Weighing in on the Carlos Gomez Trade

I'll be honest. I wasn't very happy when I saw this late this afternoon.

I have nothing against Carlos Gomez. And I'd never even heard of Mike Fiers until a couple of hours ago. I want the Astros to be better and if this trade helps them get better, I'm all for it. But let me tell you a little about the players we're losing.

I love Adrian Houser. He's a competitor. I did my first interview with him when he was only 18. The first time I watched him pitch, he was just a kid about 30 pounds lighter than he is now, but showed great rhythm and athleticism on the mound. He was fun to watch. And then I saw him grow and develop and find his command. Each time I saw him, he had matured as a man and as a pitcher.

Domingo Santana was the opposite, physically at least. He was HUGE the first time I saw him at High A in 2012, the year after the trade, but he was what I called a little "doughy." By the time he got to Corpus Christi the next season, he had transformed himself. He was nothing but muscle and incredibly strong at the plate. And he had also started to transform himself defensively. I'll admit that I occasionally cringed when I saw him in right field. But he worked hard and started to learn what routes to take to balls and how to play smarter in the outfield. In late May in Fresno, there was a constant chatter going in Spanish between he and Carlos Correa on either side of the batting cage. I have no idea what they were talking about, but they were having a whole lot of fun together.

Josh Hader is just a good kid who likes sweet tea and country music ... until he gets on the mound. Then he's as hard-nosed and competitive a pitcher as you will ever see. He once told me that he wanted to "assassinate" the hitter. A little hyperbole, sure, but to see him go from laidback country guy to a ninja assassin with a deceptive delivery was quite entertaining.

I did like and do like all three of those players very much, but I will honestly tell you that I think they will all have a clearer path to the majors with another organization. If you haven't noticed, things are getting a little crowded at the top. There are a lot of moving parts as the Astros are having to get more and more and more creative with the 40-man roster. Houser would likely be lost in the Rule 5 draft this coming year if not protected, and Santana would not make it through waivers if he was removed from the 40-man roster. It makes sense to get something for those players now rather than losing them for nothing later.

However, I had three players in the minor league system that were, to me, untouchables. I won't reveal the other two because I don't want Jeff Luhnow to get any more ideas and further break my heart. But Brett Phillips was at the top of that list of three players.

Brett Phillips is a phenomenal talent. Quick twitch athleticism, speed, a canon arm, the ability to hit for average and for power. I see Phillips as becoming a legit 5-tool player in the major leagues and I think he will make his debut by the end of 2016 if not sooner. And I'm not the only one. MLB Pipeline had Phillips as the number 2 prospect in the Astros system. More than that, though, is Phillips' special ability to connect with everyone and to lead a team. He is going to become a very special player, one that can become the heart and soul of a team. And, yes, I am very sad to see him go. This one is going to hurt. It already does. As one person said, in a trade you have to give up good players, but you should make sure you keep the ones that can be great.

Getting to Know JetHawks LHP Josh Hader

I'm not sure what I expected when I talked to Lancaster JetHawks LHP Josh Hader recently, but it wasn't what I got. The 20-year old lefty is a study in contrasts. He is as easygoing and laid back off the mound as he is fiercely competitive on it.

Josh Hader - May 2014

I first spoke with Lancaster Pitching Coach Don Alexander about Hader to get his take, "He's still a pup, but on the mound, he's extremely mature. Excellent mound presence. Competes very, very well and he's got filthy stuff ... the slot that he throws from plus an above average fastball with life and movement. The big thing with him right now is the secondary package and getting consistent with the slider and the change up." Alexander started to say that Hader was holding his own at the level, but corrected himself, "He's competing extremely well at this level right now."

And that is a fact. In 13 appearances (eight starts), Hader is 5-0 with a 2.31 ERA (second in the league) and a 1.086 WHIP (third in the league). He has 72 strikeouts to 21 walks in 58+ innings of work. Plus he pitched the first six innings of a combined no-hitter last month. And he just turned 20 in April.

Hader is a young man of few words and most of those words came out in a slow, Maryland drawl. The first question I asked him was about his pitch repertoire. He responded, "I throw a two-seam probably around 87 to 93, a slider that's probably about 73, 76 maybe and a change up." His out pitch depends somewhat on the batter, but he will generally go to the slider.

In asking what he's accomplished so far this season, he said, "I feel like I accomplished a lot. I came into the season, working on my change up a lot. It's [developed] into a good pitch for me, getting in the zone and also getting outs and swing and misses with it. That's one of my big accomplishments."

How does the Orioles system (from which he was acquired in the Bud Norris trade) compare to the Astros system? Hader answered, "They're kind of the same. They go about their business a little bit differently. Like the piggyback here, that's a little different from the Orioles." But in the end, it's basically the same thing as both organizations are focused on developing players.

His responses to many of my questions were short and to the point. Who has a pitch he would like to steal? "Vince Velasquez' change up. I wouldn't mind stealing that." Who would he least like to face in the batter's box? "I'd say Carlos [Correa] or Teo [Teoscar Hernandez]." Who on the team makes you laugh? "I'd have to say Tony [Kemp] or Tyson [Perez (since promoted to Corpus)]."

In asking what he'd do if he couldn't play baseball, "Not really sure. Never really thought about that. Probably go into sports medicine or something like that. Stay in sports at least." In response to a query as to what people might not know about him, "I think a lot of people know it, but I like Country [music] and sweet tea. If you didn't know that, now you do."

The one question I posed to him which drew a more animated response was in asking what he thinks he brings to the mound, "I compete a lot when I get on the mound. I'm not going up there to be anybody's friend. I'm straight murdering them, basically. Not really, but figuratively. Not letting anything get to me or anything like that."

Drawling about sweet tea and then punctuating the conversation with a statement as to his murderous intent on the mound ... like I said, a study in contrasts. Personally, I'm glad that I only have to face Josh the person and not Josh the pitcher.

Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Friday, May 30, 2014

Oklahoma City 2, Omaha 1

W- Alex White (1-0)
L- Buddy Baumann (1-1)

OKC home runs: None.

The RedHawks avoided the sweep in dramatic fashion as they scored a pair in the 9th and executed the ol' walk-off squeeze play.

Mike Foltynewicz was just excellent in this one. He pitched 7.2 innings and allowed a run on 6 hits and struck out 10. Both of his double-digit strikeout outings this season have come against the Storm Chasers. Josh Zeid only faced one batter; he struck out Paulo Orlando to end the 8th. Alex White worked around a 2-out infield single to throw a scoreless 9th, striking out 1 in the inning.

Well, it took them the entire game, but better late than never. The RedHawks had a chance to take control earlier, but they left the bases loaded in the 7th and the 8th. 4 batters appeared in the 9th, and all 4 of them reached. Kiké Hernandez kicked off the rally by walking, and then he advanced to 2nd on a Gregorio Petit single. Hernandez would score the tying run as Matt Duffy reached on an error. Petit moved up to 3rd on the play. One batter later, Carlos Perez laid down an exquisite bunt and Petit made an "unreal" slide home for the winning run. The bunt was scored as a sacrifice and Perez received credit for the only OKC RBI. He was also the owner of the lone RedHawks extra-base hit when he doubled with 1 out in the 6th.

Memphis is in town for 4. In game 1, Jake Buchanan will face Zach Petrick. First pitch is at 7:05.

Corpus Christi 7, Northwest Arkansas 2

W- Mike Hauschild (1-0, 3-1 season)
L- J.C. Sulbaran (2-4)

CC home runs: Telvin Nash (3, solo in 6th)

The Hooks took the opener as they were able to get themselves out of the offensive rut that they were in during the last 2 games of the Arkansas series. The Naturals briefly tied the game at 2 after they scored a pair in the top of the 3rd, but Corpus ran off 5 unanswered to get the W.

Leo Heras put Corpus on the board first in the 2nd with an RBI triple. He would score on a Tyler Heineman groundout. Nolan Fontana led off the bottom of the 3rd with a ground-rule double and scored on a Jonathan Meyer fielder's choice to put the Hooks up for good. Telvin Nash finished a triple shy of the cycle (in 3 at-bats); he swatted a solo homer (3) in the 6th and scored twice. He was plunked in his final plate appearance of the evening, in the 8th inning. Before he was hit, Heineman led off the inning with a double and scored when Delino DeShields laid down a sac bunt and an error was committed on the play. Meyer brought Nash home with a pop-fly RBI single, and DeShields scored the final run of the night on another error that allowed Preston Tucker to reach, and loaded the bases. Tucker, who finished 2-5 with a double, was credited with an RBI on the play.

Mike Hauschild finally got his 1st win at the AA level after 2 really good starts and a decent one. He pitched 5 innings and allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2. In his AA debut, Tyson Perez fired 3 scoreless and allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2. Pat Urckfitz struck out 1 in a 1-2-3 9th to wrap it up.

In the middle game of this series, Luis Cruz and Jordan Jankowski will take on Sam Selman at 7:10.

Lancaster 9, Rancho Cucamonga 1

W- Josh Hader (5-0)
L- Geoff Brown (1-3)

Lancaster home runs: Roberto Peña (3, 2-run in 2nd)

Rancho got on the board in the 6th to make it a 2-1 game, but the JetHawks took off in the 7th with a touchdown to run away with the opener and their 7th straight victory. Also, Josh Hader continued his fine season.

Hader went 7.2 and the only ding on his line was a solo homer to James Baldwin, which constituted the entire Rancho offense. He allowed 3 other hits, walked 1, and struck out 9. J.D. Osborne retired all 4 Quakes hitters he faced, striking out 3 of them.

Before the JetHawks' assault in the 7th, their 2 runs came in the form of a Roberto Peña (3) 2-run homer in the 2nd. A couple of triples from Ruben Sosa and Jordan Scott signaled the beginning of the end for the Quakes. Tony Kemp then ripped an RBI double. Teoscar Hernandez walked, and then Carlos Correa hit a 2-run single. Rio Ruiz continued the assault with an RBI double, and after Peña went down for the 2nd out, Conrad Gregor drew a walk. Dan Gulbransen capped it off with a 2-run triple. Rio finished 3-4, while Correa was 2-5 with a steal (13). Sosa also had a double to go along with his triple, which served as the catalyst for the big inning, and Peña also ripped a double to go along with his blast.

Game 2 of the series has Mark Appel making his return to the Lancaster rotation. He'll take on the young phenom, Julio Urias, at 6:00 Pacific.

Quad Cities 7, Beloit 3

W- Edison Frias (2-3)
L- Lou Trivino (3-4)

QC home runs: Ronnie Mitchell (7, grand slam in 1st)

The River Bandits swept the Snappers out of the Quad Cities as they raced out to a 7-0 lead after 4 innings, powered by Mitchell's slam in the 1st.

Chase McDonald opened the scoring in the 1st with an RBI single. Later on in the inning, Mitchell homered for the 4th straight game. The grand slam (7) extended his hitting streak and his RBI streak to 5 games. The last time he hit a grand slam was in Little League. Tyler White went 2-3 with a couple of doubles; one of them brought home Brian Holberton in the 3rd. Chan-Jong Moon added an RBI double in the 4th. Holberton and Jon Kemmer also had 2-hit nights.

Edison Frias went 5 innings and allowed 3 runs on 7 hits and struck out 7. Chris Cotton allowed a hit, walked 2, and struck out 2. Tyler Brunnemann finished it off by retiring all 5 Snappers he faced, striking out 3 of them.

QC will now begin a 3-game series in Wisconsin; Evan Grills will start the opener against Zach Quintana at 6:35.

YES SIR

Oklahoma City 10, Memphis 4

W- Mike Foltynewicz (4-3)
L- Zach Petrick (2-2)

OKC home runs: Domingo Santana 2 (9; solo in 2nd, 2-run in 3rd), Adron Chambers (2, solo in 2nd)

This game was actually made final with 2 outs in the top of the 9th as the rain rolled in.

The RedHawks took the 2nd game in this 4-game set on the strength of 2 Domingo Santana homers. No comeback in the cards for Memphis, as the bullpen stabilized itself. OKC was up by as much as 10-2 in the 8th.

Santana put OKC on the board with a solo homer in the 2nd. Adron Chambers followed with a solo shot of his own to put the RedHawks in the lead, which turned out to be for good. Santana added a 2-run shot in the 3rd, and then Ronald Torreyes hit an RBI single in the 4th. Carlos Perez went 3-3 with 2 doubles; his 2nd double of the evening cleared the bases in the 7th, and he would come around to score on a Robbie Grossman double. Chambers brought home the RedHawks' final run of the evening on a sac fly in the 8th. Austin Wates finished 3-5 with a double and 3 runs scored. Torreyes, Santana, and Kiké Hernandez had 2 hits apiece; Hernandez is now on a 10-game hitting streak.

Mike Foltynewicz pitched 6 innings and allowed 2 runs on 4 hits, walked 4, and struck out 2. Chia-Jen Lo allowed 2 runs on 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 1 in 1.1 innings, and Rhiner Cruz got the final 2 outs of the 8th.

Jake Buchanan will face Scott McGregor in game 3 of this series. First pitch is at 6:05.

Corpus Christi 7, Northwest Arkansas 4

W- Troy Scribner (2-0)
L- Cody Fassold (1-1)
S- Andrew Robinson (2)

CC home runs: Preston Tucker (11, solo in 4th)

The Hooks took the opener with a 4-run 8th which gave them a 6-3 lead. The big hit in that frame belonged to Tyler Heineman, who cleared the bases with a triple. He would score on an RBI bunt single from Delino DeShields. Joe Sclafani added an RBI single in the 9th.

Before they closed the game on a 5-1 run, the Hooks' 2 runs came back in the 4th inning. Preston Tucker put the Hooks on the board with his 11th homer of the season, a solo shot that tied the game at 1. Telvin Nash followed that up with an RBI single to give Corpus the lead. They, along with DeShields, had 2-hit nights; Tucker also added a steal (3) and scored twice. Nolan Fontana went 1-3 with a run scored and 2 walks; he's now on a 7-game hitting streak.

Mike Hauschild went 5 innings and gave up 3 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits (solo homer) and struck out 6. Travis Ballew walked 2 in the 6th, but still posted a scoreless inning. Troy Scribner got dinged by a solo homer from Orlando Calixte in the 8th. That turned out to be the only hit he would allow in his 1.2 innings; he walked 1 and struck out 2. Andrew Robinson finished it off by retiring all 4 Naturals he faced, striking out 1.

In the middle game of this series, Luis Cruz will take on J.C. Sulbaran at 6:05.

Lancaster 6, Inland Empire 2

W- Josh Hader (4-0)
L- Yeiper Castillo (0-1, 3-4 season)
S- Chris Devenski (3)

Lancaster home runs: None.

The JetHawks soared out of the gate, leading 5-0 after the 2nd. They also got solid performances on the mound from Josh Hader and Chris Devenski as they got even in the series.

Hader had another nice outing as he went 5 innings and allowed 2 runs on 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 6. Devenski brought it home with 4 scoreless; he allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and fanned 3.

Carlos Correa opened the scoring with an RBI groundout in the 1st. The JetHawks loaded the bases with 3 straight singles to open the 2nd, then got 4 runs from a Tony Kemp walk, a couple of sac flies from Teoscar Hernandez and Rio Ruiz, and an error that allowed Kemp to score. Kemp, who went 0-1 with 2 runs scored and 4 walks, drew another bases-loaded walk in the 5th. Carlos Perdomo, Jordan Scott, and Ruben Sosa all had 2 hits apiece. Correa's double represented the only JetHawks extra-base hit.

Game 3 of this series features Zach Morton on the mound. He'll face Mark Sappington at 2:00 Pacific.

Quad Cities 5, Cedar Rapids 2

W- Jandel Gustave (4-2)
L- Ethan Mildren (0-3)
S- Andrew Walter (4)

QC home runs: Conrad Gregor (1, 3-run in 6th), Tyler White (2, solo in 6th)

A 4-run 6th was the difference as the Bandits completed the series sweep. They are now above .500 for the first time since a 3-2 win over West Michigan on April 16 gave them a 6-5 record.

James Ramsay led off the bottom of the 1st by drawing a walk, advanced to 3rd when a pickoff throw went awry, and scored the first run of the game on a passed ball. Down 2-1 entering the bottom of the 6th, Conrad Gregor put QC in the driver's seat with his first blast of the season. The 3-run homer put the River Bandits up 4-2, and Tyler White followed that up by going back-to-back with a solo shot.

Jandel Gustave was solid in his 6.2 innings; he allowed 2 runs on 7 hits, walked 2, and struck out 8 on the way to getting the win in his 3rd consecutive appearance. Andrew Walter closed it out with 2.1 scoreless, allowing a hit and striking out 1.

The River Bandits are in Burlington for 3 beginning today at 2:00. Evan Grills will start the opener against Harrison Cooney.

Results for Sunday, May 18, 2014

Nashville 2, Oklahoma City 1

W- Jimmy Nelson (5-1)
L- Mike Foltynewicz (3-3)
S- Donovan Hand (8)

OKC home runs: None.

Both teams had 4 hits, but Nashville had one more in the column that counts. Domingo Santana's RBI groundout in the 6th represented the lone RedHawks run. Kiké Hernandez went 2-3 with a double.

Mike Foltynewicz pitched solidly, even though he got saddled with the loss. He went 6 innings and allowed 2 runs on 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 7. Jason Stoffel threw 2 scoreless and allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1.

The RedHawks will now begin the 2nd leg of this long roadtrip: 4 games in New Orleans. Brett Oberholtzer gets the start in the opener against TBA. First pitch is at 7:00.

Midland 8, Corpus Christi 2

W- Ryan Doolittle (2-2)
L- Travis Ballew (0-1)

CC home runs: Preston Tucker (9, solo in 2nd), Telvin Nash (4, solo in 6th)

Yep, the wheels fell off for Corpus in the 8th as Midland scored a touchdown in the inning.

The blasts from Tucker and Nash represented the Hooks' 2 runs. Tucker has homered in 3 straight. Andrew Aplin was the only player in the starting 9+1 with a multi-hit day as he went 2-4. Joe Sclafani's 6-game multi-hit streak is over, but his overall hitting streak was extended to 8 games.

Mike Hauschild dazzled yet again; he went 7 innings and gave up a run on 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 8. Travis Ballew and Jorge De Leon both struggled. Let's.... let's just leave it at that.

In the series finale, Luis Cruz will face Chris Jensen at 7:10.

Rancho Cucamonga 9, Lancaster 8 in 10 innings

W- Rob Rogers (2-1)
L- Tyson Perez (0-3)

Lancaster home runs: Teoscar Hernandez (6, 3-run in 5th)

The JetHawks erased a 7-1 deficit by scoring 7 unanswered to take the lead, only to see Rancho walk off with the win.

Teoscar Hernandez, who was in the leadoff spot for the 1st time this season, opened up the scoring by coming home on a balk from Tom Windle in the 1st. He then sparked the comeback with his 3-run shot in the 5th. Carlos Perdomo finished 2-4 with an RBI single in the 7th.

Rio Ruiz kicked things off in the 8th with a double and scored on a single from Danry Vásquez. He took 2nd on the throw home, advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch, and scored on Jordan Scott's double. Scott reached in all 4 of his plate appearances (3 hits and a HBP) and had a 3-hit game for the 2nd day in a row. Jobduan Morales, who was at bat when Vásquez went to 3rd on a wild pitch, ended up walking. He moved to 3rd on Scott's double and scored the go-ahead run on another wild pitch. Morales went 0-4 in his Lancaster debut, but scored twice.

Chris Devenski went 3 innings and allowed 5 runs on 5 hits (3-run homer) walked 1, and struck out 5. Juan Minaya got dinged by a 2-run homer by Corey Seager in the 4th. He allowed 1 other hit and struck out 1 in 2 innings. Josh Hader tagged in and was excellent once again. He allowed a run on 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 9 in 4 innings of work. Tyson Perez did not retire either of the 2 hitters he faced (2 hits) in the 10th and was charged with the winning run for the Quakes, which was unearned.

Zach Morton will make his JetHawks debut in the series finale. He'll take on Fabio Martinez at 7:05 Pacific.

Quad Cities 10, Kane County 3

W- Jandel Gustave (3-2)
L- Daury Torrez (4-2)

QC home runs: Brian Holberton (3, 2-run in 4th)

One day after getting no-hit, the River Bandits got the split as they led by as much as 10-1 and pounded out 17 hits. Everyone had one except for Tanner Mathis.

Brian Holberton was dominant at the plate, as he became the first Quad Cities player to hit for the cycle since April 19, 2005, when Brandon Yarbrough did it. At that time, the franchise was known as the Swing of the Quad Cities. Yarbrough's cycle also occurred in Kane County, so I thought that was interesting.

Holberton, who ultimately finished 5-5 with 5 RBI, doubled in the 2nd, smacked a 2-run homer in the 4th, added an RBI single in the 5th, and completed the cycle with a 2-run triple in the 7th. He topped it off with another single in the 9th inning.

The 2 River Bandits runs that weren't batted in came in the 4th. Brett Booth was credited with a bunt single, but 2 errors on the play allowed both Jack Mayfield and Conrad Gregor to score. Mayfield and Gregor both finished 3-5 with an RBI and 3 runs scored. Gregor's RBI came on a single in the 5th, while Mayfield's was a groundout in the 1st that put the first run of the day on the board. After Holberton finished his cycle in the 7th inning, he scored on a Tyler White sac fly.

Jandel Gustave went 5 innings and allowed a run on 3 hits. Michael Feliz tagged in for 3.1 innings, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits (solo homer) while striking out 2. Albert Minnis got the final 2 outs of the game.

The Banditos will head home to kick off a 3-game set with Burlington. Edison Frias will start the opener against Elliot Morris. First pitch is at 7:00.

Swept. Ugh.

Nashville 6, Oklahoma City 3

W- Brad Mills (2-0)
L- Ross Seaton (0-1 with OKC, 0-2 season)
S- Rob Wooten (4)

OKC home runs: Domingo Santana (2, 2-run in 4th)

Since taking the opener, the RedHawks have dropped the next 2. They outhit the Sounds 12-9 but got doubled up in the column that counts.

Their scoring was contained to 1 inning: the 4th. Gregorio Petit doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a Max Stassi sac fly. Jon Singleton singled in between those two plays and came home on a 2-run homer from Domingo Santana (2). Domingo finished 3-4 and is now hitting .293. Petit and Singleton had 2 hits apiece.

Ross Seaton, in his 1st AAA appearance of the season, went 3.1 innings and gave up 5 runs (4 earned) on 3 hits (all homers), walked 4, and struck out 1. Rhiner Cruz pitched 1.2 and allowed a run on 3 hits and struck out 1. Nick Tropeano finished with 4 scoreless, allowing 3 hits and walking 1.

The RedHawks will look for the split as the team of Bobby Doran and David Martinez take the mound to take on Jimmy Nelson. First pitch is at 2:05.

Frisco 3, Corpus Christi 2

W- Luke Jackson (3-0)
L- Brady Rodgers (1-2)
S- Matt West (3)

CC home runs: None.

Frisco got ahead with a pair in the 5th and tacked on another in the 6th as they drew even in the 4-game set.

Brady Rodgers pitched 5.2 innings and allowed 3 runs on 7 hits (solo homer), walked 1, and struck out 5. Alex Sogard allowed a hit and struck out 2 over 2.1 scoreless, and Travis Ballew tossed a 1-2-3 9th.

Joe Sclafani put the Hooks on the board first in the 2nd with an RBI single. Chris Epps hit an RBI double in the 8th. Leo Heras went 2-3 with a double, a walk, a steal (4), and a run scored; he scored on Sclafani's single. Heras seems to be getting himself going after a really slow start; he's now on a 5-game hitting streak. Rene Garcia got plunked in the 5th, and Hooks skipper Keith Bodie got really hot about that. He also made his displeasure of the umpiring known at a few points during the evening. Well, after a, um... spirited discussion, Bodie ended up getting tossed.

Game 3 will be the Hooks' penultimate Sunday day game. Aaron West and Kyle Lotzkar will be today's matchup. First pitch is at 1:10.

Rancho Cucamonga 3, Lancaster 0

W- Lindsey Caughel (1-2)
L- Chris Devenski (1-3)
S- Brian Smith (1)

Lancaster home runs: None.

The Jethawks had some opportunities to get on the board, so it wasn't like they were getting dominated on the offensive end. They had runners on the corners with 1 out in the 2nd, but Bobby Borchering was nailed at home attempting to turn Danry Vasquez's flyout into a sac fly. Vasquez's 1-out double was spoiled in the 5th, Carlos Perdomo was left at 2nd base in the 7th, and they left 2 runners in scoring position in the 8th. Perdomo, who went 3-4, was left at 2nd when Jake Rodriguez struck out looking to end the game.

Chris Devenski went 5 innings and allowed 3 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4. Josh Hader finished with 3 perfect innings, striking out 6.

In the series finale, Mike Hauschild will take on Tom Windle at 2:05 Pacific.

Peoria 3, Quad Cities 2

W- Joe Scanio (2-1)
L- Michael Feliz (1-1)
S- Kyle Barraclough (1)

QC home runs: None.

All the scoring was done in the first third of the game, with the Chiefs pulling ahead with 2 in the 3rd.

The River Bandits had some legit chances to put up some more runs in the first 3 innings; Chan-Jong Moon opened the scoring by dinking a single to score Brett Phillips, advanced station-to-station, and was left at 3rd base to end the 1st. After Tyler White singled to lead off the 2nd, he advanced to 3rd on a Jon Kemmer double and scored on a wild pitch. Kemmer wound up being left at 3rd. The River Bandits left the bases loaded in the 3rd when James Ramsay lined out to end the inning.

Brett Phillips tripled to lead off the game and scored on Moon's single. He now has a 5-game hitting streak.

Michael Feliz went 3 innings and allowed 3 runs on 4 hits, walked 4, and struck out 3. Zach Morton came out first and threw 2 scoreless, allowing a hit, walking 1, and striking out 1. Evan Grills allowed 2 hits and walked 1 over 2 scoreless, and Pat Christensen threw a 1-2-3 8th, striking out 1.

QC will look to avoid the sweep as Gonzalo Sañudo and Adrian Houser face off against Chase Brookshire at 2.

Sweep!

Oklahoma City 8, Memphis 3

W- David Martinez (3-2)
L- Scott McGregor (0-3)

OKC home runs: Jon Singleton (8, solo in 3rd), Jonathan Meyer (1, solo in 3rd)

The RedHawks earned the split as they jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first third of the game, then added 3 more in the 7th to secure the victory.

David Martinez went 5 innings and allowed a run on 3 hits and walked 1. Bobby Doran tagged in for 3 innings and gave up 2 runs (both in the 8th) on 4 hits and walked 1, and Rhiner Cruz worked around a pair of 2-out hits to finish it off, striking out the side in the 9th. All 3 OKC strikeouts belonged to Cruz.

Robbie Grossman began the game with a walk and opened the scoring when he came home on a Domingo Santana single. Ronald Torreyes added an RBI single in the 2nd, and then Singleton and Meyer both hit solo blasts in the 3rd. Kiké Hernandez added to the lead in the 7th when he hit a 2-run double, and Singleton chipped in once again with a sac fly. Meyer, who finished 2-4, scored OKC's final run as he scored on a wild pitck from Nick Greenwood/Erik Castro walk in the 8th. Grossman reached safely in all 5 of his plate appearances, going 2-2 with 2 runs scored and 3 walks.

After getting today off, the RedHawks will welcome Nashville to Bricktown for a 4-game series beginning Thursday. Mike Foltynewicz and Rudy Owens are scheduled to be Thursday's pairing; they'll take on Ariel Peña at 7:05.

Corpus Christi 6, Midland 5 in 12 innings

W- Andrew Robinson (3-0)
L- Conner Crumbliss (0-1); he actually started in RF in this game.

CC home runs: Chris Epps (1, grand slam in 2nd)

The Hooks found themselves in a 5-0 hole as the RockHounds jumped on Aaron West in the first 2 innings. They responded by landing a haymaker in the 2nd in the form of Chris Epps' grand slam, and Andrew Aplin tied the game with an RBI single in the 4th. 15 zeros on the board later, Nolan Fontana finally put up a 1 in the bottom of the 12th with his 4th hit of the evening, a single to bring home Jio Mier. Aplin, Matt Duffy, and Mier all had 2 hits; Fontana finished 4-7.

West went 3.1 innings and allowed 5 runs on 6 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2. The bullpen proceeded to throw 8.2 scoreless to pick him up. Alex Sogard was first up, and he allowed 2 hits and walked 1 in 2.2. The next 3 relievers threw 2 innings apiece: Jordan Jankowski allowed a hit while striking out 3. Travis Ballew allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1. And finally, Andrew Robinson allowed 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3.

Luis Cruz and Ross Seaton will take on Andrew Werner in game 3 at 7:10.

Lancaster 5, Inland Empire 1

W- Josh Hader (1-0)
L- Alex Keudell (0-3)

Lancaster home runs: Teoscar Hernandez (2, 2-run in 1st)

The JetHawks took off with 4 in the 1st... and they were never seriously threatened in this one as they won rather handily, leading 5-0 after 2 innings and holding the 66ers to 3 hits.

Tony Kemp led off with a single, and then Teoscar Hernandez opened things up with his 2-run homer. The blast extended Hernandez's hitting streak to 8 games. After Carlos Correa lined out, Rio Ruiz got on board with a single, then scored on a Brandon Meredith double. Meredith came around to score on Danry Vasquez's single. Jordan Scott led off the 2nd with a double, advanced to 3rd on a Kemp flyout, and scored on a wild pitch. Kemp, Correa, and Ruiz each had 2 hits; Correa now has 3 straight multi-hit outings.

Coming off his worst outing of the season, Josh Hader bounced back impressively. He went 5 innings and allowed a run on just 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 7. Chris Devenski allowed a hit and struck out 2 over 3 scoreless frames, and Jamaine Cotton struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 9th.

Mark Appel, after a period of extended rest, will make his return to the JetHawks rotation. He and Mike Hauschild will face Tyler DeLoach at 7:05 Pacific.

Quad Cities 11, Clinton 2

W- Pat Christensen (1-1)
L- Eddie Campbell (1-1)

QC home runs: Thomas Lindauer 2 (2, 2-run in 3rd, 2-run in 4th)

Well, that was quick. In his 2nd game of the season, QC native Thomas Lindauer became the new clubhouse leader in home runs as he belted a couple of 2-run shots off of Clinton starter Eddie Campbell and added an RBI single in the 8th. In fact, the two new additions to the River Bandits roster wasted little time in making an impact on their club. Alex Gonzalez, who spent all of last year in the GCL, got the start at 3B and went 2-5 with a pair of run-scoring doubles in the 3rd (1 RBI) and the 9th (2). He also scored the only run that wasn't batted in when he came home on an error that allowed Jobduan Morales to reach in the 4th. Chase McDonald also had himself a pair of RBI doubles in the 3rd and the 9th.

Adrian Houser went 4 innings and gave up 2 runs on 4 hits, walked 4, and struck out 3. Pat Christensen worked around a hit to throw a scoreless 5th. Gonzalo Sañudo tagged in for 3 scoreless, allowing 2 hits and striking out 3. He's now on a 39-inning scoreless streak dating back to last season. Andrew Walter walked 1 and struck out 1 in a scoreless 9th to end it.

Chris Lee and Andrew Thurman will be the pairing for game 3, and they'll be taking on Carlos Misell. First pitch is at 6:30.

Oklahoma City 3, New Orleans 2

W- Nick Tropeano (1-1)
L- Chris Hatcher (0-1)
S- Jason Stoffel (3)

OKC home runs: Max Stassi (2, solo in 2nd)

In a matinee in the Big Easy, the RedHawks won the series thanks to a 9th-inning rally that culminated in a 2-run single from Ronald Torreyes that gave them a 3-2 lead. Well, the rally consisted of 3 straight 1-out walks, and on a 1-0 count, Torreyes laced a ball into right field to bring home Domingo Santana (who entered as a pinch-runner) and Erik Castro. Max Stassi opened up the scoring with a solo homer (2) in the 2nd inning. Gregorio Petit finished 2-4 with a double.

Collin McHugh allowed 2 runs (both in the 4th) on 5 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3 in 4 innings. Jose Cisnero was the first man out, and he threw a scoreless 5th, allowing a hit and striking out 1. Nick Tropeano tossed 3 scoreless as the piggybacker and allowed a hit, a walk, and struck out 1. And finally, Jason Stoffel notched his 3rd save of the year by fanning 1 in a 1-2-3 9th.

The RedHawks will now look for the sweep as Bobby Doran and David Martinez will team up to take on Adam Conley. First pitch is at 7:00.

Corpus Christi was off

The Hooks will have their home opener tonight as they host Tulsa in the first of 3 games. Ross Seaton and Luis Cruz will take on Dan Winkler at 7:10.

Lancaster 9, San Jose 4

W- Chris Devenski (1-1)
L- Kendry Flores (1-1)
S- Josh Hader (1)

Lancaster home runs: Tony Kemp (1, grand slam in 6th), Teoscar Hernandez (1, solo in 6th)

Sweep! That's the way to close out the first homestand of the season. After falling behind 2-1 after the 4th, the JetHawks ran off 8 unanswered, including a 6-run 6th.

Carlos Perdomo hit a triple with 1 out in the 3rd and scored the first run of the game on a Tony Kemp sac fly. Kemp would drive in another run when he grounded into a force out in the 5th, then he scored on a Teoscar Hernandez triple. And then... all hell broke loose in the 6th.

Dan Gulbransen walked to lead off the inning, then one batter later, he moved to 3rd on a Brandon Meredith double. Danry Vasquez walked to load the bases, then Jake Rodriguez walked Gulbransen home. After Jordan Scott and Perdomo struck out, Kemp stepped up and sent out a grand slam. He finished 3-4 with 2 runs scored, 6 RBI, and a steal (2). Soon after that, Teoscar Hernandez went back-to-back with a solo shot (1). Perdomo and Hernandez both finished with 2 hits.

Chris Devenski had a solid night, with his only mistake coming on a 2-run homer from Mitch Delfino in the 4th. He went 5 innings, allowed 3 other hits, and struck out 4. Josh Hader finished out the tandem complete game. He, like Devenski, got dinged by a 2-run homer from Delfino, who was the entire San Jose offense. Hader allowed 2 other hits and struck out 4 in 4 innings.

Lancaster will now head out on their first roadtrip of the season, as they travel to Lake Elsinore for 4 and High Desert for 3. The series opener in Lake Elsinore will feature the team of Mike Hauschild and Mark Appel going up against Colin Rea. First pitch will be at 7:05 Pacific.

Lansing 6, Quad Cities 4

W- Griffin Murphy (1-0)
L- Jandel Gustave (0-1)
S- Scott Silverstein (1)

QC home runs: None.

The River Bandits had their chances to get even more runs, but they left the bases loaded in the 1st and the 8th.

Lansing jumped all over Jandel Gustave in the first third of the game, as they got 5 runs off of him in 2.2 innings. He allowed 7 hits and struck out 4. Zach Morton allowed a hit in 1.1 scoreless innings. Interestingly, he did not record a groundout, which is something that he is rather adept at doing; all 4 of his outs were strikeouts. Kent Emanuel pitched the final 4 innings and allowed a run on 3 hits and struck out 3.

Tyler White had all the RBIs for QC as he ripped a pair of 2-run doubles in the 1st and the 5th. Jack Mayfield went 2-4 and scored twice.

The River Bandits will look to salvage a game in the series as Evan Grills and Michael Feliz take on Crosby native Jeremy Gabryszwski at 7:05 Eastern.

Happy Birthday - 4/7

Happy Birthday to ~

LHP Josh Hader (20)
Originally drafted by the Orioles in the 19th round in 2012, Hader came to the Houston organization as a part of the July 2013 trade that sent Bud Norris to Baltimore. In five regular season starts for Quad Cities last season after the trade, Hader was 2-0 with a 3.22 and a 1.164 WHIP. In his first start for Lancaster this past Saturday, he allowed four hits and one run while striking out 10 in his four innings of work. Hader was recently named the #14 prospect in the Astros system by Baseball America.

RHP Chia-Jen Lo (28)
A native of Taiwan, Lo was signed by the Astros before the 2009 season. After pitching in 17 games at three levels of the minor leagues in 2013, Lo made his major league debut on July 31, 2013. He appeared in 19 games for the Astros, compiling a 4.19 ERA and a 1.397 WHIP. He is starting this season as a part of the AAA Oklahoma City RedHawks bullpen.

Let's play 2 in Davenport!

Round Rock 7, Oklahoma City 4

W- Scott Baker (1-0)
L- Nick Tropeano (0-1)

OKC home runs: Carlos Perez (1, solo in 3rd), Jon Singleton (1, 2-run in 8th)

A bases-clearing triple turned the tide of this game overwhelmingly in favor of Round Rock.

Carlos Perez opened the scoring with a solo shot in the 3rd, his 1st of the year. Jon Singleton added a 2-run homer in the 8th, and Ronald Torreyes hit an RBI double in the top of the 9th. But, the damage had already been done.

Nick Tropeano went 3.1 innings and allowed 4 runs on 5 hits (solo homer), walked 4, and struck out 4. He allowed a solo homer to Kensuke Tanaka in the bottom of the 3rd, then had runners on 1st and 2nd later in the inning, but nothing came of that. The wheels fell off for him in the 4th when 2 walks and a single resulted in a bases-clearing triple that knocked him out of the game. Jose Cisnero cleaned up the mess by getting the final 2 outs of the inning, then striking out 2 in a scoreless 5th. He walked 1, but otherwise had another solid relief outing. Collin McHugh came on for the final 3 innings, and he allowed 3 runs on 2 hits, walked 3, and struck out 2.

David Martinez will team up with Bobby Doran to take on Colby Lewis in the series finale. First pitch will be at 1:05.

Corpus Christi 7, Tulsa 4

W- Luis Cruz (1-0)
L- Jonathan Gray (0-1)
S- Andrew Robinson (1)

CC home runs: Preston Tucker (1, solo in 2nd), Rene Garcia (1, 2-run in 7th)

The Hooks emerged from their opening series with a winning record as they topped the 3rd overall pick in this most recent draft.

Delino DeShields got plunked on a 2-2 count to begin the game. He would go on to steal 2nd, advanced to 3rd when Gray threw the ball away attempting to pick him off, and scored the first run of the night on a sac fly from Andrew Aplin. Preston Tucker went 2-3 and led off the 2nd with a homer, his 1st of the season.

After DeShields got hit by Gray again in the 3rd, he advanced to 3rd on a Nolan Fontana ground-rule double. Both of them scored on an Aplin 2-run single. In the 7th, M.P. Cokinos hit a 1-out single and scored on a Rene Garcia homer, his 1st. Soon after that, DeShields was back at it again. He singled, stole 2nd (again), and on the ensuing error, advanced to 3rd. He'd score the Hooks' final run of the night on a Fontana single.

In addition to Tucker, he (still referring to DeShields), Fontana, Cokinos, and Garcia all had 2 hits. For the 2nd straight night, DeShields had a 2-steal game. He got caught once, but that's the occupational hazard. Garcia even stole a base!

Luis Cruz had an impressive final couple of weeks to close out 2013 with Corpus; he drew a tough assignment facing Gray, but was more than up to the task. In my slightly biased opinion, he probably outpitched Gray last night. Cruz went 5 innings and allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, walked 1, and struck out 5. Ross Seaton was just one out away from the tandem complete game; he went 3.2 innings and allowed 2 runs (both on a Ryan Casteel HR) on 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3. Seaton couldn't quite finish it out as a 9th-inning single loaded the bases and signaled the end of his night. Andrew Robinson was tasked with preserving the lead and he did just that, striking out Taylor Featherston to end the game.

In the 2nd leg of their season-opening roadtrip, the Hooks will be in Springfield for 3 against the Cardinals. Tom Shirley and Matt Heidenreich will take on Sam Gaviglio at 4:10.

Lake Elsinore 8, Lancaster 7

W- Cody Hebner (1-0)
L- Chris Devenski (0-1)
S- Trevor Gott (1)

Lancaster home runs: None.

Wowza. Josh Hader absolutely quieted the Storm. He went 4 innings and allowed a run (on a wild pitch), 4 hits, hit a batter, and struck out 10. His final 7 outs were all via K: he struck out the side in the 3rd and 4 in the 4th. However, Hader also uncorked 4 wild pitches. 3 of those came in the 4th and resulted in a Lake Elsinore run.

Unfortunately, that effort would go to waste as Dan Minor and Chris Devenski couldn't back Hader up. Minor gave up 3 runs on 3 hits in the 5th. Devenski, the piggybacker, went 3 innings and allowed 4 runs (all in the 8th) on 5 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3. Jamaine Cotton allowed a hit and walked 2 in a scoreless 9th; he got out of a bases-loaded, 2-out situation.

The JetHawks blew a 5-0 lead, which they had built in the first third of the game. Tony Kemp kicked off the scoring in the 1st by drawing a walk, advancing to 3rd on a couple of groundouts, and scored on a wild pitch. Jake Rodriguez hit a 2-run single in the 2nd, and Dan Gulbransen ripped a 2-run double in the 3rd. Gulbransen hit 2 doubles in the game and finished 3-5. Jordan Scott hit an RBI groundout in the 5th and an RBI single in the bottom of the 9th, but he was the final out of the game, as he got caught trying to stretch that single into a double.

Danry Vasquez went 3-5 with 4 runs scored. Carlos Correa and Rio Ruiz both went 2-5. Lancaster would rue its missed opportunities; they left the bases loaded in the 2nd and 3rd, and runners on the corners in the 7th.

Mark Appel will make his season debut in the series finale. He'll team up with Mike Hauschild to take on Ruben Mejia. First pitch is at 2:00 Pacific. Interesting pairing; Hauschild's Dayton Flyers eliminated Appel's Stanford Cardinal in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament a little over a week ago.

Game 1: Quad Cities 2, Kane County 1

W- Jandel Gustave (1-0)
L- Zack Godley (0-1)

Quad Cities home runs: None.

In the first game of this twinbill, the River Bandits stole victory from the jaws of defeat in walk-off fashion.

Jack Mayfield led off the bottom of the 2nd with a double, advanced to 3rd on a passed ball, and scored the tying run on a wild pitch. Chase McDonald, who was at the plate at the time, eventually drew a walk, then was lifted for Chan-Jong Moon. Moon advanced to 2nd as Brian Holberton walked, then they both advanced on a wild pitch with Tyler White at bat. White then delivered the winner by poking a ball through the left side of the infield. Mayfield, White, Tanner Mathis, and Catfish Elkins had the 4 QC hits.

Kent Emanuel went 4 innings and allowed an unearned run on 2 hits and struck out 2. Jandel Gustave pitched 3 near-perfect innings to get the victory; he was just one hit batter away from being perfect.

What would game 2 hold in store?

Game 2: Kane County 5, Quad Cities 4 in 10 innings

W- Justin Amlung (1-0)
L- Chris Cotton (0-1)

Quad Cities home runs: None.

Quad Cities had to settle for a split as Jacob Rogers' go-ahead single in the top of the 10th held up. Jacob Hannemann, who scored on the play, struck out to begin the inning, but reached anyway on a Conrad Gregor error.

This game had the same formula as the first; the River Bandits trailed for a significant portion of the game, but were able to tie it late thanks to a big rally. They had the bases loaded in the 3rd, but only got a James Ramsay sac fly for their trouble. Down 4-1 in the 6th, they finally got even with the Cougars with 3 in the bottom of the 6th.

Jon Kemmer led off with a single, then Catfish Elkins followed suit. A Tanner Mathis groundout allowed the two of them to advance, then after a Jobduan Morales strikeout, Chan-Jong Moon walked to load the bases. A balk advanced everyone, then Ramsay walked to re-load the bases. Jack Mayfield hit the game-tying 2-run single, but was the final out of the inning as he failed in his attempt to stretch out his hit. With the chance for another walk-off win, the bases were loaded again in the 8th, but Kemmer flew out to end the inning. Morales hit a 2-out double in the 9th but was stranded, and Conrad Gregor singled in the 10th but was forced out to end the game.

Kemmer, Mathis, Morales, Elkins, and Moon all had 2 hits. The starting 9 drew 9 walks, 3 of which were drawn by Gregor.

Michael Feliz made his Midwest League debut and was greeted rather rudely, as Hannemann took him deep to begin the game and Daniel Canela followed suit to begin the 2nd inning. Those 2 solo shots were the only runs he allowed in 3 innings. He allowed one other hit, walked 1, and struck out 4. Evan Grills pitched the next 3 innings and gave up 2 unearned runs on 4 hits and fanned 2. Andrew Walter struck out 1 over 2 perfect innings, and Chris Cotton got saddled with the loss, as he allowed the go-ahead run to score. The run was unearned, he allowed 2 hits, and struck out 3 over 2 innings.

In the series finale, Adrian Houser and Gonzalo Sanudo will take on Juan Carlos Paniagua at 1:15.
