a double play to get Devenski off the hook for any more runs. The 'Hawks were down 12-0 going into the seventh before getting a two-RBI double from Chris Epps and an RBI single from Preston Tucker (2x4) in the eighth. Matt Duffy was three-for-three with a walk and scored a run.

Quad Cities over Cedar Rapids 9-8
What a comeback to win out over first place Cedar Rapids! Starter Jordan Jankowski's (2H 1BB 5SO) only run allowed through four innings came via a solo home run. Juan Minaya was charged with three runs in three and a third innings with two of those coming across under John Neely's watch. Neely had a very tough outing, allowing four runs (two earned) of his own in only one third of an inning. Mitch Lambson ended the pain and suffering and was rewarded with the win. Despite giving up seven runs in the eighth inning to turn a 4-1 lead into an 8-4 deficit, the River Bandits managed to put up five runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to get the comeback win. Carlos Correa (2x5 R), Jesse Wierzbicki (2x5 2B 2RBI R), Brian Blasik (3x4 BB RBI R SB) and Jobduan Morales (1x4 2B BB 2RBI) all had productive nights.

DSL Astros over DSL Indians 8-4
Elieser Hernandez (4H 1R 1BB 5SO) pitched a very strong five innings for the win and was followed by one inning of perfect relief from lefty Cristhofer Santamaria. Rayderson Chevalier (one of my other favorite names) got the save despite allowing three earned runs in his three innings. Kristian Trompiz was a home run short of the cycle and drove in three runs. Hector Roa and Jesus Bermejo also doubled in the game.

Player of the Day: Three-for-three, two walks, two home runs, three RBI, two runs scored? Yeah, Jon Homerton ... you da man!

Pitcher of the Day: I really need to give the relief corps more credit, particularly those who can serve as stoppers when things start getting out of control. Jose Valdez did a terrific job extricating the RedHawks from a bases loaded jam and giving them the opportunity to regain not only the lead, but first place in their division.

Astros Minor League Recaps

Monday's Games

Oklahoma City over Nashville 9-8
It did not look good for Oklahoma City as Nashville took a 7-1 lead in the top of the second, but the RedHawks battled back with big innings in the second and the fourth to make this a tight one. Ross Seaton was charged with all seven of those runs and was chased after only one and two-thirds innings. Kyle Hallock then came on to do a beautiful job in four and a third innings. He stranded the two runners he inherited from Seaton and then went on to allow only two hits (both singles) and two walks in a scoreless outing and was rewarded with his first win with the 'Hawks. Eric Berger pitched a scoreless seventh, but allowed one run and bases loaded in the eighth without recording an out and was bailed out by Jose Valdez. Valdez stranded the runners and then pitched a perfect ninth as well for the save.

The RedHawks put up a run in the first inning on a Brett Wallace (2x5) RBI single and added three more in the second on a Jason Jaramillo RBI double and a Trevor Crowe (3x3 2BB 4R 3SB) two-run home run. Not to be outdone, my man Elmore (2x4 BB SB) hit his own two-run shot in the fourth and was followed by back-to-back triples from Jimmy Paredes (2x5) and Marc Krauss. Jonathan Villar (3x4 BB 2SB) finished things off in the fourth with an RBI single. Elmore then added an RBI triple to his resume in the fifth, a run which proved to be the difference maker in the game.

Frisco over Corpus Christi 4-2
Matt Heidenreich had his best outing since his first one, allowing only one unearned run in four innings on four hits. Pat Urckfitz bridged the gap to the tandem, issuing a lead-off double that quickly turned into a run, and was followed by R.J. Alaniz. Alaniz gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out two in his three innings. The Hooks got on the board with a two-run home run from George Springer in the third inning, his eighth of the season, but that was all they could muster offensively. Domingo Santana and Michael Burgess were both two-for-four for the day with Santana and Ben Orloff both contributing doubles to the effort.

Lancaster - Off Day

Quad Cities over Great Lakes 6-1
Brian Holmes (5IP 2H 1R/0ER 2BB 10SO) and Jordan Jankowski (4IP 2H 0R 0BB 4SO) combined to put the hurt on the Loons. All but one of the 14 strikeouts recorded by the duo were swinging strikeouts. The Quad Cities offense wasn't overwhelming in this one as they only recorded one extra-base hit, an RBI double from Jobduan Morales, but they just kept the line moving. Teoscar Hernandez and Joe Sclafani (RBI single) were both two-for-four, and Terrell Joyce contributed a two RBI single to the mix.

Player of the Day: Trevor Crowe not only went three-for-three, he also walked twice, stole three bases, drove in two and scored four times!

Pitcher of the Day: I really can't choose today because there were too many excellent outings. I'll make it a tie between Kyle Hallock and Brian Holmes with a tip of the cap to Jordan Jankowski and Jose Valdez. They are all worthy of the honor.

Happy Birthday - 1/22

Happy Birthday to ~

RHP Mike Hauschild (23)
A 33rd round pick out of the University of Dayton in 2012, Hauschild had a very good debut season at Greeneville. In 19 appearances, he was 2-2 with a 1.78 ERA and a 1.022 WHIP. Hauschild struck out 39 in 30 and a third innings while walking only nine. He is an extreme ground ball pitcher with a 5.25 GO/AO for 2012.

RHP Jose Montero (20)
Signed by the Astros as a NDFA out of the Dominican Republic in 2010, Montero did not pitch in 2011. In 2012, he pitched only 19 and two-thirds innings for the GCL Astros. In 13 appearances, he had a 5.03 ERA and a 1.627 WHIP.

RHP Jose Valdez (30)
Originally signed as a NDFA out of the Dominican Republic by the Yankees in 2000, Valdez came to Houston via free agency in 2009. Valdez had a terrific season at Oklahoma City in 2012 until injuries derailed him. In April, May, July and August, he had a 2.84 ERA and a 1.237 WHIP. In June, when he went down with injuries, he had a 19.06 ERA and a 3.176 WHIP. With Houston, he had a 2.25 ERA and a 1.667 WHIP in 12 appearances. He recently re-signed with the Astros but is no longer on the 40-man roster.

Former Astros with birthdays today ~

OF Leon Roberts (62)
A tenth round draft pick for Detroit in 1972, Roberts came to Houston in a December 1975 trade with the Tigers and played for the Astros the following two seasons. In 106 games for the Astros, he hit .267/.324/.405. In 2012, he was the hitting coach for Oklahoma City, a role he is slated to reprise in 2013.

OF Javier Ortiz (50)
Originally drafted by the Rangers in the first round in 1983, Ortiz came to Houston in a July 1989 trade with the Dodgers. In 77 games for the Astros in 1990 and 1991, he hit .275/.374/.394.

Roster Moves

According to Brian McTaggart, the Astros have re-signed RHP Edgar Gonzalez and RHP Jose Valdez to minor league contracts with invitations to Spring Training. I have updated my master off-season transaction list to reflect these changes.

I really don't have any strong feelings about Gonzalez one way or the other, but I am glad to see Jose Valdez re-signed. His numbers at Oklahoma City really aren't indicative of the season that he had, as a mid-season injury and struggles related to that injury inflated his numbers significantly. Before and after, he had a solid season out of the bullpen in Oklahoma City, and that translated into an effective stint in Houston following a September call-up.

Roster Moves

In addition to yesterday afternoon's news that Jordan Schafer has been claimed off waivers by Atlanta, the Astros announced several other moves last night.

RHP Kyle Weiland was outrighted to Oklahoma City. LHP Fernando Abad, LHP Sergio Escalona, RHP Edgar Gonzalez and RHP Jose Valdez were also outrighted to Oklahoma City but are unrestricted free agents. (It was also noted that IF Matt Downs, who had been removed from the 40-man roster a couple days ago, is an unrestricted free agent as well.) Only two of these players were on the 40-man roster since Weiland and Escalona were on the 60-day DL so this effectively brought the running total down to 34 on the 40-man roster.

Two players, however, were added to the 40-man roster bring it back up to 36. RHP Sam Demel and 2B/SS Jake Elmore were claimed off waivers from the Diamondbacks. The 25-year old Demel, a third round draft pick by Oakland in 2007 and a native of Channelview, Texas, had significant major league experience with the Diamondbacks in 2010 and 2011, but made only one appearance at the major league level in 2012. In 72 major league appearances, he has a 4.95 ERA and a 1.586 WHIP out of the bullpen. In 56 appearances for AAA Reno this season, he had a 4.07 ERA and a 1.236 WHIP. Elmore, also 25, was a 34th round pick by Arizona in 2008. He spent the majority of his season at Reno as well, hitting .344/.422/.465 with 30 doubles, nine triples, one home run and 32 stolen bases in 108 games. He walked 74 times to 54 strikeouts. Elmore got his first call-up to the bigs on August 11th and hit .191/.247/.250 in 30 games.

I will update my ongoing list of off-season transactions (that I have linked on the front page) later today.

Oklahoma City Redhawks Season Recap

So far we have looked at the DSL Astros season, the GCL Astros season, the Greeneville Astros season and the Lexington Legends season. Now let's take a look at the AAA Oklahoma City affiliate. Here's a quick look at how the 2011 and 2012 teams compare.

2011 Wins-Losses/Win Percentage: 68-75/.476
2012 Wins-Losses/Win Percentage: 78-65/.545

2011 Runs Scored - Runs Allowed = Run Differential: 619 - 717 = (98)
2012 Runs Scored - Runs Allowed = Run Differential: 764 - 758 = 6

2011 Team ERA & WHIP: 4.63 & 1.516
2012 Team ERA & WHIP: 4.91 & 1.508

2011 Team Batting Line: .260/.341/.381
2012 Team Batting Line: .282/.349/.434

It's hard to truly judge a AAA affiliate because those teams are generally a mix of lifetime minor leaguers who may get an occasional MLB callup to fill a hole, struggling major leaguers who have been sent down to work on things and a few true prospects. With that said, it's difficult to read too much into the results and season comparisons at this level.

So which players had standout seasons in Oklahoma City?

There were several position players whose 2012 seasons resulted in a call-up to the Astros, such as OF Brandon Barnes (.321/.381/.514 39-2B 1-3B 12HR between Corpus Christi and Oklahoma City), 3B Matt Dominguez (.298/.347/.398), IF Scott Moore (.318/.410/.555 26-2B 1-3B 10HR), OF Fernando Martinez (.314/.367/.507 23-2B 2-3B 13HR) and C Carlos Corporan (.286/.349/.447 15-2B 6HR).

But probably the most noteworthy of those getting call-ups was OF Jimmy Paredes. In 124 games, the 23-year old hit .318/.348/.477 with 28 doubles, seven triples, 13 home runs and 37 stolen bases (tied for second in the league). He was third in the league in hits with 161 and fifth in runs scored with 92.

Of the position players left behind, the best seasons belonged to SS Angel Sanchez (.320/.390/.407 13-2B 1-3B 5HR), OF Brad Snyder (.304/.375/.550 23-2B 3-3B 20HR) and the ever dependable albeit not flashy OF J.B. Shuck (.298/.374/.352 with 11-2B 3-3B). Sanchez ranked in the top 20 in the league in batting average and on-base percentage. Snyder was seventh in slugging, eighth in OPS and was tied for 11th in home runs.

The 34-year old journeyman IF Mike Hessman deserves his own paragraph. Although he only hit .231 with a .301 OBP, he was 13th in the league with a .515 slugging percentage, first in home runs with 35 (and third in strikeouts with 136), and was tied for 11th in the league in RBI.

Several relief pitchers shuttled back and forth from Oklahoma City to Houston and back again, such as Fernando Abad (now starting), Xavier Cedeno and Enerio del Rosario. But it was RHP Mickey Storey that opened some eyes with his performance at Oklahoma City and merited an August 3rd call-up. In 38 appearances, including two spot starts, Storey was 7-4 with a 3.05 ERA and a 1.169 WHIP. Another standout was RHP Jose Valdez who ranked third in the league in saves with 21. His season numbers do not impress at first glance, but if you throw out his June numbers when he was nursing an injury that would eventually land him on the DL, his ERA drops to 2.84 with a 1.237 WHIP for the remainder of the season.

LHP Dallas Keuchel (6-4 in 16 starts, 3.90 ERA, 1.213 WHIP) had a good season with OKC before his call-up and RHP Edgar Gonzalez (1-0 in 2 starts, 0.69 ERA, 0.615 WHIP) barely saw the inside of the clubhouse at OKC before his call-up.

Of the pitchers left behind, three in particular made that crucial step from AA to AAA during the season and showed good progress in their development. LHP Brett Oberholtzer (10-10 in 38 starts, 4.37 ERA, 1.356 WHIP combined) actually got stronger as the season progressed and ended the season at Oklahoma City with a 2.02 ERA and a 1.121 WHIP over his final five starts. RHP Jarred Cosart only made six appearances (five starts) with Oklahoma City, but had a very impressive 2.60 ERA and 1.410 WHIP. His combined numbers for the season were 6-7 with a 3.30 ERA and a 1.395 WHIP. RHP Jose Cisnero was 4-1 at Oklahoma City and ended the season with a 3.70 ERA and 1.409 WHIP (combined), and a 4.54 ERA and 1.764 WHIP at Oklahoma City -- not the most impressive of numbers but a decent first step.

I will continue with my look at the final three teams' seasons when they finish post-season play. I hope I have to wait a good long while!

Signed by the Astros as a NDFA out of the Dominican Republic in 2010, Montero did not pitch in 2011 but he is still shown as being in the Astros organization.  In 2010 for the DSL Astros, he was 1-3 in 13 starts (55.2 innings pitched) with a 2.59 ERA and a 1.275 WHIP.
