FRIDAY'S RESULTS

DSL  Astros over DSL Royals 7-6
LHP Edwin Villoreal got the win as he allowed four runs (NONE earned) on six hits and two walks. LHP Javier Saucedo gave up two runs in 1.1 innings of relief, and RHP Johan Arias got his second save of the season. 2B Luis Reynosa was one of the stars of the game with two hits, including a double, and two RBIs, but he also had his fourth and fifth errors of the season. 3B Randy Cesar was two-for-four with a home run and two RBIs, and 1B Mesac Laguna was two-for-three with a walk.

Lexington over Greensboro 6-2
I know I've reported this before, but it's worth repeating. Mike Foltynewicz is really, really good. Folty got his eighth win while lowering his ERA from 2.14 to 2.07. He did so against the Northern Division leaders. Over seven innings, he gave up two runs (one earned) on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts and a solo home run. Murilo Gouvea pitched an effective eighth inning, but had to be bailed out by Carlos Quevedo (S, 3) to get the final out after Gouvea walked the bases loaded in the ninth. Matt Duffy was the star of the night as he went three-for-four with his tenth home run and two RBIs, but it was a team effort as all of the starters got at least one hit except for Justin Gominsky who still managed two walks. Delino DeShields had his sixth caught stealing of the season.

New Orleans over Oklahoma City 6-1
All good things must come to an end. Oklahoma City had won nine in a row (14 in a row at home) before Friday's loss. Aneury Rodriguez (L, 2-6) got the loss as he allowed four runs on four hits and four walks with four strikeouts and a home run over five innings. Mickey Storey pitched two effective innings of relief while Chris Hicks and Juan Abreu each got nicked for a run in their respective innings. The Redhawks lone run came via a double from Scott Moore driving in Jimmy Paredes who had tripled in front of him.

Inland Empire over Lancaster 5-4 in 11 innings
Jorge de Leon gave up three runs over five innings; Zach Grimmett allowed one run in 2.1 innings of relief; and Jose Trinidad was the recipient of a hard luck loss as he pitched 3.1 innings of relief and allowed only one unearned run with two outs in the 11th inning. Telvin Nash was one-for-five with a double and three strikeouts. He has now struck out 101 times in only 207 at bats. Ouch! Ben Heath was one-for-five with a double and two RBIs. Chris Epps had two hits and scored a run.

GAME OF THE DAY
Corpus Christi over Midland 8-5

What went right: Exceptional relief pitching that kept the game in check.

The Hooks jumped all over Midland starter Sonny Gray, chasing him out of the game after allowing six runs in only 2.2 innings. With Jake Buchanan cruising along through the first four innings, it looked as though this one might be a laugher. Not so fast there, Sparky. After one out and and a spectacularly bad throwing error* from Jonathan Villar that turned a single into a double, the wheels came off for Buchanan. IMHO, he got rattled and quit trusting in his stuff which had been sparkling up to that point. After 4.2 innings and five runs, he was out and the bullpen took over. Erick Abreu, Josh Zeid and Jason Stoffel combined to allow only one hit with six strikeouts in the final 4.1 innings. Josh Zeid, in particular, had fantastic stuff and totally controlled the hitters. Jake Goebbert benefited from the WTH effect going three-for-four a matter of hours after I interviewed him. Kody Hinze and Chris Wallace each had two RBIs.

Jake Buchanan - 4.2IP 9H 5R 1BB 2SO
Erick Abreu (W, 6-2) - 2.1IP 1H 0R 0BB 4SO
Josh Zeid - 1IP 0H 0R 0BB 1SO
Jason Stoffel (S, 10) - 1IP 0H 0R 0BB 1SO

Jonathan Villar 2x5 SO R
Brandon Wikoff - 1x4 2B BB SO 2R
Jose Martinez - 2x5 RBI SO 2R
Kody Hinze - 1x3 2RBI BB SO R
Jake Goebbert - 3x4 2B RBI R
Chris Wallace - 1x4 2RBI

What went wrong: *The throwing error from Jonathan Villar was not really that bad. It might have been a good play had the first baseman been 18 feet tall and located in the 10th row of the first base seats.

PITCHER OF THE DAY
Folty, Folty, Folty ... How do I love thee. Let me count the ways. Frankly, I keep waiting for Folty to have a spectacularly bad regression type outing, but he has just been locked in as of late. Fred, where are you going to put him if he keeps wearing out Sally League hitters this way? Better start thinking about it.

PLAYERS OF THE DAY
Matt Duffy's newly found power stroke (10 HR in 59 games this season; 2HR in 63 games in 2011) appears to be the real deal!
