Fresno 8, Tacoma 7 in 10 innings

W- Dayan Diaz (3-0)
L- Nick Hagadone (2-2)
S- Reymin Guduan (1)

Fresno home runs: Jon Kemmer (5, solo in 5th), Tony Kemp (1, 2-run in 5th), Colin Moran (8, 2-run in 10th)

The Grizzlies earned the split in the Pacific Northwest with an extra-inning victory.

Francis Martes hasn't had the most stellar start to his season but this outing looks to be a step in the right direction. He went 5.2 innings and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits (solo homer), walked 1, and struck out 9. Martes hit 98 MPH on his final pitch of the night. Ashur Tolliver got the final out of the 6th and the first out of the 7th, but he allowed 3 runs (1 inherited runner charged to him) on 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1.

Dayan Diaz was next: he didn't allow a run of his own in 2.2 innings, but he did allow the runner he inherited from Tolliver to score, which tied the game at 5. Diaz also allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3. Aaron West came on for the 10th but allowed 2 runs (1 inherited runner charged to him) on 4 hits and failed to record an out. Reymin Guduan took ownership of the 10th and got a double play (that resulted in one of West's runners scoring) and struck out Leonys Martín to end the game.

Jon Kemmer put Fresno on the board with a solo shot in the 5th inning and Tony Kemp chipped in with a 2-run blast to put them in front. Kemp added a 2-run double to his ledger in the 7th. Fresno broke a 5-5 tie in the first extra frame as Colin Moran launched a 2-run homer and Kemmer added an RBI double to his line.

Kemmer finished 3-4 on the evening. Kemp (2B, 2-R HR, 4 RBI, R), Moran (2-R HR), Reid Brignac, and D.J. Fisher (SB, R) all had two hits in the game. Max Stassi went 0-2 but walked twice and scored twice.

Fresno is back home and they are rolling out the welcome mat for Albuquerque. Casey Coleman will get the start against Jeff Hoffman. First pitch is at 7:05.

Corpus Christi 10, Tulsa 7

W- Cy Sneed (3-4)
L- Andrew Sopko (0-4)

CC home runs: J.D. Davis (11, 3-run in 2nd)

The Hooks stormed out to a 7-2 lead and staved off a Tulsa uprising in the late innings to come out victorious.

Brock Dykxhoorn and Cy Sneed both pitched 4 innings and they both allowed 3 runs. Dykxhoorn allowed 7 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3, while Sneed allowed 3 hits, walked 1, and fanned 6. Andrew Thome allowed a run on 2 hits and struck out 1 in the 9th.

Jon Singleton smacked an RBI double in the 1st inning to put Corpus on the board. Ramon Laureano followed by reaching on an error that allowed Garrett Stubbs to score; he was credited with an RBI on the play. Singleton put the Hooks in front when he scored on a wild pitch while Laureano stole 2nd. Laureano ended up at 3rd and scored on a Jamie Ritchie sac fly. J.D. Davis whacked a 3-run homer in the 2nd, his system-leading 11th of the year. Laureano ripped an RBI double in the 7th and Singleton added a 2-run single to his ledger in the 8th.

Singleton (2B, 3 RBI, 2 R) and Drew Ferguson (2 R, BB, SB) both finished with 3 hits and 2 runs scored; Ferguson extended his hitting streak to 23 games. Stubbs walked 4 times and scored 3 runs.

Akeem Bostick gets the start in game 2 of this series. He'll face Josh Sborz at 7:05.

Frederick 9, Buies Creek 5

W- Mike Burke (1-0)
L- Matt Bower (2-2)

BC home runs: Ryne Birk (4, 2-run in 7th)

The Astros got torched by a 3-homer performance from Frederick's Ryan Mountcastle on Friday night.

Jake Rogers put Buies Creek on the board with a 2-run double in the 3rd inning. Spencer Johnson hit an RBI single in the 4th, and Ryne Birk smacked a 2-run homer in the 7th. Rogers went 2-3 on the night.

Matt Bower got knocked around in his 4.2 innings. I think some things are better left unsaid. Devon Carr issued a walk and got the final out of the 5th. Yoanys Quiala pitched the final 3 innings and the one hit he allowed was a solo homer to Mountcastle, his third of the night. He also walked 1 and struck out 1.

Game 2 of this series starts at 5:00 Eastern as Framber Valdez takes on Ofelky Peralta.

Beloit 6, Quad Cities 3 in 11 innings

W- Yordys Alejo (1-1)
L- Kevin Hill (1-1)

QC home runs: None.

Both teams scored a run in the first extra frame, but the Snappers seized control with 3 in the top of the 11th.

In his first game since coming off the disabled list, Alex De Goti went 2-5 with an RBI double in the 4th inning. Yordan Alvarez also turned in a 2-hit night; one of those two hits was an RBI single in the 5th. He walked to lead off the bottom of the 10th and scored on an Osvaldo Duarte double. Duarte's two hits were both doubles. Stephen Wrenn also went 2-4 out of the leadoff spot.

Dustin Hunt went 4 innings and allowed a run on 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4. Abdiel Saldaña and Lucas Williams followed with 3 innings apiece out of the Banditos bullpen. Saldaña allowed a run on 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2, while Williams allowed a run on 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1. Beloit got to Kevin Hill for 3 runs on 4 hits in the 11th inning.

The series continues at 6:35 as Carson LaRue faces Brendan Butler.

Memphis 4, Fresno 2

W- Marco Gonzales (1-0)
L- Francis Martes (0-2)
S- Ryan Sherriff (3)

Fresno home runs: Colin Moran (8, 2-run in 8th)

The Grizzlies held the Redbirds to four hits in this game, but Memphis came out on top in the column that matters most. Fresno was left to rue some missed chances on Saturday night: they stranded two runners in scoring position to end the 6th. Also, A.J. Reed doubled to lead off the 7th but couldn't advance further.

Colin Moran extended his hitting streak to 8 games and launched a 2-run homer in the 8th for the Grizzlies' only runs of the night. He and Reed both finished 2-4.

Francis Martes went 5 innings, and the two runs he allowed came on a homer hit by Patrick Wisdom in the 2nd inning. He allowed one other hit, walked 4, and struck out 7. Tyson Perez went 2 innings and allowed 2 runs on 2 hits (solo homer) and struck out 2. Jordan Jankowski and Dayan Diaz both threw 1-2-3 innings; Jankowski struck out 2 in the 8th, while Diaz logged an immaculate 9th inning, striking out the side on 9 pitches.

Casey Coleman takes the mound in game 3 of this series. He'll go up against Artie Reyes at 1:05 Pacific.

Frisco 6, Corpus Christi 2

W- Ariel Jurado (4-3)
L- Cy Sneed (2-4)

CC home runs: Bobby Boyd (2, 2-run in 7th)

The Hooks didn't have an answer for Ariel Jurado on Saturday night.

To clarify: they didn't have an answer for Jurado until the 7th, when Bobby Boyd launched a 2-run homer to knock him out of the game. Kristian Trompiz and Drew Ferguson followed up with singles to keep the inning alive, but they were both stranded on the basepaths to end the inning. Ferguson, Trompiz, and Ramon Laureano all had 2 hits on the night; Ferguson has extended his hitting streak to 17 games, matching the season-high in the system set by D.J. Fisher in Fresno.

Cy Sneed went 3 innings and allowed 5 runs (4 earned) on 8 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2. Riley Ferrell allowed a run on 3 hits and struck out 1 in 2 innings, and Brock Dykxhoorn was the only Hooks hurler to turn in a scoreless outing; he allowed 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 1.

Akeem Bostick is back from the disabled list, and he gets another crack at his old organization. He'll face David Ledbetter at 4:05.

Buies Creek 8, Down East 2

W- Yoanys Quiala (4-1)
L- Richelson Peña (2-2)
S- Framber Valdez (1)

BC home runs: None.

The Carolina Stros stormed out to a 6-0 lead after 0.5 innings and cruised to the finish.

The one run that Yoanys Quiala allowed in his 5 innings came on a solo homer hit by Michael O'Neill in the 2nd inning. Other than that, he had a largely stress-free evening. Quiala allowed one other hit, walked 1, and struck out 2. Framber Valdez tagged in to work the final 4 innings; the one hit (and run) he allowed was an RBI single in the 7th. He walked 2 and struck out 6.

Buies Creek loaded the bases right off the bat as Jason Martin singled, Ryne Birk got hit by a pitch, and Jake Rogers drew a walk. Kyle Tucker promptly sent them all home with a double. Spencer Johnson and Pat Porter walked to re-load the bases. Arturo Michelena was the first casualty of the evening, but Dex McCall walked to bring in Tucker and knock out Peña. Martin ripped a 2-run double in his second plate appearance of the inning.

Anibal Sierra hit a sac fly in the 3rd and Johnson capped off the night with an RBI double in the 8th. Martin and Michelena both finished with 3 hits on the evening, while Little Tuck went 2-4.

Hector Perez will face Pedro Payano in game 3 of this series. First pitch is at 2:00 Eastern.

Kane County 1, Quad Cities 0

W- Ryan Burr (1-1)
L- Abdiel Saldaña (1-1)
S- Tommy Eveld (8)

QC home runs: None.

The Banditos have been shut out in each of the first three games in this series. The last time they scored was in the 4th inning against Burlington on Wednesday, which was 31 innings ago.

Ryan Hartman allowed 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 7 over 6 shutout innings. Abdiel Saldaña pitched 2 innings and allowed the game's only run (which was unearned) on an RBI single. He allowed two other hits and struck out 1.

Yordan Alvarez went 2-4 with a double; he has a hit in 5 out his first 6 games with Quad Cities.

Quad Cities isn't just looking to avoid the sweep, they're looking to get on the scoreboard for the first time this weekend. Carson LaRue will take on Sam McWilliams at 1:00.

Reno 5, Fresno 2

W- Frank Duncan (1-0)
L- Reymin Guduan (0-1)
S- Enrique Burgos (1)

Fresno home runs: Teoscar Hernandez (2, solo in 1st), Tyler White (1, solo in 7th)

The wheels fell off late for the Grizzlies bullpen.

Francis Martes had a nice AAA debut as he allowed 3 hits, walked 3, and struck out 3 over 5 shutout innings. He had to work his way out of trouble a few times but managed to emerge unscathed. Dayan Diaz threw a 1-2-3 6th inning. Reymin Guduan got two outs in the 7th, both via strikeout, but the Aces knocked him around to the tune of 5 runs (2 inherited runners charged to him) on 5 hits. Jordan Jankowski got the final out of the 7th, but not before allowing a 2-run double that allowed the runners he inherited from Guduan to score. Jared Mortensen allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 1 over the final 2 innings.

The Grizzlies' two runs came on the two solo shots you see above. Teoscar Hernandez went 2-3 and also stole his first base of the season.

Fresno will hit the road for the first time this season. Their first stop is Las Vegas for four games. Keegan Yuhl will face Adam Wilk in game 1. First pitch is at 7:05 Pacific.

Corpus Christi 3, Northwest Arkansas 2

W- Josh James (1-0)
L- Corey Ray (0-1)
S- Kevin Comer (1)

CC home runs: Jack Mayfield (1, solo in 1st)

A 5th-inning run broke a 2-2 tie in the Hooks' favor, and Josh James had a nice outing out of the bullpen.

Brock Dykxhoorn pitched 4 innings and allowed 2 runs on 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4. Josh James allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2 in his 4 innings of work, and Kevin Comer worked around a hit in the 9th to close it out, striking out 1.

Jack Mayfield opened the scoring with a solo homer in the 1st. Alejandro Garcia added an RBI single later in the inning. Ramon Laureano drove in what turned out to be the winning run with a groundout in the 5th.

Cy Sneed takes on Zach Lovvorn in game 2 of this series. First pitch is at 7:05.

Buies Creek 3, Myrtle Beach 2

W- Yoanys Quiala (1-0)
L- Casey Bloomquist (0-1)
S- Riley Ferrell (2)

BC home runs: None.

The Buies Creek Astros are still on pace for an undefeated season as Yoanys Quiala and Riley Ferrell simply had their way with the Pelicans.

Framber Valdez had a weird, but alright outing. He went 4 innings and allowed 2 unearned runs. a single, walked 4, and struck out 6 in 4 innings. Myrtle Beach scored their first run on a wild pitch in the 1st and the other run scored following a poor throw from Osvaldo Duarte in the 4th. Quiala allowed just one hit and struck out 8 in his 4 innings; he struck out two in every inning. Ferrell struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 9th to earn the save.

Both teams scored a run in the 1st and the 4th innings; Christian Correa put the Astros on the board with an RBI double in the 1st and Ryne Birk added an RBI single in the 4th. Johnny Sewald doubled to lead off the 5th and scored on a Jason Martin single. Birk also stole his 2nd base of the season.

Elieser Hernandez will take on Adbert Alzolay in game 2 of this series. First pitch is at 7:00 Eastern.

Quad Cities and Peoria was postponed

Due to rain. A doubleheader is scheduled for today with the first game starting at 5:00. Forrest Whitley will start it off against Steven Farinaro, and in game 2, Hector Perez will face John Kilichowski,

Meet the 2017 Fresno Grizzlies

The Fresno Grizzlies enter their third season as the Houston Astros' Triple-A affiliate. The Grizzlies were previously known as the Tucson Toros, which was affiliated with the Astros from 1980 to 1997. When Phoenix was awarded a Major League Baseball franchise in 1998, the Phoenix Firebirds, which was the Giants' AAA club, was forced to move, and they moved to Tucson and became a D-Backs affiliate. The Toros moved to Fresno and became a Giants farm club until 2015.

The Grizzlies play in the Northern division of the Pacific Coast League's Pacific Conference. The other teams in their division are Reno (D-Backs), Sacramento (Giants), and Tacoma (Mariners). Their home stadium, Chukchansi Park, has been in operation since 2002.

Every Tuesday home game, the Grizzlies will assume their alter ego, the Fresno Tacos. I would strongly advise that you get one of those hats.

Tony DeFrancesco will enter his 14th season as a manager at the AAA level. He was also the Astros' interim manager in 2012, following the firing of Brad Mills. New hitting coach Darryl Robinson spent the last eight seasons with Lancaster.

Fresno has quite a few prospects who have major league experience, such as A.J. Reed, Colin Moran, and Teoscar Hernandez. Even more players are on the cusp; for example, Francis Martes is just one phone call away from Houston. Reymin Guduan and James Hoyt pack serious heat, and Jordan Jankowski has also shown to be incredibly adept at getting the strikeout. It is also a homecoming of sorts for Tyson Perez, who grew up in nearby Hanford, California and played at Fresno City College before the Astros drafted him.

Fresno will kick off its 2017 season at home against the Reno Aces. Collin McHugh will get the start in a rehab assignment. First pitch is at 7:05 Pacific.

The Orange team got a pair of runs in the 6th to break a 3-3 tie.

Euclides Chavez scored the first run of the game in the 2nd inning on an error following a Kelvin Perez single. The Orange team got two runs in the 3rd on a pair of RBI singles from Jose Abel Hernandez and Chavez. Jose Carrillo scored the go-ahead run on a balk in the 6th, and Samir Caraballo, who was at the plate at the time, added an RBI single. Caraballo, Chavez, Carrillo, and Hector Martinez all had 2 hits on the day.

Gerardo Bojorquez went 3 innings and allowed 3 runs on 5 hits (2 solo homers), walked 1, and struck out 2. Christian Mejias allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 1 over 2 scoreless, and Diosward Gonzalez allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 6 over 4 scoreless for the save.

Results for Saturday, August 20, 2016

Everyone lost.

Albuquerque 7, Fresno 2

W- Eddie Butler (7-2)
L- David Paulino (0-1, 5-3 season)

Fresno home runs: D.J. Fisher (3, 19 season; solo in 2nd)

David Paulino was given a rather rude welcome to the Pacific Coast League. The Grizzlies fell behind 6-1 and never really threatened the Isotopes in this one.

D.J. Fisher opened the scoring with a solo homer in the 2nd inning. Fresno's other scoring play came in the 6th, when Jon Kemmer ripped an RBI double. Kemmer finished 2-4 on the night.

Paulino went 4 innings and allowed 6 runs (4 earned) on 7 hits (solo homer), walked 2, and struck out 7. Reymin Guduan was the first man out of the Fresno bullpen, and in 3 scoreless innings, he allowed 2 hits and struck out 1. Brendan McCurry allowed a run on 2 hits and struck out the side in the 8th.

Evan Grills will make his AAA debut in game 2 of this series. First pitch is at 6:05 Mountain.

Arkansas 4, Corpus Christi 2

W- Eric Alonzo (2-1)
L- Francis Martes (8-5)
S- Eduardo Paredes (5)

CC home runs: None.

The Hooks scored first, but they couldn't get any more runs across.

J.D. Davis ripped a 2-run double in the 1st that turned out to be the Hooks' only scoring play of the night. Ramon Laureano, who scored one of the runs, finished 2-3 with a stolen base (5, 38 season).

Francis Martes went 7 innings and allowed 3 runs on 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 7. Albert Minnis allowed a run on 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1 in the 8th.

In the series finale, Rogelio Armenteros will make his Texas League debut. He'll face Zach Nuding at 6:10.

Lake Elsinore 2, Lancaster 1

W- Zech Lemond (6-4)
L- Scott Weathersby (5-6, 6-6 season)
S- Phil Maton (9)

Lancaster home runs: None.

The JetHawks' bats went quiet on Saturday night. They managed to tie the game in the 7th, only to see the Storm retake the lead in the 8th.

Bryan Muñiz led off the 7th with a double, advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch, and scored Lancaster's only run on a sac fly from Osvaldo Duarte. The double was their only extra-base hit of the night; Trent Woodward and Jason Martin had singles, which were their other two hits in the game.

Elieser Hernandez and Scott Weathersby pitched 4 innings apiece; Hernandez allowed a run on 5 hits, walked 3, and struck out 6, while Weathersby allowed a run on 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4.

The JetHawks will look to avoid the sweep as Dean Deetz gets the start. He'll take on Enyel De Los Santos at 5:00 Pacific.

Kane County 4, Quad Cities 2

W- Emilio Vargas (4-6)
L- Enrique Chavez (0-1, 3-3 season)
S- Austin Mason (1)

QC home runs: None.

For 8 innings, the Banditos' offense was rendered useless by Emilio Vargas, who struck out 17 for the Cougars. They finally got to him in the 9th, but the rally fell short.

Jake Rogers tripled to lead off the bottom of the 9th and scored Quad Cities' first run on an error that allowed Bobby Wernes to reach. Wernes advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch and scored on a Dex McCall single. Rogers had 2 of the River Bandits' 3 hits on the evening.

In his Quad Cities debut, Enrique Chavez went 4 innings and allowed 3 runs on 6 hits (2-run homer), walked 2, and struck out 4. Nick Hernandez was also making his Quad Cities debut, and he allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 1 in 2 innings. Zac Person allowed a run on 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 4 in 3 innings.

Yoanys Quiala will start the series finale, and he'll take on Carlos Hernandez at 1:15.

Hudson Valley 4, Tri-City 3

W- Porter Clayton (3-1)
L- Austin Nicely (5-3)
S- Joe Serrapica (7)

TC home runs: None.

The Renegades' two 2-run innings trumped the ValleyCats' one-run and 2-run innings. Tri-City had the tying run on base in the 9th, but Gabriel Bracamonte grounded into the game-ending double play.

Chuckie Robinson opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 1st inning. Both teams scored two in the 5th; the ValleyCats' two runs came home thanks to an RBI double from Miguelangel Sierra and an RBI single from Brauly Mejia. Sierra finished 3-4 on the night, and Mejia went 2-4.

Austin Nicely allowed 4 runs (1 inherited runner charged to him) on 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2 in 4.1 innings. In his Tri-City debut, Devin Raftery went 1.2 innings, allowing 3 hits and striking out 4. Ryan Hartman pitched the final 3 innings and allowed 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 4.

Sebastian Kessay will start game 2 of this series. First pitch is at 5:00 Eastern.

Danville 7, Greeneville 4

W- Jeremy Walker (3-1)
L- Cristian Javier (1-1, 4-2 season)

Greeneville home runs: None.

The Appy Astros fell behind 6-1 as they dropped the series.

Cristian Javier went 4 innings and allowed 3 runs on 5 hits (solo homer) and struck out 4. Ben Smith and Carson LaRue pitched 2 innings apiece; Smith allowed 4 runs on 5 hits, walked 2, and struck out 1, while LaRue struck out 3.

Connor MacDonald finished 3-4 with a double, and he scored Greeneville's first run of the game on a single from Ruben Castro in the 5th inning. Reiny Beltre hit an RBI groundout in the 6th. Abraham Toro grounded into a force out that allowed Stijn van der Meer to score in the 8th, and Luis Payano hit a sac fly in the 9th. Castro finished 2-4 on the evening.

Greeneville will begin a 3-game series in Burlington tonight at 6:00 Eastern. Jorge Guzman will get the start.

GCL Mets 7, GCL Astros 2

W- Ronald Sanchez (1-2)
L- Bryan Abreu (1-4, 1-5 season)

GCL home runs: None.

The Kissimmee Stros scored first, but it was all Mets afterwards. I believe that the GCL Astros have been eliminated from playoff contention with this loss.

Jose Benjamin opened the scoring with an RBI triple in the 1st, and one batter later, Bernardo Heras brought him home with a single. Heras finished 2-3 on the day.

Bryan Abreu went 4 innings and allowed 5 runs on 6 hits, walked 3, and struck out 3. Juan Robles was the first man out of the bullpen, and he allowed 2 unearned runs on 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2 in 2.2 innings. Saul Martinez allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 3 in 1.1 innings.

DSL Rays1 10, DSL Astros Blue 5

W- Ender Cespedes (1-0)
L- Jesus Bernaez (1-4)

Blue home runs: None.

The Rays buried the Blue team with a 5-run 5th inning.

Angel De Leon opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 1st. He went 2-5, with his other hit being a double. Nestor Tejada followed with an RBI single. Ronny Jimenez hit a sac fly in the 5th, and in the 6th, Alfredo Angarita hit a sac fly and Ronny Rafael scored on a wild pitch.

Juan Corniel went 4 innings and allowed 3 runs on 3 hits, walked 3, and struck out 5. Jesus Bernaez got shelled in his 2 innings; he allowed 7 runs on 6 hits (2-run homer), walked 2, and struck out 3. Yeremi Ceballos allowed a hit and hit a batter in a scoreless 7th, and Jean Reyes walked 1 and struck out 1 in a scoreless 8th.

DSL Phillies2 2, DSL Astros Orange 1

W- Reiwal Gonzalez (3-1)
L- Asael Uribe (3-4)
S- Luis Ramirez (11)

Orange home runs: None.

All of the scoring in this game was done in the 8th inning. However, the Phillies' half-inning was more productive than the Orange team's.

Samir Caraballo's RBI single in the 8th was the Orange team's only scoring play of the game. Yordan Alvarez and Yeuris Ramirez had 2 hits apiece.

Maikel Sepulveda allowed 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3 over 6 shutout innings. Asael Uribe pitched the final 3 innings and allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3.

Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Sunday, August 7, 2016

Fresno 3, El Paso 1 in 10 innings

W- Jordan Jankowski (2-2)
L- Derek Eitel (4-1)
S- Jandel Gustave (3)

Fresno home runs: Colin Moran (8, 2-run in 10th)

Colin Moran's 2-run home run in the first extra frame made him the hero on Sunday. The top third of the Fresno lineup accounted for all 7 hits; Moran picked an ideal time to get his first hit of the evening, while Jon Kemmer and Danny Worth had 3 hits apiece and stole a base. Kemmer stole home in the 4th inning to put the Grizzlies on the board first.

Mike Hauschild allowed 4 hits, walked 3, and struck out 5 over 6.2 shutout innings. Kevin Chapman got the final out of the 7th and the first two outs of the 8th; he allowed a hit and walked 1. El Paso scored the tying run on Jordan Jankowski in the 9th inning; Jankowski went 1.1 innings and also allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2. Jandel Gustave walked 1 in the 10th inning, but he was able to close it out.

In game 2 of this series, Brad Peacock will face Frank Garces. First pitch is at 7:05 Mountain.

Corpus Christi 3, Midland 1

W- Francis Martes (8-4)
L- Daniel Gossett (3-5)
S- Jacob Dorris (1, 11 season)

CC home runs: None.

The Hooks earned the split thanks to fine start from Francis Martes.

Martes allowed a run on 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 7 in 7 innings of work. In his Hooks debut, Jacob Dorris pitched the final two innings and got the save, allowing a hit, walking 1, and striking out 3.

Chase McDonald opened up the scoring with an RBI double in the 2nd inning. He finished 3-4 on the day and added an RBI single to his ledger in the 4th. In the 7th, McDonald scored on a single from Tony Nuñez. Conrad Gregor scored 2 of Corpus Christi's 3 runs in this game.

The Hooks have today off; they'll begin a 3-game series with the Northwest Arkansas Naturals tomorrow.

Modesto 12, Lancaster 10

W- Helmis Rodriguez (3-8)
L- Brock Dyhxhoorn (7-4)
S- Luis Niebla (9)

Lancaster home runs: Yulieski Gurriel (1, grand slam in 6th), Jason Martin (18, 2-run in 7th), Osvaldo Duarte (5, 8 season; solo in 8th)

The JetHawks were foiled in their attempt to sweep the series as the Nuts jumped out to a 10-1 lead. To Lancaster's credit, they fought back and nearly erased this deficit, but it proved to be too much to overcome.

All of the JetHawks' runs in this game were driven in by Osvaldo Duarte, Yulieski Gurriel, and Jason Martin. Gurriel opened the scoring with an RBI double in the 1st inning. Martin hit a sac fly in the 6th. Later in the inning, Duarte drew a bases-loaded walk, and Gurriel followed with a grand slam, his first home run in American baseball. Martin launched a 2-run home run in the 7th, and Duarte led off the 8th with a home run.

In his final game before heading to Corpus Christi, Gurriel finished 2-4. Johnny Sewald, Duarte, and Drew Ferguson scored 2 runs apiece. Ferguson and Trent Woodward also finished the game with 2 hits.

It was not the greatest day at the office for Brock Dykxhoorn, and I will leave it at that. Fortunately, his line of work allows him to have a fresh start every time he steps on the mound. He's a good pitcher, and he'll bounce back. Alex Winkelman was the first man out, and in 1.1 innings, he allowed 2 runs on 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 1. Kevin McCanna allowed a hit and struck out 2 over 2.2 scoreless.

The JetHawks will begin a 3-game series in Inland Empire on Tuesday.

Quad Cities 2, Burlington 1 in 10 innings

W- Juan Carlos Santos (1-0, 2-1 season)
L- Andrew Vinson (0-2)

QC home runs: None.

Kyle Tucker sent the River Bandits fans home happy with a walk-off single in the first extra frame. Little Tuck, who finished 3-5, also tripled in the 6th inning and wound up scoring the Banditos' first run of the day on a Randy César single. Dex McCall finished 2-5; he doubled to lead off the 10th and scored the winning run. César and Kristian Trompiz also had 2 hits on the day.

Albert Abreu went 5 innings and allowed a run on 4 hits, walked 3, and struck out 6. Franklin Perez tagged in to throw 4 scoreless innings, allowing 3 hits and fanning 4. Juan Carlos Santos threw a 1-2-3 10th inning, striking out 1.

Yoanys Quiala will start game 3 of this series. He'll face Luis Peña at 7:00.

Tri-City 18, Brooklyn 4

W- Ryan Hartman (2-0)
L- Erik Manoah (5-2)
S- Tyler Britton (1)

TC home runs: Spencer Johnson (4, 6 season; 2-run in 5th)

The ValleyCats stormed out to an 8-0 lead after the 1st inning and wound up setting a franchise record for runs in a single game.

- Spencer Johnson now has 30 home runs in this calendar year; he led Division I with 24 home runs at Missouri State this past season, and he's added 6 more between Greeneville and Tri-City.
- Every position player who appeared for the ValleyCats had a hit and scored a run.

Kevin Hill, Ryan Hartman, and Tyler Britton pitched 3 innings apiece. Hill got the start and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1. Hartman allowed a run on 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2, and Britton allowed an unearned run on 2 hits and fanned 4.

Austin Nicely will take the mound as the ValleyCats look for the sweep. First pitch is at 7:00 Eastern.

Pulaski 8, Greeneville 7

W- Miles Chambers (2-1)
L- Luis Ramirez (0-1, 2-2 season)
Greeneville home runs: Jonathan Arauz (2, solo in 4th)

The Yankees scored 4 in the 6th to take a 6-4 lead. The Appy Astros responded with 3 in the 7th to take the lead, but Pulaski tied in the 8th and walked off with the win in the 9th.

Jonathan Arauz led off the 4th inning with a home run to put Greeneville on the scoreboard. In the 5th, Vicente Sanchez hit an RBI single and Jonathan Matute drew a bases-loaded walk. Oscar Campos hit an RBI single in the 6th. Frankeny Fernandez, who scored on Campos' single, hit a 2-run single in the 7th and came around to score on a single from Reiny Beltre. Arauz and Beltre had 2 hits apiece.

Nathan Thompson only got 2 outs in the first inning, both by strikeout. He also allowed 2 runs on 2 hits and walked 2. Lucas Williams got the final out of the 1st inning and proceeded to throw 3 scoreless, allowing a hit and striking out 2. Salvador Montaño went 1.1 innings and allowed 4 runs on 3 hits, walked 4, and struck out 1, Luis Ramirez pitched 3 innings and allowed 2 runs on 2 hits (solo homer), walked 1, and struck out 2. Reggie Johnson came on with 1 out in the 9th, and he walked a batter and uncorked a wild pitch that resulted in the winning run for Pulaski.

Jorge Alcala will start game 2 of this series. First pitch is at 7:00 Eastern.

GCL Cardinals 2, GCL Astros 0 in 5 innings

W- Franyel Casadilla (3-2)
L- Juan Robles (1-1)

GCL home runs: None.

This game was called due to rain.

Edgar Lorenzo, Randy Vasquez, and Juan Piñeda hit singles on offense.

Juan Robles allowed 2 runs on 6 hits (solo homer) and struck out 3 in 5 innings. Lupe Chavez came on for the 6th and walked the only batter he faced before the rain came.

Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Monday, August 1, 2016 and Tuesday, August 2, 2016

They played two in Troy on Monday and two in the GCL on Tuesday.

Monday: Fresno 7, Reno 3

W- Edison Frias (1-1, 5-2 season)
L- Anthony Banda (3-3)

Fresno home runs: A.J. Reed (15, 2-run in 1st), Jon Kemmer (10, 2-run in 8th)

Looks like A.J. Reed is back to being A.J. Reed; he finished 3-4 and opened up the scoring with a 2-run home run in the 1st inning. The Aces tied the game in the bottom of the 1st, but Fresno finished the game on a 5-1 run.

Nolan Fontana led off the 3rd with a double, advanced to 3rd on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a wild pitch. Tony Kemp drew a bases-loaded walk in the 4th inning. Jon Kemmer has gotten his bat going in the second half as well; he clubbed a 2-run home run in the 8th inning, his 10th homer of the year. Reed capped off the night with an RBI double in the 9th. Kemmer and Jon Singleton both finished 2-4 on the night.

Edison Frias went 6 innings and allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, walked 3, and struck out 2. Kevin Chapman pitched 2 innings, and the one run he allowed came on a home run hit by Carlos Rivero. Chapman allowed one other hit, walked 2, and struck out 4. James Hoyt recorded a strikeout in a 1-2-3 9th inning.

Tuesday: Fresno 4, Reno 1

W- Mike Hauschild (8-9)
L- Matt Koch (0-1)
S- Jandel Gustave (2)

Fresno home runs: Jon Kemmer (11, solo in 6th), Andrew Aplin (5, solo in 9th)

The Grizzlies got a nice outing from Mike Hauschild to take 3 of 4 from the Aces.

Hauschild allowed a run on 4 hits, walked 3, and struck out 2 in 7 innings of work. Brendan McCurry and Jandel Gustave both pitched a scoreless inning; McCurry worked around 2 hits to throw a scoreless 8th, striking out 2, and Gustave worked around an error to get the save, striking out the side in the 9th.

Nolan Fontana scored Fresno's first run on a double play in the 3rd inning, which tied the game at 1. Jon Kemmer launched a solo home run in the 6th to put the Grizz in front. Tyler Heineman hit an RBI single in the 7th, and Andrew Aplin capped off the scoring with a solo homer in the 9th inning. Aplin (solo HR, 2 R) and Fontana (2B, R) had 2 hits apiece, while Heineman finished 3-4.

The next leg of the Grizzlies' roadtrip will take them to Las Vegas, where they'll play 5 games; there will be a doubleheader on Thursday. In game 1 of this series, Brad Peacock will face Duane Below. First pitch is at 7:05 Pacific.

Monday: Corpus Christi 7, San Antonio 4

W- Trent Thornton (1-0, 8-4 season)
L- Tim Berry (0-3)
S- Aaron West (14)

CC home runs: Alejandro Garcia (3, 2-run in 5th), Garrett Stubbs (2, 8 season; solo in 7th), Chase McDonald (14, solo in 8th)

The Hooks erupted for 5 runs in the 5th inning to seize control of this one.

Trent Thornton turned in 6 solid innings on the mound for Corpus; the one run he allowed came on a solo homer hit by Rocky Gale in the 5th. Thornton allowed 6 other hits and struck out 7 in his outing. In his Texas League debut, Kevin Comer went 2 innings and allowed 3 runs, all of which scored on two home runs, which happened to be all the hits he allowed. He also walked 1 and struck out 1. Aaron West struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 9th to get the save.

Chase McDonald walked to lead off the bottom of the 5th, and one batter later, Alejandro Garcia put Corpus on the board and in the lead with a 2-run homer. Later in the inning, J.D. Davis ripped a 2-run double and came around to score on a D.J. Fisher single. Garrett Stubbs whacked a solo homer in the 7th, and McDonald capped off the evening with a solo homer in the 8th.

Stubbs (solo HR, 2 R), Davis (2 2B, 2 RBI, R, SB), Mott Hyde, and Tony Nuñez all finished 2-4 in the game. The stolen base was Davis' first of the season.

Tuesday: Corpus Christi 4, San Antonio 2

W- Francis Martes (7-4)
L- Elier Sanchez (0-1)
S- Aaron West (15)

CC home runs: None.

Both teams only had one scoring inning, but the Hooks had the bigger inning. They also got a dominating start from Francis Martes on Tuesday.

The two runs that Martes allowed in his 6.1 innings came on a home run hit by Josh VanMeter in the 7th inning, which was a mildly disappointing ending to an otherwise excellent night. Martes allowed 4 other hits, walked 1, and struck out a career-high 12. Ryan Thompson came on and allowed a hit over 1.2 scoreless. Aaron West threw a 1-2-3 9th to record his 15th save.

All 4 Hooks runs came in the 2nd inning. Mott Hyde opened the scoring with an RBI single. Ramon Laureano hit a pop-fly single to load the bases, and Garrett Stubbs followed by drawing a walk to bring in another run. Nick Tanielu later added a 2-run single. Tanielu, Hyde, Laureano, and James Ramsay all finished with 2 hits on the night.

The Hooks will look for the sweep tonight as Evan Grills takes the mound. He'll face Dinelson Lamet at 7:05.

Monday: Lancaster 7, Lake Elsinore 6

W- Scott Weathersby (5-5, 6-5 season)
L- Gerardo Reyes (0-2)
S- Jacob Dorris (9)

Lancaster home runs: Bobby Boyd (9, 3-run in 7th)

The JetHawks only scored in one inning on Monday, but they made sure to score enough in order to get the victory. That one big inning was the 7th, and the JetHawks scored all 7 of their runs in that one frame.

Drew Ferguson kicked things off with a single. He advanced to 2nd on a Trent Woodward groundout and scored Lancaster's first run on an Osvaldo Duarte single. Aaron Mizell followed by laying down a bunt single, and on the ensuing error, he advanced to 2nd, while Duarte scored. Jamie Ritchie followed by drawing a walk. A passed ball allowed Mizell and Ritchie to advance. Marc Wik, who was hitting at the time, walked to load the bases. Brooks Marlow followed with a 2-run double, but Wik was thrown out at the plate for the second out of the inning. Johnny Sewald drew a walk, which prompted a Lake Elsinore pitching change. After Sewald stole 2nd (19, 35 season), Boyd put the finishing touches on the huge inning with a 3-run home run. Duarte finished 3-4 and was the only player in the Lancaster lineup with a multi-hit game.

Brock Dykxhoorn went 4.1 innings and allowed 3 runs on 6 hits (2 solo homers), walked 3, and struck out 5. Scott Weathersby tagged in for 3.2 innings, and the one run he allowed came on a solo homer hit by Ty France in the 7th. He allowed 2 other hits, walked 1, and struck out 3. Jacob Dorris allowed a 2-run homer to Fernando Perez in the 9th which cut the Lancaster lead to one run, but he pulled himself together to get the final two outs of the game. The homer was the only hit that Dorris allowed in the inning, and only one of the runs was earned. He also struck out one.

Tuesday: Lake Elsinore 10, Lancaster 9 in 12 innings

W- Martires Arias (2-4)
L- Alex Winkelman (0-3, 5-5 season)

Lancaster home runs: Osvaldo Duarte (3, 6 season. 2-run in 2nd)

The JetHawks saw a 7-1 lead vanish, and then they had to mount a rally that ultimately fell short.

Bryan Muñiz put Lancaster on the board and in the lead with a 2-run double in the 1st inning. The JetHawks scored 4 runs in the 2nd inning; Osvaldo Duarte whacked a 2-run homer, Yulieski Gurriel ripped an RBI double, and Muñiz added a sac fly. Keach Ballard added an RBI single in the 3rd inning. This would be their last scoring play until the 12th; in the meantime, the Storm scored 3 runs in 3 separate innings to take a 10-7 lead. The JetHawks got a pair of RBI singles from Jamie Ritchie and Osvaldo Duarte to cut the deficit to one run, but Ballard and Johnny Sewald went down on strikes to end the game. Ritchie (RBI, 2 R), Duarte (2-R HR, 3 RBI, SB), and Drew Ferguson all had 2 hits, while Gurriel finished 3-4 with the RBI double and scored a run.

Josh James went 4 innings and allowed 6 runs (2 inherited runners charged to him) on 5 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3. Ryan Deemes tagged in for 3 innings and allowed a run on 4 hits (3-run homer; 2 runs were charged to James) and struck out 4. Andrew Thome allowed 2 hits over 3.1 scoreless innings, and Alex Winkelman allowed 3 runs on 3 hits and walked 2 in 1.2 innings.

Rogelio Armenteros will start the series finale. He'll face Jerry Keel at 11:05 AM Pacific.

Monday: Beloit 5, Quad Cities 4 in 10 innings

W- Jared Lyons (5-3)
L- David Schmidt (2-2, 3-3 season)

QC home runs: None.
