Watson was first signed by the Astros as an amateur free agent in January of 1965 and spent the majority of the next 15 years in the Astros system. A two-time All-Star, Watson compiled a batting line of .297/.364/.444 in 1381 games spread over 14 seasons. After retiring as a player, he coached before becoming Assistant General Manager of the Astros from 1989 to 1993. In 1994 and 1995, he was the General Manager of the team.
