Corpus Christi Hooks LHP Alex Sogard saw action in the second game for the Czech Republic. In a video interview last week, Sogard talked about his mother's Czechoslovakian heritage and how excited he was to represent her on the Czech team. And represent he did! Sogard pitched three and two-thirds innings in relief and allowed one run on two hits with three strikeouts in the Czech team's loss to Great Britain. Unfortunately, it was the Czech team's second loss so Alex will be heading home from Regensburg, Germany where this qualifying round took place.
Long-time Astros minor league followers might be interested to know that former Astro Albert Cartwright played for the British team and went 3-for-5 in yesterday's game. And Another former Astro has been making news in Regensburg for the Canadian team. Jimmy VanOstrand went 4-for-6 with two home runs, five RBI and scored three times in Team Canada's win over Germany yesterday.
Astros Josh Zeid and Ben Orloff will take part in the final qualifying round for Team Israel today in Jupiter, Florida. Team Israel is undefeated and will take on Team Spain for the second time in the tournament. Israel defeated Spain on Friday 4-2 in, as one very clever tweeter said, payback for the Spanish Inquisition. If you want to root on Team Israel, you can follow their game on the World Baseball Classic site live at 4:00 CST or watch the delay on MLB network at 7:00 CST this evening.

An Astros Hall of Famer
No, it's not Jeff Bagwell or Craig Biggio .... yet. It is none other than Le Grand Orange himself, Rusty Staub. Rusty Staub, a Colt 45's and Astros player from 1963 to 1968 will be inducted into the Canadian Hall of Fame this summer. As a popular player for the Montreal Expos expansion team, Staub earned the love and respect of the Canadian people as he helped popularize baseball in Canada. The Montreal Gazette explains:
"He went out of his way to become the leading ambassador for baseball in Canada. And in Quebec, fans embraced him as he toured the province each winter, addressing small-town crowds in halting French."
Congratulations to Rusty Staub. He and Gold Medal winner Jimmy VanOstrand will be inducted into the Canadian Hall of Fame on June 23rd.

Pan Am Games Final Update
Canada over U.S.A. 2-1
Canada won out over the U.S. team to earn the gold medal in a tight fast-paced game. Andy Van Hekken pitched a great game for the U.S. team, going seven innings and giving up six hits, two runs and one walk with six strikeouts. And Jimmy VanOstrand only got one hit, but that one hit proved to be a game-winner. With two outs in the sixth, JVO hit a double and drove in two for the Canadian team. Either team could have won this one, but this time Canada prevailed. Both of the "Astro-Vans" can be proud of two well-played tournaments in Panama and Mexico over the last several weeks. They represented their nations and the Astros organization very well.
Here's the story from Baseball America. And here's the story from MiLB.

Cdn veteran Jimmy VanOstrand, who hit a 2-run double: “It’s unbelievable, a completely surreal experience. ...It’s pretty special.”

Baseball World Cup Update
Emerson Frostad had another good game as the Canadian team defeated the U.S. team, going 2-5 with a stolen base and a run scored while teammate Jimmy VanOstrand was 0-3 with 2 walks and a run scored. Andy Van Hekken did not pitch for the U.S. team. Marlon Avea went 1-1 as a pinch hitter in Nicaragua's loss to Cuba.
After the U.S. team loss to Canada, they were on the verge of being eliminated. Chinese Taipei, who had currently won ZERO games, had to beat Puerto Rico last night ... and they did. Now the U.S. team (3-3) will play host country Panama (5-1) in a must win rain-delayed game at 2:00 today. It would be interesting to see Van Hekken pitch in this one.
Canada will advance to Round 2. Nicaragua will not. And the U.S. is still a slim possibility. I will post the schedule when it has been determined.

Baseball World Cup Update
The Canadian team won in 11 innings over previously unbeaten Netherlands. And who was the hero? Not Jimmy VanOstrand this time (going 0-5 but playing solid defense), but Emerson Frostad who came in to pinch hit, stayed in to catch and got an RBI single in the top of the 11th that proved to be the game-winner.
U.S.A. and Panama was postponed because of rain. Marlon Avea went 0-2 with a walk in Nicaragua's loss to the Dominican Republic,
Today's Games:
U.S.A ( 3-2) and Canada (5-1) are set to face off at 2:00 p.m.
Nicaragua (1-5) will face Cuba (6-0) at 7:30 p.m.
