PCL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES (BEST OF FIVE)
Fresno won the series 3-2
Tuesday the 15th: Round Rock 9 over Fresno 8 in 12 innings
Wednesday the 16th: Fresno 3 over Round Rock 1
Friday the 18th: Round Rock 6 over Fresno 2
Saturday the 19th: Fresno 2 over Round Rock 1
Sunday the 20th: Fresno 7 over Round Rock 3
Mark Appel got the start and was coasting along very nicely until he got to two outs in the sixth inning and served up a two-run home run to Round Rock first baseman Drew Robinson and was pulled from the game with a 4-3 lead. Thanks to solid relief from Jordan Jankowski, Kevin Chapman and James Hoyt, Appel still walked away with the win and ended his day with six hits, three runs, two walks and 10 strikeouts over 5.2 innings.
Down 1-0 going to the bottom of the first, the Grizzlies offense wasted no time getting to work as Tyler White hit a two-run no-doubter to left field to take the lead. They added two more runs by way of a Tony Kemp sac fly in the second and a Kemp RBI single in the fourth. The home run allowed by Appel made it 4-3 in the top of the sixth, but the Grizzlies got some breathing room back in the seventh as Alex Presley contributed a solo homer and a Robbie Grossman double drove in two runs later in the inning. And that was more than enough to earn the Grizzlies the first PCL Championship in franchise history.
Tony Kemp earned MVP honors for the series. For the day, he was 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. For the entire postseason, Kemp hit .405/.478/.486 with three doubles, nine RBI, seven walks and two stolen bases in nine games.
The Grizzlies got to celebrate on Sunday, but their work isn't done. They are now headed to El Paso to face the International League Champion Columbus Clippers, Cleveland's AAA affiliate, in a one-game playoff for bragging rights as the ultimate AAA Championship team. The game will be at 7:05 CST Tuesday (airing nationally on the NBC Sports Network) with recently promoted RHP Chris Devenski scheduled to take the mound for the Grizzlies. This place is nuts pic.twitter.com/ymC0Z9jSNG— Bryant-Jon Anteola (@Banteola_TheBee) September 20, 2015
