ROSTER MOVES/TRANSACTIONS

Again, nothing exciting happening this past week. The only Astros-related transaction I've seen is that free agent Reid Brignac, former Fresno Grizzlies infielder, signed a minor league deal with the Nationals.

You can check the cumulative Astros offseason transaction list here to see if you've missed any of the posted moves this offseason.

NEWS AND LINKS

Forgot to post this last week. Do you prefer Woodpeckers or Fatbacks?

Another name change, but this one is temporary. The Corpus Christi Hooks will become the Blue Ghosts for one weekend in June.

In case you missed it, I've been gathering the Astros Top Prospect info in one place and will put together a consensus list when everyone has weighed in. Updated with Baseball America's Top 30 going into 2018.

Here is the Astros Spring Training broadcast schedule. Yes, Astros baseball will be available on your radio and/or TV starting this Friday!!!

Lefty Brett Adcock is ready for the coming season. h/t to Sam Levitt

Thomas Eshelman, an under-the-radar piece of the Ken Giles trade to the Phillies, is ready for his close up.

And one last non-baseball item. High-fives to the Shibutani duo!

In case you missed it, I started a "Beyond the Top 30" series, looking at both those Astros players who are considered Top 30 prospects and others at each position who may not be top talents (or may grow to be), but will be interesting to watch nonetheless. So far we've looked at ...

Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Wednesday, June 28, 2017

Let's play two in Connecticut!

Fresno 8, Albuquerque 5

W- Trent Thornton (5-2, 6-4 season)
L- Barry Enright (4-2)
S- Kevin Comer (3)

Fresno home runs: Reid Brignac (8, 2-run in 2nd)

The Grizzlies stormed out to a 7-1 lead after the first 3 innings. Albuquerque managed to cut into that lead and got to within two runs, but the early cushion was enough to get them the win.

D.J. Fisher put Fresno on the board with an RBI triple in the 1st inning. One batter later, Colin Moran ripped a double to bring him home. Reid Brignac launched a 2-run homer in the 2nd, and in the 3rd, Max Stassi hit an RBI single and Alejandro Garcia added a 2-run single. Moran tripled to lead off the 8th and scored on a Teoscar Hernandez single. Moran went 3-3 on the night, while Brignac finished 2-3.

Trent Thornton went 5 innings and allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4. The one hit that Brendan McCurry allowed in his 2 innings of work was a solo homer to Ryan McMahon in the 7th. McCurry also struck out 4. Dayan Diaz and Kevin Comer allowed a hit and struck out 2 in a scoreless 8th and 9th, respectively.

Joe Musgrove looks to right the ship in his return to Fresno. He'll take on Sam Howard as Fresno concludes its homestand at 7:05 Pacific.

Corpus Christi was off

The Hooks kick off the post-All-Star Game portion of their schedule with a tour of Arkansas. Kent Emanuel gets the start in the first game of a 3-game set with Northwest Arkansas and he'll face Emilio Ogando at 7:05.

Buies Creek 2, Carolina 1

W- Framber Valdez (2-3, 2-4 season)
L- Kodi Medeiros (3-6)
S- Ralph Garza Jr. (3)

BC home runs: None.

Yordan Alvarez was the offense, and Framber Valdez dominated on the hill for the Carolia Stros.

Framber pitched a career-best 8 innings and allowed a run on 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out a career-high 11. Ralph Garza struck out 2 in a scoreless 9th to get the save; an error allowed Lucas Erceg to reach. Garza also uncorked a couple of wild pitches that allowed Erceg to move to 3rd, but he punched out Isan Diaz to end the game. I didn't mean punch out in the Rougned Odor sense of the term; he struck out Diaz.

Alvarez drew a bases-loaded walk in the 3rd and ripped an RBI double in the 5th to put Buies Creek in front. Anibal Sierra was the only man on either side with a multi-hit game, going 2-4 with a run scored.

Justin Ferrell gets the start in the series finale. He'll take on La Grange native Trey Supak at 7:00 Eastern.

Wisconsin 3, Quad Cities 2 in 13 innings

W- Daniel Brown (3-1)
L- Dustin Hunt (0-6)

QC home runs: None.

The Banditos tied the game in the 8th and took the lead in the 11th, but the Timber Rattlers hit back for a run of their own in the bottom of the 11th and wound up walking off with the win.

Forrest Whitley pitched 5.1 innings and allowed an unearned run on 4 hits, walked 4, and struck out 6. Kevin Hill struck out 4 over 3.2 scoreless; one runner reached on an error in the 8th. Dustin Hunt went 3.1 innings and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits, walked 4 (1 intentionally), and struck out 3.

Wander Franco put Quad Cities on the board with an RBI single in the 8th inning. Ronnie Dawson got plunked to begin the 11th, and Bryan De La Cruz drew a 1-out walk to join him on the bases. Dawson proceeded to steal 3rd (8) and scored on a wild pitch. Franco finished 2-5 on the night.

Quad Cities and Wisconsin will finish up this series at 7:05 as Carlos Sanabria faces Thomas Jankins.

Game 1: Connecticut 3, Tri-City 1

W- Jose Vasquez (1-0)
L- Ricardo Castro (1-1)
S- Wladimir Pinto (1)

TC home runs: None.

Both teams scored in the same inning in game 1. The Tigers, however, scored more in their half.

The only two Tri-City hits in game 1 were singles from Kristian Trompiz and Randy Vasquez; Trompiz scored the ValleyCats' only run when Andy Piñeda grounded into a double play.

Ricardo Castro went 5 innings and allowed 3 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits, walked 3, and struck out 4. Ben Smith worked around a couple of walks to throw a scoreless 6th, striking out 2.

Game 2: Connecticut 10, Tri-City 3

W- Brandyn Sittinger (1-0)
L- Luis Ramirez (0-1)

TC home runs: None.

The Tigers busted game 2 open with 3 in the 4th and 4 more in the 5th to sweep the twinbill.

Tri-City scored a run in each of the first three innings: Jake Adams opened the scoring with a sac fly in the 1st, Connor MacDonald scored on an error in the 2nd, and J.J. Matijevic hit an RBI single in the 3rd. Matijevic went 3-4 in game 2. Corey Julks was 2-2 with 2 walks, 2 runs scored, and a stolen base (3).

Tri-City's pitchers.... had a rough time in game 2. Honestly, that's really all that needs to be said. Brush it off and try again, guys.

Game 3 of the series starts at 7:05 Eastern.

Johnson City 6, Greeneville 3

W- Jake Walsh (1-0)
L- Tim Hardy (0-1)
S- Jacob Patterson (1)

Greeneville home runs: Roman Garcia (1, 2-run in 6th)

The Appy Astros' bats were stuck in the mud on Wednesday.

Roman Garcia launched a 2-run homer in the 6th, his first as a professional. Martin Figueroa hit an RBI single in the 8th. Gilberto Celestino finished 2-3 with a stolen base (2). Chas McCormick went 2-4 and has a hit in each of his first 4 games as a pro.

Tim Hardy allowed a run on 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1 in 2 innings. Adam Bleday was the first man out of the Greeneville bullpen and went 1.1 innings, allowing 3 runs (1 inherited runner charged to him) on 5 hits. Bryan Abreu was next, and he allowed 2 runs on 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 5 in 4 innings. Dariel Aquino walked 1 and got the last two outs of the 8th.

Noel Pinto faces Edwar Martinez in game 2 of this series. First pitch is at 7:00 Eastern.

DSL Marlins 11, DSL Astros Blue 2

W- Eliezer Rodriguez (1-1)
L- Denilson Lugo (0-1)

Blue home runs: None.

Well, at least they didn't get shut out.

Rhandall Sanchez spoiled the shutout with an RBI single in the 9th. Yorbin Ceuta went 2-3 and scored on a wild pitch soon after Sanchez put the Blue team on the board.

Denilson Lugo went 3.2 innings and allowed 4 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3. Bryan Solano allowed 2 unearned runs, a hit, walked 2, and struck out 2 in 1.2 innings, and Jervic Chavez went 2.2 innings, allowing 5 runs (4 earned) on 4 hits, walking 1, and striking out 1.

DSL Cubs1 19, DSL Astros Orange 8

W- Keiber Arredondo (1-1)
L- Jesus Bernaez (1-2)

Orange home runs: Renaigel Martis (1, solo in 5th)

Maybe that 8-run 9th from the Cubs 1 on Tuesday was a sign of bad tidings to come for Team Orange.

Gerry Castillo ripped an RBI double in the 5th and cleared the bases with another double in the 6th. Jose Carrillo finished 3-5 and hit an RBI single in the 5th. Deury Carrasco and Luis Barajas also finished with 2 hits on the day.

Team Orange's pitchers struggled. I think I'll just leave it at that. Kelvin Perez, who is normally a catcher, worked out of a bases-loaded situation to throw a scoreless 9th, striking out 1.

Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Sunday, May 21, 2017

Fresno 9, Memphis 3

W- Casey Coleman (2-2)
L- Artie Reyes (5-2)

Fresno home runs: Colin Moran (7, 3-run in 6th)

Both sides pounded out 10 hits, but Fresno's 10 were more impactful.

Reid Brignac put Fresno on the board with an RBI single in the 2nd and Andrew Aplin put them in front with a sac fly. Brignac struck again in the 4th with an RBI double. Teoscar Hernandez scored on a D.J. Fisher groundout in the 5th, and Colin Moran delivered the big blow in the 6th when he launched a 3-run homer. Jon Kemmer capped off the day with an RBI double in the 7th. Brignac finished 4-4 with 3 doubles, while Moran's blast extended his hitting streak to 9 games.

Casey Coleman allowed a solo homer to Nick Martini in the 1st and then proceeded to keep Memphis off the scoreboard for the last four innings of his outing. He allowed 4 other hits, walked 3, and struck out 5. Kevin Comer and Aaron West both pitched 2 innings out of the bullpen; Comer was first and he allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits and fanned 1. West allowed a hit and struck out 2.

David Martinez will start the series finale and he'll take on John Gant at 11:05 AM Pacific.

Corpus Christi 5, Frisco 0

W- Akeem Bostick (2-1, 3-2 season)
L- David Ledbetter (1-1)

CC home runs: None.

The Hooks have gone 6-3 following a 10-game losing streak earlier this month. Akeem Bostick acquitted himself well in his Texas League debut against his old teammates in the Arlington system. In his first outing since coming off the disabled list, he shut the Roughriders down.

Bostick allowed 3 hits, walked 1, and fanned 3 over 6 shutout innings. Sean Stutzman and Albert Minnis completed the shutout; Stutzman allowed a hit and struck out 2, while Minnis worked around a hit in the 9th, getting two groundouts and a flyball out.

J.D. Davis led off the 4th with a double and scored the first run of the day on a sac fly from Bobby Boyd. Garrett Stubbs went 3-4 with a 2-run single in the 5th and scored on Davis's second double in the 7th inning. Tony Nuñez scored the final run of the afternoon when Jack Mayfield grounded into a double play. He, Kristian Trompiz, Drew Ferguson (R, 3 BB), and Davis all finished with two hits. Ferguson extended his hitting streak to 18 games, which is now the longest in the system this year.

Corpus and Frisco will wrap up this series at 11:05 AM. Kyle Smith will face Yohander Mendez.

Down East 6, Buies Creek 1

W- Pedro Payano (2-2)
L- Justin Ferrell (3-3)

BC home runs: None.

All of Buies Creek's offensive production occurred in the first inning. Unfortunately, the Wood Ducks scored in each of the first three innings.

Jason Martin singled to lead off the game and scored the only run on Randy César's RBI single. Those were the Astros' only two hits of the day.

Justin Ferrell went 2.2 innings and allowed 6 runs on 7 hits (2-run homer) and struck out 1. The bullpen stopped the bleeding and turned in 5.1 scoreless innings. Ralph Garza Jr. allowed 2 hits and struck out 1 in 3.1 innings, and Howie Brey allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 1 over the final two frames.

Hector Perez will start the series finale against Jeff Springs. First pitch is at 7:00 Eastern.

Quad Cities 15, Kane County 8

W- Carson LaRue (5-1)
L- Sam McWilliams (4-2)

QC home runs: Rodrigo Ayarza 2 (7; 3-run in 1st, 2-run in 9th), Wander Franco (1, 2-run in 5th), Osvaldo Duarte (1, 3-run in 6th)

The Banditos busted out of their slump in a massive way as they launched 4 homers and everyone played a part in the onslaught.

It didn't take long for Quad Cities to break their 31-inning scoreless streak as Rodrigo Ayarza whacked a 3-run homer, his first of the day.

Prior to this season, Ayarza hit 7 home runs in 228 career games. In 30 games this season, he has 7. His rise has certainly been one of the stories in the system this season.

Carson LaRue went 5 innings and the two runs he allowed came on a homer hit by Ramon Hernandez in the 4th. He allowed three other hits, walked 2, and struck out 4. Dustin Hunt was the first man out of the Quad Cities bullpen and threw 2.1 innings, allowing 5 runs (2 inherited runners charged to him) on 3 hits, walked 4, and struck out 4. Lucas Williams pitched 1.2 innings and the lone run he allowed came on a solo homer from Marcus Wilson in the 9th. He allowed 2 other hits and struck out 2.

Quad Cities is back home and they'll kick off a four-game with Peoria at 6:35.

Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Tuesday, April 25, 2017

Salt Lake 9, Fresno 7

W- Luis Diaz (1-0)
L- Edison Frias (1-2)
S- Keynan Middleton (2)

Fresno home runs: D.J. Fisher (4, solo in 2nd)

Like the Grizzlies on Monday, the Tacos fell behind early on Tuesday and couldn't quite erase a (more manageable) deficit; they trailed 5-1 after the 4th.

D.J. Fisher put Fresno on the board with a solo homer in the 2nd inning. The Tacos scored twice in the 5th thanks to an Andrew Aplin sac fly and a Colin Moran RBI double. Reid Brignac added an RBI single in the 6th and ripped a 2-run triple in the 8th. Aplin brought him home with a single.

Fisher finished 3-5 on the day, while Tony Kemp (R, SB [4]), Preston Tucker (R), Brignac (3B, 3 RBI, R), and Aplin (2 RBI) all finished with two-hit days.

Edison Frias went 5 innings and allowed 5 runs on 4 hits, walked 4, and struck out 3. Reymin Guduan got 2 outs in the 6th but allowed a couple of runs on 3 hits. Dayan Diaz and Jordan Jankowski both pitched 1.2 innings; Diaz allowed 2 runs (1 inherited runner charged to him) on 3 hits, and Jankowski allowed a sac fly that allowed one of the two runners that he inherited from Diaz to score.

Brian Holmes will start the first of a 4-game series in Reno on Thursday. First pitch is at 6:35 Pacific.

Corpus Christi 4, Midland 3 in 12 innings

W- Andrew Thome (1-0, 1-1 season)
L- Cody Stull (0-1)

CC home runs: Bryan Muñiz (1, solo in 7th), Ramon Laureano (2, walk-off solo in 12th)

The Hooks made up for that debacle on Monday by walking off with the victory on Tuesday.

Dean Deetz started off the evening by allowing 2 hits, walking 1, and striking out 3 over 5 shutout innings. Kent Emanuel tagged in and went 2.2 innings, allowing 3 runs (all in the 6th) on 6 hits (2-run homer), walking 2, and fanning 4. Riley Ferrell walked 3 and struck out 3 over 3 scoreless, and Andrew Thome retired all four RockHounds he faced to get the win; he got a flyball out to end the 11th and three groundouts in the 12th.

Ramon Laureano scored the first run of the evening when Jon Singleton swatted a ground-rule double in the 1st inning. Singleton also hit an RBI single in the 3rd inning. Corpus held a 2-0 lead until the 6th inning when the Hounds took the lead with 3 runs. They wouldn't be down for long, however, as Bryan Muñiz clubbed a solo shot in the 7th to tie the game. The 3-3 deadlock remained until the 12th when Laureano scored the last run of the evening, driving himself in with a home run.

Singleton (2B, 2 RBI, SB) and Jack Mayfield (2B) both finished with 2 hits on the evening. Drew Ferguson went 4-6 with a double and a stolen base (5); he led off the 3rd with that double and scored on Singleton's single.

Rogelio Armenteros takes on Heath Fillmeyer in game 3 of this series. First pitch is at 7:05.

Buies Creek and Winston-Salem was postponed

Due to rain. A doubleheader is scheduled for today with game 1 starting at 11 AM Eastern. Justin Ferrell will take on Max Beatty in game 1, while Alex Winkelman goes up against Kelvis Valerio in game 2.

The north-central part of North Carolina, where Winston-Salem is located, has been dealing with heavy rains over the last few days.

Peoria 9, Quad Cities 5

W- Jordan Hicks (3-0)
L- Dustin Hunt (0-3)

QC home runs: Ronnie Dawson (3, 2-run in 4th)

The Chiefs scored 4 runs in the top of the 2nd, which forced the Banditos to play catch-up all day.

Dustin Hunt couldn't get out of the 2nd inning; he allowed 4 runs (1 inherited runner charged to him) on 3 hits, walked 3, and struck out 1. Edgardo Sandoval came in and threw 3.2 innings; the two runs he allowed came on a homer hit by Ryan McCarvel in the 5th. One of the runs was unearned. and he struck out 2. Reggie Williams was the next man up; in 3 innings, he allowed 2 runs on 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1. Lucas Williams allowed a run on 2 hits in the 9th.

Ronnie Dawson put Quad Cities on the board with an RBI single in the 2nd inning and clubbed a 2-run homer in the 4th. The Banditos scored a pair in the 7th on a groundout from Chuckie Robinson and a Marcos Almonte single. Dawson finished 2-4 and extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Almonte also had 2 hits on the day; he's recorded a hit in 6 of the 7 games he's played since joining the River Bandits.

Quad Cities and Peoria will finish the series at 6:35 as Carson LaRue takes on Ronnie Williams.

Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Thursday, April 13, 2017

Fresno 12, Las Vegas 4

W- Brady Rodgers (2-0)
L- Donovan Hand (0-2)

Fresno home runs: A.J. Reed (2, solo in 1st), Reid Brignac (2, 3-run in 7th)

After getting smashed in the opener, the Grizzlies have responded by taking the next two games of the series. On Wednesday, they stormed out to a 7-0 lead after the 2nd inning; everyone in the Grizzlies lineup finished the game with a hit and a run scored.

Tony Kemp wasted little time in getting the fireworks started by leading off the game with a triple and scoring the first run of the evening on D.J. Fisher's sacrifice fly. Two batters later, A.J. Reed clubbed his second homer of the year.

Tyler White and Reid Brignac both singled to lead off the 2nd and they both scored on Max Stassi's double. Andrew Aplin drew a walk to join Stassi on the bases, and Kemp moved them over with a sac bunt. Fisher went down on strikes for the second out, but Teoscar Hernandez kept the line moving with an RBI single. An error on the play allowed Aplin to score also allowed Teoscar to advance to 3rd. Reed walked, and Preston Tucker hit an RBI single to bring in Teoscar, who smacked a 2-run triple in the 6th. Reid Brignac drove in Fresno's last three runs of the evening with a 3-run homer in the 7th.

Brady Rodgers went 6 innings and allowed a run on 7 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3. In his AAA debut, Kevin Comer struck out 2 over 2 perfect innings. Reymin Guduan pitched the 9th and allowed 3 runs on 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1.

Edison Frias will start the series finale. He'll face Sean Gilmartin at 7:05 Pacific.

Arkansas 9, Corpus Christi 0

W- Max Povse (2-0)
L- Trent Thornton (1-1)

CC home runs: None.

The Hooks have faced Max Povse twice in the early going and they've failed to score a run in 12.2 innings against him.

Corpus was held to just 4 hits in their home opener. Jack Mayfield's double was their only extra-base hit of the evening.

Trent Thornton allowed 6 runs (4 earned, 1 inherited runner charged to him) on 10 hits and struck out 2 in 3+ innings. Sean Stutzman was the first man out of the Hooks bullpen and he inherited two runners from Thornton. One of them scored on a single, which was the only hit that Stutzman allowed in his 2 innings of work. He also struck out 5 in those two innings. Kyle Smith pitched the final 4 innings and allowed 3 runs on 7 hits and walked 1.

Kent Emanuel will get the start in game 2 of this series. He'll face Tyler Herb at 7:05.

Winston-Salem 7, Buies Creek 1

W- Brannon Easterling (1-1)
L- Justin Ferrell (1-1)
S- Drew Hasler (1)

BC home runs: None.

Well... the first road game in franchise history didn't go well.

Ryne Birk went 2-4, and his RBI single was the Astros' only scoring play. On that same play, the game ended; Myles Straw was thrown out at 3rd base for the final out. Jason Martin, who also finished 2-4, scored Buies' only run.

Justin Ferrell went 4.2 innings and allowed 7 runs (6 earned) on 9 hits (2-run homer) and struck out 4. Alex Winkelman allowed 2 hits and struck out 2 in 3.1 scoreless innings.

Matt Bower will get the start in game 2 of this series. He'll face Max Beatty at 7:00 Eastern.

Kane County 5, Quad Cities 1

W- Sam McWilliams (2-0)
L- Dustin Hunt (0-2)
S- Tommy Eveld (2)

QC home runs: None.

The Banditos were stymied by Cougars starter Sam McWilliams, who held them to just one hit over 5 innings.

Things didn't get much better after Kane County turned to their bullpen, but Quad Cities gave itself a lifeline by loading the bases with nobody out in the 8th. Unfortunately, they could only muster up one run on Daz Cameron's sac fly.

Dustin Hunt pitched 4 innings and allowed 4 runs on 5 hits (solo and 2-run homers), walked 1, and struck out 5. Carson LaRue came on and pitched the final 5 innings. The one run he allowed came on a solo homer from Kyle Smith in the 9th. LaRue allowed one other hit, walked 1, and struck out 6.

Brett Adcock will face Cody Reed in game 2 of this series. First pitch is at 6:35.

Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Wednesday, April 12, 2017

The A teams got an early start on Wednesday in order to finish up their current series.

Fresno 7, Las Vegas 4

W- Keegan Yuhl (1-1)
L- Ricky Knapp (0-1)
S- James Hoyt (1)

Fresno home runs: Preston Tucker (1, 2-run in 2nd), Reid Brignac (1, solo in 8th)

Fresno got the jump on Vegas with 5 runs in the 2nd, and one night after allowing 21 runs and having more position players than pitchers take the mound, they kept the 51s' offense in check.

A.J. Reed singled to lead off the 2nd inning. Two batters later, Preston Tucker smacked his first home run of the season to put the Grizzlies on the board first.
