Happy Birthday - 8/8

RHP Juri Perez (22)
Originally from Venezuela, Perez signed as a NDFA and first played with the VSL Astros in 2007. This season he started four games for Tri-City and had a 0.76 ERA and a 1.056 WHIP before being promoted to Lexington. In five games (three starts) with Lexington, he was 2-1 with a 4.18 ERA and a 1.437 WHIP. He was recently sent back to Tri-City.

Several former Astros with birthdays today ~

LF Jose Cruz (65)
Cheo originally signed with the Cardinals in 1966 and played five seasons in St. Louis before coming to Houston in October 1974. In 1870 games for the Astros from 1975 to 1987, he hit .292/.359/.429 with 335 doubles, 80 triples, 138 home runs, 942 RBI, 288 stolen bases and 730 walks. He was a two-time All-Star and a two-time Silver Slugger Award winner while with the Astros. He will always be remembered by those of us lucky enough to have see him for his Jose Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuzzz introduction, for always running out from under his hat as he fielded balls in left field and for never refusing an autograph request.

OF Ray Montgomery (43)
Drafted by Houston in the 13th round in 1990, Montgomery played for the Astros in a total of 47 games from 1996 to 1998 hitting .241/.281/.356. Once his playing days were over, Montgomery went into scouting for the Brewers organization and signed Rickie Weeks. He was named Director of Scouting for the Diamondbacks organization in 2011.

RHP Jack Cassel (32)
A 25th round pick by the Padres in 2000, Cassel signed as a free agent with Houston in December 2007. In nine games (three starts) for the Astros in 2008, he was 1-1 with a 5.64 ERA and a 1.516 WHIP.

2B Johnny Temple (died January 9, 1994)
Temple came from Baltimore to Houston in August 1962 and played for the Colt .45's for two seasons. In 131 games, he hit .264/.339/.314. Temple was a four time All-Star during his years with the Reds and Indians.

1B Mike Ivie (60)
Drafted by San Diego in the first round in 1970, Ivie came to Houston in a trade with the Giants in April of 1981. In 26 games for the Astros in 1981 and 1982, he hit .250/.288/.313.

RHP Mark Ross (58)
Drafted by the Astros in the seventh round in 1979, Ross pitched in only 14 games for Houston scattered over 1982, 1984 and 1985. In those games, he was 1-2 with a 3.38 ERA and a 0.844 WHIP. After his playing days, Ross became a scout for the Astros.

RHP John Hudek (46)
Originally drafted by the White Sox in the tenth round in 1988, Hudek was claimed by Houston off waivers in July of 1993. In 116 games for Houston from 1994 to 1997, Hudek was 5-7 with a 4.42 ERA and a 1.328 WHIP. In 1994, he was second in voting for Rookie of the Year to Raul Mondesi and made his only All-Star appearance.

Game 2

Tuesday's Results

DSL Athletics over DSL Astros 4-0
Edwin Villarroel (L, 2-1) allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks over his five innings. The Astros only managed four hits with Randy Cesar and Jarico Reynoso getting two each.

GCL Astros over GCL Marlins 4-0
Edison Frias (W, 2-0), Michael Feliz and Erick Gonzalez combined for a five hit shutout. Darwin Rivera was three-for-five with an RBI; Carlos Correa had the only extra base hit, a double; Yonathan Mejia was two-for-for with an RBI; and Ydarqui Marte had two hits as well.

Greeneville at Kingsport postponed

Asheville over Lexington 2-1
Jonas Dufek got the start but only pitched one inning before the rain came. After the delay, Tommy Shirley (L, 0-1) pitched four as did Mitch Lambson. Lambson was particularly effective, allowing only one hit and no walks with seven strikeouts. But Lexington just never got much of anything going at the plate. Mike Kvasnicka scored the only Lexington run on a wild pitch. Matt Duffy was two-for-four with a double and Justin Gominsky hit a double as well. Delino DeShields got his 58th stolen base.

Tulsa over Corpus Christi over Tulsa 5-1
Jarred Cosart got knocked out of the game after only 4.2 innings in which he gave up four runs on eight hits. He tweeted right after the game about a blister, a problem that sidelined him earlier in the season. Erick Abreu allowed no runs over his 3.1 innings, and Arcenio Leon allowed one in the final frame, but the Hooks never got anything going beyond an RBI single by Jonathan Villar in the third inning. Drew Muren and Jay Fernandez both hit doubles, two of only four hits for the entire Hooks staff for the night.

Oklahoma City over Memphis 11-10 in 10 innings
Starter Aneury Rodriguez allowed seven runs on 10 hits over 4.1 innings. A total of six pitchers were used with Xavier getting charged with a blown save in the ninth and Mickey Storey getting the win in the tenth. Jimmy Paredes (3x5, 2B, 3B), Mike Hessman (1x5, HR, 3RBI), Brett Wallace (3x3, RBI), J.B. Shuck (1x4, 2B, 3RBI), and Carlos Corporan (1x4, 2RBI) all had good nights at the plate, but it was Fernando Martinez' two-run walk off home run that made him the hero of the night.

Modesto over Lancaster 7-6 in 11 innings
Jorge de Leon pitched an effective four innings but a big fifth was his undoing as he allowed five runs on four hits and two walks in six innings. His team bailed him out by tying things up in the ninth. It was Kirk Clark who got charged with the loss in extras. The top of the order did a fine job of hitting with Grant Hogue going two-for-four and scoring three runs; George Springer two-for-four with a double and his 17th home run; Erik Castro three-for-six with two doubles and two RBIs; and Domingo Santana hitting a clutch two out two run single to tie the game in the ninth.

Game of the Day
Tri-City over Lowell 7-2
Juri Perez pitched seven very strong innings and it was a pitcher's duel through the top of the eighth, Lowell scored two runs off reliever Juan Minaya in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. Trailing 2-0 going in to the top of the ninth, it looked likely that the 10-game winning streak wouldn't make it to 11. But then the improbable happened. Two hit batsmen to start the inning followed by three singles and another hit batsman, a sac fly that didn't result in an out due to a fielding error, force out, sac fly, stolen base, single, two more stolen bases, and finally a strikeout = seven runs for Tri-City. Jamaine Cotton, who came in to relieve Minaya in the bottom of the eighth, pitched a very effective ninth for the win.

What went right: Frankly, Andrew Aplin, Dan Gulbransen and Emilio King taking it for the team as they all got hit by pitches really helped set up the win.

What went wrong: 11 strikeouts.

Juri Perez - 7IP 5H 0R 2BB 6SO
Juan Minaya - 0IP 2H 2R 1BB 0SO
Jamaine Cotton (W, 1-0) - 2IP 0H 0R 2BB 0SO

Ryan Dineen - 2x4 2RBI SO R

Player of the Day: Fernando Martinez walk-off bomb anyone? Don't mind if I do.

Pitcher of the Day: Juri Perez kept Lowell from scoring for the first seven innings to give Tri-City the chance to get their 11th straight win.

Wednesday's Results

DSL Dodgers over DSL Astros 5-1
There's not much to talk about offensively when the Astros only got three hits. Edwin Villarroel pitched extremely well for the Astros, allowing only one run on six hits over seven innings. Unfortunately, Rayderson Chevalier allowed four runs in the eighth without retiring a batter.

GCL Astros at GCL Marlins - Postponed

Tri-City over Lowell 2-1
Excellent pitching in this one as Juri Perez, Jeremiah Meiners (W, 1-2), Jamaine Cotton and Kenny Long (S, 2) combined on a three hitter. Tri-City couldn't get on the board until late and then did so by playing small ball. Austin Elkins and Neiko Johnson both had multi-hit games, with Elkins driving in one of the two runs. Andrew Aplin drove in the other and stole a base.

Greensboro over Lexington 8-2
This wasn't one of Luis Ordosgoitti's (L, 1-3) better outings as he gave up six runs on nine hits over five innings, but Ordosgoitti is still only 19 so he's going to struggle from time to time. Euris Quezada's two runs over his three innings were unearned. Lexington didn't score past the third and never really even threatened again until the ninth. It is worth noting, however, that Jordan Scott who was two-for-five in the game has gotten into a bit of a groove since the All-Star break and is hitting .303 over the last seven games. Roberto Pena also had two hits and his average continues to inch up. He is hitting .306 over his last 10 games.

Princeton over Greeneville 6-3
Frederick Tiburcio gave up three runs (two earned) in 4.1 innings and Tanner Bushue gave up another three runs in his inning pitched for the loss. Greeneville tied it up in the bottom of the fifth, but after Bushue gave up three in the top of the sixth, Greeneville was never back in it. Jean Batista (2x3 with two doubles) and Mike Martinez (2x3 with a double) provided most of the offense.

Modesto over Lancaster 11-9
[Memo to the Astros - that whole Jorge de Leon starting thing? It's not working very well. He is 1-4 and has averaged 3.2 innings in his 10 starts. You're going to kill your bullpen.] Jorge de Leon gave up eight runs, only two of which were earned due to a Kike Hernandez error, in 2/3 of an inning. Lancaster came surprisingly close to coming back, but an eight run deficit to start the game is a bit much to overcome. George Springer hit his 15th home run and Telvin Nash hit his 20th. Rene Garcia had a very nice three-for-five night with a double.

Game of the Day
Oklahoma City over Iowa 10-6
Brett Oberholtzer only lasted 3.2 innings in which he allowed five runs. Frankly, I hope this will temper expectations for him a bit. He will only be 23 next week and I would like to see him back succeeding consistently at AA for a while longer before earning a permanent promotion to AAA. Enerio del Rosario got the win in relief. A close game early, the Redhawks scored five in the middle innings to pull away. Yes, Mike Hessman hit two home runs, but I still don't want to see him in Houston at the risk of losing another potential piece of our future to a waiver claim. I am much more excited about Brett Wallace's four-for-six night and his two doubles and one home run. Brandon Barnes stole two bases including home.

What went right: Four home runs didn't hurt.

What went wrong: Brett Oberholtzer showed that he is still young and still needs a little more time in the oven.

Brett Oberholtzer - 3.2IP 9H 5R 1BB 3SO
Enerio del Rosario - 2.1IP 0H 0R 0BB 0SO
Hector Ambriz - 2IP 4H 1R 0BB 1SO
Juan Abreu - 1IP 0H 0R 1BB 1SO

Jimmy Paredes - 2x5 RBI BB
Brett Wallace - 4x6 2-2B HR RBI SO 3R
Mike Hessman - 2x4 2HR 3RBI SO 2R
Brad Snyder - 2x5 2B 2SO 2R
Brandon Barnes - 2x5 2-2B 2RBI 3SO R 2SB
Landon Powell - 2x4 HR RBI BB 2SO R

Player of the Day: Brett Wallace not only had a good night last night, he has also been hitting .378 in the last nine games since going back to Oklahoma City.

Pitcher of the Day: Juri Perez allowed only one run on two hits and three walks over six innings and would likely have gotten the win if his team had been able to score for him.
