The Astros signed 33-year old IF Mike Hessman to a minor league only deal. Zachary Levine has the story which also includes the details of a mini-camp for seven of the Astros minor league pitchers and updates on Vincent Velasquez (good news) and Chia-Jen Lo (bad news). The seven pitchers invited to mini-camp are:

Happy Birthday - 1/26
LHP Ryan-Rowland Smith (29)
Though technically not an Astro at this time, we'll give Free Agent Rowland-Smith a little birthday love today. Rowland-Smith was originally signed as a NDFA out of Australia by the Mariners in 2000. He was able to put up decent numbers for the Mariners in 2007 to 2009, but after a disastrous 2010, he was granted free agency and signed with the Astros in hopes that he could find his earlier success. For the OKC team in 2011, he was 2-11 with a 5.90 ERA and a 1.653 WHIP. However, he fared much better in the Puerto Rican Winter League. Despite an 0-3 record, he had a respectable 3.63 ERA and a 1.432 WHIP.
