Astros Minor League Recaps

Sacramento 7, Oklahoma City 4

OKC home runs: Max Stassi (7, solo in 3rd)

The RedHawks were unable to take advantage of an Omaha loss earlier in the evening as they were foiled in their sweep attempt.

Max Stassi's 7th home run of the season led off the 3rd inning. Later in the inning, Preston Tucker hit a ground ball that scored Jio Mier. Tucker beat the double play, but it turned into a 4-6-3-1 double play as Jonathan Villar was nailed at the plate. In the 7th, OKC got a pair of RBI singles from Villar and L.J. Hoes. Villar finished 3-5 with a steal (22, 36 season), while Ronald Torreyes and Carlos Perez both finished 2-4.

Luis Cruz allowed 5 runs on 6 hits, walked 4, and struck out 1 over 2.2 innings. Tommy Shirley tagged in for 2.1 scoreless, allowing 2 hits and striking out 2. Richard Rodriguez allowed a 2-run homer to Shane Peterson in the 6th. He went 2 innings and allowed 2 other hits while striking out 1. Jorge De Leon allowed a hit and walked 1 in a scoreless 8th.

Tonight, the RedHawks will begin a 4-game set against the new-look El Paso Chihuahuas. In game 1, Asher Wojciechowski will take on Matt Wisler. First pitch is at 7:05.

Midland 15, Corpus Christi 2

W- Shawn Haviland (6-7)
L- Josh Hader (0-1, 9-3 season)

CC home runs: None.

The Hooks were down by as much as 14-1 in this one. Ugh.

The 6-9 hitters in the lineup had all the hits: Conrad Gregor (6) and Carlos Perdomo (7) had 2 apiece, while Tyler Heineman (8) and Tony Kemp (9) had 1 each. Perdomo hit an RBI double in the 4th and Heineman had an RBI single in the 6th.

Josh Hader only lasted 2 innings and allowed 5 runs on 5 hits, walked 4, and struck out 3. David Rollins was the first man out; he allowed 5 runs (3 inherited runners charged to him) on 7 hits (solo homer), walked 1, and struck out 1. He failed to retire any of the 3 batters he faced in the 5th. Chris Devenski came on to pitch the 5th and allowed 4 runs of his own on 3 hits, walked 4, and struck out 2. Juan Minaya and Travis Ballew were the only 2 Hooks pitchers to escape unscathed; Minaya walked 1 and fanned 2 in the 6th, while Ballew walked 1 and struck out 1 in the 7th. R.J. Alaniz allowed a run, a single, walked 2, and struck out 1 in the 8th.

In game 2 of this series, Mark Appel will take on Chris Jensen at 6:30.

Lancaster 8, High Desert 7

W- Kent Emanuel (8-4, 8-6 season)
L- Will Mathis (5-6)

Lancaster home runs: Roberto Peña (11, 2-run in 2nd), Jon Kemmer (10, 14 season; 3-run in 7th)

The JetHawks rallied from a 7-4 deficit with 4 after stretch time, capped off by Jon Kemmer's blast.

Matt Heidenreich only lasted 3 innings as he allowed 6 runs (5 earned) on 10 hits (solo homer), walked 1, and struck out 2. His bullpen backed him up with 6 innings of 1-run ball. Pat Christensen allowed a run on 2 hits and struck out 3 over 2 innings, and Kent Emanuel restored order to the game as he allowed just 1 hit, walked 1, and struck out 7 over 4 scoreless frames.

Roberto Peña's 2-run homer came after Kemmer led off the bottom of the 2nd with a single. Kemmer had an RBI triple and Peña brought him home with a sac fly in the 3rd. Brett Phillips, Rio Ruiz, and Jack Mayfield all reached safely to begin the bottom of the 7th. Tyler White grounded into a force out that scored Phillips, and one batter later, Kemmer put Lancaster in front with his 14th home run of the year. Kemmer finished a double shy of the cycle and scored 3 runs. Danry Vásquez went 2-4 with a double.

Vince Velasquez will start game 2 of this series. He'll face Lars Huijer at 8:30.

Cedar Rapids 5, Quad Cities 3

W- Mat Batts (2-0)
L- Albert Minnis (2-2)

QC home runs: Marc Wik (4, 6 season; solo in 1st)

The Banditos held a 3-1 lead after the first third of the game, but the Kernels scored 4 unanswered, which included a 3-run 8th, to close it out.

Marc Wik opened the scoring with his solo homer in the 1st. Brett Booth scored on a wild pitch in the 2nd, and Wik added an RBI single in the 3rd. He, Booth, and Jose Fernandez all had 2-hit nights.

Blaine Sims went 6 innings and allowed 2 runs on 11 hits (solo homer), walked 1, and struck out 6. Albert Minnis couldn't hold the lead as he allowed 3 runs in the 8th, one of which was earned. He went 2 innings and also allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3.

The River Bandits will look to avoid the sweep as Chris Lee takes on Stephen Gonsalves at 6:35.

New York-Penn League All-Star Game: North 1, South 1

Yes, this game ended in a tie. Seriously.

Nick Tanielu was named the MVP of the game as he went 3-3 with an RBI single in the 5th for the North All-Stars. Jamie Ritchie got the start at catcher and was 0-2 with a strikeout. D.J. Fisher entered the game in the 6th and went 0-1.

Ryan Thompson pitched the 6th and allowed a hit.

The ValleyCats return to action tonight as they host Vermont for 2 games. They have not announced a starter for tonight's game yet. First pitch is at 6:00.

Greeneville 7, Kingsport 4

W- Zach Davis (2-0)
L- Andrew Church (3-5)
S- Eric Peterson (5)

Greeneville home runs: Bryan Muniz (2, 2-run in 4th)

The Appy Astros split this weird 4-game set with Kingsport as they busted out for 5 in the 4th inning.

Ydarqui Marte put Greeneville on the board with an RBI single in the 4th. Muniz's 2-run homer put them in the lead. Edwin Medina then hit an RBI single, and an error on the play allowed Tony Nuñez to score. Muniz, who finished 2-4, added an RBI single in the 5th, and Marte ripped an RBI double in the top of the 9th. He also finished 2-4, as did Medina. Yonathan Mejia finished 3-5 with a double and 2 runs scored.

Austin Nicely went 4 innings and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4. Samil De Los Santos allowed 2 runs on 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 1 in the 5th. Zach Davis allowed a hit and struck out 4 over 3 scoreless, and Eric Peterson closed it out, striking out 1 in a 1-2-3 9th.

Greeneville is in 4th, but they're a game behind Kingsport and Johnson City and 2.5 behind Elizabethton in the playoff race with 9 games remaining. They have today off. On Thursday, they'll travel up to Princeton, West Virginia to begin a 3-game series with the Rays.

GCL Phillies 5, GCL Astros 1

W- Elniery Garcia (2-1)
L- Starlyng Sanchez (0-2, 1-5 season)
S- Jared Fisher (2)

GCL home runs: None.

The Kissimmee Stros had the bases loaded with no outs in the 9th, so they weren't completely out of this game just yet. Randy Cesar went 3-4 with an RBI single in that 9th inning. However, after that, they were retired in order to end the game.

Ambiorix De Leon allowed a hit and struck out 1 over 2 scoreless. Starlyng Sanchez pitched the next 3 innings and allowed 3 runs on 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2. Juan Hernandez came on for the 6th, but he did not record an out and left the game with an elbow injury. He walked 1 and hit another batter, and both of them scored. Alejandro Solarte came on in relief and allowed both of the runners he inherited from Hernandez to score. One came on a force out and the other on a double. Dan Mengden allowed a hit and struck out 3 over 2 scoreless.

The Kissimmee Stros are currently in a game against the Yankees 1.

DSL Athletics 10, DSL Astros Blue in 7 innings

W- Ivan Andueza (2-4)
L- Moreno Polanco (2-3)

Blue home runs: Wander Franco (4, grand slam in 7th)

This game was called due to rain.

All 7 of the Blue team's runs came in the bottom of the 7th and they only had 2 hits in the inning. Carlos Canelon was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and then Andy Piñeda and Marcos Almonte drew bases-loaded walks. Jonathan Matute struck out for the 2nd out, but Wander Franco emptied the bases with a grand slam. He had 2 of the Blue team's 3 hits; the other belonged to Jake Bowey.

Moreno Polanco went 2 innings and allowed 4 unearned runs on 2 hits and walked 3. Jose Rosario allowed a run on 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2 in the 3rd. Saul Martinez allowed a hit and struck out 1 over 2 scoreless. Ezequiel Madera allowed 5 runs on 4 hits and walked 2 while only getting 1 out in the 6th. Yan De La Cruz pitched 1.2 scoreless, allowing 2 hits, walking 2, and striking out 2.

The Blue team is currently in a game against the Dodgers.

DSL Astros Orange 7, DSL Marlins 3 in 10 innings

W- Abdiel Saldaña (4-1)
L- Cristian Olmos (0-2)

Orange home runs: None.

The Orange team broke a 3-3 tie with 4 in the first extra frame.

Angel De Leon hit an RBI single in the 2nd to open the scoring. Jesus Bermejo added an RBI groundout later in the inning. Edgar Lorenzo hit an RBI double in the 8th which put the Orange team up 3-2.

The Marlins scored 1 in the bottom of the 9th to tie, but the Orange team quickly regained control. Jose Benjamin hit an RBI single in the 10th. De Leon followed with an RBI double, and Bermejo added a 2-run single.

Gerald Benzant went 4.1 innings and allowed 2 runs on 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 7. Abdiel Saldaña pitched the next 4.2 innings and allowed a run on 3 hits and struck out 4. Bryan Abreu pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the 10th.

The Orange team is currently in a game against the Rangers 2.
