Drew French and Ben Rosenthal both move up from Buies Creek, where they oversaw the Carolina League champions' pitchers and hitters, respectively.

CORPUS CHRISTI HOOKS
Graham Johnson joins Omar Lopez's staff as the Hooks' pitching coach after spending 2018 with Quad Cities in the same capacity.
Tim LaMonte is new to the Astros organization. According to the Hooks' press release, LaMonte has been a private hitting instructor based in Texas for over 20 years and ran his own facility, In The Box Athletics, located in Sunnyvale, Texas, a small town near Dallas.

FAYETTEVILLE WOODPECKERS
A new coaching staff will take over the Woodpeckers, who are finally getting the chance to settle into their new home after two seasons at Campbell University in Buies Creek.
Nate Shaver takes over as the manager; he was previously a development coach for Buies Creek.
New hitting coach Jason Kanzler played for three seasons in the Twins system after they drafted him in the 20th round of the 2013 draft, advancing as far as Class A Advanced. Prior to taking this job, Kanzler spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Katy High School.
Thomas Whitsett, the Woodpeckers' pitching coach, comes from the University of Arizona, where he was the Director of Player Development-Pitchers.

QUAD CITIES RIVER BANDITS
Ray Hernandez gets his first shot at managing a team. In 2018, he served as a development coach for Fresno. He'll be joined by Rafael Peña and Erick Abreu.
Hernandez was drafted by the D-Backs in the 48th round of the 2011 draft out of Cal State Fullerton and pitched for two seasons in their system.
Abreu was originally signed by the Yankees in 2003 and pitched in the Astros system from 2008-12. He began his coaching career in the Dominican Summer League in 2013 and has moved up the organizational ladder one level at a time, spending last year as Tri-City's pitching coach.
Peña, the lone holdover from Quad Cities' 2018 staff, spent last season as the development coach.

TRI-CITY VALLEYCATS
The defending New York-Penn League champions will have an all-new staff in 2019. As a side note... all of these guys are the same age as me. Well, they're all older than me but they were all born in the same year as me.
New manager Ozney Guillén is the youngest son of former White Sox manager Ozzie Guillén. According to the ValleyCats' press release, Guillén just wrapped up his playing career, which was mainly spent in the independent leagues and Venezuela. In his first coaching job, he gets to take the reins of a team right out of the gate. He takes over for Jason Bell, who will assume a new role as Fundamentals Coordinator.
New pitching coach John Kovalik spent the last two seasons as the pitching coach at his alma mater, Slippery Rock University, a Division II school in Pennsylvania.
Sean Godfrey, the ValleyCats' new hitting coach, was drafted by the Braves in the 22nd round out of Ball State in 2014 and played in the Atlanta organization until 2016. He spent the last two seasons with the Schaumburg Flyers in the independent Frontier League.

Roster Moves
1B Nate Freiman was claimed off waivers by Oakland on Saturday, a move that wasn't totally unexpected as the Astros didn't have the luxury of keeping Freiman on the roster in addition to 1B Carlos Pena and 1B Brett Wallace (not to mention Chris Carter whose natural position is first base). It was widely reported that GM Jeff Luhnow tried to work a deal to keep Freiman and put him on a minor league contract, but the Rule 5 draft pick was instead claimed off waivers.

The Astros are also going to have to clear a couple (or more) 40-man roster spots if they intend to break camp with Rick Ankiel and Erik Bedard (or even possibly Brandon Laird) since none of those players are currently on the 40-man. So, color me surprised when the 40-man vacancy was immediately gobbled up by the imminent signing of SS Ronny Cedeno who was recently released by the Cardinals. The move does not bode well for the future of Tyler Greene who has struggled during Spring Training.
In addition, according to Baseball America, the Astros signed OF Raoul Torrez to a minor league contract. Torrez was recently released by the Diamondbacks organization.
Finally, although I haven't seen any official confirmation of this, I have been told by a source that Erick Abreu and Adalberto Flores have signed to play in Mexico and that Henry Villar is out of baseball. Abreu and Villar pitched out of the bullpen for Corpus Christi last season and Flores split his time between Corpus Christi and Oklahoma City. Again, I have no independent confirmation of this.

Astros Winter League Cumulative Stats - Pitchers
The regular seasons are over for all of the winter season leagues except for the Australian Baseball League so let's take a look at how your Astros did. Today, let's look at the pitchers. To me, there were two real standouts among them.

RHP Nick Tropeano (Arizona Fall League)
Tropeano pitched out of the bullpen to minimize his innings after having pitched 158 innings during the regular season. After putting together a very successful season at Lexington and Lancaster, he continued to impress in the AFL. His 1.00 WHIP was tied for sixth and he held some of the best prospects in the minor leagues to a .189 batting average.
RHP Carlos Quevedo (Liga Paralela & Venezuelan Winter League)
Quevedo was credited with helping the championship Liga Paralela Magallanes team make it to the playoffs. His dominance in the Liga Paralela led to a call-up to play for the main Magallanes team where he made one successful appearance before the regular season ended. Quevedo's 1.38 ERA led the Liga Paralela for pitchers pitching a minimum of 30 innings and he continued to put together a very healthy strikeout to walk ratio.
Others of Note
I was happy to see RHP Chia-Jen Lo continue his comeback from surgery with a successful AFL season. Several 2012 Astros who are currently free agents had good seasons as well, particularly RHP Sergio Perez who led the Venezuelan Winter League in wins and was tied for second in WHIP and strikeouts. Free agents Erick Abreu, Adalberto Flores and Enerio del Rosario also had strong campaigns.
And finally, after having mixed results out of the bullpen for Carolina in the Puerto Rican Winter League, 21-year old RHP Raul Rivera finished off his season with an excellent seven-inning start for Carolina. After missing all of 2011, Rivera put up some strong numbers for the GCL in 2012. It may not sound like much, but the combination of those two factors intrigues me enough that I will be paying closer attention to Rivera in 2013.
Here are the full regular season stats for all Astros pitchers participating in winter league play. Cameron Lamb is the only player whose team hasn't finished the regular season.

Monday's Games
DSL Indians over DSL Astros 15-1
Five Astros pitchers combined in this mess with Rayderson Chevalier getting charged with the loss and Geronimo Franzua being the only Astros pitcher to emerge unscathed. The Astros were held to four hits with Hector Roa getting two of them. Luis Reynoso had the only extra base hit, a double.
GCL Astros over GCL Cardinals 4-3
Kyle Hallock got his third rehab start, stretching it out to two innings this go around and allowing one run on two hits. Raul Rivera gave up another two runs in his four innings of work before the relief crew in the guise of Gera Sanchez and Erick Gonzalez (S, 10) came in to pitch a very effective final three innings. Edwin Gomez was two-for-three with a double and a solo home run. Juan Santana was two-for-five with a double and an RBI. Darwin Rivera also doubled.
Greeneville over Elizabethton 6-5
Starter Frederick Tiburcio allowed four runs on seven hits over four innings and struck out six. He was followed by Christian Garcia who was charged with one run and was awarded the win thanks to solid relief from Mike Hauschild and Jordan Jankowski (S,3). This game was always close as the two teams traded runs, and a wild pitch allowing Ariel Ovando to score what proved to be the wining run turned out to be the difference maker at the end of the night. And it was the Ariel Ovando show as he hit two home runs, walked twice, drove in three and scored three. Terrell Joyce also had a very nice night at the plate, going two-for-four with two doubles.
Staten Island over Tri-City 8-7 in 11 innings
Six pitchers combined for Tri-City in this one. Brady Rodgers got the start, giving up three runs on five hits in five innings. Jamaine Cotton got the first blown save of the night as he allowed three runs in his one inning of work before giving way to Travis Ballew and Scott Zuloaga for scoreless relief. Blake Ford then got the second blown save of the game as he gave up one run in the eighth and John Neely was charged with the loss, allowing one run in two and two-thirds innings. Preston Tucker was the offensive star of this one as he went three-for-five with a double, a home run, three RBI and three runs scored. Dan Gulbransen was three-for-six with two RBI; and Austin "Catfish" Elkins, Joe Sclafani and Ryan Dineen each had two hits.
Greensboro over Lexington 5-1
Starter Chris Devenski gave up two runs on seven hits in five and a third innings which proved to be one run too many as Lexington was held to one hit and one run for the night. Evan Grills added on another three runs before giving way to Gabriel Garcia who allowed no hits and one walk in his relief outing. Brandon Meredith got the only Lexington hit in the second inning, but the Legends wouldn't score until the ninth when they scored one on a double play thanks to a hit batter, walk and fielding error.
Lancaster over Rancho Cucamonga 14-11
The score sounds much closer than the game actually was as Lancaster took a commanding lead early driving three Rancho Cucamonga pitchers out of the game and scoring all 14 runs by the time the fourth inning was over. Tyson Perez got his ninth win, despite allowing five runs on eight hits over seven innings, as he was gifted with 14 runs in support of his start. Then things got a little dicey as Brad Dydalewicz gave up a three-run home run in the eighth, Zach Grimmett loaded up the bases in the ninth and was followed by Jose Trinidad who gave up a three-run double. Kenny Long then followed to get a quick double play to end things. The pitching might have been a bit questionable at times last night but the offense was anything but. Delino DeShields broke the Astros minor league single season stolen base record with two steals in the second inning; Telvin Nash hit his 26th home run; and Jio Mier hit his third home run. Everyone in the line-up got at least one hit but a few were overachievers.

Asher Wojciechowski allowed one run on five hits over six and two-thirds innings and Kevin Chapman, Jake Buchanan, Erick Abreu (W, 9-4) and Jason Stoffel (S, 24) combined to allow only one additional hit over the next six and two-thirds innings. The Hooks were held to five hits with two of them being a home run from Jonathan Singleton and Jay Fernandez's solo homer in the thirteenth inning.
Round Rock over Oklahoma City 2-1
Brett Oberholtzer allowed two runs on ten hits with seven strikeouts over seven and two-thirds innings and was pegged with the tough luck loss as his team couldn't provide him with run support. Mike Hessman did his part as he went two-for-four with two doubles. Jimmy Paredes was also two-for-four with one double.
Players of the Day: I've got to give this one to Delino DeShields for breaking the stolen base record, but I also have to acknowlege Ariel Ovando's two home run, three RBI night.
Pitchers of the Day: I'm going with the whole Corpus Christi crew for a tightly pitched match.

Happy Birthday - 8/9
RHP Erick Abreu (29)
Houston signed Abreu as a minor league free agent in 2008. In 31 games (three starts) for Corpus Christi this season, Abreu is 8-4 with a 4.77 ERA and a 1.333 WHIP. In July he had a 2.31 ERA and a 1.028 WHIP in five games (one start), but has struggled to stay off the DL as of late.
Hitting Coach Luis Mateo (31)
Mateo is in his fourth season as hitting coach for the Dominican Summer League Astros. Prior to coaching for the Astros, Mateo spent several years in the Tampa Bay minor league system.
There are several former Astros with birthdays today ~
OF Roman Mejias (82)
Mejias was drafted from Pittsburgh in the 1961 expansion draft and spent the 1962 season with the Colt .45's. In 146 games, he hit .286/.326/.445 with 12 doubles, three triplies and 24 home runs.
CF Tommy Agee (died January 22, 2001 at age 58)
Agee came to Houston in a November 1972 trade with the Mets and played in 83 games for the Astros before being traded to the Cardinals the following August. A two-time All-Star and Rookie of the Year and Gold Glove winner in 1966 while with the White Sox, Agee was a shadow of his former self six years later when he hit .235/.294/.397 for Houston.
LHP Claude Osteen (73)
Osteen came to Houston as a part of the December 1973 trade that sent Jimmy Wynn to the Dodgers. In 23 games for Houston (21 starts), Osteen was 9-9 with a 3.71 ERA and a 1.482 WHIP. He was a three-time All-Star with Los Angeles and was a part of the 1965 Dodgers World Series championship team.
RHP Bob Scanlan (46)
Originally drafted by the Phillies in the 25th round in 1984, Scanlan signed with Houston as a free agent prior to the 1998 season. In 27 games out of the bullpen, he had a 3.08 ERA and a 1.405 WHIP.
3B Mike Lamb (37)
A seventh round draft pick by the Rangers in 1997, Lamb came to Houston in a March 2004 trade with the Yankees. In 487 games over four seasons (from 2004 through 2007) for the Astros, Lamb hit .281/.342/.464.

WEDNESDAY'S RESULTS
Corpus Christi over San Antonio 11-9
I left for lunch and the Hooks had a three run lead (4-1) going in to the fourth, Oberholtzer was pretty much cruising and it looked like a good day. While I'm waiting for my food, I check again and it's a 9-2 lead after five. Even better! They've got this one in the bag. Not so fast there, Sparky. By the time I got back to the office, the score was 9-9 going into the seventh. What the what?!?!? San Antonio scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie it. Oberholtzer had given up one run, and with one out and the bases loaded, Josh Zeid came in. And it wasn't pretty. Single with a run scoring, fly out, walk to reload the bases, grand slam. Zeid exits stage right. Kevin Chapman comes in and promptly walks the first two batters before mercifully getting the final out of the inning. Wow.
But the fun wasn't over. The game was still tied and with two out in the top of the ninth, pitcher Erick Abreu drew a walk in only his second plate appearance of the season, went first to third on a single and scored what turned out to be the winning run on another single. I doubt he would even have come to bat, but since Abreu is the go to guy for long relief and it was tied in the ninth, I can see why he did. The Hooks scored another run, Erick Abreu's day was done after one inning and Jason Stoffel got Abreu the win while recording his fourth save. I guess the moral of the story is that a win is a win even if it's an ugly win.
I would be remiss if I didn't point out the 17 hits that the Hooks got (after getting only five hits in yesterday's second game). Austin Wates (2x4, 3B), Jonathan Villar (2x5, 2RBI), Jose Martinez (4x5, 2B), Jake Goebbert (solo HR), Ryan McCurdy (3x5, 3RBI), and Brett Oberholtzer (2x3, RBI) all had good days. And Josh Zeid owes Erick Abreu, Andy Simunic, Ryan McCurdy and Brandon Barnes dinner for bailing him out of that mess!
Lancaster over Rancho Cucamonga 6-4
Bobby Doran earned his fourth win, giving up three runs over six innings pitched; Jose Trinidad pitched two scoreless frames; and Kirk Clark gave up one run, but ultimately struck out the side to earn his fourth save. Adam Bailey (2x4, two doubles), Rafy Valenzuela (2x5, RBI, SB), Alex Todd (2x4, two doubles, RBI) and Rene Garcia (1x4, 2B, 2RBI) were the stars of the night. George Springer was held out of the lineup again as he recovers from being hit in the hand by a pitch a few days ago. The win brings Lancaster back to .500.

What went right: Delino DeShields Jr., Zach Johnson and Matt Duffy had monster nights.
Jonas Dufek wasn't dominating in this start, but he didn't need to be as his offense kicked it in to overdrive with seventeen hits and five stolen bases. Unfortunately, there is one correction that has to be made from what was reported last night regarding Delino DeShields, Jr. He only had four stolen bases, not five. From MiLB's story:

I'm giving it to the entire Legends lineup. There were several overachievers on Wednesday, but every starter got at least one hit.

He was originally credited with a steal of home as part of a double steal in the first inning, which would have given him a Legends' record of five in one game, but since Jordan Scott was thrown out going from first to second before DeShields scored, DeShields was not credited with stealing home.Four stolen bases or five, DeShields scored three times and is wreaking havoc on the basepaths. Zach Johnson reclaimed the South Atlantic League lead in RBIs with a four RBI night, including a three run home run. And Matt Duffy went 4x6 with a double, home run and two RBI. The bullpen gave up a couple of runs, but with the lead they were handed, they were free to pitch pretty aggressively. The win brings Lexington to .500 on the season.
