Jarred Cosart, Kiké Hernandez, and Austin Wates traded to Marlins
Today, we saw a big trade go down. Jarred Cosart, the hometown kid, Enrique "Kiké" Hernandez, who quickly established himself as a fan favorite here even though he's only played a month in the Majors, and Austin Wates, the Astros' 3rd-round pick from 2010, were all traded to the Miami Marlins.
Coming to the Houston Astros are Colin Moran, Jake Marisnick, and Francis Martes. The Astros also recieved a competitive balance lottery pick in the deal. Here is a brief intro to all 3 players.
Moran, a 21-year-old 3B, is the nephew of longtime MLBer B.J. Surhoff and was the 6th overall pick in 2013 from North Carolina. He entered the 2014 season as the #2 prospect in the Marlins organization, according to Baseball America. He has spent the entire season with Jupiter in the Florida State League. He will be reporting to Corpus Christi.
Marisnick, 23, is an outfielder who was originally drafted by the Blue Jays in the 3rd round from high school in Riverside, California. He is reporting to the Astros. Marisnick was BA's #3 prospect entering the year. He made his Major League debut last July 23.
Martes, an 18-year-old RHP, has been with the Marlins' Gulf Coast League team. This is his first season in the United States.

Well, it was great to see Jarred Cosart bring it for his hometown team. You could tell that he was proud to wear the H every time he took the mound. His results were a bit uneven, but he wanted to improve himself each and every day. Would it have been nice to see him stick around? You bet. I'll still wear his jersey. I won't speculate on what precipitated his departure here.
Kiké's a ballplayer. As a player who was largely overlooked by the rankings, he rose up and fought his way to the Majors even if the scouts and the pundits had already capped him as a utility player. I won't be surprised if he plays in the Majors for 10 years doing everything on the field and injecting some energy into a lineup.
Austin Wates, I believe, was simply a victim of the numbers game. He posted solid lines year in and year out, but he was never viewed as a hot prospect. I also think that he would have played in Houston had it not been for injuries that have kept him off the field, most notably the wrist problem that kept him on the shelf for most of last season.
Happy trails, Jarred, Enrique, and Austin. All the best as you continue to live your dream (or in Austin's case chase your dream) of being Major League Baseball players. No matter where your careers take you, I hope you hold Houston, Texas dear in your hearts and always remember that the Astros gave you your first Major League opportunities.

Astros Minor League Recaps
Results for Monday, April 7, 2014
And for the 2nd straight night, all Astros affiliates that were in action came out victorious.
Oklahoma City 6, New Orleans 4
W- Rudy Owens (1-0)
L- Jesus Sanchez (0-1)

OKC home runs: Austin Wates (1, solo in 7th)
The Zephyrs jumped all over Mike Foltynewicz for 4 1st-inning runs, but the RedHawks got the last laugh as they scored 6 unanswered to take the opener.
Folty labored through 2.1 innings, and all 4 runs he allowed came in the 1st. He gave up 4 hits (2 homers back-to-back), walked 2, and struck out 2. But, the guys after him picked him up and bought time for the OKC offense to get themselves going. Darin Downs allowed a hit over 1.2 scoreless, and then Rudy Owens came on and threw 4 scoreless, allowing 2 hits and striking out 3. Jason Stoffel came on to close it out and struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 9th.
OKC got on the board in the 4th with a Jon Singleton double. In the 6th, George Springer added an RBI double of his own, then came home on Singleton's 2nd 2-bagger of the evening. Austin Wates finished a triple shy of the cycle in 4 at-bats; he tied the game at 4 with a solo homer (1) in the 7th, then Max Stassi broke the tie with a 2-run double. Wates also scored 3 times and stole 3 bases (2nd twice, 3rd once). In his season debut, Erik Castro was 1-3 with a walk and 2 strikeouts as the DH.
In game 2 of this series, Paul Clemens and Jake Buchanan will take on TBA; OKC's game notes lists Brian Flynn as the starter for New Orleans. First pitch is at 7:00.

After briefly losing the lead, the Hooks finished the game on a 5-1 run. They got outhit 16-9, but won the column that counts towards the W-L record.
Everyone in the lineup had 1 RBI except for Preston Tucker. He went 1-5 with a run scored. Corpus opened up the scoring with 3 runs in the 2nd on a Kiké Hernandez single, a René Garcia groundout, and a Jio Mier double. Hernandez and Mier both had 2 hits. The Hooks fell behind 4-3 after the 4th, but again, that didn't last long. They answered with a pair in the 5th on a Joe Sclafani fielder's choice scoring Garcia and an Andrew Aplin groundout scoring Mier. Delino DeShields went deep for the first time this season with a 1-out solo shot in the 7th. M.P. Cokinos hit an RBI single in the 8th, and Matt Duffy joined Kiké and Jio in the 2-hit club with an RBI single of his own in the 9th inning.
Colton Cain went 3.2 innings and allowed 4 runs on 10 hits (2-run homer), walked 1, and struck out 3. Andrew Robinson came on with 2 outs in the 4th and struck out the Cuban defector, Aledmys Diaz, to end the inning. He then proceeded to strike out 2 in a 1-2-3 5th to get the victory. Brady Rodgers tagged in for the final 4 innings, and the only run he allowed was a solo homer to James Ramsey in the 9th. Rodgers gave up 5 other hits and struck out 3.
The Hooks will look for the sweep in a morning contest. Let's see what Aaron West and David Rollins have in store for an encore after impressing in their first appearances of the season. They'll be taking on Kurt Heyer at 11:10 A.M. A radio note: If you're planning to listen on the Internet via iHeartRadio, this game will be on 1400 (KUNO) instead of the usual station, 1360 (KKTX).

In a random low-scoring game at The Hangar, the JetHawks walked off with the win in the series opener thanks to a 2-run double from Rio Ruiz with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th.
Both teams only had 3 hits; Teoscar Hernandez had 2 of Lancaster's 3... and you know who had the other one. After Jordan Scott and Tony Kemp were the first 2 casualties of the 9th, Hernandez walked, and Carlos Correa followed suit. And Rio did the rest. Correa was 0-2, but he walked twice and scored the winner.
Lancaster's pitchers have absolutely taken flight out of the gate. This game was no different. Kyle Westwood went 5 innings and allowed an unearned run on 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 7. Vince Velasquez came on and all he did was toss 4 perfect innings, striking out 5 in the process.
In the middle game of this series, Kyle Smith and Lance McCullers will face Chris Stratton at 6:30 Pacific.
Quad Cities was off
They spent the day traveling to Lansing to prepare for 3 against the Lugnuts. Chris Lee and Andrew Thurman will take on Tom Robson in the series opener at 7:05 Eastern/6:05 Central.

Originally signed by the Reds as a NDFA out of Venezuela, Torreyes came to the Astros system in a trade that sent two international bonus signing slots to the Cubs back in July. In 37 games with Corpus Christi, he is hitting .270/.299/.338 (.462/.475/.667 over his last 10 games).

Drafted out of Virginia Tech by the Astros in the third round in 2010, Wates started off the season just as he left off the last one, spending only 23 games at Corpus Christi before getting promoted to AAA Oklahoma City in May. Unfortunately, Wates was hit by a pitch that fractured his forearm in late May and has missed the remainder of the season. In his 38 combined games between the two levels, he hit .309/.397/.412 with five doubles, three triples, one home run and 15 stolen bases.
SS Luis Reynoso (19)
Reynoso was signed as a non-drafted free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 2011 and first played for the DSL in 2012. He spent this season with the GCL, earning a promotion to Greeneville in time for the last game of the regular season. During the regular season, he hit .233/.322/.313 in 44 games.

Thursday's Games
Oklahoma City at Nashville - Postponed
Corpus Christi over Springfield 5-0
David Martinez (5IP 2H 2BB 2SO) and Asher Wojciechowski (4IP 1H 3BB 4SO) combined to pitch a dandy, shutting out Springfield and allowing only three hits between them. LF Austin Wates' solo homer in the first was all the offense Corpus Christi needed, but the Hooks played add on in the fifth via a Wates RBI triple and a SS Jio Mier RBI double. RF Domingo Santana's solo shot in the sixth, along with Mier's bases loaded walk, added to the Hooks' cushion. The JetHawks allowed one unearned run across in the first before David Rollins (5IP 4H 1BB 4SO) and Tyson Perez (4IP 0H 0BB 4SO) slammed the door shut on the Nuts (figuratively, not literally). 1B Rafy Valenzuela got the scoring started with an RBI double in the second. 3B Matt Duffy had an RBI single to go with two more hit-by-pitches. LF Preston Tucker (2-for-4 2B BB R), RF Drew Muren (2-for-4 RBI 2R) and C M.P. Cokinos (2-for-4 RBI) all had multi-hit games while Nolan Fontana was 1-for-5 with a double and two strikeouts. The JetHawks committed three errors in the game. Like Corpus, Lancaster has now won five in a row.

Player of the Day: Austin Wates! Come on down. Wates had a tremedous outing, missing only a double toward hitting for the cycle. Wates is currently hitting .360/.500/.600 in the first seven games of the season.
Pitcher of the Day: All four of Thursday's pitchers are worthy, but the four perfect innings from Tyson Perez give him the edge.

Corpus Christi over Springfield 5-0
David Martinez (5IP 2H 2BB 2SO) and Asher Wojciechowski (4IP 1H 3BB 4SO) combined to pitch a dandy, shutting out Springfield and allowing only three hits between them. LF Austin Wates' solo homer in the first was all the offense Corpus Christi needed, but the Hooks played add on in the fifth via a Wates RBI triple and a SS Jio Mier RBI double. RF Domingo Santana's solo shot in the sixth, along with Mier's bases loaded walk, added to the Hooks' cushion. Friday's Games
Quad Cities over Kane County 4-1
Lance McCullers got off to a great start in his first appearance of the season, allowing four hits and striking out five in his five scoreless innings of work. McCullers' tandem partner Daniel Minor gave up one run on five hits in two and a third innings. Interestingly enough, Kyle Hallock worked one inning out of the bullpen. I had assumed he would be one of the starters. Hallock and John Neely both provided scoreless relief with Hallock striking out two. 3B Rio Ruiz, OF Ariel Ovando and C Roberto Pena all went 2-for-4 with a double with Ruiz' double being of the two RBI variety.
Springfield over Corpus Christi 2-0
Nick Tropeano got the hard luck loss despite allowing only one run via a solo homer in his five innings of work as Corpus Christi managed to collect only one hit off the Springfield team. Tropeano ended his night with three hits and a walk with five strikeouts in five innings and was followed by his tandem partner Bobby Doran who allowed one run on three hits and two strikeouts in three innings. Andrew Robinson rounded things out with two strikeouts in his scoreless outing. LF Austin Wates collected that one hit, a single in the first at bat of the game, to go with two walks later in the match, as well as a stolen base. Wates and RF Domingo Santana also recorded outfield assists in the game.
High Desert over Lancaster 7-3
Starter Brady Rodgers was the latest initiate into the brotherhood of Lancaster pitchers, a fraternity of hardship that bonds these men for life. A little overly dramatic? Yeah, well, maybe so. Rodgers definitely held his own in the first three innings before allowing four of his six hits consecutively to start the fourth, including a two-run home run. T.J. Geith finished out the fourth, pitched another frame and allowed another two runs before handing it over to Chris Devenski, the second half of the tandem team. Devenski pitched a strong three innings, allowing one run on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Jonas Dufek rounded things off with a scoreless frame. RF Preston Tucker provided some fireworks with a two-run shot in his 2-for-4 outing; LF Brandon Meredith was 2-for-3 and stole a base; and 1B Rafy Valenzuela had the only other extra base hit of the night, a double.
Memphis over Oklahoma City 9-0 in 7 innings (Game 1)
Jordan Lyles got the loss in his first start of the season as he allowed four runs on three hits and three walks with two strikeouts over four and a third innings. He was not helped by reliever Kevin Chapman who allowed two of Lyles' runners to score. Chapman gave up a hit and a walk without recording an out before giving way to C.J. Fick. Fick then allowed Lyles' remaining runner to score, along with one of Chapman's runners before giving up three runs of his own. Before all was said and done, 12 runners came to the plate with eight of them scoring, two on bases loaded walks. Gives new meaning to the phrase "pay it forward." Josh Zeid was the only pitcher with an effective outing as he struck out the side in the sixth, working around a walk and a Jimmy Paredes error that should have been the third out. The bats weren't exactly on fire either as the RedHawks only collected five hits, including a double from RF Jimmy Paredes. 3B Brandon Laird was 2-for-3 and didn't strike out three times like a certain big league first baseman who also screwed up by cutting off a throw to home last night and is hitting .071 for the season with 11 strikeouts. Wait. Where was I? Let's suffice to to say that Wallace had better watch his back or Laird is going to take his job from him. But no pressure there, Brett.
Oklahoma City over Memphis 8-7 in 7 innings (Game 2)
Paul Clemens gave up three runs on seven hits and three strikeouts to earn the win, but not before Wes Musick and Jose Valdez made it interesting allowing four runs to score in the bottom of the seventh to come within a run. 3B Jimmy Paredes was 2-for-3 with a double as was C Cody Clark. CF Robbie Grossman was 1-for-3 with two RBI; LF Trevor Crowe was also credited with two RBI despite not recording a hit. Grossman and Paredes each stole a base. And 1B Brandon Laird was 1-for-4 with a two-run home run and two RBI sac flies. Just sayin', Brett, just sayin'.
Pitcher of the Day: Lance McCullers wins this one hands down with an excellent start. Because of the tandem pitching assignments, he will likely have to wait through his next outing before getting another chance to get that first professional win, but I have no doubt he will be getting it soon.
Players of the Day: It's a tie. I've got to send Austin Wates some love because his lead-off first inning hit kept Corpus from being on the wrong end of a no-no. The two walks, outfield assist and stolen base were just gravy. And Brandon Laird's four RBI night makes him look awfully good in light of what some of us witnessed in person at Minute Maid Park last night, small sample size or not.
