Astros Minor League Recaps

Fresno 8, Sacramento 3

W- Josh James (3-4)
L- Daniel Camarena (0-5)

Fresno home runs: Jake Marisnick (3, 2-run in 4th)

The Tacos busted this game open with a four-run 3rd inning, it was #JakeDay in the Central Valley, and Josh James racked up the strikeouts once again.

James, however, had to settle for a bare minimum quality start after the Rivercats got to him for three runs in the 6th. He allowed four hits, walked two, and struck out a dozen in probably the most dominant bare minimum quality start I've heard of. Ken Giles, Dean Deetz, and Buddy Boshers all turned in scoreless innings. Giles, in his first AAA appearance since 2014, allowed two hits and fanned two in the 7th. Sacramento loaded the bases on Deetz in the 8th with a couple of hits and a walk, but he got out of it unscathed, striking out two in the process. Boshers struck out two in a 1-2-3 9th.

Jake doubled with one out in the 3rd and scored on a D.J. Fisher single. Taylor Jones legged out an infield single and J.D. Davis walked to load the bases for Yordan Alvarez, who came through with a two-run single. Jack Mayfield followed with an RBI double. Tony Nuñez walked to start the 4th and one batter later, Marisnick launched a homer. Fisher singled and eventually scored on a base hit from Davis. Mayfield scored Fresno's final run in the 5th on an error after Nuñez flied out.

Jake finished 3-5 on the evening, a triple shy of the cycle. Fisher, Jones, Davis, and Mayfield all finished with two hits in the contest.

Cy Sneed will face Casey Kelly in game three of this series. First pitch is at 7:05 Pacific.

Corpus Christi 4, Frisco 3

W- Ralph Garza Jr. (4-0, 4-1 season)
L- Ryne Slack (1-3)

CC home runs: Stephen Wrenn (7, 2-run in 5th)

Frisco broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the 9th... only to see the Hooks walk off with the win in the bottom of the 9th.

Jorge Alcala turned in the longest outing of his career. He threw eight innings and the two runs he allowed came on a homer, which was the only extra-base hit that he allowed all night. Alcala allowed five other hits, walked one, and struck out eight. Ralph Garza Jr. allowed an unearned run on a sac fly, a single, and struck out one in the 9th.

Both teams hit two-run homers in the 5th; Stephen Wrenn was responsible and his blast in the bottom half tied the game. The Hooks loaded the bases to start the 9th by drawing three walks, one intentionally. Wrenn, who led off the inning, scored the tying run on a sac fly from Chas McCormick. Alex De Goti got plunked to re-load the bases for Eduardo de Oleo, who won it by legging out an infield single that scored Josh Rojas. De Goti finished 3-4 with a double and de Oleo finished 2-5 with the winning base hit. Wrenn scored twice and stole two bases, which gives him 32 thefts on the year.

Hector Perez will make his first Texas League start in the series finale. He'll face Brett Martin at 7:05.

Buies Creek was off

The Carolina Stros will start a three-game series with Salem tonight at 6:00 Eastern.

Quad Cities was off

Parker Mushinski will start the first of a three-game series against South Bend at 6:35. He will be opposed by Erling Moreno.

Brooklyn 5, Tri-City 0

W- Jaison Vilera (3-1)
L- Mark Moclair (1-3)

TC home runs: None.

The ValleyCats were kept off the scoreboard to begin a new series.

Tri-City's only extra-base hit in this game was a double from Alex Holderbach.

Mark Moclair allowed two runs on two hits, walked two, and struck out four in 1.2 innings. Shawn Dubin was the first man out of the Tri-City bullpen and had the longest outing as he allowed a run on four hits and struck out two in 2.1 innings of work. Brett Conine and Hansel Paulino both threw two innings. Conine allowed a run on two hits and struck out three, while Paulino was the only ValleyCats pitcher who turned in a scoreless outing; he allowed a hit and fanned two. Riley Cabral allowed a run on three hits and struck out one in the 9th.

Tri-City gets back to it at 7:00 Eastern.

GCL Astros 4, GCL Nationals 3

W- Miguel Figueroa (1-1)
L- Bobby Milacki (2-1)

GCL home runs: Deury Carrasco (1, solo in 6th)

The Palm Beach Stros scored twice in the 8th to snatch a win from their complex mates.

David Paulino went three innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits, walked one, and struck out two. Jayson Schroeder, the Astros' second-round pick in last month's draft, made his pro debut and worked around a hit and a walk to throw a scoreless 4th. Layne Henderson allowed two hits, walked one, and struck out two in three scoreless, and Miguel Figueroa allowed a couple of hits and struck out one over two scoreless innings.

Sean Mendoza went 2-4 and scored the GCL squad's first run of the day on a Carlos Diaz groundout in the 5th inning. Deury Carrasco smacked a solo homer in the 6th, giving him the first home run of his career. Carrasco tied the game with an RBI triple in the 8th and scored the go-ahead run on Mendoza's single. Carrasco and Yorbin Ceuta also finished with two hits on the afternoon.

DSL Astros 2, DSL Red Sox1 1

W- Valente Bellozo (1-1)
L- Aldo Ramirez (1-2)
S- Alfredi Jimenez (1)

DSL home runs: None.

The Academy only had two hits on the day... but they scored more runs, so they got the win.

Their two runs came on an error that allowed Jeury Castillo and Javier Bermúdez to score in the 2nd inning.

Valente Bellozo allowed three hits, walked two, and struck out two over five shutout innings and Alfredi Jimenez allowed an unearned run on four hits and fanned five over the last four innings.

Astros June 2018 MiLB Standouts

With the calendar turning from June to July, the top five Astros minor league teams are well-poised (with Corpus Christi and Quad Cities assured playoff berths as first-half winners) and the other three teams currently in first place. (We won't talk about the rookie level clubs who are struggling a bit to start their seasons.) Here are a few of the players who have helped contribute to the success of their teams in June. I have noted a few of the more outstanding accomplishments in red.

Note: If a player played at multiple levels during the month of June, he is listed under his current level, but his stats are cumulative.

QUAD CITIES: 14-12 in June (44-36 overall); 3rd place for the season

There aren't a ton of standouts for the Quad Cities team right now largely because most of the players who were instrumental in getting the River Bandits to a first half first place finish have now been promoted. Many on the current roster are new to the level, but I have no doubt that they will get up to speed quickly.

Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Sunday, June 10, 2018

Fresno 12, Oklahoma City 8

W- Rogelio Armenteros (4-0)
L- Guillermo Moscoso (2-4)

Fresno home runs: A.J. Reed 2 (15, 2-run in 3rd, 3-run in 6th), Kyle Tucker (9, solo in 1st), J.D. Davis (5, solo in 3rd), D.J. Fisher (3, solo in 3rd)

The Grizzlies provided some Sunday night fireworks in the form of five home runs. The Dodgers wouldn't go down easily, though.

Rogelio Armenteros went six innings and allowed two runs on five hits, walked three, and struck out three. Kent Emanuel got roughed up in the 7th and I will not elaborate any further. Andrew Thome allowed a hit and got the last out of the 7th. The one run that Brendan McCurry allowed in his 2.1 innings came on a homer hit by Edwin Rios, who tagged Emanuel for a grand slam in OKC's big 7th inning. McCurry struck out one.

Everyone in the lineup chipped in with a hit. Reed, Davis, and Fisher hit back-to-back-to-back home runs in the 3rd inning.

Josh James, coming off a start in which he struck out a career-high 13 batters, will get the start in the finale. He'll take on Caleb Ferguson at 7:05 Pacific.

Corpus Christi 8, San Antonio 2

W- Corbin Martin (3-1, 5-1 season)
L- Jason Jester (2-1)

CC home runs: None.

Corpus busted this game open with a seven-run 7th inning.

Jorge Alcala dominated in his first Texas League start; he had made two relief appearances since his promotion. Alcala allowed just one hit, walked one, and struck out five over five shutout frames; he retired the first 11 men he faced. Corbin Martin pitched the last four innings and allowed two runs on two hits (solo homer) and struck out four.

Alex De Goti walked to lead off the 5th and he eventually scored the first run of the night on a Chas McCormick sac fly. The real fun began in the 7th.

Lorenzo Quintana led things off with a walk and moved to third on a McCormick double. Aníbal Sierra put the Hooks back in front with an RBI single. Myles Straw legged out a bunt single that scored McCormick. The threat was on the verge of ending early when Josh Rojas and Taylor Jones went down, but Randy César came through with a two-run double. Stephen Wrenn took César's place at second after bringing him in with a double, and then De Goti found himself on second after he ripped a double to score Wrenn. Quintana made another trip to the plate and he drove in Corpus Christi's final run of the evening on... you guessed it, a double. César and Quintana both finished 2-3; César singled with two outs in the 4th to extend his hitting streak to 32 games.

Cionel Perez will take the mound for game three. First pitch is at 7:05.

Down East 4, Buies Creek 2

W- Emerson Martinez (4-5)
L- Gabriel Valdez (2-3)
S- Jairo Beras (1)

BC home runs: None.

The Carolina Stros were foiled in their bid to sweep this latest iteration of the Lone Star Series in North Carolina.

Gabriel Valdez went five innings and allowed three runs on five hits (two-run homer), walked one, and struck out four. Colin McKee allowed a run on three hits, walked one, and struck out two in three innings of relief.

Ronnie Dawson ripped an RBI double to open the scoring in the 1st inning. The other scoring play came in the 7th when Jonathan Arauz hit an RBI infield single. Jake Adams (2B) and Osvaldo Duarte (2 2B, R) both finished 2-4 on the day.

Buies Creek will start a three-game series with the Carolina Mudcats. First pitch is at 6:00 Eastern.

Quad Cities 9, Peoria 0

W- Peter Solomon (3-1)
L- Evan Guillory (6-4)

QC home runs: Colton Shaver (7, solo in 1st), Cody Bohanek (4, solo in 9th)

The Banditos dominated the Chiefs in every facet of the game on Sunday.

Peter Solomon shackled the Chiefs for seven innings, allowing three hits, walking one, and striking out seven. Carlos Sanabria allowed a hit, walked one, and struck out one over the last two innings to complete the shutout.

Colton Shaver smacked a solo homer in the 1st to open the scoring. Cody Bohanek kept the 4th inning alive with a single and dashed home on an Alfredo Angarita triple. The Banditos busted this one open with four runs in the 5th.

Shaver walked and Corey Julks singled to lead things off. Shaver scored when Bryan de la Cruz ripped a double. Adrian Tovalin followed with an RBI single, which forced Peoria to make a pitching change. Jonathan Lacroix got plunked to load the bases, but Quad Cities' threat was on the verge of going empty as Mike Papierski popped out on the infield fly rule and Bohanek went down on strikes, but Angarita came through with a two-run double; Lacroix was thrown out at home. Tovalin added a two-run triple to his ledger in the 6th and Bohanek capped off the day with a solo homer to lead off the 9th.

Tovalin finished 3-4 on the afternoon. Shaver, Julks, de la Cruz, Bohanek, and Angarita had two hits apiece.

Jairo Solis will get the start in the series finale and he'll take on Jesús Cruz at noon.

Salt Lake 3, Fresno 2

W- Adam Hofacket (5-0)
L- James Hoyt (0-1)
S- Eduardo Paredes (1)

Fresno home runs: Jon Kemmer (6, solo in 5th)

The Tacos were foiled in their bid to sweep the series as the Bees got a couple of runs in the final two innings to eke out the victory.

Rogelio Armenteros allowed a run on two hits, walked two, and struck out eight in 5.2 innings. Buddy Boshers was the first man out of the Fresno bullpen; he got the last out of the 6th and two outs in the 7th, working around a hit to do so. Brendan McCurry allowed a run on two hits and struck out one in 1.1 innings, and James Hoyt allowed what turned out to be the winning run in the 9th. The run was unearned; Hoyt allowed a couple of hits, walked two, and struck out two.

Jon Kemmer put the Tacos on the board when he led off the 5th with a home run/ Tyler White drove in the other Fresno run with a single in the 7th. He and Kyle Tucker both finished 2-4 on the afternoon.

Josh James will start the first of a four-game series in El Paso. He'll face Chris Huffman at 6:35 Mountain.

Corpus Christi 5, San Antonio 4

W- Cionel Perez (3-1)
L- Rowan Wick (2-2)

CC home runs: None.

The Hooks scored in just one inning, but they erased a 4-0 deficit and snatched a victory from the jaws of defeat in the process. Omar Lopez got tossed just before the 6th inning got underway, presumably over whether Myles Straw got picked off in the 5th. Either that, or he was not pleased with the called third strike on Stephen Wrenn to end the 5th.

Alex Winkelman allowed three runs on five hits (solo homer), walked two, and struck out two in four innings of work. Carlos Sierra pitched the 5th and allowed a solo homer to Fernando Tatis, who homered off Winkelman to start the game. That was the only hit that Sierra allowed in his first inning in AA; he also issued a walk and struck out the side. Cionel Perez shined after tagging in, allowing just one hit and striking out six over four scoreless innings to get the win.

Corpus did nothing of note on offense in the first six innings, so let's move on to the 7th.

Randy César kicked things off by drawing a walk. He moved to second on a Ryne Birk single and scored the Hooks' first run when Lorenzo Quintana ripped a double. Alex De Goti followed with a two-run single to cut the Missions' lead to 4-3. Straw went down for the first out of the inning, but Wrenn kept things going with a single, and the ensuing error allowed him to move to third while De Goti dashed home with the tying run. Carmen Benedetti capped off the rally with an RBI single to put Corpus in front. Straw, De Goti, and Josh Rojas all finished with two hits on the night. Straw and Rojas also stole a base; Straw has expanded his lead on Rojas a bit as he continues to set the pace in the system in terms of stolen bases. He's now up 23-16 on Rojas.

Framber Valdez faces Jerry Keel in game 3 of this series. First pitch is at 7:05.

Buies Creek 3, Winston-Salem 1

W- Abdiel Saldaña (4-0)
L- Peter Lambert (3-3)

BC home runs: None.

Both teams only had one scoring inning apiece, but the Carolina Stros scored more runs in their inning, so they won. I like it when baseball is simple like that.

Buies Creek's three runs all came in the 6th as they strung four straight one-out hits together. Alfredo Angarita and Ronnie Dawson started the chain, and then Abraham Toro brought Angarita home with a single and J.J. Matijevic smacked a double to score Dawson. Toro scored the final run of the evening on a Chas McCormick sac fly. No one on either team finished with a multi-hit game; Angarita also stole a base, his 5th of the season.

Jorge Alcala and Abdiel Saldaña kept the Winston-Salem offense in check, holding the Dash to just four hits in this game. Alcala allowed a run on a groundout, a single, walked two, and struck out eight in five innings. Saldaña allowed three hits, walked one, and struck out four in four innings.

Brandon Bielak takes on Tanner Banks in game 2 of this series. First pitch is at 6:00 Eastern.

Cedar Rapids 6, Quad Cities 5

W- Jovani Moran (1-1)
L- Tanner Duncan (0-1)
S- Carlos Suniaga (1)

QC home runs: Miguelangel Sierra (1, solo in 9th)

The Kernels got runs in the 7th and the 8th to break a 4-4 tie in their favor. Quad Cities got to within one run in the 9th but couldn't get a rally started outside of Miguelangel Sierra's home run.

Jake Meyers doubled to lead off the game and scored the first run of the night on Ruben Castro's groundout. Jonathan Lacroix whacked an RBI double in the 2nd and ended up scoring from there on a wild pitch. Lacroix added an RBI single to his ledger in the 6th. Sierra's home run in the 9th came with two outs and he was the only man to reach base for Quad Cities in the final inning. Sierra and Lacroix both finished with two hits on the night; Lacroix reached in all four of his plate appearances as he also drew a couple of walks.

Yohan Ramirez went 3.2 innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits (two-run homer), walked four, and struck out four. Tanner Duncan tagged in for 3.1 innings and allowed a run on two hits, walked one, and struck out two. Dariel Aquino allowed a solo homer to Jose Miranda in the 8th, which was the only hit he surrendered in the inning. Aquino also issued a walk and struck out two.

The Banditos and Kernels will play a doubleheader on Wednesday as they will make up a game that was originally scheduled for April 8. Cristian Javier will take on Tyler Watson in game 1, which starts at 12:05. Luis Garcia will face Randy Dobnak in the nightcap, which will begin at 6:35.

Let's play two in the Quad Cities!

Tacoma 7, Fresno 3

W- Ariel Miranda (1-0)
L- Mike Hauschild (2-2)
S- Shawn Armstrong (1)

Fresno home runs: A.J. Reed (3, 2-run in 5th)

A three-run 5th inning got the Grizz back into this game, but the Rainiers managed to re-establish their advantage to secure the victory.

Mike Hauschild allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits (solo homer), walked three, and struck out five in five innings of work. Jacob Dorris allowed an unearned run on two hits, walked one, and struck out one in the 6th, and Buddy Boshers pitched the last three innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits (solo homer), walking one, and striking out two.

Tony Kemp singled to lead off the 5th and Tyler White joined him on the bases after drawing a walk. Kemp stole third and scored on an error, and A.J. Reed, who was at the plate, eventually launched a two-run home run. Kemp finished 2-5; the stolen base was his 8th of the season.

Francis Martes will start the fifth and final game of this series. He'll take on Rob Whalen at 12:05 Pacific.

Corpus Christi 6, Frisco 1

W- Chris Nunn (1-0)
L- Brett Martin (0-3)

CC home runs: Randy César (1, 3-run in 6th)

Corpus used a 5-run 6th inning to seize the momentum on Saturday night.

Cionel Perez allowed an unearned run on six hits, walked one, and struck out five in 4.2 innings. Chris Nunn tagged in to throw 4.1 scoreless, allowing one hit, walking one, and striking out three.

Both teams scored a run in the 4th; the Hooks got theirs on a Randy César RBI single. Moving on to the 6th...

Nick Tanielu drew a one-out walk and Carmen Benedetti, who scored Corpus Christi's first run of the evening, followed by hitting a single. César delivered a haymaker with his three-run homer that broke the tie. Ryne Birk was next and he forced a pitching change by ripping a double. He stole third while Lorenzo Quintana was at the plate; Quintana eventually worked a walk and proceeded to steal second. Arturo Michelena hit into a fielder's choice where Birk was thrown out at home, but Myles Straw capped off the offensive assault with a two-run triple.

Birk finished 3-4 with a couple of doubles and a couple of stolen bases (4). César (3-R HR, 4 RBI), Straw (3B, 2 RBI, SB), and Benedetti (2B, 2 R) all had two hits on the night. Straw now has 13 stolen bases on the season, which breaks a tie at the top of the system with Josh Rojas.

Framber Valdez will take on Richelson Peña in game 3 of this series. First pitch is at 2:05.

Buies Creek 9, Frederick 4

W- Abdiel Saldaña (3-0)
L- Ofelky Peralta (1-2)

BC home runs: None.

The Carolina Stros stormed out to an 8-0 lead on the strength of two big early innings.

Chas McCormick singled to lead off the bottom of the 1st and scampered home with the first run of the evening when Josh Rojas smacked a double. Buies Creek opened things up a little with a 4-run 3rd inning, which started when they loaded the bases. Osvaldo Duarte reached on an error that allowed Aníbal Sierra and McCormick to score, while he was able to advance to second and Rojas made it to third. Duarte and Rojas eventually scored on a Kristian Trompiz single. Rojas added an RBI single to his ledger in the 4th and Abraham Toro ripped a two-run double later in the frame. Trompiz capped off the evening when he smacked an RBI triple in the 7th.

Rojas finished 3-4 with two doubles, two RBI, and two runs scored. McCormick (2 R) and Trompiz (3B, 3 RBI) had two hits apiece.

Jorge Alcala and Abdiel Saldaña both pitched four innings with contrasting results. Alcala had a scoreless outing in which he allowed two hits, walked three, and struck out four. On the other hand, Saldaña didn't have his greatest outing as he allowed his first three runs of the season on seven hits. He also issued a couple of walks and struck out one. Jesús Balaguer walked the bases loaded in the 9th but managed to emerge unscathed.

Brandon Bielak will take the mound as Buies Creek looks for a sweep. He'll face Jhon Peluffo at 2:00 Eastern.

Game 1: Cedar Rapids 2, Quad Cities 1

W- Randy Dobnak (2-0)
L- Luis Garcia (0-1)

QC home runs: None.

The Kernels nipped the Banditos in game 1 with a run in the 3rd that broke a 1-1 tie.

Adrian Tovalin went 2-3 and his RBI single in the 1st was Quad Cities' only scoring play in the first game.

Luis Garcia went 5.1 innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits, walked one, and struck out four. Cole Watts allowed a hit, walked one, and struck out one in 1.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

Game 2: Quad Cities 4, Cedar Rapids 1

W- Cristian Javier (1-0)
L- Melvi Acosta (0-1)
S- Carlos Sanabria (2)

QC home runs: Jonathan Arauz (1, 2-run in 5th)

Quad Cities put up a couple of crooked numbers to earn the doubleheader split.

Cristian Javier allowed a run on four hits, walked one, and struck out eight in five innings to get the win while Carlos Sanabria closed it out by striking out three over two perfect innings.

The Banditos got two in the 4th on an RBI double from Corey Julks and an RBI single from Bryan De La Cruz. They got two more in the 5th on Jonathan Arauz's first home run of the season. Julks, who stole a base in game 1, finished 2-3 in game 2.

The Banditos and Kernels will wrap up their series at 1:15 as Parker Mushinski faces Bryan Sammons.

Let's play two in Burlington!

Fresno 7, Reno 2

W- Mike Hauschild (2-1)
L- Taylor Clarke (1-3)

Fresno home runs: None.

The Grizzlies took the opener of their series with the Aces behind a solid night on the mound and when Reno cut their lead to one run, they got some timely offense to secure the victory.

Tony Kemp ripped an RBI double in the 2nd inning to put Fresno on the board first. They scored two more in the 3rd behind a pair of RBI singles from A.J. Reed and Garrett Stubbs. Jon Kemmer led off the 6th with a triple and scored when Kemp beat a double play attempt. The Grizzlies sealed the deal with 3 runs in the 8th inning on RBI singles from Kemp and Drew Ferguson and a sac fly from Kyle Tucker. Kemp finished 3-5 with a stolen base (6), while Stubbs and Ferguson had two hits apiece.

Mike Hauschild went 6 innings and allowed 2 runs on 6 hits (solo homer) and struck out 7. Brendan McCurry allowed 3 hits and fanned 3 over two scoreless innings, and James Hoyt recorded a strikeout in a 1-2-3 9th inning.

Francis Martes takes on Troy Scribner in game 2 of this series. First pitch is at 1:05 Pacific.

Corpus Christi 10, Frisco 3

W- Brendan Feldmann (1-0)
L- Pedro Payano (1-1)
S- Yoanys Quiala (1)

CC home runs: Nick Tanielu (3, 2-run in 1st)

Corpus stormed out to a 7-0 lead after the first two innings and for the most part, had few complications with the Roughriders.

Myles Straw led off the game with a single, stole second, and advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw from Pedro Payano. Yordan Alvarez eventually drew a walk and they both scored when Taylor Jones smacked a double. One batter later, Nick Tanielu launched a home run to put the Hooks up 4-0 out of the gate. Straw singled again in the 2nd inning and scored on an error that allowed Alvarez to reach. Jones followed by ripping another RBI double and Randy César hit an RBI single. Jamie Ritchie ripped a two-run double in the 4th inning and Straw capped off the evening with his fifth hit of the game, an RBI triple in the 9th inning.

Alvarez was the only man in the Corpus lineup who failed to record a hit, but he managed to score twice. Jones, Tanielu, Ryne Birk, Ritchie, and Alex De Goti all turned in two-hit nights.

Akeem Bostick allowed a run on 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 5 in 3.2 innings. Brendan Feldmann was the first man out of the Corpus bullpen and went 1.1 innings, allowing 3 hits, walking 1 and striking out 3. Yoanys Quiala pitched the final 4 innings and allowed 2 runs on 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1.

Alex Winkelman gets the start in game 3. He'll face Brett Martin at 4:05.

Carolina 3, Buies Creek 0

W- Marcos Diplán (1-1)
L- Jorge Alcala (0-3)
S- Chase Williams (3)

BC home runs: None.

The Carolina Stros were shut out and their winning streak came to a close.

Chuckie Robinson had both of Buies Creek's hits.

Jorge Alcala pitched well, but the only decision he could take was the loss. In 5 innings, he allowed a run on 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 6. Kit Scheetz threw 1.2 innings and the two runs he allowed came on a home run hit by former Aggie Ronnie Gideon. Scheetz allowed three other hits, walked one, and struck out four. Ronel Blanco struck out two over 1.1 perfect innings.

Abdiel Saldaña will take on La Grange's Trey Supak in the series finale. First pitch is at 2:00 Eastern.

Game 1: Burlington 5, Quad Cities 3

W- James Ziemba (1-0)
L- Tyler Ivey (0-2)
S- Austin Krzeminski (1)

QC home runs: None.

The Banditos scored in more innings... but the Bees scored more in their one inning as they took game 1.

J.J. Matijevic doubled in the 1st and eventually scored the first run of game 1 when he stole home as part of a double steal with Jonathan Arauz. Roman Garcia reached on an error to lead off the 2nd and scored on a sac fly from Jake Meyers. Garcia hit an RBI single in the 3rd. Matijevic and Gabriel Bracamonte had two hits apiece.

Tyler Ivey cruised through four innings before the wheels fell off for him in the 5th. He threw 4+ innings and allowed 5 runs (3 inherited runners charged to him) on 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 5. Colin McKee took ownership of the 5th and although he technically threw a scoreless inning in which he struck out the side, he also allowed a bases-clearing double that resulted in three runs being charged to Ivey. Tanner Duncan got a couple of groundouts and a flyout in a scoreless 6th.

Game 2: Quad Cities 5, Burlington 4

W- Adam Bleday (1-1)
L- Jorge Tavarez (1-1)
S- Dariel Aquino (1)

QC home runs: Jake Meyers (1, 2-run in 5th)

Quad Cities erased a 4-0 deficit to earn the split.

Jake Meyers put the Banditos on the board in game 2 with a two-run blast in the 5th inning. All three of their runs in the 7th came with two outs. Meyers singled in between those two outs and scored on a Corey Julks triple. Julks scored the tying run on a single from Jake Adams, who rumbled home with the go-ahead run on a double from Jonathan Arauz. Meyers finished 3-3, while Julks had two hits in game 2.

Peter Solomon went 2.1 innings and allowed 4 runs on 4 hits (solo homer), walked 4, and struck out 4. Adam Bleday restored order with 3.2 scoreless, allowing a hit, walking 2, and striking out 7. Dariel Aquino worked around a walk to close out the game, striking out 1.

Quad Cities and Burlington will play another doubleheader today, with Cristian Javier taking the mound at 2:00 for game 1. Yohan Ramirez will take on Mitchell Traver in game 2.

Fresno sweep!

Fresno 7, Reno 6

W- Mike Hauschild (1-1)
L- Taylor Clarke (1-2)
S- Brendan McCurry (2)

Fresno home runs: Tyler White (4, solo in 1st)

Well, things got rather harrowing in the 9th, but the Grizzlies managed to escape, and as a result, they swept the Aces out of the Central Valley.

Mike Hauschild was dealing in his 6.2 innings as he allowed a run on 5 hits while striking out 8. Matt Ramsey got the final out of the 7th with a strikeout and then threw a 1-2-3 8th with a groundout sandwiched in between a couple more strikeouts. Chris Nunn faced three men in the 9th and failed to record an out; instead, he allowed 3 runs on three hits (solo and 2-run homers). Brendan McCurry took ownership of the 9th and managed to close out the game, even though he allowed a two-run homer to Marcus Littlewood that cut Fresno's lead to one run. The homer was the only hit he allowed; he also walked the first man he faced.

Tyler White smacked a solo homer in the 1st to open the scoring. All four of his home runs this season have come against the Aces. The Grizzlies got a pair of two-run singles from J.D. Davis and Tim Federowicz in the 3rd to put them in the driver's seat. In the 8th, Federowicz lashed an RBI double and Drew Ferguson drove in the last Fresno run of the afternoon with an RBI single.

Federowicz finished 3-4 and drove in three. Ferguson (RBI, R) and Davis (2B, 2 RBI, 2 R) had two hits apiece; Ferguson is now on a nine-game hitting streak and has recorded a hit in all but one of the games he has played this season.

Trent Thornton will get the start as the Grizzlies start a four-game series in Las Vegas. He'll face A.J. Griffin at 7:05 Pacific.

Corpus Christi 9, Arkansas 0

W- Ralph Garza Jr. (3-0)
L- Spencer Herrmann (1-1)

CC home runs: Nick Tanielu (1, 2-run in 1st)

The Hooks dominated the Travelers in all facets of the game. Maybe the presence of the World Series trophy was a little extra motivation?

Cionel Perez and Ralph Garza Jr. both threw 4 scoreless innings. Cionel allowed 3 hits, walked 3, and struck out 6, while Garza allowed a couple of hits and also fanned 6. Erasmo Pinales got two flyouts and a groundball out in the 9th to complete the shutout.

Nick Tanielu kicked things off by launching a two-run homer in the opening inning, his first of the year. Corpus blew this game open by turning a bases-loaded, no out situation in the 3rd into five runs.

After Arkansas starter Spencer Herrmann loaded the bases, the Travs went to their bullpen. Carmen Benedetti greeted the new pitcher, Scott Kuzminsky, with a two-run double. Randy César reached on an error to re-load the bases, and Ryne Birk followed with an RBI single. Lorenzo Quintana grounded into a force out that allowed Benedetti to score, and César scored on an Alex De Goti groundout. Benedetti ripped an RBI double in the 6th and César capped off the evening with an RBI single in the 8th.

Myles Straw went 4-5 with a triple. Yordan Alvarez (2B, 3 R), Benedetti (2 2B, 3 RBI, R), and César (RBI, R) all turned in two-hit games. De Goti was the only player in the lineup to not record a hit, but he still played a role in that big third inning with his RBI groundout.

Josh James will get the start as the Hooks look for the sweep and he'll be opposed by Chase De Jong. First pitch is at 7:05.

Buies Creek 3, Myrtle Beach 0

W- Abdiel Saldaña (2-0)
L- Matt Swarmer (0-2)
S- Jorge Alcala (1)

BC home runs: None.

Make it three straight shutouts for the Carolina Stros.

Abdiel Saldaña and Jorge Alcala kept Myrtle Beach off the hit column for 7.1 innings. Saldaña walked two and struck out two over 5 innings, while Alcala allowed the one hit and fanned 7 over the last four innings to complete the shutout.

Ronnie Dawson doubled to lead off the bottom of the 1st and scored the first run of the evening on a Josh Rojas double. Dawson walked with one out in the 8th and eventually scored on an Abraham Toro double. Toro scored the final run of the evening on a Chas McCormick single.

Dawson (2B, 2 R, SB [2]) and Toro (2B, RBI, R) both finished with two hits on the night.

Hector Perez will start game 2 of this series. He'll face Keegan Thompson at 7:00 Eastern.

Quad Cities was off

Hopefully, they'll get to play baseball again. The River Bandits will begin a three-game series in Peoria tonight at 6:35. Cristian Javier will take on Winston Nicacio.
