RHP Gerardo Juarez (22)
Signed by the Astros out of Nicaragua prior to the 2013 season, Juarez spent the majority of his 2014 season on the disabled list following just one outing in June. After coming back in August, Juarez had a 0.00 ERA and a 0.500 WHIP with one save in four innings.
RHP Kyle Smith (22)
Obtained in the July 2013 Justin Maxwell trade with Kansas City, Smith was originally drafted by that team in the fourth round in 2011. Smith spent the first month of the season with Lancaster, compiling a 4-0 record with a 2.60 ERA and a 1.084 WHIP in seven games (three starts) before his promotion to AA Corpus Christi in early May. In 21 games (13 starts) for the Hooks, Smith was 5.5 with a 4.34 ERA and a 1.227 WHIP. In a total of 123 innings pitched, Smith walked 37 batters and struck out 127.
LHP Luis Cruz (24)
Drafted in the 9th round in 2008 out of high school in Puerto Rico, Cruz split the 2013 season between Corpus Christi and Oklahoma City. Between the two venues, he was 8-8 with a 3.68 ERA and a 1.243 WHIP. In 124.2 innings, he walked 38 batters while striking out 118.

LHP Randy "Big Unit" Johnson (51)
Randy is well-remembered by Houston fans for his dominance during the 1998 playoff run. Obtained at the trade deadline, he went 10-1 in 11 starts with a 1.28 ERA and a 0.984 WHIP. He helped to get the Astros to the post season, but even with an impressive 1.93 ERA and a 1.000 WHIP, he went 0-2 and Houston lost the NLDS to San Diego 3-1. Johnson appeared in 22 major league seasons for six teams, with the vast majority of his time spent in the Mariners and Diamondbacks organizations. Among many other accomplishments, Johnson was a 10-time All-Star, MVP for the 2001 World Series and a five-time Cy Young Award Winner.
1B Craig Cacek (60)
Originally drafted by the Mets in the ninth round in 1972, Cacek came to Houston in a December 1975 trade with the Mets. His sole major league experience consisted of seven games played for Houston during the 1977 season. He did manage to get his one hit in the bigs, but that's about it.
RHP Lance Pendleton (31)
A first round pick by the Yankees in 2005, Pendleton was picked up in the Rule 5 draft from the Yankees in 2010, returned prior to the 2011 season and ultimately claimed off waivers from the Yankees in September 2011. In four appearances he had a 17.36 ERA and a 2.357 WHIP.

Wednesday's Games
Here is the latest update on the playoff picture.
Nashville over Oklahoma City 6-1
Asher Wojciechowski (4.2IP 6H 3R 2BB 4SO) got the start and the loss. Three more runs scored against Hector Ambriz and Wade LeBlanc in their outings while Rhiner Cruz pitched a scoreless ninth. The only RedHawks run scored in the fourth as Brandon Laird came home on a wild pitch. Of the six hits collected by Oklahoma City, a Jose Martinez double was the only extra-base hit. George Springer had a well-deserved night off. He is still at 37/43 in his quest to join the 40/40 club.
Frisco over Corpus Christi 10-6
Kyle Hallock allowed two runs via the long ball in the first and another three run homer in the second without recording an out and his night was done. Carlos Quevedo tossed five hitless innings, walking three and striking out four. Matt Heidenreich came into the game in the seventh and allowed five runs, including a walk-off grand slam in the ninth. Ouch. The Hooks scored three in the first on back-to-back home runs from Kike Hernandez (1x4 2RBI) and Erik Castro (2x4 2R); and Ronald Torreyes singled in one in the second. The final two runs came in the third on a Domingo Santana two-run home run in his first game since coming off the DL. Matt Duffy and Drew Muren both doubled in the game. Mike Foltynewicz was originally scheduled to start last night. It was later announced that he would pitch one inning. I haven't seen any information as to why he was scratched completely.
Lancaster over Lake Elsinore 4-3
Lancaster cruised to their 80th win of the season, something that hasn't been achieved by a JetHawks team since 2007. I can't help but notice that during the current homestand (in which the 'Hawks have won 5 of 6), the pitching has been quite good. They are averaging 2.5 runs allowed over those six games, a very nice accomplishment at the extremely hitter-friendly Hangar.
Mike Hauschild got the start and allowed two runs on nine hits over six innings. He got 11 groundouts to one flyout. He was followed by two scoreless innings from Michael Dimock (who has only allowed one run in his last seven appearances). Kenny Long allowed one unearned run (Sclafani throwing error) in the ninth. Long has only allowed one earned run in his last seven appearances as well. Travis Ballew (two runs allowed in his last seven) got the final two outs to earn his 21st save of the season. Carlos Perdomo (2x4 2R) and M.P. Cokinos (3x3 2B BB 2RBI) each singled in a run in the first, and Joe Sclafani drove in one in the fourth. A Cokinos RBI double in the eighth accounted for the final 'Hawks run. Jesse Wierzbicki also doubled in the game. Delino DeShields swiped his 48th and 49th bags of the season.
Quad Cities over Wisconsin 4-2
Chris Devenski (6IP 4H 1R 1BB 2SO) put up a solid start and came away with the win. Richard Rodriguez allowed the second Wisconsin run to score in the seventh, but Mitch Lambson and Andrew Walter were perfect in the final two frames. Quad Cities got started late, but got on the board with a three-spot in the sixth as Danry Vasquez tripled in two runs and was brought home on a Rio Ruiz single. Tony Kemp scored from second on a force attempt and throwing error in the eighth for the final Bandits run. Jordan Scott went two-for-four in the game.

It was a pitchers' duel in Brooklyn as the two teams combined to allow only five hits and one walk on the night. Unfortunately, the 'Cats were on the wrong side of the duel and a Chan Moon single in the sixth and a Ronnie Mitchell walk in the ninth was all the action that Tri-City saw. Kyle Westwood pitched a brilliant six innings himself, allowing only one unearned run on four hits with one strikeout and was followed by two no-hit innings from Troy Scribner. Scribner struck out three.
Danville over Greeneville 5-2
Enderson Franco (5IP 4H 3R/2ER 2BB SO HR) took the loss and was followed by Ryan Connolly who allowed another two runs (one earned) to score in his two innings. Gerardo Ramirez and Chris Munnelly each pitched a scoreless frame. Tanner Mathis (3x4) doubled and later scored in the first for one run, but the Astros didn't see the run column again until the eighth when Thomas Lindauer reached on a error, advanced to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a Mathis single and scored on a Brett Phillips sac fly.
GCL Astros over GCL Yankees2 5-0
Gerardo Juarez (3IP 1H 3BB 6SO) in only his second appearance for the GCL Astros after his promotion from the Dominican Summer League combined with Erick Gonzalez (4IP 1H 4SO) and Brandon Culbreth (1H 1BB 3SO) to shutout the Yankees squad on three hits. It was Culbreth's first appearance since July 18th. The Astros were held to one hit through the first five, but a Luis Reynoso (2x4 2R) triple followed by a Yonathan Mejia (2x3 2B BB R) single got them on the board in the sixth. They put up another four runs in the eighth on five hits, including a two-RBI single from Jacob Nottingham.
Player of the Day: M.P. Cokinos had what was for him a bit of a slump in July in which he hit .264/.328/.446. He has heated up considerably in August and has hit .429/.442/.524 in his last 10 games. That's just what I want to see ... Cokinos coming in to the playoffs next week with a hot bat.
Pitcher of the Day: The GCL crew of Gerardo Juarez, Erick Gonzalez and Brandon Culbreth deserve the honors for their three-hit shutout, which also brought a three-game losing streak to an end. Honorable mention goes to Carlos Quevedo for a terrific long relief outing for the Hooks.

Wednesday's Games
Tuscon over Oklahoma City 8-6
Bobby Doran put up a solid start (6IP 3H 2R 2BB 4SO), but Jason Stoffel was victimized in the seventh to the tune of three runs on three hits. Pat Urckfitz faced two batters in the eighth and struck both of them out. Hector Ambriz, tasked with getting the final out with a 6-5 lead in the frame, instead allowed a three-run home run to Cody Decker. Sigh. Trevor Crowe doubled in two of the four Oklahoma City runs in the second inning, and Ruben Sosa (3x4 2B 2RBI 2R) singled in one run in the second and doubled in another in the fourth. Every RedHawks starter reached the hit column with George Springer, Brandon Laird, Jimmy Paredes and Rene Garcia having multi-hit games in addition to Sosa.
Northwest Arkansas over Corpus Christi 1-0
Nick Tropeano pitched a great game and came out of it with a complete game loss. He gave up six hits and two walks, struck out six and allowed the only run of the game on a solo home run. On the other side of the diamond, Northwest Arkansas used five pitchers and allowed only two Hooks hits, two Kike Hernandez singles. Sorry, Nick, sometimes life just isn't fair.
Lancaster over Inland Empire 6-5
Aaron West got the start and allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits over the first four and was followed by two and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief from Blair Walters. A two-run homer issued by Jordan Jankowski in the eighth inning earned him a blown save, but the 'Hawks came back and Travis Ballew was awarded a "W" in the ninth. The JetHawks did not reach the run column until the sixth inning when two of the four runs came across on a Nolan Fontana home run. They put up one more in the eighth and Joe Sclafani hit a walk-off single in the ninth scoring Brandon Meredith. Sclafani was four-for-five for the night with a triple, RBI, stolen base and two runs scored. Carlos Perdomo and Tyler Heineman each had multi-hit games as well.
Clinton over Quad Cities 9-7
Josh Hader's second start did not go quite as well as his first. After allowing back-to-back doubles to start the game, Hader issued four free passes, hit a batter and was charged with a wild pitch while only recording two outs. Daniel Minor came in to get a quick ground out to end the threat, but ultimately allowed two runs over his three and a third innings. Patrick Christensen allowed one unearned run in his two innings and Zach Morton was pegged with the loss as he gave up the final two runs in his two. Rio Ruiz (2x4 2B HR BB) got the first River Bandit run in the second on a solo homer. Four more scored in the third with help from a Terrell Joyce RBI double and three Clinton errors in the frame. Carlos Correa (3x4 BB 2RBI R) singled in the final two Bandits runs in the fourth. Tony Kemp went two-for-three with two walks and scored a run; and Bobby Borchering was two-for-four with a double and run scored.
Connecticut over Tri-City 4-2
Kyle Westwood pitched the first three and allowed one run on a hit and a walk while striking out four. Tanner Bushue followed and gave up three runs (two earned) in his two innings before giving way to scoreless outings from Tyler Brunnemann and J.D. Osborne. Mike Martinez (2x3 BB R) scored on a ground out in the second, and Tyler White singled in James Ramsay (1x4 R SB) in the third. Tri-City was limited to eight hits in the game, all singles.
Johnson City over Greeneville 9-4
Starter Enderson Franco had a no-hitter going through four innings, but ultimately allowed seven runs on seven hits and struck out six over six innings. Krishawn Holley allowed the next two runs in his inning before Gonzalo Sanudo came in to pitch a perfect ninth. Alfredo Gonzalez (2x3 HR BB 2RBI 2R) got his second home run in the last week and second of his career to start the scoring in the third. Marc Wik scored on a wild pitch in the sixth. And the final two runs scored on RBI singles from Gonzales and Tanner Mathis (2x4 BB RBI) in the ninth. Brian Holberton was two-for-four with a double. Angel Ibanez and Ariel Ovando doubled in the game as well.
GCL Yankees2 over GCL Astros 4-0
Francis Ramirez (5IP 3H 1BB 3SO) and Zach Dando (3IP 4H 2SO) pitched eight shutout innings before the wheels came off for Juan Santos inn the bottom of the ninth. Single, walk, intentional walk, grand slam, ouch. The Yankees2 team was dealing too. Jean Batista's single to lead off the second was the only Astros hit in the game.
DSL Astros over DSL Dodgers 12-0
This was a nice team effort from pitchers Gerardo Juarez (3IP 3H 1BB 5SO), Juan Hernandez (3IP 2H 1BB 2SO), Yhoan Acosta (2IP 1H 2SO) and Geronimo Franzua (1IP 1BB 1SO) as they combined in the shutout. Randy Cesar (3x4 2B HR BB RBI 3R) started the Astros offensive onslaught with a solo homer in the second and Jarico Reynoso (2x5 3RBI) ended the scoring with a two-RBI triple in the ninth. Jesus Bermejo went two-for-five with two RBI and two runs scored. Luis Payano, Brauly Mejia and Jean Carlos Cortrorreal each had multi-hit games as well.
Players of the Day: Joe Sclafani's four-for-five night was impressive enough, but now that Sclafani finally has enough at-bats to qualify as a league leader, you can see that his season as a whole has been pretty impressive. He ranks third in average in the California League, second in OBP and 11th in slugging. Randy Cesar, who lacked a triple to hit for the cycle, and scored thrice for the DSL shares the honors.
Pitchers of the Day: I've got to send some love to the Dominican Republic as the four pitchers combined in a six-hit shutout. A tip of the cap to righties Gerardo Juarez and Juan Hernandez, and lefties Yhoan Acosta and Geronimo Franzua on a great game.

Tuesday's Games
Round Rock over Oklahoma City 11-8
Starter Wade LeBlanc allowed nine runs on 11 hits (two home runs) and struck out six in three and a third innings and Jose Valdez added on another two runs without recording an out. Eric Berger, Rhiner Cruz, Philip Humber and Hector Ambriz stopped the bleeding, but the damage was already done. The RedHawks did bang out 17 hits, but were 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position. Marwin Gonzalez was three-for-five with a double and scored two runs; Brandon Laird was three-for-five and scored three runs; and George Springer went four-for-five with a triple, two home runs and five RBI.

Lancaster over High Desert 7-5
David Rollins got the start, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out eight (including striking out the side in his sixth and final inning of work). Jonas Dufek then worked two-thirds of an inning, and allowed three unearned runs on a two-out bases clearing double that immediate followed a throwing error from Nolan Fontana. Michael Dimock earned the win and Travis Ballew earned his 15th save with scoreless outings. The 'Hawks got on the board with a two-run Tyler Heineman home run in the fourth and a two RBI double from M.P. Cokinos in the fifth. They then played add on with a Carlos Perdomo RBI single in the sixth, and a Heineman solo shot in the eighth. The final run came across in the ninth as Delino DeShields walked, tooked second base on an error, stole third base and then stole home on an intentional walk pitch. Yeah, that happened. DeShield has now stolen 10 bases in his last 10 games after stealing only 18 bags in his first 59 games.
Quad Cities - Off Day
Aberdeen over Tri-City 8-2 in 10 innings
Yeah, you read that right. Tri-City gave up six runs in the top of the 10th inning, a hill that was way too steep to climb in the bottom of the frame. Mark Appel had a strong start on his way out of town (as he received a quick promotion to Quad Cities), allowing only three hits and no walks in his three innings of work. He struck out five batters, four of them swinging. Evan Grills (5H 2R 2BB) pitched three and left with the bases loaded in the seventh. Kevin Comer (3.2IP 3H 4R 2BB 3SO) allowed two of Grills' runs to score, plus two of his own, plus another two were charged to Comer courtesy of Pat Christensen (0.1IP 3H 2R HR), who in turn gave up two runs of his own. This is not the right way to pay it forward, guys. Mike Martinez' two-run dinger in the fourth accounted for the only Tri-City runs. That was the only extra base hit of the game. Chan Moon and Tony Kemp each swiped a bag.
GCL Braves over GCL Astros 6-4
Ambiorix de Leon (5.1IP 4H 2R 2BB 4SO) got the start, Raul Rivera (0.2 3H 2R/1ER) got the blown save, and Juan Santos (1IP 1H 2R 3BB 1SO) got the loss. Erick Gonzalez (1IP 1H) was the only Astros pitcher to allow no runs in the game. The Astros got two in the third and then added on one in the seventh on a Jason Martin (2x4) RBI single and one in the eighth on a Brett Booth (1x3 BB) RBI double. Ydarqui Marte went two-for-four with a double and scored two runs. Tyler White also doubled in the game.
DSL Royals over DSL Astros 3-2 in 11 innings
Edwin Villarroel pitched the first five, allowing two runs on six hits and was followed by five from Gerardo Juarez, who allowed only one hit and struck out four. Yonquelys Martinez got the loss in extras. The Astros were held to five hits and two players got them all. Arturo Michelina was two-for-four with a double and an RBI; and Jean Estrella was three-for-four.
Player of the Day: George Springer, come on down. In addition to his four-for-five night, he is hitting .422/.519/.889 in the 13 games since his call-up to AAA.
Pitcher of the Day: Gerardo Juarez is starting to catch my attention. After this latest five-inning scoreless relief outing, Juarez has a 1.14 ERA and a 0.676 WHIP in seven appearances. He has walked only two batters while striking out 20.
Round Rock over Oklahoma City 11-8
Starter Wade LeBlanc allowed nine runs on 11 hits (two home runs) and struck out six in three and a third innings and Jose Valdez added on another two runs without recording an out. Eric Berger, Rhiner Cruz, Philip Humber and Hector Ambriz stopped the bleeding, but the damage was already done. The RedHawks did bang out 17 hits, but were 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position. Marwin Gonzalez was three-for-five with a double and scored two runs; Brandon Laird was three-for-five and scored three runs; and George Springer went four-for-five with a triple, two home runs and five RBI.

Monday's Games
Round Rock over Oklahoma City 12-2
This one started off badly and then just got worse. Brett Oberholtzer (4R/3ER) gave up two hits and four straight walks while only recording one out before being lifted for Alex Sogard. Sogard got a quick double play to limit the damage and went on to strike out the side in the second, but things went south again in the third as five hits and two walks (one intentional) blossomed into another six Round Rock runs. Rhiner Cruz allowed the final two runs in the fourth before he, Jason Stoffel, Kevin Chapman and Che-Hsuan Lin provided scoreless relief the rest of the way. It is the second time that OF Lin has been called upon to pitch in the last four games. OKC put up one run in the seventh and one in the eighth (RBI from Fernando Martinez and Jose Martinez), but "too much, too little, too late." Jake Elmore went two-for-four; Marc Krauss was two-for-four with a double and a run scored; and Jon Singleton was one-for-four with a double and a strikeout in his second AAA appearance.
San Antonio over Corpus Christi 8-6
Bobby Doran (3IP 6H 3R 1BB 4SO) got the start and Corpus was leading until a four-run fifth derailed the team. Nick Tropeano (4IP 7H 4R 4SO) was charged with the loss. Andrew Robinson pitched the final two frames and gave up a solo home run, one of only two hits he allowed. The Hooks put two across in the first on a George Springer single and a Jonathan Meyer (1x3 2B BB) sac fly. Jio Mier (2x5 2R) followed up with a two-run home run in the second, his fifth long ball of the season. Kiké Hernandez added on a solo homer in the third, and George Springer doubled in Zach Johnson (2x4 2B 2R) for the final Hooks run in the fourth. Rene Garcia was two-for-five with a double and a run scored.

Tri-City over Vermont 9-3
Evan Grills got the first start of the Tri-City season and gave up one run by way of a solo home run in his four innings of work. He allowed three hits, walked two and struck out two. Edison Frias (3H 2R 1SO) provided one inning of relief before the second half of the tandem came in. Kevin Comer allowed only one hit and one walk while striking out five in his four innings. The offensive output was rather impressive with LF Jon Kemmer leading the charge.
Ronnie Mitchell and Tony Kemp each swiped a bag as well.
DSL Athletics over DSL Astros 1-0 in 12 innings
This was an unbelievable pitcher's duel in the DSL with Harold Arauz (5IP 4H 5SO), Javier Lozano (3IP 1H 6SO) and Gerardo Juarez (3IP 2H 4SO) allowing zero runs and zero walks in the first 11 innings before Victor Mesa got touched for a solo home run in the 12th. The Astros were held to four hits with 2B Arturo Michelina getting two of them.
Player of the Day: Jon Kemmer gets the nod in his first professional appearance -- four-for-four with a two-run home run and a walk is certainly a nice start by any measure.
Pitcher of the Day: I'm going to give Kevin Comer honorable mention for his excellent first Tri-City start, but I've got to go with the DSL pitchers (Arauz, Lozano and Juarez) for their 11 shutout innings. The fact that they didn't walk a batter in those 11 innings puts them over the top. Great job!
