Game 2 of the Midwest League Championship Series is in the books and it was a good one ... at least for the River Bandits. Patrick Sandoval (W, 6.0IP, 6H, 1BB, 2SO) and Salvador Montano (S, 3.0IP, 1H, 1BB, 4SO) combined on the shutout on the road, giving Quad Cities a 2-0 advantage in the best-of-five series as they head home for the final game(s) of the series. And the pitching staff had to be sharp in this one. The River Bandits took a 1-0 lead in the first with an Abraham Toro RBI single, but that's where it stood until the sixth inning. A lead-off double in that frame from Wander Franco followed by a Kristian Trompiz single blossomed into two runs as Chas McCormick and Troy Sieber each drove in a run to make it 3-0. Trompiz was also involved in the scoring in the eighth inning as he singled and came around to score on a ground out and a Colin Moran single (I only feel slightly guilty that the rehabbing major leaguer has been so good in the Midwest League postseason). J.J. Matijevic doubled in the final run of the game to give the Bandits a 5-0 lead and to seal the win.
And now Quad Cities only needs to win one more game out of the next three at home to claim the championship. I do not wish to tempt the baseball gods, but I do like the odds on that one.
Game 3 will be at 6:35 CT on Saturday with TBD facing Adrian Morejon (0-0, 1.50 in one game in the postseason).
