Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Thursday, June 9, 2016

Salt Lake 12, Fresno 10 in 10 innings

W- Geoff Broussard (1-1)
L- James Hoyt (3-3)
S- Al Alburquerque (7)

Fresno home runs: None.

The Grizzlies managed to erase an early 9-1 deficit.... only to see the Bees win it with 2 in the first extra frame.

Preston Tucker drove in the first run of the evening on a sacrifice fly in the 1st inning. Tyler Heineman hit an RBI single in the 4th. Fresno scored 2 runs in the 5th thanks to a double from A.J. Reed. They scored 3 in the 6th, thanks to an RBI double from Andrew Aplin, who later scored when Tucker grounded into a force out. Colin Moran also hit an RBI single in the 6th. The Grizz scored 3 more in the 7th as Aplin and Danny Worth hit RBI singles; Aplin later scored on an error that allowed Tucker to reach.

Aplin (2B, 2 RBI, 3 R) and Worth (RBI, R) both finished 3-5. Reed (2B, 2 RBI, R), Jon Singleton (2B, R), and Nolan Fontana (R) had 2 hits apiece in this game.

Tommy Shirley got shelled in his 2.1 innings. We'll just leave it at that. Chris Cotton was the first man out of the Fresno bullpen; he went 2.2 innings and allowed a run on 3 hits and struck out 1. Reymin Guduan allowed 2 hits and fanned 2 over 2 scoreless. Jordan Jankowski got a popout and a couple of groundouts in a 1-2-3 8th. James Hoyt pitched 1.2 innings, and the only hit that he allowed was rather costly, as it was the tiebreaking 2-run single in the 10th. He walked 4 and struck out 5. Kevin Chapman got the final out of the 10th inning.

In game 2 of this series, Brad Peacock will take on Kyle McGowin. First pitch is at 7:05 Pacific.

Corpus Christi 7, Midland 0

W- Francis Martes (3-2)
L- Joel Seddon (1-6)

CC home runs: Alejandro Garcia (1, 2-run in 2nd), Chase McDonald (10, solo in 4th), Conrad Gregor (2, solo in 4th)

An early offensive outburst was enough to secure the win, and Francis Martes had his best start of the season as he and Eric Peterson combined to keep the RockHounds off the scoreboard.

Martes allowed 5 hits, walked 1, and struck out 9 over 6.2 shutout innings, and Peterson allowed 2 hits and fanned 2 over the final 2.1 innings.

Alex Bregman tripled with 1 out in the 1st and scored the game's first run on a double from D.J. Fisher. Alfredo Gonzalez hit a 1-out double in the 2nd, and one batter later, Alejandro Garcia clubbed his first home run of the season to put Corpus up 3-0. Chase McDonald and Conrad Gregor led off the 4th with back-to-back solo shots, and Bregman smacked a 2-run double later in the inning. Everyone in the lineup had a hit; Teoscar Hernandez and Bregman had 2 apiece.

The Hooks will look for the sweep as Edison Frias takes the mound. He'll face Corey Walter at 7:05.

Visalia 5, Lancaster 1

W- Shelby Miller (1-0)
L- Trent Thornton (2-3)

Lancaster home runs: None.

The JetHawks couldn't recover from an early 5-0 deficit, and their bats went silent.

Lancaster only got 3 hits in this game, and Jason Martin's RBI triple in the 7th was their only scoring play. Ramon Laureano, who scored the only JetHawks run, stole his 24th base of the season.

Trent Thornton was victimized by the longball in his 4.1 innings; all 5 of Visalia's runs off of him scored on a couple of 2-run homers hit by Marty Herum and a solo shot from Oscar Hernandez. He allowed 4 other hits, walked 2, and struck out 3. Josh James tagged in to strike out 5 over 2.2 perfect innings, and Yeyfry Del Rosario struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 8th.

Brock Dykxhoorn will start game 2 of this series. He'll take on Josh Taylor at 7:00 Pacific.

Quad Cities 5, Beloit 2

W- Elieser Hernandez (2-0, 3-4 season)
L- Kevin Johnson (0-1)
S- Jose Luis Hernandez (1)

QC home runs: None.

The Banditos took 2 of 3 from the Snappers as they got out to an early lead and got solid performances on the mound from the Hernandezes.

Elieser allowed a run on 3 hits and fanned 5 in 5 innings of work. Jose Luis pitched the final 4 innings, and the only run he allowed came on a solo homer hit by Justin Higley in the 8th. He allowed 4 other hits and struck out 4.

Myles Straw led off the bottom of the 1st with a single. He advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch and a passed ball and scored the first run of the game on an RBI single from Osvaldo Duarte. In the 2nd, it was Straw's turn to drive in a run, and he did so with an RBI single. Duarte added an RBI triple to his ledger in the 7th, and he trotted home on a Keach Ballard double.

Straw and Duarte wreaked havoc from the top of the order as they combined to go 5-8 (Straw 3-4, Duarte 2-4) with 3 RBI (Duarte 2, Straw 1) and 4 runs scored; they both scored twice. Duarte also stole his 10th base of the season.

The River Bandits will spend the weekend in Burlington. Chris Murphy will start the first of 3 games against the Bees; he'll go up against Jared Ruxer at 6:30.

DSL Red Sox1 2, DSL Astros Blue 0

W- Carlos Cortes (1-0)
L- Juan Corniel (0-1)
S- Angel Padron (1)

Blue home runs: None.

The Blue team outhit the Red Sox 7-4, but unfortunately, they couldn't push across any runs.

Angel Tejeda reached in all 4 of his plate appearances, going 3-3 with a walk. Alfredo Angarita finished 2-3 with a walk.

Javier Navas threw 4 no-hit innings, walking 2 and striking out 5. Yeremi Ceballos worked around a walk to throw a scoreless 5th, striking out 1. Juan Corniel pitched 3 innings and allowed a run on 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3. Robert Corniel allowed a run on 2 hits and struck out 2 in the 9th.

The Blue team will travel to the Red Sox complex as they look to avenge their first loss of the season. First pitch is at 10:30 AM Eastern.

DSL Astros Orange 3, DSL Phillies2 2

W- Luis Castro (1-0)
L- Leonel Aponte (0-1)
S- Cosme Zapata (1)

Orange home runs: None.

The Orange team won despite getting held to two hits.

All 3 of their runs came in the 5th inning. Bernardo Heras put them on the board with an RBI single. One batter later, he and Felix Lucas both scored on an errant pickoff throw. Vicente Mota's single to lead off the 2nd was the Orange team's only other hit.

Humberto Castellanos went 4 innings and allowed a run on a groundout, a single, and walked 2. Luis Castro allowed an unearned run on 2 hits, walked 2, and fanned 3 in 4 innings, and Cosme Zapata finished it off with a 1-2-3 9th.

These two teams will play again today at the Astros' complex. First pitch is at 10:30 AM Eastern.

Jose Luis Hernandez, RHP, Quad Cities: Save (1), 4 IP, 5 H (solo HR), ER, 4 K

Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Sunday, May 22, 2016

Not a happy Sunday in the Astros organization as everyone lost.

Memphis 8, Fresno 1

W- Ryan Sherriff (2-0)
L- Mike Hauschild (3-5)
S- Juan Gonzalez (2)

Fresno home runs: None.

The Grizzlies finished their tour of Tennessee with a 2-6 record. They were swept in Nashville and had to settle for a split in Memphis after the Redbirds buried them with a late offensive outburst.

Danny Worth's 7th-inning sac fly was Fresno's only scoring play. All of the Grizzlies' 6 hits in this game were singles.

Mike Hauschild went 6 innings and allowed 3 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 5. Jordan Jankowski was the first man out; he allowed 4 runs (2 inherited runners charged to him) on 3 hits (solo homer), walked 1, and struck out 2. Reymin Guduan got the final 2 outs of the 8th, but not before issuing a walk and allowing a bases-clearing double that resulted in both of the runners he inherited from Jankowski to score. One run was also charged to him on the play.

The Grizzlies are back home, where they'll begin a 4-game series with Oklahoma City tonight at 6:35 Pacific. Tommy Shirley will start game 1, and he'll face Mike Bolsinger.

Midland 7, Corpus Christi 6 in 10 innings

W- Sam Bragg (1-1)
L- Brendan McCurry (1-2)

CC home runs: Conrad Gregor (1, solo in 7th)

The Hooks fought back from a 6-2 deficit to force extras.... only to see the RockHounds walk off with the win in the first extra frame. They shot themselves in the foot by making 4 outs on the basepaths on the afternoon.

J.D. Davis wasted little time in extending his hitting streak to 10 games as he opened the scoring with an RBI double in the 1st. Conrad Gregor added an RBI groundout in the 4th. Gregor sparked a 7th-inning rally by leading off the inning with his first homer of the year. Nick Tanielu followed with a double, and Roberto Peña singled to put runners on the corners for Teoscar Hernandez, who came through with an RBI double. Alex Bregman followed that up with an RBI single. Alejandro Garcia led off the 9th with a single and moved to 2nd following a sac bunt from Peña. Teoscar moved him over to 3rd with a single, and he scored the tying run when Bobby Wahl uncorked a wild pitch. Bregman was given a free pass to 1st, but Teoscar got picked off 2nd base for the 2nd out, and D.J. Fisher struck out to end the threat.

Teoscar finished 3-4 with the RBI double and stole 2 bases (15), but he was also caught stealing twice and was picked off 2nd base in the 9th. Davis also had 3 hits on the day; 2 of them were two-baggers. Alejandro Garcia was 2-4 and scored the tying run. Nick Tanielu's 2 hits on the day were both doubles.

Brian Holmes went 5 innings and allowed 5 runs (4 earned) on 9 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1. Evan Grills tagged in for 4 innings and allowed a run on 5 hits and walked 2. Brendan McCurry allowed the game-winner, an RBI single from Wade Kirkland with 1 out in the 10th.

The Hooks and Hounds will wrap up the series tonight as Francis Martes takes on Joel Seddon. First pitch is at 6:30.

High Desert 6, Lancaster 0

W- Ariel Jurado (4-1)
L- Josh James (3-2)

Lancaster home runs: None.

The JetHawks couldn't back up another solid outing from Josh James, and then the wheels fell off.

The only run that James allowed in his 5.2 innings of work was a solo homer from Scott Heineman, Tyler's brother, in the 4th. He allowed one other hit, walked 3, and struck out 4. Yeyfry Del Rosario pitched the final 2.1 innings and allowed 5 runs (all in the 8th) on 8 hits and struck out 3. He's allowed 16 runs as a member of the JetHawks; 13 of them have been scored by the Mavericks.

Bryan Muñiz extended his hitting streak to 9 games with a single in the 1st. Tony Nuñez had the other Lancaster single.

Trent Thornton will start the series finale. First pitch is at 6:35 Pacific.

Cedar Rapids 8, Quad Cities 1

W- Miles Nordgren (2-1)
L- Yoanys Quiala (0-1)

QC home runs: None.

The Banditos got on the board first.... but it was all Kernels after that as they scored 8 unanswered to blast Quad Cities.

Kyle Tucker's RBI groundout in the 1st was Quad Cities' only scoring play. Osvaldo Duarte finished 2-4.

Yoanys Quiala went 4.2 innings and allowed 5 runs (3 earned, 2 inherited runners charged to him) on 8 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3. Ricardo Castro and Luis Ramirez both made their 2016 debuts; Castro allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2 in 2.1 innings, and Ramirez allowed a solo homer to Zander Wiel in the 8th. He also allowed a double in the inning.

Chris Murphy will start the series finale. He'll face Cody Stashak at 12:05.

Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Tuesday, May 17, 2016

Nashville 2, Fresno 1

W- Dillon Overton (2-4)
L- Tommy Shirley (3-3)
S- J.B. Wendelken (3)

Fresno home runs: None.

The Grizzlies were swept in a series for the first time this season as their bats went quiet once again. They've gone 2-9 in their last 11 games.

Max Stassi tripled with 1 out in the 2nd and scored Fresno's only run on an Andrew Aplin groundout. Stassi finished 2-4. They stranded runners on the corners to end an 8th-inning threat.

Tommy Shirley went 5.2 innings and allowed 2 runs (1 inherited runner charged to him) on 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1. Reymin Guduan pitched 0.2 innings (final out of the 6th, first out of the 7th) and was greeted rather rudely by Matt Olson, who hit a go-ahead RBI ground-rule double to put the Sounds in front. Guduan issued an intentional walk to load the bases, but he got out of the inning by striking out Bryan Anderson. After Guduan got the first out of the 7th, Jandel Gustave came in, and he got a popout and a flyout to end the inning. James Hoyt struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 8th.

Fresno has Wednesday off. Joe Musgrove will start the first game in Memphis on Thursday.

Corpus Christi 2, San Antonio 1 in 13 innings

W- Aaron West (1-0)
L- Rafael De Paula (0-1)
S- Brendan McCurry (6)

CC home runs: Trent Woodward (1, solo in 13th)

Trent Woodward's blast in the top of the 13th and some clutch defense in the bottom half of the inning proved to be the difference in this game. The Hooks extended their winning streak to 8 games as they've really come alive this month.

Alex Bregman put Corpus on the board first with an RBI groundout in the 5th. The Missions tied the game at 1 in the 6th, and that's where it stood until the 13th inning. Conrad Gregor led off and was the first casualty of the inning after he flew out. Trent Woodward, who was 0-5 at the time, stepped in and proceeded to give the Hooks the lead by sending a Rafael De Paula offering into the night.

Chase McDonald and Roberto Peña both had 2 hits, while Chan-Jong Moon went 3-5 with a stolen base (4). Teoscar Hernandez stole 2 bases (12).

Francis Martes turned in 6 solid innings, allowing a run on 4 hits, walking 1, and striking out 5. Angel Heredia and Aaron West followed with 3 scoreless innings; Heredia, who was making his Texas League debut, allowed 2 hits and struck out 4, while West fanned 2 over 3 perfect innings.

Brendan McCurry was summoned for the save in the 13th. He retired the first man he faced, but then, things got a bit hairy as the next two batters singled off of him. Nelson Ward hit a third consecutive single, and Nick Schulz, who hit the first single, decided to test Teoscar. It did not end well for Schulz, who was cut down at home. After that scare, McCurry pulled himself together and struck out Gabriel Quintana to end the game.

The series continues later this morning. Cy Sneed will start for Corpus; he'll face Bryan Rodriguez at 11:05 A.M.

Lancaster 5, Inland Empire 3

W- Josh James (3-1)
L- Jose Molina (1-2)

Lancaster home runs: None.

A 3-run bottom of the 8th tipped the scales of this game in the JetHawks' favor.

Garrett Stubbs went 2-4 and opened the scoring with a 2-run single in the 3rd. However, Inland Empire quickly responded by scoring 3 in the top of the 4th to take the lead, and that's where this game stood until the bottom of the 8th.

Kristian Trompiz led off the inning with a single. Bobby Boyd followed by legging out a bunt single. Stubbs was the first casualty of the inning, but Drew Ferguson got plunked to load the bases. Nick Tanielu came up and tied the game with a sac fly. Brooks Marlow was next, and he came through with what turned out to be the game-winning hit, a 2-run double. That's a nice way to make a first impression on your new team. Bobby Boyd finished 3-4 with a double and 2 runs scored. Trompiz also scored 2 runs.

Trent Thornton went 5 innings and allowed 3 runs on 6 hits and fanned 4. Josh James shut the 66ers down in his 4 innings, allowing just 1 hit while striking out 5.

Scott Weathersby will start game 2 of this series. He'll face Jason Hoppe at 6:35 Pacific.

Clinton 6, Quad Cities 0

W- Zack Littell (2-4)
L- Chris Murphy (3-3)

QC home runs: None.

The Banditos' bats went quiet as they dropped the first of this 3-game series to the LumberKings.

Osvaldo Duarte singled and stole a base (5), while Keach Ballard singled and walked in his season debut.

Chris Murphy went 2.1 innings and allowed 4 runs on 7 hits, walked 3, and struck out 1. Adam Whitt allowed a hit and struck out 2 over 2.2 scoreless, and Yoanys Quiala went 4 innings, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits, walking 2, and striking out 3.

Kevin McCanna will start for Quad Cities tonight. He'll take on Kyle Wilcox at 7.

Honorable Mentions

James Hoyt, RHP, Fresno: IP, 2 K
- James Hoyt just continues to mow down the Pacific Coast League.

Francis Martes, RHP, Corpus Christi: 6 IP, 4 H, ER, BB, 5 K
- Martes turned in his best outing of the year. He's looking to right the ship after stumbling out of the gate.

Teoscar Hernandez, OF, Corpus Christi: 1-4, 2 SB (12), outfield assist to prevent tying run from scoring in 13th inning
- Teoscar came up huge on defense to protect the Hooks' lead. That play was a real boost for Brendan McCurry, who was on the ropes at the time.

Brooks Marlow, 2B, Lancaster: Go-ahead 2-R 2B in 8th; California League debut
Trent Woodward, C, Corpus Christi: Go-ahead solo HR (1) in 13th
- Marlow and Woodward came through in the clutch to help their teams win.

Bobby Boyd, OF, Lancaster: 3-4, 2B, 2 R
- Boyd is currently on a 9-game hitting streak. I'd like to see him improve that K:BB ratio a bit, because he can legitimately create chaos on the basepaths.

Adam Whitt, RHP, Quad Cities: 2.2 IP, H, 2 K
- Good outing from Whitt, who is also looking to bounce back from a tough start to his campaign.

W- Derek Eitel (1-0)
L- James Hoyt (0-2)

Fresno home runs: Jon Singleton (5, solo in 3rd)

The Grizzlies rallied to tie the game at 5 with a 3-run 8th inning.... only to see El Paso break the tie with the eventual winning run in the top of the 9th.

A.J. Reed put Fresno on the board with an RBI double in the 1st. Jon Singleton added another run in the 3rd with his 2nd homer in as many nights. Frisco 8, Corpus Christi 7

W- Cody Palmquist (1-0)
L- Francis Martes (1-2)

CC home runs: Chase McDonald (4, grand slam in 7th)

The Roughriders spoiled a huge night from Chase McDonald as they went ahead with a 5-run 8th.

McDonald was effectively the Hooks offense as he went 3-4 and drove in 6 of their 7 runs. He opened up the scoring with an RBI single in the 1st, added a sac fly in the 3rd, and clubbed a grand slam in the 7th that put Corpus up 7-3 at that point. Alfredo Gonzalez had an RBI groundout in the 4th. D.J. Fisher went 2-4 with a double and scored a run.

Brian Holmes went 5 innings and allowed 2 runs on 7 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4. Francis Martes will be looking to put a tough first month behind him. He allowed 6 runs (5 earned, 1 inherited runner charged to him) on 6 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2 in 2.1 innings. Michael Freeman got the final 2 outs of the 8th, but not before the go-ahead run that was charged to Martes scored.

Edison Frias will get the start tonight. He'll take on Frank Lopez at 7:05.

Lancaster 1, Lake Elsinore 0

W- Trent Thornton (1-0)
L- Dinelson Lamet (3-1)

Thornton allowed the hit and struck out 5 in 5 innings, while James walked 1 and fanned 6 in 4 innings.

Nick Tanielu went 2-3 and drove in the only run of the night with an RBI single in the 1st. Tanielu is currently on a 6-game hitting streak. Bobby Boyd stole 2 bases, making him the first man in the system to reach double digits in stolen bases.

Brock Dykxhoorn will start game 2 of this series. He'll face Thomas Dorminy at 6:00 Pacific.

Quad Cities 2, West Michigan 1

W- Sebastian Kessay (1-2)
L- Toller Boardman (1-3)
S- Andrew Thome (3)

QC home runs: None.

The Banditos scored the last 2 runs of the game to edge the Whitecaps in game 1. They won despite going 0-13 with runners in scoring position.

Brooks Marlow drove in Quad Cities' first run of the evening on a fielder's choice that scored Christian Correa in the 5th. Connor Goedert hit a single in the 8th, and Kyle Tucker scored the go-ahead run on the ensuing error. Bobby Wernes went 3-3 with 2 doubles, while Correa finished 2-3.

Kevin McCanna went 4 innings and allowed a run on 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2. Ryan Deemes was the first man out, and he worked around a walk to throw a scoreless 5th. Sebastian Kessay allowed 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 6 over 3 scoreless to get the win, and Andrew Thome shut the door despite allowing 2 hits in the 9th.

In game 2, Justin Ferrell will make his 2016 debut. He'll take on Beau Burrows at 6:00.

Happy Birthday - 3/8

Happy Birthday to ~

RHP Joshua James (22)
Drafted by Houston in the 34th round in 2014, James spent his first professional season pitching for the Greeneville Astros. In 13 games (six starts), he was 1-3 with a 2.72 ERA and a 1.261 WHIP.
