Astros Rule 5 Draft Results

The Astros didn't lose any players in either the major league phase or the minor league phases of the Rule 5 draft on Thursday nor did they draft anyone in the major league phase of the draft. They did, however, pick up right-hander Octavio Acosta from the Mets in the AAA phase of the draft. Acosta has a 3.21 ERA and a 1.200 WHIP in four minor league seasons. He spent 2015 on loan to the Mexican League where he had a 8.68 ERA and a 1.463 WHIP in 28 innings. He is currently playing the Mexican Pacific Winter League.

Former Astros on the move in the minor league phase of the draft were LHP Mitch Lambson who was drafted by the Brewers from the Braves; RHP Ariel Ovando, a converted OF who was picked up from the Cubs by the Angels; and RHP Enderson Franco who was picked up from the Marlins by the Braves.

As a reminder, these are the players who were in danger of being taken. They all remain Astros for the time being.

  1. Based upon the rush by the rest of baseball to acquire an Astros minor league prospect I have to wonder ... are we over-valuing our guys or does everyone else have their heads firmly tucked between their cheeks? A third alternative might be that we've already traded away every prospect that the other baseball GMs might have coveted ... what do you think?

    1. I honestly don't know, but I'm really surprised that nobody took a flyer on Devo or Guduan in particular.

    2. The only thing that I think might have hurt Devo was the spell he had from mid-June through July (he was 7-0 before the TL ASG) until he was shut down for a couple of weeks. Quite a few of us fans could tell that he was tired but I think that Chris's drive might have got in the way to tell them that he needed a break. After that time off you could tell the difference even though he didn't get a regular season win during the rest of the season. Chris isn't going to overpower you with his stuff but he will keep them off balance with his secondary pitches and doesn't issue many walks. What hurt Guduan is his command/control of his pitches and quite a few teams probably saw a much better product out there given that he's been at the lower levels for the last four years. If he can learn to harness that he will be a lights out relief pitcher.

  2. Shhhhhh Jayne. Don't want to keep reminding them of what they missed. Already planning my trips to Fresno to see Devo and Musgrove.

  5. I was pleasantly surprised we didn't lose some guys - I thought we may lose 4-5 players. It may be that in the case of Devenski, Hauschild etc the upside isn't much more than we see and in the case of Guduan, Teoscar etc they still have something to show in terms of development at AA ball. I really think the MILB top 10 rankings for the Astros is more indicative of who the scouts really value. I do think that Guduan and Teoscar in particular, have great upside.
