A couple of top arms and yet another under-the-radar arm all appeared in a new league for the first time.

Fresno 4, Sacramento 1

W- Rogelio Armenteros (1-0, 3-3 season)
L- Andrew Suarez (2-2)
S- Kyle Smith (1, 3 season)

Fresno home runs: Max Stassi 2 (10; solo in 3rd, solo in 5th)

Rogelio Armenteros had an excellent AAA debut and Max Stassi launched a couple of solo shots. The Grizzlies took their 11th consecutive game and swept the RiverCats. Since switching affiliations from the Giants to the Astros, Fresno has gone 34-14 against Sacramento (per Paul Braverman).

Armenteros allowed 2 hits, walked 3, and struck out 8 over 6 shutout innings. The RiverCats spoiled the shutout with a sac fly off of Kyle Smith in the 7th. Smith went 3 innings, allowing 3 hits and striking out 2.

Max Stassi whacked his first solo homer of the evening in the 3rd to open the scoring, then launched another one in the 5th. Tyler White and Reid Brignac hit RBI singles in the 6th and the 7th, respectively. Stassi's two hits were the solo blasts; he was the only player on either side to finish with a multi-hit game.

Tonight, the Grizzlies will take the field as the Tacos on a special Taco Tuesday on this Fourth of July. Trent Thornton starts the first of a 3-game set with Salt Lake at 6:35 Pacific.

Arkansas 4, Corpus Christi 0

W- Lindsey Caughel (5-7)
L- Cy Sneed (7-5)

CC home runs: None.

This tour of Arkansas has been rough on the Hooks.

Kyle Tucker went 2-4. Jason Martin's double was Corpus Christi's only extra-base hit.

Cy Sneed allowed 4 runs on 10 hits and struck out 4 in 4.2 innings. Andrew Walter allowed a hit and struck out 3 over 2.1 scoreless, and Jacob Dorris struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 8th.

Framber Valdez takes the mound as the Hooks look to avoid getting swept out of Arkansas. He'll face Justin DeFratus at 5:30.

Buies Creek 6, Potomac 0

W- Forrest Whitley (1-0, 3-3 season)
L- Hector Silvestre (7-3)
S- Justin Ferrell (2)

BC home runs: Ryne Birk (7, solo in 1st), Stephen Wrenn (2, 5 season; solo in 2nd)

The Potomac Nationals were not ready for Forrest Whitley, who along with Justin Ferrell, rendered their offense useless.

Whitley went 5 innings, walking 1 and striking out 9 in a dominant Carolina League debut. Ferrell completed the shutout by allowing 3 hits, walking 1, and striking out 4 over the final 4 innings. Whitley now has 76 strikeouts in just 51.1 innings this season.

Ryne Birk got things started in the 1st when he whacked a solo homer. Stephen Wrenn began the 2nd inning with the first inside-the-park home run in Buies Creek/Fayetteville franchise history. Two batters later, Randy César ripped a double and scored on Anibal Sierra's single. César scored on an error that allowed Birk to reach in the 7th, and finally in the 8th, Alex De Goti drew a bases-loaded walk and Sierra beat a double play attempt which allowed Spencer Johnson to score. César had 1/3 of the Carolina Stros' hits, finishing 3-4 and scoring twice.

Buies Creek will spend this Fourth of July in Myrtle Beach. Brett Adcock takes on Ryan Kellogg in the first of a 3-game series at 7:05 Eastern.

Quad Cities 8, Burlington 6

W- César Rosado (1-0, 2-0 season)
L- Joe Gatto (5-7)

QC home runs: Josh Rojas (2, solo in 2nd)

The Banditos bashed 16 hits and César Rosado was a winner in his Midwest League debut.

Gabriel Valdez got the start and went 4.2 innings, allowing 5 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits, walking 2, and striking out 2. César Rosado threw the final 4.1 innings and allowed his first run of the season when Richard Fectau took him deep for a solo homer in the bottom of the 9th. Other than that, Rosado continued his dominant start to his season, allowing one other hit and striking out 6.

Quad Cities scored two in each of the first two innings of this one. Troy Sieber hit an RBI single in the 1st to open the scoring and an error on the play allowed Chuckie Robinson to come home with another run. Josh Rojas led off the 2nd with a homer and Carmen Benedetti ripped an RBI double later in the frame. Both teams scored 3 in the 4th; Quad Cities' 3 came on a Jonathan Arauz single, Benedetti's 2nd RBI double of the evening, and a groundout from Sieber. Robinson scored on a Wander Franco sac fly in the 6th.

Benedetti turned in the first 5-hit game of his career. Sieber finished 3-5, while Arauz and Rojas both went 2-5.

The Banditos are back home and they'll start a 3-game series with Kane County at 6:35. Yohan Ramirez will face Emilio Vargas.

Staten Island 5, Tri-City 0

W- Jorge Guzman (3-0)
L- Juan Robles (0-1, 1-1 season)

TC home runs: None.

The ValleyCats were absolutely helpless against Jorge Guzman, who racked up double-digit strikeouts against (most of) his old teammates.

Connor MacDonald doubled and J.J. Matijevic singled. That was all she wrote for Tri-City's offense.

Juan Robles went 4 innings and allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4. The one run that Nathan Thompson allowed in his 3 innings came on a solo homer hit by Nelson Gomez in the 6th. Thompson allowed 2 other hits, walked 1, and fanned 4. Robert Corniel worked around a hit to throw a scoreless 8th, striking out 1.

The ValleyCats are back home to start a 3-game series with Brooklyn. Cristian Javier will start game 1, which begins at 6:30 Eastern.

Greeneville and Kingsport was postponed

Due to rain. This game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on August 12.

The Appy Astros will kick off a 3-game series with Johnson City at 7:00 Eastern.

From June 15: DSL Astros Blue 5, DSL Royals 1

Blue home runs: None.

I guess this game wasn't made official because they went ahead and finished it up. It had been suspended due to rain back on June 15 with the Blue team leading 2-1 in the top of the 6th.

César Cortez hit a sac fly to put the Blue team on the board in the 3rd inning. Ronaldo Urdaneta walked in the go-ahead run in the top of the 7th. When play resumed, Kendy Moya tacked on a couple of more runs with a double, and Leonardo Gonzalez hit an RBI single in the 9th.

Angel Macuare went 4 innings and allowed an unearned run on 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 7. Antonio Pujols allowed a hit and struck out 5 over 5 scoreless.

DSL Astros Blue 9, DSL Royals 3

W- Jonger Ochoa (1-0)
L- Adan Frias (0-1)

Blue home runs: None.

Yorbin Ceuta and Freddy Chirino both went 2-4 with 2 RBI. Leonardo Gonzalez also turned in a 2-4 day for the Blue team with a double and an RBI.

Jose Antonio Hernandez allowed one scoring play in his 4 innings, a 2-run homer to Ismaldo Rodriguez in the 5th. Hernandez allowed one other hit, walked 1, and struck out 3. Jonger Ochoa allowed a hit and struck out 1 over 2 scoreless, and Nathanael Ventura hit a batter with the baess loaded, walked 3, and struck out 2 in the 9th.

DSL Pirates 9, DSL Astros Orange 8

W- Wilmer Contreras (4-0)
L- Diosward Gonzalez (2-2)

Orange home runs: None.

Ramiro Rodriguez went 3-5 with 3 RBI and a stolen base (3). Deury Carrasco and Jose Alvarez both scored twice. Sean Mendoza went 2-2 with an RBI and scored a run.

Carlos Perdomo and Luis De Paula started with 2 innings apiece, with varying results. Perdomo allowed 3 runs (1 inherited runner charged to him) on 2 hits, walked 5, and struck out 1, while De Paula struck out 1. Diosward Gonzalez went 4.1 innings and allowed 6 runs (2 earned, 2 inherited runners charged to him) on 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 6. Fredy Medina walked 1 and got the last two outs of the 9th.

The Astros' upper minors clubs are doing battle with the Padres' upper-level farm clubs this weekend.

Fresno 9, El Paso 5

W- Trent Thornton (3-2. 4-4 season)
L- Matt Magill (3-4)

Fresno home runs: Tyler White 2 (7; solo in 1st, solo in 6th), Colin Moran 2 (11; solo in 2nd, 2-run in 5th), A.J. Reed (10, solo in 2nd), Max Stassi (5, solo in 4th)

The Grizzlies battered the Chihuahuas with 6 homers. They suddenly forgot how to play defense in the 7th, but at least they had a 9-run cushion to work with and they managed to right the ship to come away with the win.

Fresno got on the board first courtesy of a Tyler White solo homer in the 1st. Colin Moran and A.J. Reed launched back-to-back homers to start the 2nd. Max Stassi led off the 4th with a homer, and two batters later, Alejandro Garcia ripped a... double to drive in Reid Brignac. Moran whacked a 2-run homer in the 5th, and White smacked his 2nd solo homer of the night in the 6th. White finished 3-5 on the evening, while Moran, Reed, and Brignac all had 2 hits.

Trent Thornton allowed 4 hits and struck out 4 over 6 shutout innings. Brendan McCurry got a double play in the 6th to erase an error, but getting that last out proved to be an adventure. He allowed 5 runs (1 earned, 2 inherited runners charged to him) on 4 hits. To be fair though, the defense didn't exactly do him any favors because they committed two errors while he was on the mound. Reymin Guduan struck out Christian Villanueva to get the elusive final out of the 6th, but not before an error allowed the two runners he inherited from McCurry to score. Guduan struck out 3 in his 1.1 innings; 2 of those came in a 1-2-3 8th. Jordan Jankowski struck out 1 in a 1-2-3 9th.

Mike Hauschild starts the series finale and he'll go up against Henderson native Tyrell Jenkins at 6:05 Mountain.

San Antonio 3, Corpus Christi 1

W- T.J. Weir (2-1)
L- Andrew Thome (3-4, 3-5 season)

CC home runs: None.

The Missions got 2 off Andrew Thome in the 8th to nip the Hooks.

Trent Woodward went 2-4 and opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 2nd. Jason Martin, who was thrown out trying to score another run on the play, also finished 2-4.

Kyle Smith threw 5 perfect frames in his previous start and kept his momentum going on Saturday night with 6 strong innings, allowing an unearned run on 3 hits, walking 1, and striking out a season-high 8 batters. Andrew Thome threw a 1-2-3 7th, but the Missions got to him in the 8th with a pair of RBI singles. Thome allowed 4 hits and struck out 5 in his 2 innings.

Alex Winkelman faces Michael Kelly in game 2 of this series. First pitch is at 2:05.

Wilmington 8, Buies Creek 7

BC home runs: None.

The Carolina Stros managed to shake off a 1st-inning grand slam, but the Blue Rocks got a run in each of their final 3 innings to snatch the win.

Buies Creek got on the board in the 2nd as Dex McCall ripped an RBI double and Spencer Johnson scored on an Anibal Sierra groundout. They took the lead with 4 in the 4th.

Stephen Wrenn reached on an error and made it to 2nd to start the inning. McCall walked to join him on the bases. Sierra went down on strikes for the first out, but Myles Straw legged out an infield single to load the bases for Alex De Goti, who walked Wrenn home. Jake Rogers followed with an RBI single. Straw looked to be dead to rights at home... the problem was, Wilmington catcher Chase Vallot dropped the ball. De Goti scored on a sac fly from Anthony Hermelyn. Straw hit an RBI infield single in the 5th.

Everyone in the lineup recorded a hit. Hermelyn went 3-5, while Straw (RBI, R, SB), Randy César, and Stephen Wrenn (2 R) all turned in 2-hit games.

Hector Perez went 3.2 innings and allowed 5 runs (4 earned) on 5 hits (grand slam), walked 5, and struck out 1. Sebastian Kessay got Perez out of a bases-loaded predicament to end the 4th without incident. Kessay ended up going 3.1 innings and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits and fanned 3. Ralph Garza Jr. allowed a run on 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1 in the 8th.

Buies Creek and Wilmington will wrap up their series at 1:35 Eastern as Franklin Perez faces Scott Blewett.

Quad Cities 13, Beloit 5

W- Erasmo Pinales (2-1)
L- Jhenderson Hurtado (0-1)

QC home runs: Marcos Almonte (7, solo in 3rd), Carmen Benedetti (2, 3-run in 8th)

The Banditos went on a 12-1 run over the remainder of the game after falling behind 4-1 after the first two innings.

Carlos Sanabria went 3 innings and allowed 4 runs on 6 hits (3-run homer), walked 2, and struck out 5. Erasmo Pinales stopped the bleeding with 4 scoreless, allowing just 1 hit, walking 1, and striking out 4. Abdiel Saldaña allowed a run on 3 hits and struck out 3 over the final 2 innings.

Ronnie Dawson opened the scoring with a sac fly in the 1st. Marcos Almonte led off the 3rd with a solo homer, then three walks loaded the bases for Taylor Jones, who got plunked to bring in another run. Daz Cameron followed with a 2-run double.

Daz added another RBI double to his ledger in the 5th inning. Carmen Benedetti launched a 3-run homer in the 8th, and Quad Cities tacked on 4 more in the 9th for good measure. Yordan Alvarez got plunked with the bases loaded. Chuckie Robinson reached on a fielder's choice that scored Almonte; an error on the play also allowed Benedetti to score. Alvarez scored the final run of the evening when Osvaldo Duarte beat out a double play attempt.

Almonte went 4-6, scored 4 times, and stole a base (7). Daz finished 3-4 with a couple of doubles, a run scored, and a stolen base (13). Benedetti, Duarte, and Jonathan Arauz each had 2 hits. Jones didn't score a run, while Arauz didn't drive in a run.

Forrest Whitley starts game 3 of this series. He'll face Mitchell Jordan at 2:00.

DSL Marlins 5, DSL Astros Blue 4

W- Elkin Alcala (1-0)
L- Ronny Garcia (0-1)

Blue home runs: None.

The Marlins scored 5 in the top of the 9th to stun the Blue team.

Ronaldo Marrero allowed 2 hits and struck out 5 over 5 shutout innings. Marrero is converting to a pitcher with the Astros after starting his career at 2B with the Phillies, who originally signed him in 2013.

Denilson Lugo pitched 3 scoreless innings, but the 9th proved to be a nightmare as he allowed 4 runs (1 inherited runner charged to him) on 5 hits, walked 2, and struck out 1 in 3.2 innings. Ronny Garcia got the final out of the 9th, but he also allowed what turned out to be the game-winning run and 2 hits.

Yorbin Ceuta opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 3rd. Alfredo Angarita ripped an RBI triple in the 5th and scored on an error that also allowed Ceuta to reach safely; Ceuta was credited with an RBI. César Cortez hit an RBI groundout in the 7th. Ronaldo Urdaneta went 3-4 with a double, 2 stolen bases (4), and scored 3 of the Blue team's 4 runs on the day.

The Blue team will take on the Marlins again on Monday.

DSL Cubs1 4, DSL Astros Orange 3

W- Edward Vasquez (1-0)
L- Angel Ortega (1-1)

Orange home runs: None.

The 9th inning proved to be unkind to both DSL teams on Saturday. The Orange team ended up walking off with a loss.

All 3 of Team Orange's runs came in the 2nd: Ramiro Rodriguez scored on a wild pitch strikeout and Jose Barajas ripped a 2-run double.

Jesus Bernaez went 3 innings and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 4. Asael Uribe was the first man out of the Orange team's bullpen and threw 4 scoreless, allowing a hit, walking 4, and fanning 5. The one hit that Angel Ortega allowed was costly because it was a walk-off homer. Ortega also allowed an unearned run and walked 1 in his 1.2 innings.

These two teams play again on Monday.

Happy Dominican Summer League Opening Day!

Fresno 3, Tacoma 2

W- Dayan Diaz (4-0)

Fresno home runs: None.

The Grizzlies walked off with the win thanks to Preston Tucker's 2-out RBI single in the bottom of the 9th. D.J. Fisher went 2-4 and drove in the other two Fresno runs with an RBI double in the 6th and an RBI single in the 7th. Fisher now has a 9-game hitting streak.

David Martinez turned in 6.2 solid innings, allowing a run (which was an inherited runner that was charged to him) on 4 hits, walking 2, and striking out 2. Brendan McCurry got the final out of the 7th and the first out of the 8th. He allowed an unearned run on 2 hits and struck out 1. Dayan Diaz retired all 5 Tacoma hitters he faced, getting 4 groundball outs and a flyout.

Dean Deetz makes his AAA debut in the series finale. He'll take on Andrew Moore at 1:05 Pacific.

Corpus Christi 5, Tulsa 3

W- Kyle Smith (2-1)
L- Walked Buehler (1-1)
S- Jacob Dorris (3)

CC home runs: Drew Ferguson (6, solo in 1st), J.D. Davis (13, solo in 4th)

The Hooks didn't have much luck against Walker Buehler in Corpus last Sunday. They didn't fare much better on Saturday, getting only two hits off him. However, those two hits were home runs. Neither team put up a crooked number in this game, so the Hooks won in the simplest way possible: by scoring a run in more innings than the Drillers did.

Drew Ferguson got Buehler to lead off the ballgame, and J.D. Davis took him deep to begin the 4th. Ferguson added an RBI single to his ledger in the 7th. Jack Mayfield hit an RBI single in the 8th, and Kyle Tucker ripped an RBI double in the 9th. Davis finished 3-5 with the solo homer and scored on Mayfield's single. Ferguson's two hits both drove in runs.

Kyle Smith was perfect through 5 innings, striking out 4. Akeem Bostick tagged in for 3 innings and allowed 3 runs on 6 hits (solo homer), walked 1, and struck out 1. Jacob Dorris worked around a single and a walk to close it out, striking out 2 in the 9th.

Alex Winkelman will make his second Texas League start in the series finale. He'll face Isaac Anderson at 1:05.

Buies Creek 7, Carolina 3

W- Justin Ferrell (5-3)
L- Kodi Medeiros (3-4)

BC home runs: Anibal Sierra (2, solo in 4th)

The Carolina Stros fought back to earn a series split after dropping the first two games.

Framber Valdez went 4.1 innings and allowed a run on 4 hits, walked 3, and struck out 7. Justin Ferrell was the first man out of the Buies Creek bullpen and threw 3.2 innings, allowing a run on 2 hits, walking 4, and striking out 2. Sebastian Kessay allowed an unearned run on a groundout, a single, and struck out 1 in the 9th.

Jake Rogers put Buies Creek on the board first with an RBI single in the 1st. He then stole 2nd and scored on Alex De Goti's double. Spencer Johnson tripled to lead off the bottom of the 2nd and scored on a single from Myles Straw. Anibal Sierra smacked a solo homer with 2 outs in the bottom of the 4th inning. De Goti added a sac fly to his ledger in the 5th, and Ryne Birk hit a 2-run single in the 6th. Straw finished 3-5 on the evening, while Birk went 2-4. Johnson and Sierra scored two runs apiece from the bottom two spots in the lineup.

The Astros welcome Myrtle Beach to Jim Perry Stadium for a 3-game set starting at 4:00 Eastern. Franklin Perez will go up against Justin Steele.

Kane County 5, Quad Cities 2

W- Jon Duplantier (6-0)
L- Cionel Perez (3-3)
S- Tommy Eveld (11)

QC home runs: Osvaldo Duarte (4, solo in 3rd)

The Banditos were the first team this season to record more than 5 hits against Kane County starter Jon Duplantier, who has mowed down the Midwest League this season. However, they only got two runs to show for it.

Osvaldo Duarte launched a solo homer in the 3rd to put Quad Cities on the board. Daz Cameron scored their only other run on a wild pitch in the 7th. Yordan Alvarez and Chuckie Robinson had 2 hits apiece; Alvarez extended his hitting streak to 9 games.

Cionel Perez went 5.2 innings and allowed 5 runs (3 earned) on 8 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2. Abdiel Saldaña allowed a hit and fanned 2 in 2.1 scoreless innings, and Kevin Hill worked around a walk to throw a scoreless 9th, striking out 1.

Quad Cities and Kane County will wrap up their series at 5:15 as Forrest Whitley faces Emilio Vargas.

DSL Braves 8, DSL Astros Blue 5

W- Walner Polanco (1-0)
L- Angel Macuare (0-1)

Blue home runs: None.

The Braves seized control with 7 runs in the 2nd inning. The Blue team managed to fight back, but that deficit proved to be too much to overcome.

Ozziel Sanchez-Galan hit a one-out triple in the 6th and scored the Blue team's first run of the season on a single from César Cortez. In the 7th, Yorbin Ceuta reached on an error that resulted in Anthony Rodriguez coming in to score; Ceuta was credited with an RBI on the play. Rodriguez scored again in the 9th when Ceuta grounded into a double play. Brandon Benavente scored on another Braves error and Cortez drew a bases-loaded walk. Sanchez-Galan went 2-4 and scored twice.

Diosward Gonzalez went 4 innings and allowed an unearned run on 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 6. Carlos Perdomo tagged in for 3 innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits, walking 4, and striking out 6. Angel Ortega allowed a hit and walked 1 over 2 scoreless.

Deury Carrasco walked to lead off the bottom of the 1st and scored on Samir Caraballo's triple. This was their only scoring play until the 7th; in the meantime, the Brewdians took a 3-1 lead.

Euclides Chavez doubled to lead off the 7th, advanced to 3rd on a Jose Alvarez groundout, and scored on a Gerry Castillo groundout. Team Orange took the lead with 3 in the 8th. Caraballo walked to begin the frame, and Ramiro Rodriguez joined him on the bases with a single. They both advanced when Leandro Gonzalez laid down a sac bunt, and Caraballo scored the tying run on a sac fly from Chavez. Rodriguez scored the go-ahead run on an errant pickoff throw, and Castillo capped off the morning with an RBI single. Chavez finished 2-3, as did Sean Mendoza.

Fresno jumped out to an early 5-2 lead but Albuquerque finished this one on a 9-1 run.

Casey Coleman went 6.2 innings and allowed 7 runs (6 earned) on 6 hits (3-run homer), walked 2, and struck out 9. The 4 runs that Brian Holmes allowed in his 1.2 innings came on an 8th-inning grand slam from Rafael Ynoa. Holmes allowed 3 other hits, walked 2, and struck out 1. Ryan Thompson got the final two outs of the 9th without incident.

Teoscar Hernandez opened the scoring with an RBI double in the 1st inning and Colin Moran followed with a 2-run single. Reid Brignac hit an RBI single in the 3rd, and D.J. Fisher smacked an RBI double in the 6th. Fisher finished 3-5, while Moran, Brignac, and Preston Tucker all finished with 2 hits apiece.

David Martinez will take on Ryan Carpenter in game 2 of this series. First pitch is at 1:05 Pacific.

The Hooks were outhit 10-4. Usually, that doesn't bode well for a team when they get outhit by that margin, but Corpus managed to score the only run of the game.

Drew Ferguson's 23-game hitting streak fell by the wayside, but he scored only run of the evening when Jon Singleton drew a bases-loaded walk in the 3rd inning. Trent Woodward's double was Corpus Christi's only extra-base hit.

Akeem Bostick allowed 7 hits and fanned 3 in 5 innings and Kyle Smith completed the shutout, allowing 3 hits and striking out 7 over the final 4 innings.

Dean Deetz would have started the series finale, but he was placed on the DL on Tuesday. His replacement will go up against Walker Buehler at 6:05.

Buies Creek's bats went quiet on Saturday night; all they could muster up on offense was a double from Dex McCall and a Randy César single. They managed to walk 7 times against Frederick starter Ofelky Peralta but couldn't take advantage of the free baserunners.

Framber Valdez went 4.2 innings and allowed 6 runs (2 inherited runners charged to him) on 5 hits (2-run homer), walked 2, and struck out 4. Ralph Garza Jr. didn't allow any runs of his own in 3.1 innings, but the two runners he inherited from Valdez both scored. Garza allowed 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 4.

The Astros and Keys continue their series at 6:00 Eastern as Hector Perez goes up against Reid Love.

Alvarez ripped two RBI doubles; he opened the scoring in the 1st with the first one and smacked another in the 3rd inning. Alex De Goti brought him in following his first RBI double. Wander Franco went 2-4 with a double and a stolen base.

Cionel Perez threw 7 no-hit innings his last time out; what does he have for a follow-up performance? He'll take on Ty Damron at 5:15.

A 7-run 4th from the Sounds doomed the Tacos. Fresno has lost every game they've played as the Tacos so far.

David Martinez got roughed up... and I think some things are better left unsaid. Tyson Perez was the first man out of the bullpen and went 1.2 innings; the two runs he allowed came on a homer hit by Jaycob Brugman in the 5th. Perez allowed 2 other hits, walked 1, and struck out 1. Reymin Guduan allowed 2 hits and struck out 4 over 2 scoreless. Aaron West and Andrew Aplin both pitched a scoreless inning; West allowed 2 hits and fanned 2 in the 8th, while Aplin worked around a walk to throw a scoreless 9th, striking out 1.

Colin Moran put the Tacos on the board with a solo shot in the 2nd inning. Tyler White pulled three runs back in the 4th when he clubbed a homer. Fresno got a pair in the 9th on a couple of RBI doubles from A.J. Reed and Juan Centeno, who extended his hitting streak to 15 games. He, Tony Kemp, and Teoscar Hernandez all finished with 2 hits on the night.

Game 3 of this series will start at 12:05 Pacific. David Paulino will make his second appearance of the year and he'll take on Daniel Gossett.

The Hooks got some crucial insurance runs in the 9th to take game 2 of this iteration of the I-37 Series.

Jon Singleton opened the scoring with a solo blast in the 4th inning, and J.D. Davis smacked one of his own in the 5th. He added an RBI double to his ledger in the 9th and came around to score on a single from Ramon Laureano. Davis was the only player in the Corpus lineup with a multi-hit game.

Kyle Smith allowed a run on 6 hits and struck out 4 in 5 innings of work. Carlos Hiraldo and Andrew Thome both pitched 2 scoreless innings; Hiraldo allowed 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3, while Thome allowed 2 hits and fanned 2 to get the save.

Kent Emanuel will face Brett Kennedy in game 3. First pitch is at 7:05.

Buies Creek 5, Myrtle Beach 1

Hector Perez turned in his best outing of the year and Yohan Ramirez shut the door as the Carolina Stros have taken the first two games in a four-game set in the Grand Strand.

Perez has had some issues with walks this year but this was his first walk-free appearance. He threw 6 shutout innings, allowing 5 hits and striking out 7. The Pelicans spoiled the shutout with a run against Ramirez in the 9th, but he managed to pull himself together to finish the game. In 3 innings, he allowed that run on 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3.

Myles Straw walked to lead off the game and came around to score when Jason Martin launched a 2-run homer to open the scoring. Buies Creek got 2 more in the 2nd as Arturo Michelena smacked a 2-run double. The Astros' last scoring play of the evening came in the 8th when Eduardo de Oleo hit an RBI infield single.

Brett Adcock will look to get himself back on track after a rough introduction to the Carolina League. He'll go up against Thomas Hatch at 7:05 Eastern.

Quad Cities 8, Burlington 1

QC home runs: Yordan Alvarez (1, solo in 8th)

The Banditos improved to .500 as they knocked the Bees around again.

Osvaldo Duarte walked to lead off the bottom of the 1st. He then stole 2nd and scored the first run of the day on a Chuckie Robinson triple. Yordan Alvarez had a nice outing; he ripped an RBI double in the 2nd and then scored on a sac fly from Duarte. Rodrigo Ayarza followed with an RBI single. Carmen Benedetti ripped an RBI double in the 4th, and Robinson added an RBI single to his ledger in the 7th. Alvarez capped it off with a solo blast in the 8th, his first homer of the year.

The bottom third of the Quad Cities lineup, which consisted of Alvarez, Taylor Jones, and Benedetti, all finished with two hits on the afternoon and accounted for all of the doubles the club hit and 5 of the 8 runs they scored. Robinson also finished with two hits; he now has a 6-game hitting streak.

Dustin Hunt pitched 3.2 innings and allowed a hit, walked 3, hit 2 batters, and struck out 4. Kevin Hill was the first man out of the Quad Cities bullpen and allowed a run on 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 5 in 2.1 innings. Lucas Williams allowed a hit over 2 scoreless, and Salvador Montaño worked around a hit and a walk to throw a scoreless 9th.

Quad Cities and Burlington will wrap up this series at 6:35 as Forrest Whitley takes on Erik Manoah.

The Grizzlies have won the first game of a series for the first time in 2017. They entered this game 0-8 in series openers.

David Paulino threw 3 scoreless innings in his season debut, allowing a hit, walking 4, and striking out 4. David Martinez also threw 3 innings; the three runs he allowed came on three solo homers which happen to be the only hits he allowed in this outing. Martinez also walked and struck out a batter. Kevin Comer worked around a hit and a walk to throw a scoreless 7th, striking out 2, and Jordan Jankowski recorded a strikeout and threw two perfect innings to get the save.

Tyler White opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the 1st inning. Fresno struck for 3 in the 2nd with an RBI single from Tony Kemp and a 2-run single from Preston Tucker. Kemp grounded into a force out that scored Reid Brignac in the 6th. Brignac finished 3-4 and scored a couple of runs. Kemp and Teoscar Hernandez both finished with two hits on the night. It was also nice to see Teoscar back in action after that terrifying collision with Jose Altuve in Cleveland.

Trent Thornton takes the mound for game 2 of this series. He'll be opposed by Justin Masterson. First pitch is at 7:05.

Midland 3, Corpus Christi 1

Make that nine consecutive defeats for the Hooks. This time, the RockHounds' pitchers shackled the Corpus offense just long enough for their offense to come alive in the final two frames.

Kyle Smith allowed just 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 6 over 6 shutout innings. Eric Peterson was the first man out of the Hooks bullpen and allowed 2 runs (1 inherited runner charged to him) on 3 hits and fanned 1. Michael Freeman got the final out of the 8th, but not before allowing two singles, one of which allowed the go-ahead run to score and a walk to load the bases. Fortunately, nothing came of that bases-loaded situation. Riley Ferrell allowed a run on a wild pitch, a single, and walked 1 in the 9th.

Alejandro Garcia opened the scoring with an RBI double in the 4th that was Corpus Christi's lone scoring play. Bobby Boyd hit a triple, while Garrett Stubbs swiped his 3rd base of the year.

Game 2 of this series will have Dean Deetz taking on Corey Walter at 7:05.

Salem 10, Buies Creek 8

Brett Adcock got a rude welcome to the Carolina League and the Astros made things a bit interesting, but their comeback bid fell short.

Adcock, who was just promoted from Quad Cities, allowed 7 runs (2 inherited runners charged to him) on 9 hits (2 solo homers), walked 1, and struck out 3 in 3.1 innings. Carlos Sierra was the first man out of the Buies Creek bullpen and threw 1.1 innings, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits, walking 1, and striking out 1. Ralph Garza Jr. stopped the bleeding by throwing 3.1 scoreless innings; he allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and fanned 5. Howie Brey struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 9th inning.

Eduardo de Oleo put Buies Creek on the board with an RBI single in the 4th inning. Later in the frame, Anthony Hermelyn drove in another run with an RBI single of his own and de Oleo scored on a passed ball.

In the 6th, Ryne Birk hit a sac fly and Johnny Sewald ripped an RBI double. Kyle Tucker smacked an RBI double in the 7th. Birk doubled to lead off the 8th and scored on Hermelyn's 2nd RBI single of the game. Little Tuck tripled to begin the bottom of the 9th and came home on a Dex McCall groundout. Tucker, Birk, and Hermelyn all finished with 2 hits in the game.

The Astros are back on the road for 11 games, starting in Kinston, North Carolina against the Down East Wood Ducks. The Carolina League's two newest franchises will do battle in a 3-game series. Alex Winkelman will start the opener, and he'll be opposed by Emerson Martinez. First pitch is at 7:00 Eastern.

The Dragons got the jump on Forrest Whitley with three runs in the bottom of the 1st as they took the series opener.

To his credit, Whitley pulled himself together and finished well, even though 4 runs in 5 innings doesn't look very pretty. He allowed 7 hits (solo homer), walked 1, and struck out 6. Erasmo Pinales pitched the final 3 innings and allowed a run on a wild pitch in the 8th, a triple to lead off the 8th, walked 2, and struck out 4.

Jake Rogers launched a solo blast in the 1st to open the scoring. Chuckie Robinson doubled to lead off the 2nd and scored on a single from Taylor Jones, and Rodrigo Ayarza hit an RBI single in the 7th. Rogers and Robinson finished with 2 hits apiece. Daz Cameron stole a couple of bases, giving him 8 on the season.

Jorge Alcala will start game 2 of this series. He'll take on Andrew Jordan at 7:00 Eastern.

The Grizzlies took control with a 4-run 8th to break a 1-1 tie.

D.J. Fisher opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 1st inning but was caught stealing home for the final out of the frame. This was Fresno's only scoring play until the 8th; Reno scored their run in the 2nd to tie the game.

Jon Kemmer led off the 8th with a double and scored on an error after Fisher hit into a fielder's choice. Tyler White moved to third base and Fisher advanced to second on the Aces' gaffe. Colin Moran was given an intentional pass to load the bases, and Max Stassi capitalized with a 2-run single. A.J. Reed followed with an RBI single. Kemmer finished a career-best 5-5 on the night; his final hit was a solo homer to lead off the 9th. Stassi went 4-5, while White went 2-5 with 2 runs scored and a stolen base (2). Stassi had his first 4-hit game since 2014.

In his AAA debut, Trent Thornton went 6 innings and allowed a run on 3 hits, all of which were doubles, and walked 1. Jordan Jankowski, Kevin Comer, and Reymin Guduan all pitched an inning to close out the game: Jankowski struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 7th. Comer worked around a hit to throw a scoreless 8th, striking out 2. The one run Guduan allowed in the 9th came on a homer from Christian Walker. He also allowed one other hit and struck out 1 in the inning.

In game 3 of this series, Mike Hauschild makes his first appearance since being returned by the Rangers. He'll face Eric Jokisch at 1:05 Pacific.

Akeem Bostick was a winner in his Texas League debut; the two runs he allowed in his 5 innings of work both came on solo home runs. Bostick allowed one other hit (a single) and struck out 3. Kyle Smith allowed 2 hits and struck out 2 over the final 4 innings to get the save.

Scott Heineman led off the game with a homer, but the Hooks seized control of the game thanks to a 4-run 3rd inning. All four runs in that inning came with two outs.

Drew Ferguson kept the 3rd inning alive by drawing a walk, and then Jake Marisnick ripped a double to put runners in scoring position for Jon Singleton, who put Corpus on the board and in the lead with a 2-run double. J.D. Davis brought him in with a single, and Garrett Stubbs hit an RBI double to extend the Hooks' lead. Stubbs whacked a solo shot in the 6th. Mott Hyde, Tony Nuñez, and Drew Ferguson hit back-to-back-to-back solo home runs in the 8th inning.

Marisnick went 2-5 in his first rehab appearance; in case you missed it, he is currently on the 7-day DL for concussions. Singleton, Stubbs, Hyde, and Nuñez also finished with 2 hits; Nuñez's homer in the 8th was his first as a professional.

The Astros continue to get fine pitching in this series. On Saturday, three pitchers combined to throw a two-hit shutout.

Elieser Hernandez got the start and allowed just one hit, walked 2, and struck out 4 over 5 shutout innings. Hector Perez came on for his Carolina League debut and threw 3 scoreless, allowing a hit, walking 2, and fanning 6. Nick Hernandez closed it out by striking out 2 in a 1-2-3 9th inning.

Jason Martin opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 1st. Buies Creek missed a chance to blow this game open early as they couldn't convert on a bases-loaded, no out situation in the opening frame. Their other scoring play was a 2-run triple from Kyle Tucker in the 8th inning. Myles Straw was the only player on either side to finish with a multi-hit game; he went 3-4 with two stolen bases (6) and scored a run.

The Astros will look to sweep the series on Sunday and they'll send Gabriel Valdez to the mound. He'll take on Emilio Ogando at 2:00 Eastern.

Quad Cities and Clinton was postponed

Due to rain. The River Bandits and LumberKings will wrap up this series with a doubleheader starting at 1:00. Enoli Paredes will take on Brandon Miller in the first game. Ryan Hartman will start game 2 and he'll face Tim Viehoff.
