The following retirements and releases have been confirmed.
We already knew about a couple of voluntary retirements, but there are more to report:
RHP Steve Martin - Drafted in the 37th round in 2011. Played last season at Greeneville. UPDATED TO ADD: As I was reminded in the comment below, this is why I was rooting for Steve Martin to make it (from August of 2011).
1B Justin Shults - Drafted in the 46th round in 2011. Played last season with the GCL Astros.
In addition, the following players were released:
RHP Ebert Rosario - Signed out of the Dominican Republic prior to the 2006 season. A converted position player, he played last season at Tri-City.
1B Jimmy Van Ostrand - Drafted in the 8th round in 2006. Played the last 4 seasons at Corpus Christi.
3B David Flores - Drafted in the 18th round in 2008. Split last season between Corpus Christi and Lancaster.
RHP Lance Pendleton - Re-signed as a free agent in November 2011 after pitching in 4 games in Houston in September.

Happy Birthday - 11/16
C Jordan "Funky" Comadena (26)
If you managed to miss this article by Zachary Levine or this Q&A by Astros County or if you don't follow Funky on Twitter (@Funky2414), you have missed getting to know one of the good guys. Signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2009 by none other than Jimmy Wynn, Comadena had a breakout year of sorts at the plate. Used in a limited role at Lancaster, he managed to hit .295/.389/.432/.881 over a very sporadic 95 AB's.
If you follow him on Twitter, you will find him friendly, engaging, and always willing to answer any questions. As a matter of fact, I asked him via twitter to tell me something "non-baseball" about himself for his birthday write-up and he responded right away. In addition to working out and getting ready for the spring, he told me that he is in the planning stages for his wedding to fiance Alicyn to take place next November 10th in Normal, Illinois. "It will be a big wedding and quite a few fellow Astros will hopefully be attending." I'm sure there will be. Everybody likes Funky. Like I said before, he's one of the good guys. Just don't say anything bad about his Steelers.

Drafted out of Texas A&M in the 37th round in 2011, Martin pitched out of the bullpen for the Greeneville Astros this season with an ERA of 6.00 and a WHIP of 1.375. However, against right-handed hitters, he had a 2.87 ERA and a 1.277 WHIP. And in July, in 8 of his 16 appearances, Martin was 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA, a 0.923 WHIP and a 0.98 BA against.
I tried to get in touch with Steve for a brief interview, but I was unable to get his contact information. I wanted to find out more about this. Maybe next year.

Why I'm really rooting for Steve Martin to get to the bigs
Why am I really, really, really hoping that RHP Steve Martin makes it to the major leagues in an Astros uniform one day?
Is it because of the name? All those "wild and crazy guy" jokes and arrows through the head? Well, maybe a little.
Is it because he was picked in the 37th round of the 2011 draft and I always root for the underdog? Yeah, kind of.
Is it because he had a fantastic July for the Greeneville Astros with a 1.38 ERA? And a very respectable .189 BA against? Doesn't hurt.
Is it because he went to Texas A&M? Any roots in Texas are definitely a plus.
But none of that is really, really the reason that I really, really want Steve Martin to go all the way. The real reason is that I want the Houston Astros to have the first player born in Swaziland playing for them. As far as I can tell, no one born in Swaziland has ever played in the MLB. According to Baseball Almanac, the closest country alphabetically is Switzerland and the closest country geographically appears to be Saudi Arabia (although there are 38 listed as unknown and one poor fellow who appears to have been born in the Atlantic Ocean).
Now I don't know the circumstances behind Steve Martin's birth in Mbabne, Swaziland. Heck, I don't even know how to pronounce Mbabne and I had to look on "the google" to see where Swaziland was. And it appears that he probably grew up in Brenham. But none of that matters. The fact remains that he was, indeed, born in Swaziland and that's enough for me.
