Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Thursday, May 17, 2018

Pitching ruled the day out on the farm.

Corpus Christi sweep!

Fresno 9, El Paso 7

W- Matt Ramsey (2-1)
L- Colten Brewer (0-3)
S- Brendan McCurry (7)

Fresno home runs: J.D. Davis (4, solo in 9th), A.J. Reed (6, solo in 9th)

J.D. Davis had a monster night at the plate and the Grizzlies had to clean up a mess after squandering a 6-2 lead, which they did so successfully.

Davis wound up hitting for the cycle and also drew a walk. He opened the scoring with a two-run triple in the 1st, walked in the 3rd, hit an RBI single in the 4th, ripped an RBI double in the 6th, and completed the cycle with a homer to lead off the 9th inning.

After his triple, Davis scored on an A.J. Reed groundout. Jon Kemmer ripped an RBI ground-rule double in the 3rd inning. Tony Nuñez doubled to lead off the 8th and scored on a Kyle Tucker groundout. After Davis completed the cycle, Reed followed by launching a home run of his own.

Davis reached in all five of his plate appearances. Nuñez went 3-4, while Reed (solo HR, 2 RBI, 2 R), Kemmer (RBI ground-rule 2B), and Tyler White (2B, 2 R) all finished with two hits each.

Josh James went five innings and the two runs he allowed came on a home run hit by Dusty Coleman in the 3rd. James allowed two other hits, walked two, and struck out ten. James came one strikeout short of tying a career-high; he struck out 11 for Lancaster on June 14, 2016.

Kent Emanuel came on for the 6th and got roughed up, allowing four runs on three hits (two-run homer) and striking out one. Matt Ramsey stopped the bleeding by throwing two scoreless innings, allowing a hit, walking one, and striking out two. The Chihuahuas tried to get another comeback attempt going on Brendan McCurry in the 9th and they got a run off of him, but McCurry was able to right the ship and closed it out. He allowed a run on two hits, walked one, and struck out one.

David Paulino will face Jesse Scholtens in game two of this series. First pitch is at 7:05 Mountain.

Corpus Christi 4, San Antonio 0

W- Ryan Hartman (3-1)
L- Lake Bachar (0-1)

CC home runs: Randy César (3, 2-run in 6th)

After getting swept out of San Antonio last weekend, the Hooks exacted a measure of revenge on their I-37 rivals by sweeping them out of Corpus Christi as Ryan Hartman, Erasmo Pinales, and Riley Ferrell joined forces on a shutout.

Hartman allowed four hits, walked one, and struck out a career-high 11 in 6.1 innings of work. This is Hartman's first career double-digit strikeout game. Pinales tagged in for 1.2 innings and issued a walk while striking out four. Ferrell completed the shutout by throwing a 1-2-3 9th inning; he got a groundball out, a lineout, and a popout to end the evening.

Myles Straw singled with two outs in the 3rd inning. He proceeded to steal second and scored the first run of the game on a Josh Rojas single. Rojas singled in the 6th, stole second, and scored on a single from Carmen Benedetti. One batter later, Randy César whacked a two-run home run. Rojas finished 3-4 and Straw went 2-4. They also stole a couple of bases; Straw now has 25, while Rojas has 18 on the season. César's homer extended his hitting streak to ten games.

Brock Dykxhoorn will get the start in the opener of a four-game series in Frisco. He'll take on Richelson Peña at 7:05.

Buies Creek and Winston-Salem was postponed

Due to rain. This game will be made up on May 23 in Winston-Salem as part of a doubleheader.

Buies Creek welcomes the Carolina Mudcats to Campbell University for the weekend. Gabriel Valdez will take on Cameron Roegner at 6:00 Eastern.

Quad Cities 2, Cedar Rapids 1

W- Leovanny Rodriguez (1-0)
L- Carlos Suniaga (2-1)

QC home runs: Corey Julks (4, 2-run in 7th)

Both teams had one scoring play. Fortunately for the Banditos, their scoring play yielded more runs. Quad Cities took the last three games of this series from the Kernels after dropping the first two.

Corey Julks broke a 0-0 tie in the 7th with a two-run blast. Jake Meyers went 2-4 with a double out of the leadoff spot.

Parker Mushinski allowed a hit, walked two, and struck out five over five shutout innings. Leovanny Rodriguez pitched the last four innings and allowed a run on two hits, walked one, and struck out six.

Quad Cities will conclude their roadtrip with a weekend in Beloit. César Rosado will start the opener, which starts at 6:30.

Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Monday, May 14, 2018

The Rockets are in the Western Conference Finals, but most of you may not care about that (that's a shame).

For those of you who aren't inclined to watching hoops, never fear. Minor league recaps are coming right up!

Fresno 4, Salt Lake 3

W- Reymin Guduan (3-1)
L- Jake Jewell (1-2)
S- James Hoyt (2)

Fresno home runs: Tim Federowicz (4, 2-run in 6th)

Fresno and Salt Lake both scored in two innings. The Grizzlies scored more in their two scoring innings and as a result, they came away with the victory on Monday.

Tim Federowicz put the Grizzlies on the board with a two-run home run in the 6th and Jon Kemmer put them in the lead with a two-run triple in the 8th. Federowicz and J.D. Davis scored all four of Fresno's runs in this game; they, along with Tony Kemp, all finished 2-4 on the evening. Kemp now has a 20-game hitting streak.

Mike Hauschild went five innings and allowed two runs on five hits, walked three, and struck out two. Matt Ramsey struck out five in two perfect innings out of the bullpen. Reymin Guduan and James Hoyt both threw an inning; Guduan allowed a hit and struck out two in a scoreless 8th, while Hoyt withstood a solo home run from Jose Briceño to close out the game, striking out one in the 9th.

Rogelio Armenteros will take on Osmer Morales in an afternoon edition of Taco Tuesday in Fresno. First pitch is at 11:05 AM Pacific.

Corpus Christi 2, San Antonio 1

W- Yoanys Quiala (3-3)
L- Miguel Diaz (1-2)
S- Riley Ferrell (2)

CC home runs: Taylor Jones (7, 2-run in 4th)

Both teams had one scoring play apiece in this game and it came in the form of a home run. The Hooks' home run resulted in more runs, though.

Taylor Jones smacked a two-run home run in the 4th inning which was Corpus Christi's only scoring play. Jones played 105 games between both Class A levels in 2017 and hit seven home runs. He's matched that total in 32 games with Corpus Christi.

Yoanys Quiala has had a rather bumpy road after throwing five innings of one-run ball in his first start of the season, but he turned in his best outing on Monday as he allowed just four hits and struck out six over seven shutout innings. Riley Ferrell finished it off, although Kyle Overstreet spoiled the shutout with a two-out solo home run in the 9th. Ferrell allowed one other hit and struck out two in his two innings of work.

Alex Winkelman will get the start in game 2 of this series. He'll face Logan Allen at 7:05.

Buies Creek was off

The Carolina Stros will begin a three-game series against the Winston-Salem Dash at 7:00 Eastern.

Cedar Rapids 5, Quad Cities 1

W- Brusdar Graterol (1-0)
L- Tyler Ivey (1-3)

QC home runs: None.

The Banditos were shackled by Brusdar Graterol, who held them to just two hits and a walk and also struck out ten times against him in 5.2 innings.

Tyler Ivey went five innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits, walked two, and struck out five. Peter Solomon allowed a run on three hits and struck out six in three innings of work.

Quad Cities spoiled the shutout in the 9th on a pop-fly RBI single from Mike Papierski, even though he got thrown out at second to end the game in a bid for a double.

Yohan Ramirez will face Edwar Colina in game 2 of this series. First pitch is at 6:35.

Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Thursday, May 10, 2018

Las Vegas 3, Fresno 2

W- Logan Taylor (1-0)
L- Josh James (0-1)
S- Jacob Rhame (2)

Fresno home runs: None.

The Grizzlies scored in more innings than the 51s, but Vegas put up more runs in their one scoring inning.

Josh James went five innings in his AAA debut and allowed three runs on four hits (solo homer), walked three, and struck out seven. Matt Ramsey allowed a hit and struck out three over two scoreless innings, and Buddy Boshers recorded a strikeout in a 1-2-3 9th.

Tyler White ripped an RBI double in the 4th to open the scoring, while Kyle Tucker hit a sac fly in the 6th for the other Grizzlies scoring play. Both of White's hits in this game were doubles. Drew Ferguson went 2-4 and scored on White's double and Tony Kemp, who scored on Tucker's sac fly, led off the 6th with a single to extend his hitting streak to 16 games, which surpasses Bryan de la Cruz's 15-game streak in Quad Cities as the longest in the system this season.

David Paulino will get the start in game 3. He'll take on Scott Copeland at 7:05 Pacific.

Corpus Christi 9, Midland 2

W- Cionel Perez (2-1)
L- Kyle Friedrichs (2-2)

CC home runs: Randy César (2, 3-run in 3rd), Josh Rojas (1, 2 season; solo in 8th)

The Hooks battered the Hounds thanks to a six-run 3rd.

Cionel Perez turned in a fine start on the mound as he allowed three hits, walked one, and struck out seven over five shutout innings. Alex Winkelman tagged in for three innings and allowed a run on two hits, walked two, and struck out seven. Riley Ferrell got the first two outs of the 9th, one via strikeout, but he also walked the bases loaded and ended up allowing a run on a fourth free pass. Ralph Garza Jr. got him out of further trouble with a game-ending strikeout.

Alex De Goti kicked off the big 3rd inning with a double and Corpus loaded the bases as Myles Straw singled and Stephen Wrenn drew a walk. De Goti scored the first run of the evening when Josh Rojas reached on a force out where Wrenn was thrown out at second base. Taylor Jones got plunked to re-load the bases for Ryne Birk, who came through with a two-run single. One batter later, Randy César busted this game open with a three-run blast. Straw singled to start the 6th inning; he then stole second and scored on a Rojas double. Jones followed with an RBI single. Rojas drove himself in for the final Hooks run of the night when he launched a solo homer in the 8th inning.

Straw finished 3-5 with two runs scored and two stolen bases. He now has 19 steals this year and 100 for his minor league career. Rojas went 2-5 and scored three times, and Carmen Benedetti turned in a two-hit night as well.

Framber Valdez will take on Joel Seddon in game 2 of this series. First pitch is at 7:05.

Buies Creek 8, Myrtle Beach 5

W- Ronel Blanco (3-1)
L- Alex Lange (1-2)
S- Brandon Bielak (1)

BC home runs: None.

The Carolina Stros went down 4-0 right out of the gate, but they righted the ship and responded with a 6-run 6th to take control.

Abdiel Saldaña allowed the four runs in the 1st on five hits and walked one. He only recorded two outs in the inning. Fortunately, Ronel Blanco and Brandon Bielak picked him up and held the Pelicans to one run over the final 8.1 innings. Blanco allowed a hit and struck out six in 4.1 innings, while Bielak allowed a run on three hits, walked one, and struck out six over the final four innings to get the save.

Buies Creek got off the canvas with a couple of runs in the 2nd inning as Troy Sieber grounded into a force out that scored J.J. Matijevic. An error on the play also allowed Osvaldo Duarte to score. Let's fast-forward to the top of the 6th inning.

Alfredo Angarita doubled to lead off the 6th and scored on Ronnie Dawson's single. Abraham Toro drew a walk, which prompted a pitching change. J.J. Matijevic followed by reaching on an error to load the bases for Duarte, who hit a two-run single to put the Carolina Stros in the lead. Aníbal Sierra ripped a two-run double, advanced to third on Sieber's single, and scored on a Carlos Canelón single.

Dawson and Duarte both finished 3-5 on the evening. Matijevic went 2-4 with a double and scored twice. It was sort of a night to forget on the bases as Buies Creek went 0-4 on stolen base attempts.

Hector Perez will face Matt Swarmer in game 2 of this series. First pitch is at 7:05 Eastern.

Lake County 2, Quad Cities 1

W- Tommy DeJuneas (1-1)
L- Cristian Javier (1-1)
S- Kyle Nelson (2)

QC home runs: None.

The Captains took the series opener by scoring in more innings than the Banditos.

Corey Julks scored Quad Cities' only run on a Mike Papierski groundout in the 3rd. Cody Bohanek went 2-3 with a double and was the only man on either side to finish with a multi-hit game. Jonathan Arauz came up three times and finished with a triple. Julks stole two bases, giving him 10 on the year.

Luis Garcia and Cristian Javier both went four innings and both of them allowed a run. Garcia's was earned; he also allowed three hits, walked three, and struck out four. Javier allowed the other run, which was unearned. He also allowed a hit, walked three, and struck out seven. Adam Bleday issued a couple of walks and struck out the side in the 9th.

Parker Mushinski gets the nod for game 2. He'll face Francisco Perez at 6:35.

Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Sunday, April 8, 2018

Let's play two in Salem!

Fresno 9, Reno 4

W- Jacob Dorris (1-0)
L- Jared Miller (0-1)

Fresno home runs: None.

The Grizzlies scored three runs in the 5th and the 6th to seize control of this game and even up their series with the Aces at 2 games apiece.

Rogelio Armenteros went 4.1 innings and allowed 3 runs on 6 hits (2-run homer), walked 3, and struck out 6. Fresno's bullpen picked him up by allowing just one run over the final 4.2 innings. Jacob Dorris struck out 2 over 1.2 perfect frames, Chris Nunn allowed that one run on 2 hits and struck out 2 in 2 innings, and Matt Ramsey worked around a hit in order to throw a scoreless 9th, striking out 1.

A.J. Reed singled to lead off the 2nd inning and eventually scored the first run of the afternoon on a Jon Kemmer groundout. This would be the Grizzlies' only run of the game until the 5th inning.

After Alejandro Garcia struck out to start the 5th, Tony Kemp, Drew Ferguson, and Kyle Tucker all drew walks. Kemp ended up scoring on a wild pitch. Tyler White drew yet another walk to re-load the bases, and then Reed followed by walking Ferguson in. Garrett Stubbs followed with a sac fly.

In contrast to the 5th, the Grizzlies used some hits to score in the 6th. Kemmer walked to lead things off and scored on Garcia's RBI double. Kemp followed with an RBI single and then scored on a double play. Super Jack Mayfield ripped an RBI double in the 7th and Reed drove in Fresno's last run of the day with an 8th-inning sac fly. Kemp (RBI, 3 R), Reed (2 RBI, R), Stubbs (RBI, R), and Garcia (2B, RBI, R) all finished with two hits on the afternoon.

Kent Emanuel faces former Astro Jake Buchanan in the finale of this series. First pitch is at 1:05 Pacific.

Arkansas 7, Corpus Christi 5

W- Johendi Jiminian (1-0)
L- Akeem Bostick (0-1)
S- Matt Walker (1)

CC home runs: None.

The Hooks were on the verge of taking a rather ugly loss to start a new series, but they suddenly sprang to life in the final half-inning and legitimately made things interesting before ultimately falling short.

Entering the 9th, Corpus only had two hits on the day. However, Myles Straw and Carmen Benedetti led off the inning by drawing walks and they both advanced on a passed ball. Yuli Gurriel, Yordan Alvarez, and Randy César all followed with RBI singles, and Nick Tanielu ripped a two-run double. All five Corpus Christi runs scored before they made an out. Unfortunately, the next three men went down. Yuli (2B, RBI, R) and Tanielu (2B, 2 RBI) both finished 2-4 on the day.

Akeem Bostick went 3.2 innings and allowed 3 runs on 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 6. Kevin Hill was the first man out of the Corpus bullpen and allowed a run on 2 hits and walked 2 in 1.1 innings. Ralph Garza Jr. pitched the final three innings and allowed 3 runs on 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2.

Cionel Perez makes his 2018 debut in the middle game of this series and he'll be opposed by Nathan Bannister. First pitch is at 7:10.

Game 1: Buies Creek 1, Salem 0 in 8 innings

W- Justin Ferrell (1-0)
L- Matthew Gorst (0-1)

BC home runs: None.

There was only one scoring play in this game and it belonged to the Carolina Stros. Unlike Quad Cities on Saturday, Buies Creek was the beneficiary of the new extra-innings rule. It's still stupid and I will not hear any arguments about how it actually is not stupid.

Kristian Trompiz started at second base to start the 8th inning, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored the only run of the first game on an Osvaldo Duarte sac fly. Chas McCormick (2B), Luis Payano, and Chuckie Robinson had the only Buies Creek hits in Game 1.

Carson LaRue allowed 3 hits and struck out 3 in 4.2 innings. Justin Ferrell tagged in and allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 3 in 3.1 innings.

Game 2: Salem 2, Buies Creek 1 in 8 innings

W- Algenis Martinez (1-0)
L- Carlos Sierra (0-1)

BC home runs: None.

As if one game featuring that rule wasn't enough... the second game of the Buies Creek-Salem doubleheader also went to extra innings.

Aníbal Sierra led off the third inning with a double, advanced to 3rd base on a wild pitch, and scored the Carolina Stros' only run of game 2 on a Carlos Canelón groundout. The other Buies Creek hit in this game was a Ronnie Dawson double.

In his Astros debut, Brandon Bailey allowed a run on 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 7 in 5.1 innings. The Red Sox scored the winning run, which was unearned, off of Carlos Sierra with one out in the 8th inning. In 2 innings, Sierra allowed 2 hits and walked 2.

Buies Creek's season-opening roadtrip continues in Lynchburg, Virginia, where they will begin a three-game series with the Hillcats at 6:30 Eastern. Whoever gets the start will go up against Justin Garza.

Quad Cities and Cedar Rapids was postponed again

Due to snow showers in the forecast. This game will be made up at a later date.

Yohan Ramirez, who has definitely waited a while to pitch this season, will take the mound for the River Bandits' home opener. He'll take on Cole Stapler at 6:35.
