Signed by the Astros as a non-drafted free agent from the Dominican Republic in 2011, de los Santos made his first 11 appearances of the 2014 season with the GCL and his last four with the Greeneville Astros, combining for a 4.58 ERA and a 1.576 WHIP. He walked 12 and struck out 28 in 19.2 innings.
LF Danry Vasquez (21)
Originally signed by the Tigers as a NDFA out of Venezuela in 2010, Vasquez came to the Astros organization in the July 2013 Jose Veras trade. Vasquez spent his 2014 season with High A Lancaster, hitting .291/.353/.407 with 30 doubles, two triples, five home runs and 47 RBI in 114 games.

Busby came to Houston as a free agent and played in 15 games for the Colt .45's in 1962 at the end of his career, hitting .182/.308/.182 in 11 at-bats. He was an All-Star with the White Sox in 1951 but his best season was for the Washington Senators in 1953 when he hit .312/.358/.415 in 150 games.
3B Gene Freese (died June 19, 2013 at 79)
Freese came to Houston in a July 1966 trade with the White Sox and played in 21 games for the Astros at the end of his career with forgettable results. His best season was arguably his 1961 season with the Reds when he hit .277/.307/.466 with 27 doubles, two triples and 26 home runs. In all, he played in the major leagues for 12 seasons.
OF Wilbur Howard (66)
Originally drafted by the Seattle Pilots in the 19th round in 1968, Howard came to Houston in a March 1974 trade with the Brewers. In 450 games played for the Astros from 1974 to 1978 he hit .252/.285/.327. He led the National League in fielding percentage as an outfielder in 1975.

Solano was signed by Houston as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 1979, and pitched in 82 games for Houston from 1983 to 1987 with a 4.55 ERA and a 1.405 WHIP before being traded to Seattle in September 1987.

A sixth round pick by the Astros in 1998, Matranga played in 6 games for Houston in 2003. In 5 at-bats, he got one hit -- a home run in his first major league at-bat. He only had one more major league plate appearance (with the Angels in 2005), and did not get a hit.

Signed by the Astros as a non-drafted free agent from the Dominican Republic in 2011, de los Santos stumbled a bit in his first season stateside. In 14 games (two starts), he was 3-2 with a 7.86 ERA and a 1.557 WHIP. He walked seven batters while striking out 28 in 26+ innings.

Astros Minor League Recaps
Monday's Games
Oklahoma City over Omaha 6-1
Brett Oberholtzer (who hasn't had any work since July 5th) got the win as he struck out nine and allowed only one hit, one run and one walk over six innings. Kevin Chapman (2IP 1H 2BB 4SO) and Jason Stoffel (1IP 1H 1BB) provided scoreless relief. The RedHawks scored one in the first on a Brandon Laird RBI single, but didn't score again until an RBI triple from Ruben Sosa (2x4) in the sixth gave them what proved to be the winning margin. RBI singles from Laird in the seventh and Robbie Grossman in the eighth padded the lead, and a Jose Martinez RBI single and a Jon Singleton (1x3 2B BB) sac fly RBI in the ninth sealed the deal. Jimmy Paredes was two-for-five and stole a base. George Springer was one-for-five, stole two bases and scored two runs (and struck out three times).
Corpus Christi over San Antonio 6-4
Ross Seaton got the start and the win, allowing four runs (three earned) on ten hits over seven and two-thirds innings. Chia-Jen Lo retired his one batter and then Jorge de Leon pitched a perfect ninth for his sixth save. Corpus trailed in this one until a five-run fifth put them on the board, featuring an RBI single from Rene Garcia (3x4), an RBI double from Jonathan Meyer and a two-run home run from Erik Castro (his 14th of the season). Garcia doubled in another run in the seventh.
Lancaster over Bakersfield 3-2
Who knew it was this easy? I asked David Rollins for a win via twitter yesterday afternoon and he obliged! Rollins (5H 1BB 3SO) went six innings and allowed two runs via the long ball on his way to his eighth win of the season. Jonas Dufek pitched a perfect two innings, striking out three, and Travis Ballew allowed one hit and struck out one in the ninth to earn his 17th save of the season. The 'Hawks did all of their scoring in the third as Andrew Aplin (2x4) drove one out with two ducks on the pond.
Quad Cities over Lake County 7-4
Colton Cain got the start and allowed three runs on six hits and three walks over four innings. He was followed by two scoreless innings from Daniel Minor (1H 1BB 3SO) and two more scoreless innings from Mitch Lambson (3H 1SO). Juan Minaya gave up the final Lake County run in the ninth. The River Bandits came from behind with three in the fourth on a Jordan Scott bases clearing triple. Scott drove in two more in the sixth with an RBI single before being driven in by Carlos Correa's seventh home run of the season. Rio Ruiz and Brian Blasik both doubled in the game. And the Bandits were busy on the base paths as well as Scott stole his 21st of the season, Teoscar Hernandez stole his 20th of the season, and Ruiz and Dan Gulbransen each stole one as well.
Tri-City over Hudson Valley 4-3
Starter Tanner Bushue (5IP 5H 3R 2BB 2SO) got the win and was followed by scoreless relief from Albert Minnis (0.1IP 1H), Adrian Houser (2IP 1H 1SO), J.D. Osborne (0.2IP 0H) and Richard Rodriguez (1IP 2H). The ValleyCats got on the board with two in the second on a Jon Kemmer (2x3 BB) home run, and got two more in the fifth as Mike Martinez (2x4) drove in one with a double and later came around to score on a wild pitch. Ernesto Genoves had two hits as well.

The Astros scored early with runs driven in by Brett Booth, Jacob Nottingham and Jose Solano (2x4 R) in the first, and late with Javaris Reynolds (2x2 BB) driving in the pivotal run in the eighth. Yonathan Mejia was two-for-three with a double, walk and run scored. Brett Booth, who was hitting .308/.431/.462 in 16 games, tweeted that he was on his way to join the Tri-City team after Monday's game.
DSL Astros over DSL Mariners 5-1 (Completion of 7/4 suspended game)
Harold Arauz pitched the first three innings without allowing a run and was followed by five from Gerardo Juarez (5H 1R/0ER 1BB 5SO) and one perfect inning from Yonquelys Martinez. Jean Estrella was one-for-four with a double; Alexander Melendez was one-for-four with two RBI; and Luis Payano was four-for-four and scored twice.
DSL Mariners over DSL Astros 3-2 in 7 innings
Geronimo Franzua gave up all three Mariner runs in his two and two-thirds innings and was followed by scoreless outings from Cristhopher Santamaria and Juan Delis. The Astros scored both of their runs in the second inning on a Jarico Reynoso (1x2 BB SB) RBI single. Alexander Melendez and Kristian Trompiz were both two-for-three with a run scored.
Player of the Day: Jordan Scott had a heckuva day, going two for two-for-four with a triple, walk, stolen base, run scored and driving in five of the seven Quad Cities runs.
Pitcher of the Day: Samil de los Santos did a great job keeping a razor thin margin intact and allowing his team to win late. Only two singles and no walks over four innings? Nice job. Honorable mention goes to Brett Oberholtzer.

DSL Season Post-Mortem
The DSL season is mercifully over. It was not a good one. The DSL represents the one failure by the Astros farm system to improve their record from the prior year. (Heck, you were already in a bad mood because it's Monday -- why not pile on a bit?) With that said, here's how this season compared to last season.
2011 Win Percentage - .403
2012 Win Percentage - .319
2011 Runs Scored - Runs Allowed = Run Differential - 306 - 391 = (85)
2012 Runs Scored - Runs Allowed = Run Differential - 254 - 383 = (129)
2011 Team ERA & WHIP - 4.71 & 1.625
2012 Team ERA & WHIP - 4.19 & 1.494
2011 Team Batting Line - .245/.339/.337
2012 Team Batting Line - .215/.301/.285
Believe it or not, there were actually three teams with lower win percentages this season. The biggest difference between 2011 and 2012 was the total lack of offense. Pitching improved slightly while offensive categories went from above average to the bottom two or three in the league.
Were there any bright spots? Yes, there were a couple of players with good seasons that will bear watching.
SS/2B Luis Reynoso led the team in batting average with a .281 mark and in OBP at .382 while ranking third in SLG at .363. And he won't turn 18 until next week.
1B Mesac Laguna led the team in several offensive categories, but he did so as the only 20-year old position player on a team on which 12 of 17 position players were 17 or 18 during the season.
At 18, RHP Samil de los Santos compiled the second most innings on the team as he pitched in 12 games (nine starts) with a 2.50 ERA, 1.075 WHIP, 9.8 SO/9, 3.15 SO/BB ratio and a .197 batting average allowed.
The 17-year old LHP Edwin Villarroel led the team in innings pitched and in ERA (2.25), but needs serious improvement in his SO/BB ratio as he struck out only 2.9 per nine innings while walking 3.9 per nine. But since he just turned 17 in May, he definitely has time to develop.
In 17 appearances (one start), LHP Javier Saucedo was 5-4 with a 3.21 ERA and a 1.322 WHIP. He had 6.2 SO/9 but an even worse walk rate than Villarroel as he walked 4.7 per nine innings pitched. He will be turning 19 in a month.
A total of 24 out of 37 players who appeared for the DSL team in 2012 were either 17 or 18 which keeps me from being very hard on the team, but also keeps me from getting very excited about anyone either. But if even one player from this group eventually appears on a major league roster, the year and the team will be deemed a rousing success in hindsight.
The news all gets better from here on out. I will look at the GCL Astros later in the week.

The 17-year old LHP Edwin Villarroel led the team in innings pitched and in ERA (2.25), but needs serious improvement in his SO/BB ratio as he struck out only 2.9 per nine innings while walking 3.9 per nine. But since he just turned 17 in May, he definitely has time to develop.
In 17 appearances (one start), LHP Javier Saucedo was 5-4 with a 3.21 ERA and a 1.322 WHIP. He had 6.2 SO/9 but an even worse walk rate than Villarroel as he walked 4.7 per nine innings pitched. He will be turning 19 in a month.
A total of 24 out of 37 players who appeared for the DSL team in 2012 were either 17 or 18 which keeps me from being very hard on the team, but also keeps me from getting very excited about anyone either. But if even one player from this group eventually appears on a major league roster, the year and the team will be deemed a rousing success in hindsight.
The news all gets better from here on out. I will look at the GCL Astros later in the week.

Minor League Recaps
Monday's Games
DSL Astros over DSL Athletics 4-0
Samil de los Santos sparkled in this one as he allowed only one hit and two walks over five innings of work with eight strikeouts. Geronimo Franzua, Jesus Castillo and Angel Heredia (W, 1-1) combined to provide hitless relief (although Franzua did allow three walks in his 0.1 inning and had to be bailed out by Castillo). CF Jarico Reynoso's name keeps popping up on these recaps as he is starting to really excel at the plate. In Monday's game, he was three-for-five, and he is hitting .353/.371/.382 over his last 10 games.
GCL Astros at GCL Marlins - Postponed
Johnson City over Greeneville 8-2 in 7 innings (Game 1)
Adrian Houser got roughed up more than a little as he surrendered all eight of the Johnson City runs on eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched. Mike Hauschild and Andrew Walter combined for scoreless relief but Greeneville wasn't able to scratch anything across after the third inning. A Michael Martinez walk followed by doubles from D'Andre Toney and Angel Ibanez accounted for Greeneville's two runs. Ricky Gingras had the only other Astros hit as they were held to three.

Lance McCullers gave up one hit and four walks with four strikeouts in four innings in his Appy League debut. Joe Musgrove also had his debut and gave up one run on four hits in 1.2 innings of work. Euris Quezada was charged with a blown save and a loss. Quezada, Scott Zuloaga and Michael Dimock combined to allow four runs in the final inning to seal Greeneville's fate. The Astros only managed four hits including a double from Jean Batista and an RBI double from Angel Ibanez.
Tri-City over Mahoning Valley 5-1
Brilliant pitching from Tri-City. Again. Brady Rodgers went to 5-2 on the season as he allowed only one run on five hits with eight strikeouts over six innings as was followed with a masterful three-inning performance in which Jeremiah Meiners gave up only one hit and no walks with four strikeouts. Joe Sclafani had a big day, going two-for-three with an RBI, walk, run scored and two stolen bases. Preston Tucker hit his second home run of the season and got a second RBI on a sac fly. Jobduan Morales tripled and scored. The ValleyCats were in thief mode as they stole a total of five bases, including one each from Catfish Elkins (as Austin prefers to be called apparently), Andrew Aplin and Ryan Dineen.
Lexington over Hagerstown 3-1
Mike Foltynewicz got his lucky 13th win as he allowed only two hits with seven strikeouts in his six innings of work. Murilo Gouvea pitched two scoreless innings of work before giving way to Dayan Diaz who gave up the lone Hagerstown run on his way to his 17th save. I didn't watch the game, but it was apparently a wild one as Hagerstown's pitching coach was ejected in the second and their batting coach was ejected in the eighth inning; and Lexington manager Ivan de Jesus was ejected in between, in the seventh. Lexington only managed four hits but took advantage of wild pitching from the Suns (two wild pitches, a balk and two hit batters) and Delino DeShields' speed as he scored Lexington's first run on a ground out after walking, stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch. It was DeShields 81st steal of the season. Matt Duffy, alas, was one of the hit batters and has now been plunked 34 times this season, four times in the last two games. Ouch.

Midland over Corpus Christi 8-4
This game was pretty much over in the first inning as starter Matt Heidenreich allowed five runs on six hits without recording an out. Jake Buchanan, newly back with the Corpus team, came out of the 'pen and allowed two runs on five hits in his four innings of work. Adalberto Flores allowed the final run in his 2.2 innings and Alex Sogard pitched an uneventful 1.1 innings. Drew Locke was three-for-five with a double and an RBI.
Salt Lake over Oklahoma City 4-3 in 10 innings
Ross Seaton did a very good job in his second start for the Redhawks allowing one run on three hits in 5.1 innings. Mark Hamburger allowed two runs and Hector Ambriz gave up the winning run in the 10th. In between Juan Valdez pitched a perfect 1.1 innings. Oklahoma City did all of their scoring with two outs in the fifth inning on a Brandon Barnes single, a Jimmy Paredes RBI double and a Fernando Martinez two-run jack.
Player of the Day: I'm going with Tri-City SS Joe Sclafani for a very effective day at the plate and on the basepaths.
Pitchers of the Day: Mike Foltynewicz gets the nod with lucky win #13. His girlfriend did not call him a stud muffin this time which I find to be a gross oversight. Folty, you are my Pitcher of the Day and my Stud Muffin of the Day. Honorable mention has to go to Samil de los Santos, Lance McCullers, Brady Rodgers, Jeremiah Meiners and Ross Seaton for their good outings.

Signed by the Astros as a non-drafted free agent from the Dominican Republic in 2011, Samil spent his first professional season with the DSL Astros. In 9 games (2 starts), he compiled a 7.04 ERA and a 2.152 WHIP. However, he did have a bit more success as a reliever, lowering his ERA to 3.86.
