An Interview with Astros/Hooks RHP Kyle Westwood

Corpus Christi Hooks RHP Kyle Westwood is a man of few words so I first spoke to Hooks Manager Rodney Linares about the 13th round 2013 draft pick. According to Linares, "Westwood is solid. He's a professional. What's not to like about Westwood? He's a groundball pitcher. He's got really, really good stuff. He's got a really, really good cutter. His curveball shows flashes of being a really good one. He battles. He's mature. He's one of the most mature pitchers I have, not because of his age, but the way he goes about his business. He's a professional, which you can't say about every pitcher that you have. I believe that he's going to surprise some people, especially this year, the way he's throwing up here. He's fun to watch. He's fun to be around."

Linares went on to explain that Westwood's stats can be a bit deceiving. As a groundball pitcher, he sometimes ends up being penalized by the organization's focus on the use of shifts. Linares said, "(Westwood) understands that it's part of the process. (When) a groundball that should have been a double play was a base hit and the run scores, he understands that it goes on the report and the people notice what he's doing."

When I spoke with Westwood earlier this month, the first question I asked him was about his pitch repertoire. Westwood told me, "I throw a 2-seam sinker with a cutter, changeup and curveball. Fastball is usually around 88 to 92, somewhere around there."

For those who have never seen Westwood pitch before, what can they expect to see? "As a pitcher, I'm going to throw a lot of strikes. I'm going to try to get ahead. I'm a groundball pitcher so I try to either get ahead early or just let them hit it on the ground. With the defense we have behind us, it works to my strengths. If I get ahead, I can put hem away also, but that's not what I'm trying to do. As a pitcher, I like to get ahead and get ground balls," said Westwood.

I asked for Westwood to critique a portion of what I wrote about him in the Astros Farm System Handbook I wrote over the offseason:
When I was jotting down my notes on Westwood, I wrote the phrase "working man's pitcher." He just sees what needs to be done, does it and goes on his way. Westwood has been described as quiet with off-the-charts competitiveness. He works quickly and efficiently using a 2-seam fastball/changeup combo to keep hitters off balance and to generate a lot of groundball outs. In addition to his 2-seamer, Westwood was working on an elevated 4-seam fastball/curveball combo during the 2014 season to add more swing-and-miss potential to his repertoire. According to Lancaster Pitching Coach Don Alexander, Westwood made good progress with all of his pitches and his 2-seamer should develop into a solid average to above average pitch with major league sinking action.
His response? "I would say that is spot on, just with the addition of the cutter that was added this year."

Although Westwood prefers Corpus Christi over playing in Lancaster, he noted, "It's not as different as you might think. (In) Lancaster, obviously the wind blows 30 mph out to the right. But here the wind, it's not 30, but we get a pretty constant wind 10 to 15 out to left. You trade wind to right for wind to left."

As to what he's accomplished so far in the season, Westwood said, "Personally, it's early. I don't have a lot of innings yet, but I feel good. Stuff's there ... just got to locate better, make some better pitches throughout the game."

When asked who on that Hooks team had a pitch he would like to steal, he said, "Devenski, his changeup. I would love to have his changeup. That's probably the best one I've seen in a long time." As to what Hooks hitter he'd least like to face? "There are probably two, either Carlos [Correa] or [Tony] Kemp. Kemp's scrappy. He's hard to get out. And then Carlos, he can beat you many ways... long ball, singles, doubles, just everything. So either of those two, I would rather not face."

Of having the recently promoted Correa playing behind him in the field, Westwood said, "It's nice to know that if there's a ball hit on the infield, there's a good chance it's an out. He has great range, strong arm. With Kemp at second base, just those two up the middle, it's almost like a big league infield, and it's great to have them behind you."

I tried to dig deeper with Westwood, but failed abjectly in getting much more out of him on a personal level, other than he has no problem admitting to enjoying an occasional chick flick. So I asked him about an animated conversation I overheard last season amongst the Lancaster pitching staff. The subject was the possible existence of mermaids, Sasquatch and aliens. Westwood's straight-faced response was, "You can't rule out aliens. I mean you just don't know. The universe is a large place. I would say there's a good chance mermaids are real. And I would say Sasquatch is the least likely. [Mermaids?] Earth's covered in what, 70% water? There's a better chance that mermaids are real than Sasquatch."

And on that note, I will leave the reader to ponder the wonders of the universe.

Thank you for your time, Kyle. Best of luck as the 2015 season continues to unfold!

Quad Cities with the...

Salt Lake 1, Fresno 0

W- Tyler DeLoach (1-0)
L- Alex White (0-2)
S- Edgar Ibarra (1)

Fresno home runs: None.

Tough series for the Grizzlies, as all three of their losses have been by 1 run. 2 of those 3 defeats were walkoffs.

In this game, they only had 2 hits. One of them was a double from Nolan Fontana in the 9th, but he was stranded at 2nd to end the game. The other hit was an L.J. Hoes single.

Alex White was saddled with the loss as he allowed an unearned run on 5 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2 in 5.2 innings. Darin Downs was the first man out of the bullpen; he allowed a hit and fanned 1 in 1.1 innings. Tyson Perez worked around a hit to throw a scoreless 8th.

The Grizzlies will look to avoid being swept at 5:35 Pacific. Luis Cruz will face Drew Rucinski.

Corpus Christi 8, Frisco 2

W- Angel Báez (1-0)
L- Jake Thompson (1-2)
S- Kyle Westwood (2)

CC home runs: None.

The Hooks used a barrage of doubles to take game 1 of this series. They trailed 2-1 after the 2nd but finished the game on a 7-0 run, with much of that damage coming in the 3rd and the 4th innings.

Corpus struck out 11 times, but that didn't really matter much because their bats were hot in this one. Brandon Meredith led off the 2nd with a double, and it didn't take long for him to score the Hooks' first run as Tyler Heineman replaced him at 2nd while he was dashing home. They took the lead with, guess what... a pair of RBI doubles from Carlos Correa and Conrad Gregor in the 3rd. Those came after Colin Moran led off with you guessed it... a double. Tony Kemp drew a 1-out walk in the 4th, which set the stage for a 4-run inning. Kemp scored on yet another RBI double, this one from Moran. Meredith, who was the only player in the lineup to not strike out, hit an RBI single that brought Moran home. Advancing to 2nd was Carlos Correa, who had singled in front of Meredith. Heineman struck once again with.... an RBI double. Meredith was able to score, thanks to an error. And finally, Leo Heras drew a bases-loaded walk in the 9th inning. Moran (2 2B, RBI), Correa, Gregor, and Meredith all had 2 hits. Heineman finished 3-5.

Mark Appel went 4 innings and allowed 2 runs on 6 hits (solo homer) and struck out 3. Angel Báez struck out 1 in a 1-2-3 5th and got the win. Kyle Westwood got a 4-inning save as he allowed 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1.

Josh Hader gets the start in game 2. He'll face Jose Leclerc at 7:05.

Modesto 11, Lancaster 5

W- Harrison Musgrave (2-1)
L- Blaine Sims (0-3)
S- Carlos Estevez (yes, that really is his name) (2)

Lancaster home runs: Jose Fernandez (1, solo in 2nd), J.D. Davis (2, 2-run in 5th), Chase McDonald (5, solo in 6th)

No shortage of fireworks in this one, as both teams combined to send 7 out of the park. Unfortunately, the JetHawks were also outgunned in the process, as they just couldn't find any answers for the Nuts' bats.

Jose Fernandez put Lancaster on the board first with a solo homer in the 2nd. J.D. Davis ripped a 2-run homer in the 5th, Chase McDonald led off the bottom of the 6th with his 5th blast of the year, and Davis added an RBI double to his ledger in the 7th inning. He finished a triple shy of the cycle. Brett Phillips (2 2B) and Chan-Jong Moon (2B) both scored a run and finished with 2 hits. McDonald extended his hitting streak to 12 games with that homer, and... he was at second base in this game. A man built like a defensive lineman playing 2nd base probably would've been a sight to see.

Blaine Sims allowed 4 runs on 6 hits (2-run homer), walked 3, and struck out 3 in 5 innings. Randall Fant was the first man out, but he only got 1 out in the 6th and allowed 4 runs on 4 hits (solo and 2-run homers). Tyler Brunnemann was once again summoned to restore order, and he did so with 2.2 scoreless, allowing 2 hits, walking 2, and striking out 5. Again, he was the only JetHawks pitcher that did not surrender any runs. Frederick Tiburcio allowed 3 runs on 2 hits (2-run homer), walked 1, and struck out 1 in the 9th inning.

In game 2 of this 4-game set, Adrian Houser will take on Grahamm Wiest. First pitch is at 6:30 Pacific.

Quad Cities 4, Peoria 3

W- Dan Mengden (1-1)
L- Tyler Bray (1-1)

QC home runs: None.

The Banditos pulled off the sweep, and at 12-3, they are off to their best start since 2001. They trailed 3-0 after the 4th inning, but scored the game's final 4 runs.

Alfredo Gonzalez put the River Bandits on the board in the 5th with an RBI single. Mott Hyde doubled to lead off the 6th, advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch, and scored on a Jake Nottingham groundout. Quad Cities went ahead in the 7th on 2 wild pitches. Hyde drew a walk on one of those, which allowed Thomas Lindauer to score the tying run. Gonzalez scored the go-ahead run while Nottingham was up to bat. Gonzalez and Hyde had 2 hits apiece; Lindauer drew 2 walks and scored 2 runs.

Austin Chrismon went 5 innings and allowed 3 unearned runs on 5 hits and struck out 6. Dan Mengden and his magnificent mustache got the win as he threw 4 scoreless, allowing 2 hits, walking 1, and striking out 5.

The River Bandits will now return home, where they will finish out the month. They'll be welcoming the Burlington Bees to Modern Woodmen Park for the weekend. In the series opener, Josh James will take on Sean Newcomb. First pitch is at 7.

Honorable Mentions

- Again, I generally refrain from using this blog as a platform to advocate a prospect's promotion, but Carlos Correa is hell-bent on appearing in Houston at some point this season.
- 8-game hitting snapped? No problem for Brett Phillips, he'll start another one.
- Tough-luck loss for Alex White, who pitched very well for Fresno.
- Chase McDonald has recorded a hit in all but one of the games he's played this year. No Lancaster effect here; his power is for real.

Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Friday, April 10, 2015

Fresno 8, Las Vegas 4

W- Dan Straily (1-0)
L- Matt Bowman (0-1)

Fresno home runs: Preston Tucker (1, 2-run in 3rd), Nolan Fontana (1, solo in 5th)

The Grizz busted out for 5 in the 3rd inning, highlighted by Tucker's 2-run blast and a 2-run single from Matt Duffy. The two of them both finished 2-4, and Duffy opened up the scoring with an RBI single in the 1st. Jon Singleton hit an RBI double in that 5-run 3rd inning. Nolan Fontana's homer led off the bottom of the 5th; he reached base in all 4 of his plate appearances, drawing a walk and scoring 3 times. And finally, Matt Dominguez had a sac fly in the 8th. He was the only player in the starting 9+1 to not have a hit, but he did have that sac fly.

Dan Straily allowed 3 runs on 5 hits, walked 3, and struck out 6 over 5 innings to record the win. Darin Downs tossed a 1-2-3 6th inning, and Jason Stoffel followed that up with a 1-2-3 inning of his own, striking out 2 in the 7th. Tommy Shirley allowed a hit and struck out 2 in a scoreless 8th, and Kevin Chapman gave up an unearned run and a hit in the 9th.

Alex White will face Darin Gorski in game 3 of this series. First pitch is at 7:05 Pacific.

Corpus Christi 8, Springfield 2

W- Mark Appel (1-0)
L- Mike Mayers (0-1)
S- Kyle Westwood (1)

CC home runs: Teoscar Hernandez (1, solo in 7th)

The Hooks staked Mark Appel to a 5-0 lead after 0.5 innings, and he and Kyle Westwood did the rest as they held the Springfield offense in check.

The only ding on Appel's line was a solo homer hit by Aledmys Diaz in the 4th. He allowed just one other hit, walked 1, and struck out 4 over 5 innings. Westwood finished it off, allowing a run on a groundout hit by Diaz in the bottom of the 9th and 4 hits while striking out 1. He recorded 7 groundball outs against 1 flyball out.

Colin Moran kicked things off with an RBI double, which in turn, kicked off a 5-run top of the 1st. He and Carlos Correa were both sent home on a Telvin Nash single. Nash would score himself as Conrad Gregor added a sac fly, and Jon Kemmer delivered an RBI single in his first at-bat of the season. The Hooks added 1 in the 5th with a Teoscar Hernandez double, 1 in the 6th with a Carlos Correa double, and 1 more in the 7th as Teoscar led off the inning with his 1st homer of the year. Teoscar (2B, HR, 2 RBI), Tyler Heineman, Kemmer, Tony Kemp (2 runs scored), and Correa (2 2B, 2 BB) all turned in 2-hit performances.

Corpus will look to sweep this opening series as Josh Hader and Chris Devenski will face Thomas Lee (not the Motley Crüe drummer) at 6:10.

San Jose 5, Lancaster 0

W- Nick Vander Tuig (1-0)
L- Michael Feliz (0-1)

Lancaster home runs: None.

The JetHawks were held to 5 hits as they were kept off the scoreboard. Chase McDonald went 2-4, and Danry Vásquez had the only extra-base hit: a double. He also walked twice.

Michael Feliz had a tough first go-round; he allowed 4 runs on 8 hits and struck out 4 in 2.2 innings. However, only one of those hits went for extra bases. Chris Cotton stopped the bleeding for a bit as he allowed just 1 hit (a double) and struck out 4 over 2.1 scoreless. Zach Morton pitched the final 4 innings, allowing a run on 2 hits, walking 2, and striking out 3.

In game 3, Evan Grills will face Keury Mella. First pitch is at 6:00 Pacific.

Quad Cities 5, Peoria 2

W- Joe Musgrove (1-0)
L- Austin Gomber (0-1)
S- Jose Montero (1)

QC home runs: None.

M&M. Musgrove and Montero combined to shackle the Peoria offense for the final 5 innings.

Bryan Radziewski allowed 2 runs on 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 5 in 4 innings of work. Joe Musgrove tagged in and allowed 3 hits while striking out 5 over 4 scoreless, and Jose Montero closed it out, striking out 2 in a 1-2-3 9th.

Everyone in the Quad Cities lineup had a hit except for Kristian Trompiz, who unfortunately had a hat trick. They got things started with a 3-run 3rd inning with a pair of RBI singles from Mott Hyde and Ryan Bottger and a bases-loaded walk drawn by Jamie Ritchie. Alfredo Gonzalez scored on an error in the 4th, and Nick Tanielu ripped an RBI triple in the 5th. Hyde, Tanielu, Bottger, and D.J. Fisher all had 2 hits; Fisher scored twice and stole his 2nd base of the year.

The Banditos will be looking for the sweep as Daniel Mengden and his glorious 'stache will face Daniel Poncedeleon in a battle of the Daniels. First pitch is at 6:00.

Here are some other noteworthy lines from Friday's slate of games:

- Matt Duffy drove in 3 with his 2 singles last night in Fresno.
- Zach Morton allowing just 1 run in his 4 innings as the 2nd tandem starter for Lancaster.
- The 4 Fresno relievers (Downs, Stoffel, Shirley, and Chapman) locking down the Grizzlies' win.

(OK, OK. Kevin Chapman gave up a run in the 9th, but it was unearned and he finished the game without further incident.)

- Carlos Correa has turned into a slugging machine in the early going; all 3 of his hits this season are doubles.
- 2 nights, 2 multi-hit games for Tony Kemp.
- Jon Kemmer also had a nice season debut as he went 2-4 with an RBI for Corpus.

Astros Minor League Recaps

Dustin is taking a well-deserved day off. I'll try my best to fill in.

Oklahoma City 5, Omaha 2

W- Mike Foltynewicz (5-3)
L- Sugar Ray (!) Marimom (4-3)
S- Josh Zeid (6)

OKC home runs: None

The RedHawks ended a three-game losing streak and crept to only a half-game behind first place Omaha on the strength of some quality pitching and one crooked number inning.

Mike Foltynewicz kept the Omaha bats quiet, allowing only two hits over the first six innings before a lead-off triple from Justin Maxwell and a Whit Merrifield triple ended his night. He left the game, having allowed two runs on four hits, while walking three and striking out eight. Bobby Doran and Josh Zeid combined to allow only one additional hit and one walk the rest of the way.

Carlos Perez, with three hits for the night, started things off in the second by tripling and scoring on a Matt Duffy single. Oklahoma City then put up four runs in the third with singles from Ronny Torreyes, Kike Hernandez, Marc Krauss and Carlos Perez, and a nicely timed L.J. Hoes two RBI double inserted into the mix.

Oklahoma City will try to salvage a split in Game 4 of this series which is scheduled to start at 2:05 CST with Jake Buchanan taking the mound against TBD. The RedHawks will then hop on a bus for the long ride home. The ride will be shorter if Buchanan can get his fifth win today.

Corpus Christi 3, San Antonio 2 (13 innings)

W- Tyson Perez (1-0)
L- Jerry Sullivan (2-2)

CC home runs: None.

The Hooks got off to a good start taking the first of four from San Antonio, but it took them a while -- 3 hours and 46 minutes to be exact.

Corpus drew first blood as newly promoted Ruben Sosa hit a lead-off double, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on an Andrew Aplin single in the first. Carlos Perdomo singled in the fourth, stole second, advanced on third on a Rene Garcia sac bunt and scored on a Jio Mier sac fly.

Hooks starter Kyle Smith (5.2IP 5H 2R/1ER 2BB 4SO HR) kept the Missions off the board until he gave up a solo home run to start the fifth. A single, pick off error by Smith and another single later, the score was tied. And that's where it stood for the next seven innings as the two teams' bullpens traded zeroes. Finally, in the 13th inning, Nolan Fontana doubled and was driven in by an Aplin single.

Michael Dimock, Travis Ballew and Andrew Robinson combined to allow five hits and two walks, striking out four, over five and a third innings. Tyson Perez did not allow a hit in his two innings of work and struck out four while walking one. Andrew Aplin had the only multi-hit night, going 3-for-6 with two RBI.

The Hooks will face San Antonio at 6:10 CST for the second game in the 4-game series. Tommy Shirley is set to take the mound against TBD.

Lancaster 7, Visalia 2

W- Kyle Westwood (5-3)
L- Spencer Arroyo (1-2)

Lancaster home runs: None.

The JetHawks have now won seven in a row and their magic number to clinch the first half is down to four.

Kyle Westwood pitched five shutout innings, allowing only a one-out double in the first and retiring the next 14 batters he faced (six strikeouts). Visalia didn't get on the board until the sixth, scoring one run off of Gonzalo Sanudo in that frame and another in the eighth. Jamaine Cotton closed it out with one and a third hitless innings.

The 'Hawks boxscore resembled a picket fence with two slats missing; the only frames in which they didn't score one run were the fourth and the eighth. Tony Kemp, Jordan Scott and Carlos Correa all had multi-hit nights with Kemp and Scott each recording a double. The trio also swiped a few bags, Correa and Scott with one each and Kemp with two. As a matter of fact, one of Kemp's stolen bases was also a run scored as he stole home in the sixth on a pick off throw to first.

Game 3 of this 4-game series pits Lance McCullers against Aaron Blair. First pitch is at 3:00 CST.

Peoria at Quad Cities - Postponed due to rain

A doubleheader is scheduled for Sunday with the first game starting at 1:15 CST. According to the River Bandits' website:
It will be the sixth doubleheader of the season for both the River Bandits and Chiefs. Game 1 will feature River Bandits right-hander Kevin Comer (0-0) against Chiefs left-hander Rob Kaminsky (1-1). Game 2 is scheduled to have River Bandits right-hander Andrew Thurman (2-3) against Chiefs right-hander Blake McKnight (1-5).
DSL Athletics 4, DSL Astros Blue 3

W- Reynaldo Hoyos (1-0)
L- Gabriel Pirela (0-1)
S- Alejandro Vargas (1)

Blue home runs: None.

The Blue team actually led this one through five on the strength of a Connor McDonald RBI single scoring Marcus Almonte in the first and a Jonathan Matute sac bunt scoring Nestor Tejada in the third, but the Astros were held to four total hits. Their final score came in the 9th on an Edgar Lorenzo RBI double that brought Matute home.

The Athletics scored one in the third off starter Erasmo Pinales and another unearned run in the sixth to tie it. Gabriel Pinela came in to pitch the final two innings and gave up the go-ahead run and an insurance run in the seventh.

The DSL has Sunday off.

DSL Astros Orange 12, DSL Mets2 11

W- Adonis Pena (1-0)
L- Carlos Hernandez (0-1)

Orange home runs: Victor Sanchez 2 (1-R in 6th; Grand Slam in 9th)

The Orange team finally got off the schneid with their first win of the season. They tried to give it away, but managed to come from behind thanks in large part to a pair of home runs by Victor Sanchez.

Dustin has more patience than I do in trying to describe some of these crazy DSL games. Here's a Jayne short version:

The good guys put up two runs in the first and held a 2-1 lead after five. Then a lot of pitching messiness happened in the 6th and 7th innings, and despite a solo home run from Vincent Sanchez in the bottom of the 6th, the good guys ended up in an 11-3 hole after seven.

But this is the DSL and the Mets came up with their own pitching messiness allowing 3 runs in the eighth and five in the ninth (thanks in large part to Sanchez' second home run of the day -- a grand slam) before Jesus Bermejo scored the sixth run of the inning, a game-winner on a Frankeny Fernandez walk-off single to seal the deal.

Yhoan Acosta pitched five innings allowing only one run and Adonis (my new favorite player name) Pena pitched the final two scoreless innings. The two pitchers in between gave up 11 runs (6 earned); it's better not to talk about it.

In addition to Sanchez, Rodrigo Ayarza (3-for-5 2B RBI 3R SB), Luis Vasquez (2-for-4 2-2B 2RBI 3R) and Cristopher Luciano (2-for-3 RBI 2BB 2R SB) all had fine days.

The DSL has Sunday off.

You're only getting two stars from me today (sorry, Dustin).

Happy Birthday - 4/13

Happy Birthday to ~

RHP Kyle Westwood (23)
Drafted by Houston in the 13th round in 2013 out of the University of North Florida, Westwood made an immediate impression in Tri-City last season, putting up a 0.81 ERA and a 0.761 WHIP in 11 games (8 starts). He has carried over that great work in his first three appearances in Lancaster in 2014 with his 1.38 ERA and 0.923 WHIP.

Two former Astros celebrate today as well ~

RF Hunter Pence (31)
Drafted by the Astros in the 2nd round in 2004, Pence played for the Astros from 2007 to July of 2011.  In 680 games for Houston, he hit .290/.339/.479 with 145 doubles, 24 triples and 103 homeruns.  The two-time All-Star was traded to the Phillies in July of 2011 for Jarred Cosart, Josh Zeid, Jonathan Singleton and Domingo Santana and was subsequently traded to the Giants in July 2012.

OF/1B Steve Pearce (31)
Originally drafted by the Pirates in the 8th round in 2005, Pearce was claimed by Houston off waivers from Baltimore in July 2012. Almost a month to the day later, he was purchased from Houston by the Yankees. In the interim, Pearce hit .254/.347/.349 in 21 games for the Astros. He is currently back with the Orioles.

Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Friday, April 11, 2014

The upper-level clubs fell victim to the crooked number, while the A clubs got a dominating performance on the mound and a 16-hit barrage.

New Orleans 8, Oklahoma City 4

W- Greg Nappo (1-0)
L- Mike Foltynewicz (0-1)
S- Chris Hatcher (2)

OKC home runs: Jon Singleton (3, solo in 5th)

OKC took a 3-2 lead thanks to that Singleton homer, but New Orleans countered and went on a 6-1 run in the 6th and the 7th to take the series opener. The RedHawks still lead the war 4-1, though.

Singleton scored 3 of the 4 RedHawks runs; Japhet Amador drove in 3 of those 4 with a 2-run double in the 4th and a groundout in the 7th. Singleton, Domingo Santana and Gregorio Petit all finished with 2 hits.

Rudy Owens gave up 2 in the 3rd, but had a solid outing otherwise. He went 5 innings and allowed 5 hits while fanning 4. Mike Foltynewicz bore the brunt of that 6-1 run, as he allowed all 6 of those runs, 5 of which were earned, and 1 of which was an inherited runner that scored. He only lasted 1.1 innings and allowed 5 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1. Folty also uncorked 2 wild pitches and was called for a balk. Darin Downs went 1.2 innings, and all 5 of his outs were strikeouts. He allowed 2 hits and walked 1. Raúl Valdés allowed a hit and struck out 2 in a scoreless 9th.

Game 2 will feature the team of Jake Buchanan and Paul Clemens as they take on Jared Rogers. First pitch is at 7:05.

Tulsa 10, Corpus Christi 9

W- Nelson Gonzalez (1-0)
L- Tommy Shirley (1-1)
S- Scott Oberg (1)

CC home runs: Kiké Hernandez (1, 2-run in 1st)

The Hooks blasted Jonathan Gray for 6 in the 1st... the Drillers didn't forget that and they ended up finishing the game on a 10-3 run, which included a 6-run inning of their own.

But, the good portion of this recap: The original starting 9 all finished the game with a hit. Kiké Hernandez had 2, and Tyler Heineman was 3-4. Jio Mier came on as a defensive replacement and didn't appear at the plate.

How did they batter Gray? Well, the top third of the order (Delino DeShields, Nolan Fontana, and Andrew Aplin) all singled to load the bases, and Matt Duffy brought them all home with a double. Duffy scored on a Preston Tucker single, and Hernandez capped it off by taking Gray deep for a 2-run shot. All 6 runs came with nobody out. Heineman added a 2-run double in the 3rd to make it an 8-1 game. Fontana hit an RBI groundout in the 6th.

Now, unfortunately, the bad news: The Hooks pitchers got knocked around, with Matt Heidenreich bearing the brunt of the Tulsa attack. He started off by allowing 1 run over 3 innings, and then the wheels fell off. The Drillers got 6 in the 4th off of him and he was charged with all 6 of those runs, 2 of which were inherited. Heidenreich left after 3.1 innings and allowed 6 hits and struck out 2. Andrew Robinson was the first man out and he went 1.2 innings, allowing a run on 2 hits and fanning 2. Tommy Shirley had an inauspicious start to his outing, as he committed an error that allowed the first man he faced to reach, and then he faced a bases-loaded, no out situation. Unlike Thursday, the Hooks couldn't escape, as Dustin Garneau punched a ball through the left side for a 2-run single. Shirley pitched the final 4 innings and allowed 3 runs (all in the 6th, only 1 was earned) on 5 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3.

The rubber game of the series features a Pac-12 matchup on the mound, with Brady Rodgers (Arizona State), being accompanied by Colton Cain, taking on Tyler Anderson (Oregon). First pitch is at 7:10.

Lancaster 5, Lake Elsinore 1

W- Vince Velasquez (2-0)
L- Ruben Mejia (0-1)
S- Kyle Westwood (2)

Lancaster home runs: None

Vince Velasquez was absolutely magnificent in his first 2 appearances; in this game, it was more of the same. He threw 5 shutout innings and allowed a hit and fanned 4. The hit, which was a single to begin the 4th, snapped his streak of 22 straight retired, dating back to Opening Night, when he got Corey Adamson to ground into a double play to end the 4th inning that night. I originally tweeted 21; looks like I needed to stretch that a little further.

Kyle Westwood, who will turn 23 tomorrow, finished it off with 4 innings, allowing a run on 3 hits, walking 1, and striking out 2. While Velasquez has been absolutely dominating out of the gate, Westwood has also posted some fine performances as well. So far, they've been the best pairing in the system, and probably by a pretty good margin, as well.

Tony Kemp led off the game with a walk and would score the first run of the evening on a Teoscar Hernandez triple. This is the 4th game that Hernandez has hit an RBI triple, and he extended his hitting streak to 6 games. He's had 2 hits in 5 of those 6 games, including a current streak of 3 straight. One batter later, he'd score on a Carlos Correa sac fly; the two of them had all the RBIs for Lancaster. Hernandez hit a 2-run triple in the 5th and Correa brought him home again, this time on a single. Rio Ruiz went 2-4, and Justin Gominsky went 3-4 with a run scored.

Game 3 of this 4-game set features the team of Lance McCullers and Kyle Smith on the mound, and they'll face Bryan Rodriguez. First pitch will take place at 6:05 Pacific.

Quad Cities 6, Great Lakes 4

W- Gonzalo Sanudo (2-0)
L- James Campbell (0-1)
S- Andrew Walter (2)

QC home runs: Jack Mayfield (1, solo in 5th)

The River Bandits unleashed a 16-hit assault on the Loons as they took the series opener.

66.7% of the QC lineup had multi-hit games, paced by Jack Mayfield, who went 3-5 with a double, a solo homer, and 2 runs scored. This is Mayfield's 3rd straight multi-hit contest, and he has a hit in all but 1 game this season (6 games played). 66.7% of the QC lineup had 1 RBI, as well. Those came off the bats of Conrad Gregor, Austin Elkins, Jobduan Morales, Mayfield, Brett Phillips, and James Ramsay. Elkins hit 2 doubles and Ramsay had a triple. Chase McDonald, Tanner Mathis, and Chan-Jong Moon all had 1 hit. Moon's hit was a triple in the 6th, and he'd score on Ramsay's triple.

Adrian Houser got the start and went 4 innings, allowing a run on 2 hits, walking 3, and fanning 3. Gonzalo Sanudo got the win as the piggybacker by throwing 3 scoreless. He allowed 2 hits, walked 2 (!!!) and struck out 3. Chris Cotton threw a 1-2-3 8th, striking out 2, but the wheels fell off for him in the 9th as he allowed all 5 Loons he faced to reach and gave up 3 runs in the process. Andrew Walter restored order by stopping the bleeding. He did issue a walk, but none of the 2 runners he inherited from Cotton scored.

In the middle game of this series, Andrew Thurman will look to get himself going after a couple of rough outings to begin the season. He and Chris Lee will face Luis Chirinos at 6:05 Eastern/5:05 Central.

Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Monday, April 7, 2014

And for the 2nd straight night, all Astros affiliates that were in action came out victorious.

Oklahoma City 6, New Orleans 4

W- Rudy Owens (1-0)
L- Jesus Sanchez (0-1)
S- Jason Stoffel (2)

OKC home runs: Austin Wates (1, solo in 7th)

The Zephyrs jumped all over Mike Foltynewicz for 4 1st-inning runs, but the RedHawks got the last laugh as they scored 6 unanswered to take the opener.

Folty labored through 2.1 innings, and all 4 runs he allowed came in the 1st. He gave up 4 hits (2 homers back-to-back), walked 2, and struck out 2. But, the guys after him picked him up and bought time for the OKC offense to get themselves going. Darin Downs allowed a hit over 1.2 scoreless, and then Rudy Owens came on and threw 4 scoreless, allowing 2 hits and striking out 3. Jason Stoffel came on to close it out and struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 9th.

OKC got on the board in the 4th with a Jon Singleton double. In the 6th, George Springer added an RBI double of his own, then came home on Singleton's 2nd 2-bagger of the evening. Austin Wates finished a triple shy of the cycle in 4 at-bats; he tied the game at 4 with a solo homer (1) in the 7th, then Max Stassi broke the tie with a 2-run double. Wates also scored 3 times and stole 3 bases (2nd twice, 3rd once). In his season debut, Erik Castro was 1-3 with a walk and 2 strikeouts as the DH.

In game 2 of this series, Paul Clemens and Jake Buchanan will take on TBA; OKC's game notes lists Brian Flynn as the starter for New Orleans. First pitch is at 7:00.

Corpus Christi 8, Springfield 5

W- Andrew Robinson (1-0)
L- Jonathan Cornelius (0-1)
S- Brady Rodgers (1)

CC home runs: Delino DeShields (1, solo in 7th)

After briefly losing the lead, the Hooks finished the game on a 5-1 run. They got outhit 16-9, but won the column that counts towards the W-L record.

Everyone in the lineup had 1 RBI except for Preston Tucker. He went 1-5 with a run scored. Corpus opened up the scoring with 3 runs in the 2nd on a Kiké Hernandez single, a René Garcia groundout, and a Jio Mier double. Hernandez and Mier both had 2 hits. The Hooks fell behind 4-3 after the 4th, but again, that didn't last long. They answered with a pair in the 5th on a Joe Sclafani fielder's choice scoring Garcia and an Andrew Aplin groundout scoring Mier. Delino DeShields went deep for the first time this season with a 1-out solo shot in the 7th. M.P. Cokinos hit an RBI single in the 8th, and Matt Duffy joined Kiké and Jio in the 2-hit club with an RBI single of his own in the 9th inning.

Colton Cain went 3.2 innings and allowed 4 runs on 10 hits (2-run homer), walked 1, and struck out 3. Andrew Robinson came on with 2 outs in the 4th and struck out the Cuban defector, Aledmys Diaz, to end the inning. He then proceeded to strike out 2 in a 1-2-3 5th to get the victory. Brady Rodgers tagged in for the final 4 innings, and the only run he allowed was a solo homer to James Ramsey in the 9th. Rodgers gave up 5 other hits and struck out 3.

The Hooks will look for the sweep in a morning contest. Let's see what Aaron West and David Rollins have in store for an encore after impressing in their first appearances of the season. They'll be taking on Kurt Heyer at 11:10 A.M. A radio note: If you're planning to listen on the Internet via iHeartRadio, this game will be on 1400 (KUNO) instead of the usual station, 1360 (KKTX).

Lancaster 2, San Jose 1

W- Vince Velasquez (1-0)
L- Tyler Mizenko (0-1)

Lancaster home runs: None.

In a random low-scoring game at The Hangar, the JetHawks walked off with the win in the series opener thanks to a 2-run double from Rio Ruiz with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th.

Both teams only had 3 hits; Teoscar Hernandez had 2 of Lancaster's 3... and you know who had the other one. After Jordan Scott and Tony Kemp were the first 2 casualties of the 9th, Hernandez walked, and Carlos Correa followed suit. And Rio did the rest. Correa was 0-2, but he walked twice and scored the winner.

Lancaster's pitchers have absolutely taken flight out of the gate. This game was no different. Kyle Westwood went 5 innings and allowed an unearned run on 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 7. Vince Velasquez came on and all he did was toss 4 perfect innings, striking out 5 in the process.

In the middle game of this series, Kyle Smith and Lance McCullers will face Chris Stratton at 6:30 Pacific.

Quad Cities was off

They spent the day traveling to Lansing to prepare for 3 against the Lugnuts. Chris Lee and Andrew Thurman will take on Tom Robson in the series opener at 7:05 Eastern/6:05 Central.

Three Stars

Actually, there will be 8.

Astros Minor League Recaps

Monday's Games

Oklahoma City over Memphis 2-1
Ross Seaton pitched the first eight, allowing one run on eight hits, but didn't come away with the win. The RedHawks scored one in the first as Jimmy Paredes doubled and scored on a Jose Martinez single, and didn't score again until the ninth when Jon Singleton (2x4) hit a walk-off double scoring pinch runner Ruben Sosa. Jason Stoffel pitched the ninth for the win. George Springer was given the day off and his quest for 40/40 stalled out at 37/45.

Corpus Christi over San Antonio 7-6
It wasn't a pretty win with four Hooks errors in the game, but it was a win nonetheless. R.J. Alaniz evened his season record at 9-9 as he allowed four runs (one earned) on seven hits and a walk while striking out three in five and a third innings. Alex Sogard and Jonas Dufek took it the rest of the way with two more unearned runs coming across on their watch. The Hooks trailed 3-0 entering the third, but put up two runs in that inning and another in the fourth on a Domingo Santana (3x4) solo home run to tie things up. Then they really got busy in the fifth as Preston Tucker drove in one run with a single and Domingo Santana provided the fans with an encore performance, this time with a three-run home run, his 25th of the season. Ronnie Torreyes celebrated his birthday by going two-for-three with a walk and scoring a run.

Lancaster over Rancho Cucamonga 8-1
Aaron West went to 10-8 for the season with five shutout innings in which he allowed only two hits and a walk while striking out eight. Tyson Perez followed with two and a third innings. Perez didn't allow a hit, but walked two batters to start the eighth. Jordan Jankowski came in to strand those runners and get the final two outs of the frame before allowing the only Quakes run in the bottom of the ninth. The 'Hawks reached the run column in the third on RBI singles from Andrew Aplin (3x5) and M.P. Cokinos (2x5) and an RBI sac fly from Tyler Heineman. They added on two more in the fourth on home runs from Chris Epps (2x3 2BB) and Delino DeShields (2x3 4R) and two in the sixth on Epps second home run of the day and Aplin's second RBI single of the day. The final run came in the eighth on an Andrew Aplin RBI double.

Quad Cities over Beloit 3-2
Daniel Minor (6IP 6H 2R/1ER 0BB 5SO) got the start and the win with Jamaine Cotton and Zach Morton providing scoreless relief. Quad Cities got one run in the third on Teoscar Hernandez' 13th home run of the season. They followed up with two in the fourth on a Jordan Scott RBI triple in the fourth; Scott then scored on a Carlos Correa single. Roberto Pena went two-for-three with a walk. Scott was two-for-four with TWO triples, his sixth and seventh of the season.

Tri-City over Brooklyn 3-1
Kyle Westwood and Company had a phenomenal day for Tri-City. Westwood allowed one unearned run on two hits and one walk. He struck out four in his seven innings. Charles Basford got the win and Tyler Brunnemann got the save as each tossed a perfect frame. Tyler White (3x3 BB) scored on a Ronnie Mitchell sac fly in the fourth to tie things up at 1-1 and that is where things stood until the bottom of the eighth when White doubled in a run and scored on another Mitchell sac fly to get the go-ahead runs.

Greeneville over Kingsport 7-2 (best-of-three playoff series at 1-1)
Chris Lee got the start and the win for Greeneville as he pitched five strong innings, allowing one run (via a solo home run) on five hits and two walks while striking out four. He was followed by three innings from Austin Chrismon whose only run allowed was also on a solo homer. He gave up three hits and struck out five. Gerardo Ramirez pitched a perfect ninth for the GStros. Greeneville got all the runs they needed, and then some, in the third inning on an Ariel Ovando homer, a Tanner Mathis RBI double and RBI sac flies from Juan Santana and Edwin Gomez. Mathis added one in the fifth on a solo home run and Ovando added one in the eighth on a sac fly RBI. The final run came in the ninth as Tanner Mathis scored from first on a ground out and throwing error. Brian Holberton went two-for-four and Thomas Lindauer was three-for-four with a double and a run scored.

Player of the Day: I've got to go with Domingo Santana for his two home run, four RBI day, but a case could certainly be made for Andrew Aplin, Chris Epps and Tanner Mathis so I'm handing out a few extra honorable mentions today.

Pitchers of the Day: I'm splitting the honors between Kyle Westwood for getting Tri-City just that much closer to the playoffs and Aaron West for his excellent outing heading into their playoff season.

Note: I haven't forgotten about handing out Player and Pitcher of the Month honors for August, but decided to wait until the regular season is over to add the few September honorees into the mix.

Astros Minor League Recaps

Tuesday's Games

Many thanks to Buca for pulling extra recap duty while I was traveling over the weekend!!!

Omaha over Oklahoma City 2-0 in 7 innings (first game)
Jarred Cosart pitched the full seven innings and ended up with the loss as he allowed two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out four. (Cosart has only allowed one walk in his last two appearances; in the prior eight games, he gave up 31 of them. I hope to see this trend continue.) The RedHawks were held to two singles in the shutout, one each from Robbie Grossman and Jon Singleton. Che-Hsuan Lin walked twice.

Oklahoma City over Omaha 5-4 in 7 innings (second game)
Bobby Doran was called up from Corpus Christi to make a spot start in the double-header and worked four and two-thirds scoreless innings before giving up a three-run home run in the fifth and giving way to Alex Sogard for the final out of the inning. Jason Stoffel allowed the final run in his inning of work before handing the ball to Josh Zeid for his sixth save of the season. The RedHawks got half of their six hits in the three-run first inning, a triple from Jonathan Villar (2x3 R) and doubles from Jimmy Paredes (1x3 RBI R) and Brandon Laird (1x3 RBI 2R). Jose Martinez (1x2 RBI) drove in the final 'Hawks run in the fifth with a sac fly.

Texas League South All-Stars over Texas League North All-Stars 6-0
David Martinez (1IP 1H), Jake Buchanan (1IP 2H) and Mike Foltynewicz (1IP 0H) all contributed toward the South's shutout of the North, and starting Catcher Rene Garcia was hitless in two at-bats and scored a run. But it was George Springer who shone, driving in three runs on two home runs and being awarded MVP of the game. Springer also walked and stole a base.

Lancaster over Bakersfield 11-2
Luis Cruz (5IP 6H 1R 1BB 3SO), Blair Walters (2IP 2H 1R 1BB 2SO HR) and Jonas Dufek (2IP 1H 3SO) combined to keep Bakersfield under control while the JetHawks offense had their way with Bakersfield pitching. M.P. Cokinos was three-for-four with a walk, two RBI and a run scored; Preston Tucker (2x5 4RBI 2R) hit his 15th home run of the season, a three-run dinger; and Carlos Perdomo was two-for-five with three RBI. Nolan Fontana, in his first action in 10 days, went one-for-three with a double, two walks and scored twice. Andrew Aplin stole a base and scored three of the 'Hawks runs. They have now won six games in a row.

Quad Cities over Peoria 4-1
Quad Cities extended its winning streak to six games as well with this one. He was followed by Juan Minaya (3H 1R 1BB 4SO) for the final four innings. The River Bandits put up two in the third on a Jesse Wierzbicki sac fly and a Roberto Pena (2x4) RBI single and two more in the fourth on Jordan Scott and Jobduan Morales RBI singles. Teoscar Hernandez was two-for-four with a walk and Austin Elkins went two-for-four with a triple and a run scored.

Tri-City over Connecticut 8-6
Kyle Westwood earned his first professional win with a commanding start, allowing only one hit and striking out four in five shutout innings. Andrew Walter (1.1IP 4H 5R 2SO HR) and Albert Minnis (1.2IP 1H 1R 3SO HR) followed with Chia-Jen Lo pitching the ninth for his fourth save. Tri-City put up a four-spot in the fourth and another four in the fifth, with Dan Gulbransen (3x5 2-2B RBI 2R), Ernesto Genoves (2x4 2B Sac 2R) and Ronnie Mitchell (2x4 3B HR 3RBI 2R) in the middle of all the action.

Elizabethton over Greeneville 8-4
See Appy Astros Eyewitness Report

GCL Astros over GCL Tigers 6-1
Troy Scribner (4H 1BB 5SO) gave up the only Tigers run in his four innings of work. Samil de los Santos (3IP 1H 1BB 5SO), Jorge Perez (1IP 1H 1BB 1SO) and Javier Lozano (1IP 1BB) took it the rest of the way with De los Santos getting the win. Tyler White had a big game, going three-for-four with two RBI and a run; Jason Martin was one-for-four with a triple, walk, stolen base and two runs; and Brett Booth was two-for-three with two RBI. Alex Gonzalez and Mesac Laguna both hit doubles in the game.

Player of the Day: There were several good appearances at the plate on Tuesday, but there was only one MVP. George Springer, you're my MVP of the day too!

Pitchers of the Day: Vincent Velasquez and Kyle Westwood get to share the honors - five shutout innings from each and no walks ... I'll take it!
