W- Jonathan Bermúdez (1-0, 1-2 season)
L- Reid Birlingmair (2-3)
S- Humberto Castellanos (4)

QC home runs: Ross Adolph (4, solo in 4th)

The Banditos earned the split as they erupted for six runs in the 3rd and then got a couple more runs to keep the Snappers at bay. Let's fast-forward to the 3rd. Quad Cities entered the inning trailing 4-0.

Orlando Marquez led off that huge 3rd with a double and he came in with Quad Cities' first run in game two on a single from Michael Wielansky. Ross Adolph drew a walk, but Wielansky was forced out at third. Adolph and Austin Dennis both advanced on another groundout, so they needed something to keep the inning alive. That something turned out to be a two-run single from Alex McKenna and suddenly the rally was back on. Ruben Castro walked, Freúdis Nova hit an RBI single to bring McKenna home, and David Hensley whacked a two-run double.

Adolph launched a home run to lead off the 4th and he scored the final run of the evening on a single from Jeremy Peña. McKenna, Nova, and Hensley all had two hits in game two.

R.J. Freure went 3.1 innings and allowed six runs (four earned, two inherited runners charged to him) on five hits, walked three, and struck out nine. The ValleyCats scored a run in each of the first three innings and then as they held on to a one-run lead, they busted out for three runs in the 7th.

After being drafted by the Astros in the 4th round this past June out of Cal Poly, OF Alex McKenna quickly got to work with the short season A Tri-City ValleyCats and has been one of their most consistent performers this summer. In his first 30 professional games, he is hitting .315/.409./.519 with five doubles, one triple, five home runs and six stolen bases. I had the opportunity to sit down with McKenna last month at "The Joe" (Joseph L. Bruno Stadium in Troy, New York) in an attempt to get to know him a little better. The impression I came away with was one of an intelligent, inquisitive player, one who is very grounded and even-keeled.

Asked about his draft experience, McKenna told me that he had "no idea" that the Astros were seriously considering him. "I didn't talk to a single Astros scout or person in the office the entire year so it was definitely a surprise when my name was called. It was cool. Not what I was expecting, but when you get drafted by the defending World Champs, there's definitely worse situations. I was excited."

In his brief time as a professional, McKenna said his biggest accomplishment may very well be "just getting adjusted to things as a professional." He said, "It's a little different from college obviously. Just adjusting to pitching. Adjusting to what the everyday schedule's going to be like is the biggest thing I think. Just trying to acclimate myself as much as possible to make sure that I'm getting my stuff done, day in and day out, what I've got to do to prepare for every game, for every practice."

Although McKenna is highly regarded for his offensive abilities, that is still his primary focus right now, "Offensively, I want to work on elevating the baseball more and unlocking my power because I know I have it in my body, but it's about translating it into the game. I can do it in batting practice, I can do it in settings where I'm just working on mechanics, but translating it into the game when there's consistent velocity is the biggest key for me. I've seen a little of it so far, but I'm trying to tap into it more as the season goes on."

The one thing I did not see much written about was McKenna's defense so I asked him to characterize his defensive capabilities. "I think I'm not the prototypical blazing fast centerfielder, but I take a lot of pride in my routes and how efficient they are. And I think that's why I'm able to play a pretty good centerfield, at least at this level right now, and I want to play that as along as I can until they tell me I can't. I've played all three positions. I've played left, right and center and I'm comfortable at all three, but I would love to play centerfield and stay there as long as I can. I'm still working on some things out there as far as getting rid of the ball quicker, I'm trying to get my arm a little bit stronger, just the basic stuff. But going out there right now, I feel very confident in my ability to play defense," said McKenna.

McKenna acknowledges that his hit tool is probably his best tool, but he feels that the rest of his tools are solid. "I try and make sure my game is consistent in everything I do. I don't want to be weak in anything, and I also don't want to be one-dimensional and only be able to do one thing. Working on the other tools, my other qualities I have as a baseball player, and try to get those to eventually become plus tools is my goal and that's what this organization does a good job of is player development. That's what I'm looking forward to, seeing how far I can push the envelope and see where my ability takes me."

As McKenna works to improve in all areas of his game, he embraces the information that he is given. Tri-City Manager Jason Bell has enjoyed coaching McKenna of whom he said, "It's been awesome to work with him because he is always curious to why we do what we do and why the Astros believe in what we believe in. He asks a lot of questions, moreso than most of the players, because he wants to know more and he wants to be able to apply it to his game right away with the facts on why we do things. So if it's outfield, if it's baserunning, if it's offense, hitting, whatever it is, he always is there to ask questions which I like as a coach. It challenges me more, but at the same time, it's because he wants to learn and grow as a player."

McKenna grew up a Dodgers fan so being signed by the Astros was "a little bit weird" for him. "Honestly, I like the Dodgers because they're the closest team to me. But it was a little weird, for sure, hearing everybody (remarking about me) going to the team that beat the Dodgers in the World Series. But there couldn't be a better situation, I think, for myself. My family and everyone is super happy that I ended up where I am and it's a good situation so far."

Even with the Dodgers loss, McKenna enjoyed the back-and-forth drama of the postseason as a fan of baseball, "That just goes to show how talented these guys are. When they're put in the biggest stage, everyone seems to play better than their ability. And that's what it's kind of about when you're playing in those big playoff games and some guys rise to the occasion and it's pretty cool to watch that stuff."

In the offseason, McKenna will be back home enjoying his time with family and friends, "I live in California and I'm going to be living there during the offseason so (you) definitely don't run out of stuff to do out there. This offseason for me is just going to be very baseball heavy, honestly, because I want to work out, get a little bit stronger, get a little bit faster, work on my swing, kind of work on my game. This is a big offseason. They say the first offseason is the biggest one. You can see what happens when you come back and if you can make your game a little better. So I'm really focused on that, but in the offseason, maybe I'll go camping or something with my family during the winter. That's about it. I don't have too many plans right now. I like to hang out with my family and friends."

I often end my conversation with a player by asking him, "What should I ask you that I haven't already?" It's more of a way to let the player add some random parting thought than a real question. I think McKenna was the first player to ever actually answer the question. He told me I should ask him what we could expect of him on a daily basis. He responded to his own question, "I would say that I just hope that people see that I'm a hard worker, I put in time and I don't take for granted the opportunity that I'm given. I'm going to put in 100% in this thing and see where it goes from there."

Thank you for your time, Alex, and best of luck as the season winds toward its conclusion.

Results for Wednesday, August 1, 2018

Nashville 5, Fresno 2

W- Eric Jokisch (4-9)
L- Cy Sneed (9-6)
S- Raúl Alcántara (4)

Fresno home runs: Nick Tanielu (3, 7 season; 2-run in 4th)

Nick Tanielu's two-run shot gave the Grizzlies the lead in the 4th inning, but the Sounds responded with a pair of two-run innings of their own to take the first game of this series.

Tanielu went 2-4 and his homer turned out to be Fresno's only scoring play of the evening. Garrett Stubbs went 4-4 with a stolen base (6).

Cy Sneed went five innings and allowed three runs on five hits (solo homer), walked five, and struck out four. Kent Emanuel allowed two runs on four hits in the 6th inning. Cionel Perez got two outs in the 7th, one via strikeout, but ran into trouble after allowing a hit and issuing a couple of walks to load the bases. Matt Ramsey bailed Cionel out by getting the last out of the 7th without incident and he went on to throw a scoreless 8th, walking one.

Rogelio Armenteros will get the start in game two. He'll take on James Naile at 7:05.

Corpus Christi 3, San Antonio 2 in 10 innings

W- Ralph Garza Jr. (6-0, 6-1 season)
L- T.J. Weir (2-1)

CC home runs: Randy César (10, solo in 3rd)

The Hooks walked off with a victory and earned the sweep. Corpus also gained a measure of revenge with the sweep; they were swept out of San Antonio last week after losing three one-run games.

Ryan Hartman went seven innings and allowed two runs on three hits (solo homer) and tied a career high by striking out 11. He also struck out 11 against San Antonio back on May 17. Kit Scheetz struck out three over 2.2 perfect innings and Ralph Garza Jr. got a grounder to record the final out of the 10th inning.

Ronnie Dawson tripled to lead off the bottom of the 1st and scored Corpus Christi's first run on a sac fly from Stephen Wrenn. Randy César cranked a solo shot in the 3rd. Ryne Birk started the bottom of the 10th in scoring position; he advanced on a deep flyball out from Lorenzo Quintana and won the game when he came home on an Aníbal Sierra sac fly. No one on either side finished with more than one hit.

Brock Dykxhoorn is scheduled to start the first game of a four-game set in Frisco. He'll face Jonathan Hernandez at 7:05.

Wilmington 2, Buies Creek 1

W- Justin Camp (2-1)
L- Tommy DeJuneas (0-1, 2-3 season)
S- Tyler Zuber (7)

BC home runs: Corey Julks (2, 6 season; solo in 1st)

The Blue Rocks came alive with a couple of runs in the 9th to snatch the win from the Carolina Stros.

Corey Julks smacked a solo homer in the 1st that turned out to be Buies Creek's only scoring play of the evening. His home run was the only extra-base hit in this game.

Brandon Bailey turned in eight dominant innings as he allowed just one hit, walked one, and struck out eight. Unfortunately for him, he did not factor into the decision after Wilmington scored twice against Tommy DeJuneas in the final frame. DeJuneas allowed two hits and walked one.

Buies Creek and Wilmington will conclude their series at 6:00 Eastern.\

Quad Cities 9, Clinton 1

W- Jairo Solís (2-4)
L- Ray Kerr (3-10)
S- Edgardo Sandoval (1)

QC home runs: Miguelangel Sierra 2 (9, solo in 2nd, solo in 7th), Marty Costes (2, solo in 3rd)

The Banditos blew this game open with four runs in the 3rd, which gave them a 6-1 lead.

Jairo Solís turned in 5.2 solid innings; the one run he allowed came on a homer. He allowed two other hits, walked one, and struck out seven. Edgardo Sandoval allowed four hits and struck out five over 3.1 scoreless innings to earn the save.

Marty Costes singled to lead off the 1st and Ruben Castro joined him on the bases by drawing a walk. Costes got caught stealing third and Castro took advantage by moving over to second while they were nabbing Costes. Castro advanced to third on a passed ball that was also ball four to David Hensley, who got caught stealing second, but again, Castro seized the opportunity to score the first run of the night.

Miguelangel Sierra smacked a solo homer in the 2nd and Costes launched one in the 3rd. Castro singled, Hensley flew out, and Chandler Taylor walked. Colton Shaver followed by ripping a two-run double and he came around to score on a base hit from Alfredo Angarita. Logan Mattix drew a one-out walk in the 4th, made it to third on Costes' double, and Castro brought them both in with a single. Sierra launched his second solo homer of the evening in the 7th to cap things off. Costes finished 3-4, while Castro, Sierra, and Angarita all turned in two-hit nights.

Chad Donato faces Scott Boches in game two of this series. First pitch is at 6:35.

Brooklyn 3, Tri-City 2

W- Trent Johnson (1-1)
L- Austin Hansen (1-1)
S- Yeudy Colón (3)

TC home runs: Alex McKenna (5, 2-run in 1st)

Both teams had one scoring play apiece and both of these plays were home runs. Unfortunately, the Cyclones' homer yielded more runs.

Alex McKenna opened the scoring with a two-run blast in the 1st inning. He's now homered in three consecutive games. Andy Piñeda finished 3-4 with a double.

R.J. Freure struck out three over three perfect innings. Cody Deason tagged in for 2.2 innings and had two runs charged to him when Austin Hansen allowed a three-run home run in the 6th. Deason allowed three hits, walked two, and struck out three during his stint on the mound. The homer was the only hit that Hansen allowed in 2.1 innings; he also walked one and struck out six.

Tri-City will kick off a three-game set with the Lowell Spinners tonight at 7:00 Eastern.

GCL Nationals 3, GCL Astros 1

W- Alfonso Hernandez (1-0)
L- Angel Macuare (1-3)
S- Joan Adon (2)

GCL home runs: Freúdis Nova (4, solo in 4th)

Freúdis Nova's solo blast in the 4th was the Palm Beach Stros' only scoring play. Andrés Santana went 2-4.

Angel Macuare allowed three runs on six hits (two-run homer), walked two, and struck out four. Daniel Bello walked two and struck out two in the 5th, and Ernesto Jaquez got the last three innings in his US debut; he walked one and struck out three.

DSL Astros 2, DSL Red Sox1 1

W- Wender Oberto (2-2)
L- Luis Colmenares (4-2)

DSL home runs: None.

The Academy allowed ten hits to the Red Sox but also held them to one run. They scored in the first inning and walked off with the win by scoring in the last inning of regulation.

Jojanse Torres allowed that run, which was unearned, on eight hits and fanned six in five innings. Wender Oberto allowed two hits and struck out four over four scoreless.

Franklin Pinto went 2-4 and scored both runs; he came home in the 1st when Victor Mascai grounded into a force out. He tripled to lead off the 9th and scored the winning run on a wild pitch. Jose Alvarez finished 2-3.

Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Tuesday, July 31, 2018

I don't even know why I'm doing this, but here goes.

Fresno was off

The Grizzlies will start a trip through Tennessee as they begin a three-game series in Nashville at 7:05. Cy Sneed will face Eric Jokisch.

Corpus Christi 5, San Antonio 4

W- Erasmo Pinales (3-4)
L- Andrés Muñoz (1-1)
S- Ronel Blanco (1, 5 season)

CC home runs: None.

Things escalated quickly in the final two innings as the Missions put up three in the 8th to take the lead and forced Corbin Martin to settle for a no-decision. The Hooks regained control with four in the bottom of the 8th, but the Missions wouldn't go quietly as they got one more run in the 9th. Fortunately, Corpus managed to escape with the win.

Martin was perfect through 6.2 innings before Ty France poked a single through the left side of the infield. France was the only man to reach against Martin in his seven innings; he struck out eight. Erasmo Pinales and Ronel Blanco both pitched an inning. Pinales coughed up the lead in the 8th by giving up a three-run homer to Taylor Kohlwey. He allowed one other hit, walked one, and struck out two. Blanco got taken deep by France with one out in the 9th but he pulled himself together to finish the game. The homer was the only hit that he allowed and he struck out one.

Ronnie Dawson doubled in his first plate appearance in the Texas League and scored the first run of the evening on an infield single from Randy César. This was the only scoring play of the game until it got crazy in the 8th.

All four Corpus Christi runs in the 8th came with two outs. Eduardo de Oleo hit an RBI single and advanced to second when Dawson walked. Stephen Wrenn brought de Oleo in with a single and César hit a two-run single to break a 3-3 tie. César finished 3-4 on the night.

Ryan Hartman will get the start as the Hooks look for the sweep. He'll take on Cal Quantrill at 7:05.

Buies Creek 7, Wilmington 2

W- Gabriel Valdez (6-4)
L- Andrés Sotillet (1-2)

BC home runs: J.J. Matijevic (11, 14 season; solo in 7th)

The Carolina Stros tied the series at two games apiece. They dropped the three-game set in Wilmington but opened up the three-game series at Campbell University with a win.

Peter Solomon, in his Carolina League debut, allowed four hits, walked one, and struck out five over four scoreless. He could've gone on a little longer had there not been a rain delay in the 4th inning. Gabriel Valdez was the first man out of the Buies Creek bullpen and allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits, walked one, and struck out six in his three innings of work. Yohan Ramirez got the last two innings and allowed one hit.

Cody Bohanek singled with one out in the 3rd and scored the first run of the evening on a Jonathan Arauz triple. Arauz would come in on a Corey Julks sac fly. The Carolina Stros added three more in the 5th on a two-run single from Bryan de la Cruz, who came around to score on a Chuckie Robinson double. Bohanek walked with one out in the 6th; he stole second and advanced to third on a bad throw down and then scored on a wild pitch that Julks struck out on. J.J. Matijevic went 2-3 and capped off the evening with a solo homer in the 7th. He and Bohanek scored two runs apiece.

The Carolina Stros and the Blue Rocks will square off again at 6:00 Eastern.

Cedar Rapids 8, Quad Cities 1

W- Edwar Colina (5-3)
L- Leovanny Rodriguez (4-4)
S- Jose Martinez (5)

QC home runs: Chandler Taylor (4, solo in 4th)

After sweeping the road portion of this four-game series, the home leg proved to be a debacle for the Banditos as they were outscored 16-1 and almost ended up on the wrong end of a no-hitter on Monday. Once again, the Kernels put this one away quickly and Quad Cities never threatened.

Chandler Taylor's solo blast in the 4th represented the lone Quad Cities scoring play. Marty Costes went 2-3.

Leovanny Rodriguez went 3.2 innings and allowed six runs on eight hits, walked one, and struck out two. Hansel Paulino made his Midwest League debut as the first man out of the Quad Cities bullpen and the two runs he allowed in his 3.1 innings came on a couple of solo homers. Paulino allowed one other hit and struck out two. Tanner Duncan struck out two over two perfect innings.

Quad Cities will begin a three-game series with Clinton at 6:35. Jairo Solís will take on Ray Kerr in the opener.

Tri-City 4, Brooklyn 3

W- Felipe Tejada (3-3)
L- Tylor Megill (0-1)
S- Juan Pablo Lopez (2)

TC home runs: Luis Encarnación (6, solo in 2nd), Alex McKenna (4, 2-run in 3rd)

The ValleyCats and Cyclones both scored in three separate innings; the difference in this game was Tri-City putting up the only crooked number on the board.

Luis Encarnación launched a leadoff homer to open the scoring in the 2nd inning and Alex McKenna smacked a two-run homer in the 3rd. César Salazar ripped a two-out double in the 7th and scored on a double from Austin Dennis. McKenna, who has homered in back-to-back games, finished 2-4 on the afternoon.

Shawn Dubin went two innings and allowed a triple to Brian Sharp, who wound up scoring on a sac fly. Felipe Tejada was the first man out of the Tri-City bullpen and allowed an unearned run on four hits, walked one, and struck out two in 3.1 innings. Juan Pablo Lopez got the last 3.2 innings and the one run he allowed came on a homer. He allowed two other hits, walked three, and struck out two.

The ValleyCats will look for the sweep at 7:00 Eastern.

GCL Astros 3, GCL Marlins 2

W- Layne Henderson (3-0)
L- Karl Craigie (0-1)
S- Jervic Chavez (3)

GCL home runs: None.

The Palm Beach Stros edged the Marlins by going ahead with a run in the top of the 9th.

Jayson Schroeder allowed two hits, walked two, and struck out one over three scoreless innings. Miguel Figueroa got the 4th and allowed two runs on two hits, walked two, and struck out two. Layne Henderson was next and he turned in four scoreless innings, allowing a hit, walking two, and striking out four. Jervic Chavez worked around a hit to close out the game, striking out one in the 9th.

Sean Mendoza drew a walk with one out in the 3rd, advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw, and scored the first run of the day on a wild pitch. Nerio Rodriguez walked to lead off the 4th, advanced on a balk, and scored on a double from Ronaldo Urdaneta. Carlos Diaz led off the 9th by drawing a walk; he stole second, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored the go-ahead run on a single from Nathan Perry. Urdaneta went 2-4 on the day.

Osiris Johnson and Davis Bradshaw both stole a base off of Nerio in the early going; Johnson stole second in the 1st and Bradshaw did the same in the 2nd inning, but Nerio got his revenge by catching them both. He got Johnson in the 3rd and Bradshaw got nailed in the 6th.
